[Q] Installing Custom ROMs on KNOX-powered Galaxy S3 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi guys,
I'm new here as a user, but I used xda frequently. I haven't found any info as an answer to my question, so let me ask you:
Is there any way to install a 4.4.2 ROM on Galaxy S3 with KNOX? There are some specifications I want to add to this question:
1. I deleted all KNOX apps using Titanium Backup, so I think on the software side I'm clean.
2. It doesn't matter for me, whether this thing will trip my counter or not, the only thing I need is to install a different ROM.
3. ODIN got stuck in the middle when I tried to install a different ROM so I had to get back. (which on the other side means that I tripped my KNOX counter, I suppose)
4. I used Safestrap w/ a different partition on it, where I installed CM11, but it only showed me black screen.
5. I rooted my phone using saferoot application.
I would be very grateful if you could help me. The problem is that other threads that I saw only deal with avoiding KNOX tripping. In my case, I don't really care about the warranty. I only demand freedom in installing any ROM I want.
Thanks in advance.

Once you are on 4.3 you can only run safestrap and flash 4.3 based touchwiz ROMs only. This thread will give you the info you need:

Could you also provide a link to the list of TouchWiz Verizon Galaxy S3 ROMs on 4.3?

Everything you needed was in the link I provided. In the OP (Original Post, or first post) of the thread I linked, the fifth link provided is titled "TW 4.3 Download list." Click on that link and you will see a list of 4.3 Touchwiz ROMs that are safestrap compatible. Here is the link to that thread:

I am shorta behind of all roms lol. I had to look for rom comes with 4.1.2 i wouldn't download the 4.2.2. I really wanted liquidsmooth. That looks good on youtube.
Any ROM should work be it 4.1.1, 4.1.2 or 4.2.2. All that is number is the android version. You're baseband stays the same. Clean ROM is great, liquid smooth is also good. Hell, try em all, that's the best part. Of course, this coming from a certified flash-a-holic!

I tried the root method you suggested twice and it rooted fine but the problem was installing a ROM for example i tried installing Liquid Smooth 4.2.2 Stable not sure whether MR1 or whatever but i did it the first time on 4.2.1 stock for vzw s3 and i rooted it then installed the Rom and Yellow Triangle so i had to odin it back i thought it might of been the update (4.2.1) so i then updated up too 4.1.1 then began the same process Rooted Then installed rom same problem Yellow Triangle

Do you mean the yellow triangle in the Odin boot screen? If you installed the ROM properly (through recovery like clockworkmod or TWRP) then it shouldn't boot to that screen at all..

Your bootloader is still locked. Odin back to stock, re-root, and unlock with version 1.2. The version in the Play Store will not work. If you search for that version, there are links everywhere. After you complete this, back up everything including IMEI and flash whatever you want.
Thanks I installed liquid smooth ROM with unlocked boot loader. Everything looks great the way I want it! Navbar looks cool! I know what u mean by 4.2.2, I thought these are for 4.2.2. Confused user here.

@galactic bear: What happened when you try to update it past 4.0.4?? Did it try to update through the custom recovery?
As far as the post goes that I gave you the link for, under Section 1 where there's those 3 bullet points and it says download 1 of the following, make sure you do the 1 that says root and unlock bootloader it's the third bullet.

Think of it being similar to Windows. You have 95, 2000, xp, win7 and win8. All of them are windows just different releases. So if you take your computer with xp and install 7 on it it should be fine. Just like if you install liq. Smooth 4.2.2 on a device running 4.1.1 your essentially upgradeing the Operating system. So now the 4.1.1 phone becomes 4.2.2. That's it in a nutshell.

Hi Shaftamle,
I just got my Samsung Galaxy S3 (bought a used one off e-bay so that I don't lose my unlimited data plan).
I plan to root my phone and was doing some preliminary homework. It looks like you have answered most of other people's questions, so thank you for helping out so much. I think I can root by myself with the information on this thread.
Thank you, I will do as suggested.
I am running into problems in Step 3. I used Clockwork (non-touch) and it says "success (0) / fail (0)". I do have "auto-reboot" unchecked.
Not sure what I am doing wrong. Step 2 went well.

Seriously, how hard is it to follow directions?
All you need is ODIN and a stock rooted Touchwiz.tar. Once you have that you're golden. Install v1.2 to your phone from here to unlock your bootloader and then install this to flash your recovery. This whole process can be completed in about 10-15 minutes tops.

[Q] Switching to Cyanogenmod on 4.3 Verizon Galaxy S3

Hey guys, new to the whole Android modding stuff so, go easy because my knowledge about all the technical stuff is pretty limited.
So, anyway, I got tired of Touchwiz and I want to switch to Cyanogenmod just because I like the stock Android look and dislike the general slowness of Touchwiz. Problem is, I took the stupid OTA 4.3 update which apparently added the Knox bootloader which is, as far as I have read, impossible to unlock at this point.
I was under the impression that, with the Knox bootloader, its impossible to have a custom ROM since it will brick your device, but these threads :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2575977
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2541343
Seem to indicate that all the Knox bootloader does is prevent downgrading the bootloader and also voids the warranty if you tamper with your device. Well, my warranty expire a couple months ago so I couldn't care less. But now I'm really confused. Can I, or can I not flash Cyanogenmod on my 4.3 Verizon Galaxy S3 assuming I don't care about the warranty?
You will brick your fone flashing any type of custom recovery or roms will brick you fone. U can root ur fone from my understanding from other threads but thats it

Like what was said above, you can't install any custom roms.
Knox is not responsible for locking the bootloader, it's only a flag that is triggered when root is achieved. Think of it like a flash counter that can't be undone. It has nothing to do with this.
The problem is the bootloader that was also updated. Every step in the chain has to be on the VRUCML1 base or the phone will brick itself and terminate the boot. Since our previous unlock method was to modify a step in the bootloader to unlock it, it can't be done the same way on the new base because it isn't able to be modified.
Any attempt to unlock it by any means or flashing a custom rom will change the bootloader. Safestrap is the only hope for the new base, or unless we're lucky enough to get a leaked unlocked bootloader.

Like the original poster, I am stuck on a touchWiz android 4.3 verizon gs3. I have been able to root it with safe root, but I have not had any luck rolling back to 4.1.2 or to unlock the bootloader. I have seen various "how to" type things that are supposed to work on 4.3, but like I said, no luck so far.
If someone more knowledgeable than myself has heard of a breakthrough in this area that would be awesome.

I was running cm11 m3 on my vzw galaxy s3 but used odin to install VRUCML1 not knowing about Knox and all the fun that comes with that. Before I installed VRUCML1, I did a backup. I've since regained root access through saferoot but cant boot into a custom recovery without getting the "you've been naughty. go visit a verizon store" error message. Does anyone know of a way that I can restore my pre-VRUCML1 backup or am I out of luck since my bootloader is still locked?

I looked up your specific tutorial, it definitely will not work.
That only works on the international model. As a general rule, never trust a guide unless it says it's specifically for the Verizon galaxy s3. It's locked down much tighter than any other s3 models, and many alterations that can be performed on the other variants will often brick this model.

You can still root, install a ROM with Safe Root or Safestrap or whatever, and have a better-running phone. You simply can't install a different kernel... it sounds like you can even still have a custom Recovery (modified TWRP is my understanding).

Want some advice? Sell the S3 for a pre-4.3 S3 or sell the S3 for another device. Theres no guarantee that AOSP will ever work with Safestrap.

Well I have been considering dropping a bit of money getting a used international S3 because the Cyanogenmod installer would work with it, but I don't think my Verizon SIM card would work in it.

It wouldn't, you need a CDMA device, the international s3 doesn't have CDMA bands. Verizon leaves you pretty limited in device selection.

That's what I thought, so that pretty much just leaves me with Verizon versions of the phone... I'll make sure not to stick with verizon when my current contract expires.

Verizon Galaxy S3 I535 Recovery / Bootstrap - ?

Hey guys ...
So I just acquired the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 i535. I have rooted it and after tons of research and digging, understand that it has the Bootloader from Hell, and as for any customization, rooting it is as far as i get to go. Now, can someone point me in the direction of a working "work-around" so that I can unlock these Bootloaders and install/flash ROMS and RECOVERIES.
Thanks

Yeah I know ... I'm running 4.4.2 / NE1 - rooted and Safestrap - was hoping that there was something I might have missed about the Bootloaders and there being a way to unlock in order to install Custom Roms - I guess that was just wishful thinking.

There are 2 or 3 roms you can run via safestrap but sadly they aren't custom roms. All TW based. Yea I've seen several people here in the forums who have taken the 4.4.2 update only to find out custom roms are out of the question

Same here I'm on 4.4.2 and I really hate the stock look. However, I found that the pcb blue theme works very well with both 4.4.2 roms that are available.
Also, by browsing around the different variants sub forums I've found lots of mods that work with safestrap on d2vzw as well. And lastly I've found through trial and error that I can have a different look by downloading themes for the Sprint s3 and after extracting the zip copy and paste the system apks such as clock, system ui, keyguard, etc. Pretty much everything except for the framework files (haven't been able to do anything with those)
However, it can be risky so if you don't know what you're doing you shouldn't try this method. And as always backup everything before any attempts to modify system files.
I nor anyone else is responsible for what you do to your phone.

Flashfire for s6

Is someone willing to make a thread about what flashable zips of mods or roms people have flashed via flashfire without tripping knox counter?
I'm surprised that there's so little interest in this topic. Seems kinda like the holy grail atm to flash custom ROMs without triggering KNOX. I saw someone in the Flashfire thread mentioning that they'd actually flashed a ROM after removing the lines that flashed a custom kernel, and it worked out well. KNOX still intact.
Then again, someone else said they'd also flashed kernels using Flashfire without triggering. I'd be more wary of that, though.
There's a flashfire thread already.

Specific for s6? Where? I am also surprised there isn't more interest in making our phones free of knox restrictions

There isn't a flashfire thread for every device. There's a general one.

I know that but I think we need people who own an s6 and are brave enough to flash with flashfire to post their results regarding flashing successfully and without tripping knox as well..
On Verizon s6 Scrosler has built two roms that can be flashed with flashfire. I sent him a message, everyone who wants to bring his roms in our phones would be nice to show his interest too.
