[Q] How to update baseband/radio/modem - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi everyone,
My verizon galaxy s3 right now has a baseband of I535VRLHE.
First I was wondering which baseband is most recent, I have heard of MB1, MF1, etc. I know where to get these software updates but I have not found out how to actually update the baseband. Right now, I am jumping between many roms but as of this moment I am on an unofficial cm 10.1 build. They suggest getting on MF1 modem, but I really have no idea how do it.
Thanks for the help,
PS: I looked for quite a while so please don't tell me to keep looking or something like that.

Flash in recovery, baseband updates are always in alphabetical order, most recent is mf1.

Do I need to wipe anything for flashing it? Also, its ok to flash baseband updates with a custom rom installed?
And these will make my radios stronger, and thus my signal stronger?\
Thanks

no
yes
theres really no answer to pt3

What modem do you guys suggest flashing to. Right now I am on I535VRLHE and by my understanding that is extremely outdated. So just to make sure again no wiping anything, no formatting, no anything? And I should be flashing an update in either twrp or cwm? I know these questions sound stupid when I said I flash roms daily, but I really do not want to risk bricking my beloved s3 hahaha.
Thanks for taking your time to help me.

from what i understand the modem that works best for you will depend mostly on location. they might get better as they update, but i get teh same signal on the latest as I did on a modem from a few updates ago.
you can download the all in one packages here
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/34053-firmware-vrbmf1-modemrpmtzsbl-verizon-sgs3-sch-i535/
reboot into recovery, then flash, reboot back to the ROM. if youre worried, make a backup. things can always go wrong i guess.

Ok thank you again, another question haha sorry. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788313&page=6 In this thread, the first few pages say to flash via odin and what not none of them confirm being able to flash through recovery. Have you ever flashed a radio through recovery?
Also what advantages does an AIO have compared to just the modem.

[Q] Do I need 4.1.2 firmware for these Custom ROMs

Hey XDA, I am not entirely new to this but not close to knowledgeable. Anyways, my simple question is, do I need to have 4.1.2 installed in order to flash the newest ROMs. I have 4.1.1 rooted but am afraid to flash any of these ROMs as they all say they are designed for 4.1.2. I avoided posting a thread but it seems I cannot find the answer ANYWHERE.
Well.. thanks in advanced!
The 4.1.2 ROMs are built from the update, so they'll already have whatever is in it. You don't have to flash it separately. However, you may want to flash the 4.1.2 modem and rpm (may not be in the rom), which can be found in post 2 of the CleanROM 6 thread in Android Development.

Sorry for my newbie self but are you suggesting I go ahead and flash whatever ROM I want ? I really just don't want to increase the risk of bricking my device. Again, my device is 4.1.1 and do not plan to update the firmware to 4.1.2. To be more specific, I am looking to flash SynergyROM VZW S3. All I need is the green light. Thanks again!

You will be fine flashing SynergyRom. You can downgrade, upgrade, stay in the same version. You won't brick you phone.

Sounds good! :good: I am finally going to go ahead and do what I've been hesitating to do for about a week now lol
There's always a chance for a brick. I have never bricked one of the three phones I have rooted. Just make sure you are flashing a rom made for the Verizon gs3, your bootloader is unlocked and you have backed up your imei. Those three things will greatly reduce your chances of a hard brick.

Make sure you wipe your phone before flashing rims and such. It is NOT okay to just flash without wiping, and always backup your apps first with titanium backup. Just thought I'd let you know since you wanted to flash away for your first time.

[Q] If I have VRBMB1 can I flash a rom that is VRBMF1?

Sorry, I'm a total noob. I don't really understand how the "Baseband Version" factors into the ROM/phone operation. Can someone explain it? I have a pretty good understanding of computers but when it comes to the phone it seems very black-boxy -- I'm still learning. My underlying question is:
The BoneStock ROM says: "BoneStock v3.0 (VRBMF1) 6/23/13", my phone currently has VRBMB1. Can I flash the BoneStock ROM on my phone or do I need to upgrade the Baseband Version somehow before I do that? I saw links to different revisions on the BoneStock thread but there isn't a whole lot of explanation about how to use them.
Thanks,
-Greg

Cool, do you know what the Baseband firmware does? Should I flash my firmware to VRBMF1?
I flashed mine mf1 because it really did help signal and data speeds. In my opinion it is worth it to flash the mf1

Did you flash it before flashing BoneStock or does it matter what the order is?
Modem has no relation to what ROM you are on. You can flash whichever you want first, doesn't matter.

[Q] Correct way to do this

Hi all, been reading the threads and have 'info overload' :silly: from so many different options. Just looking to get stock OS with root, and the latest update (mf1 I believe) so I can have stable 4g and the latest OS updates. Locked or unlocked BL does not matter. I do have Triangle away just in case it is needed.
In the past I went straight to mf1 and then did the 1 click Casual root. All was good except I had no 4g, even when everyone around me did. So I'm thinking of going to COMBINATION_I535VRALG1_I535VZWALG1_743127_REV09_user_low_ship.tar.zip and starting over.
Should I do ota's to get to mf1, or root first, install a root keeper app, and then upgrade.
Thank you all in advance for any advice you can provide. I tried searching on my own first but there is so much info out there.

You can just update then root as it requires less steps.
Root first. Then from the development section download the new ROM and modem which is separate and flash away. That's what I've been running with the KT747 kernel but others like the LK 3 kernel, so it's up to you whichever you prefer

Honestly not familiar with the kernels. Like I said Just want stock os with root and an actually working LTE this time.
jmxc23, I do like your solution but last time I lost 4g lte doing that. Maybe another try will do it

No problem.
I used the method in this thread to gain root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984436
It flashes a rooted stock rom (MB1) via Odin. Then used Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and took the OTA to MF1. Then restore root. 100% stock Rom + Root. I've had zero issues so far. Don't have to mess with flashing kernel, modem, and it doesn't trip the flash counter.

[Q] 4.2.2 to 4.4.2 flashing instructions?

Hi all.I am a bit confused as I am reading some things that say your modem has to be updated to make this jump but the ROM threads themselves have the same old instructions with no mention of this.
Coming from Carbon 1.8/4.2.2.
Anything special that I need to do to jump into Kit Kat other than the normal procedures?(Backup,Wipe,Format,Flash?)
Thanks.

Ok funny I hadn't seen the Cyanogen Mod instructions since I haven't flashed that but clearly stating that VRBMF1 firmware needs to be flashed. Is that the case for any AOSP 4.4.2?If yes what is the correct sequence?

You should be OK with that flashing procedure, you're probably on the mf1 firmware already. You can check by looking at your baseband in settings
If you aren't, get it from here, you want the mf1 aio:

Sequence of flashing this doesn't matter.

We need quite a bit more info before we can help you out. What version of Android were you running before you tried to flash back to stock, 4.1.2, 4.3, or 4.4.2? Were you stock or running a custom ROM? What version of stock were you trying to flash, 4.1.2 or 4.3? From where did you get the stock file you tried to flash?

Looking in the development section, I see Hyperdrive is still on 4.1.2, so if you were running Hyperdrive you were on 4.1.2. The problem may have come from flashing the 4.3 stock image on a rooted, bootlaoder unlocked phone. Were you no longer wanting to have an unlocked bootloader and run custom ROMs, because flashing the 4.3 stock image would have locked you down like that. Are you sure you flashed a stock 4.3 file? If so you would probably have to proceed as if you were already on stock 4.3 just to play it safe. This may be you best chance at regaining a functioning phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2581166
Unfortunately since you phone does no boot, there is no way to confirm if it is currently on 4.1.2 or 4.3. That would give us a definitive answer on which fix method to use.

If you were on safestrap, shouldn't you have had a fully stock ROM in the stock slot? Also from everything I read, you couldn't run Hyperdrive on safestap because you can only run 4.3 TW ROMs on safestrap. If you were running safestrap, that would mean you were on the 4.3 OTA of VRUCML1 and fixes for that would be your best bet, but since the phone won't power on I don't think any of the fixes here would work. Best bet may be to send it out for JTAG repair. I've seen mobile tech videos mentioned a lot for JTAG repairs.

Oh man, that sucks. Do you think you possibly used an s4 file on your s3? If so, you will definitely have to send it out for JTAG repair if you can't get any response out of it. But it can't hurt to check out that thread I linked earlier and see if the SD card method can work for you. Good luck.
