Optimizing apps... faster in 4.4.2+? finally multithreaded? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I noticed since flashing to 4.4.2 the optimizing apps dialog has been a lot faster than before. What's up? Why?

If you mean 4.4.3 it's because it only optimises those that need it,, unlike previously when it did all

[Q] N5 won't change to ART...

So it's been a little bit of time, and I'm curious to try out the new runtime. Problem is, every time I try to make the switch, all it does is reboot. I don't get the 5-10 build time, and I'm still running dalvik. Stock ROM, Franco r16 test kernel, rooted, unlocked boot loader, etc. Any ideas what could be preventing me from making the change? Or a method to find out for myself?
TIA

Are you sure the kernel that you are running supports ART?

I don't think that's it, as I flashed back to stock to see if that was the case, and still no luck...

I do not. I've reverted back to an old nandroid, and that worked. Topic can be closed/deleted.

Thank you! Removing Xposed framework allowed me to convert.

Go back to 4.2 or MF1?

So 4.3 drains the crap out of my battery. I only get 3G in areas I use to get 4GLTE. It won't stay connected to wifi. My wifi home is comcast blast! and it's always disconnecting from it and says it's unstable.
My phone seems to be a slower too.
Of course I know the reason for these hassles is because the update, since my phone didn't do this before.
Rollback or downgrade to the last version possible?

Not possible.
You can root though, and disable system apps that could be causing you problems.
I'd download wakelock detector or better battery stats and look for wakelocks. Sometimes disable a few rogue apps could solve some problems.

This one is.
Safestrap is available to run custom touchwiz roms. There's some pretty good ones right now with more on the way.

Use the safestrap and install one of the modified versions of the 4.3 . I am having great battery life and good signal with old&slows version.
So safestrap is a custom rom? The last time I used a custom rom, my gs3 factory reset itself at random times at least once every few days.
I don't want to deal with that lol

That's usually from bad installation procedures and not wiping correctly.
Safestrap is a modified twrp recovery that allows you to load custom roms. You can load any 4.3 touchwiz rom in the development section with it. You shouldn't have those rebooting issues you did before, and it sounds like pretty much everything will run better for you then the stock rom you have now.

No, Safestrap makes slots for different roms. Your original rom remains untouched.
You're going to have to read up on it and understand what you're doing. Put a fair amount of research into it, it's not terribly difficult but it is a different process.

Swiftkey Issue

Anyone else having issues with swiftkey staying at default? I know there was an issue when you reboot the phone, the keyboard would reset but, it happens when the screen is off or the phone goes into deep sleep.
Was wondering if anyone knows of a fix??

Sorry cannot reproduce. Been using swift key every since i got the phone and not had any problems keeping it as a default, even after rebooting.
That happened to me on KK as well as JB. I simply disable the stock keyboard in Settings.

That's weird... You think GravityBox could be causing it? That's the only "modifications" I've made.
I've tried the official release and the new beta release and still have the same problems.

Can't Update nexus 5 past 4.4.3

I Need help updating my nexus 5 to 4.4.4. I touched the notification notifing me of the update and it switched to the twrp recovery screen and failed. I then switched back to stock recovery. Now it keeps saying my system is up to date. Any suggestions?
it failed because you are not running 100% stock rom/kernel.

fastboot.
There has to be a better way besides me doing a fastboot or restore to factory. There is an app or script I remember having to cleardata/clear cache . I have too much important data that I can't seem to back up.

I wanted to reset the app that controlled updates. I had a similar problem with me rooted galaxy s4 and HTC One and it was as simple as an app reset.

Oh right. So to be clear you don't want to be updated / rooted / recovery ?
Because our assumption was that you did want those things and that's the advice we've been giving
App reset? No idea, they changed how it works.
If you use search, there are other threads discussing that. Probably get this one locked
Edit. Oh so you mean the reset that forces OTA updates to be checked again? That was always considered a bad idea and it still won't help your issue of your ROM is modified.
If you want root, what I said is the best way bar none. If you want stock unrooted, fastboot flash system.img to clean up your ROM.

Well thanks for helping me to help you. It's been a dream it really has.
Everyone else don't do what the OP has done. It has been linked to some pretty bad software issues... This was just a case of "OP knows best" unfortunately.

BBM crashing once a day

I'm wondering if anyone can take a look at the logcat and see what could be the problem with bbm. Been crashing once a day I'm the the latest version of Optipop with PA gaaps (nano), code blue kernel, and data and cache is f2fs. pastebin.com/TRVqj72w please and thanks
If you know what the first B stands for then you already know why you have problems

I haven't tried it on stock, but I'm under the impression Optipop is close enough to stock with a few extras included.

Would I be able to run stock on secondary? And I have data and cache partions in f2fs, does that matter for Multirom?? And can i run stock with f2fs partions as mentioned?? Thanks
BBM sucks it drains battery like crazy, remains active all the time for no reason, and that notification is plain annoying, but, maybe check by greenify

IDK, it was just a suggestion to quickly see. If you have F2FS it may not happen.
I used BBM everyday on my N5 since it was released and never had a single issue, it never crashed or froze on me. I am using it now on my Moto X and it is working the same way, only problem I have now is that Moto display will not show a BBM notification on my lock screen like it does for everything else.

It seems fine by me. Doesn't notice the battery drain that much But then I would have to try without it to see how much it will improve.
It could be the memory leak issue affecting random apps. I haven't found anything yet to confirm this, but I have been restarting my phone about once and day and will keep trying to see if that helps. Otherwise, thanks for the suggestions and help
