wants to root my verizon samsung galaxy s3 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi,
I have verizon s3 with 4.1.2. I would like to know which guide are correct for me to use guide for me to root. I have noticed most of guides are from last year. Not too sure which link is correct for me. I spend hours and hours reading how to root. My s3 is currently non root phone for now. Hopefully someone will help me.
Many thanks!

There is a guide on the android dev section called "Root for Jelly Bean 4.1.1 and 4.1.2 OTA".

No problem, glad I could help. Check this link out for an All in One ROM page. There are some that are listed in Android development and original Android development that aren't on this post but it's a good starting point.

I am shorta behind of all roms lol. I had to look for rom comes with 4.1.2 i wouldn't download the 4.2.2. I really wanted liquidsmooth. That looks good on youtube.

Any ROM should work be it 4.1.1, 4.1.2 or 4.2.2. All that is number is the android version. You're baseband stays the same. Clean ROM is great, liquid smooth is also good. Hell, try em all, that's the best part. Of course, this coming from a certified flash-a-holic!

I tried the root method you suggested twice and it rooted fine but the problem was installing a ROM for example i tried installing Liquid Smooth 4.2.2 Stable not sure whether MR1 or whatever but i did it the first time on 4.2.1 stock for vzw s3 and i rooted it then installed the Rom and Yellow Triangle so i had to odin it back i thought it might of been the update (4.2.1) so i then updated up too 4.1.1 then began the same process Rooted Then installed rom same problem Yellow Triangle

Do you mean the yellow triangle in the Odin boot screen? If you installed the ROM properly (through recovery like clockworkmod or TWRP) then it shouldn't boot to that screen at all..

Your bootloader is still locked. Odin back to stock, re-root, and unlock with version 1.2. The version in the Play Store will not work. If you search for that version, there are links everywhere. After you complete this, back up everything including IMEI and flash whatever you want.

Thanks I installed liquid smooth ROM with unlocked boot loader. Everything looks great the way I want it! Navbar looks cool! I know what u mean by 4.2.2, I thought these are for 4.2.2. Confused user here.
Thanks again

Thanks but ever since i odin my phone back it doesnt let me update now im stuck in 4.0.4

@galactic bear: What happened when you try to update it past 4.0.4?? Did it try to update through the custom recovery?
As far as the post goes that I gave you the link for, under Section 1 where there's those 3 bullet points and it says download 1 of the following, make sure you do the 1 that says root and unlock bootloader it's the third bullet.

Think of it being similar to Windows. You have 95, 2000, xp, win7 and win8. All of them are windows just different releases. So if you take your computer with xp and install 7 on it it should be fine. Just like if you install liq. Smooth 4.2.2 on a device running 4.1.1 your essentially upgradeing the Operating system. So now the 4.1.1 phone becomes 4.2.2. That's it in a nutshell.

Assuming you're rooted, either flash the stock root mb1 or restore you're nandroid backup. You did make a back up, RIGHT? THIS is why we back stuff up.

Hi Shaftamle,
I just got my Samsung Galaxy S3 (bought a used one off e-bay so that I don't lose my unlimited data plan).
I plan to root my phone and was doing some preliminary homework. It looks like you have answered most of other people's questions, so thank you for helping out so much. I think I can root by myself with the information on this thread.

Thank you, I will do as suggested.
I am running into problems in Step 3. I used Clockwork (non-touch) and it says "success (0) / fail (0)". I do have "auto-reboot" unchecked.
Not sure what I am doing wrong. Step 2 went well.

Seriously, how hard is it to follow directions?
All you need is ODIN and a stock rooted Touchwiz.tar. Once you have that you're golden. Install v1.2 to your phone from here to unlock your bootloader and then install this to flash your recovery. This whole process can be completed in about 10-15 minutes tops.

S3 Jelly Bean Update failed

I had my phone rooted, but still running the stock ROM. I tried to do the Jelly Bean update and it failed citing a CWM directory. I went and did a complete reset since I was really looking forward to getting it on the s3, but now whenever I do a check for software updates, it says nothing is found. Is there any way I can manually kick off the OTA upgrade?

I must have gotten over zealous... my GF got a JB update on her Nexus the same day.
There is a leak based Jellybean ROM in the Dev forum but there is no official release or update yet.
The only way you are getting a Verizon built JB Rom on your S3 anytime soon is if one leaks out. You will need to have a rooted device to install of course.
Otherwise, it could be months before we see an official release. Being that a Sprint JB Rom has leaked I would have to think a Verizon one is not to far off. Just because Verizon takes for ever to release the update does not mean that Samsung is not currently working on it.

Since I did the NANDROID backup extsdcard before I removed the VZ bloat ware, can I just restore it? If so, where is it on my external sd card? I followed the instruction in the root guide, and don't remember specifying a folder for the backup... is it in clockworkmod\backup?

Yes if you backed up just restore it. You will need to restore through CWM though . If all you did was freeze bloat then under the backup/restore section choose advanced restore and just restore the system.

Customer base and update cycles are two completely different things. And judging by my coworker who has a gs3 and doesn't even know what a premuim suite update is and doesn't care, I think Verizon will be fine sending out updates whenever they want.

well, that didn't quite work
so I downloaded the file CF-Auto-Root-m3-m3zh-gti9305 (hopefully that was the right one for 4.1.2 rooted). I booted into recovery mode, started odin. Chose PDF and selected the file, hit Start. After about 15 seconds I get a "Fail" message. Phone won't boot at all. Did I select the wrong image? How do I get my phone back?

Thinking that this was the wrong file, I went to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439

There are many that work. Just go to Verizon s3 android development and take your pick. You could stay stock or look at others with new features. Synergy and galaxymod both have multi window working. Beans 8 Is touch wiz based but has aosp features and looks. Clean rom is very stable and is basically stock with some performance enhancements.

You have a Verizon phone so you absolutely have to flash a Verizon compatible rom. I mean the link you gave us from technodify practically is telling you i9300 which is the international galaxy s3 not i535(Verizon). You are lucky that it failed because if it went through then your phone will be bricked. It was very careless of you to do that now if you have a backup of your previous rom then restore it.

Well after it failed I would factory reset then reboot but the last time I tried it I didn't want to wait for all of the start up so I didn't factory reset it from the clockworkmod restore and just rebooted the phone. Now it will not respond to the power or charge from plugging it in the wall, think it's bricked now. Looking for a hardware provisioning program on the net so I can manually go into the motherboard and re-configure the factory reset thru a walk around.

Who's still unrooted & on 4.1.2??

Just curious to know if there are any vzw S3 owners that are still unrooted AND on 4.1.2? I am. I assume there aren't many of us left. My reason for still being on 4.1.2, I keep deferring the ota but I become too lazy to invest into rooting but still keeping my hopes that one day I will have the will power to do so!

This phone is so old I don't remember all the steps to get here anymore. I'm sure the threads that I followed are still here buried so deep cause they're so old and ancient. Sorry, can't help you find them.
I'm super happy with it and with my unlimited data and a fully working TiBU Pro and tethering, I have no reason to update. Until I'm ready for the next greatest phablet sometime after next month.

Wow man, I kept my backup for 4.1.2 but never looked back on rooting and unlocking, which you still have the option to do. I would not take any OTAs as the BootLoader will be locked permanently and word is verizon has been finding ways to block root

People running 4.1.2 should do the following if they want to run deodexed 4.3 stock (locked bootloader stripped out) or 4.4.4 AOSP roms like CM/PA/AOKP/etc.
1. Towelroot to root
2. EZ-Unlock to unlock bootloader with LE6 bootloader
3. Install TWRP recovery through TWRP Manager
4. Flash invisiblek's MF1 firmware
5. Flash the NE1 radio (I don't think a zip of it by itself exists)
6. Flash your rom of choice

People running 4.1.2 should do the following if they want to run deodexed 4.3 stock (locked bootloader stripped out) or 4.4.4 AOSP roms like CM/PA/AOKP/etc.
1. Towelroot to root
2. EZ-Unlock to unlock bootloader with LE6 bootloader
3. Install TWRP recovery through TWRP Manager
4. Flash invisiblek's MF1 firmware

Agree somewhat with that. Casual works just fine for those on 4.1.2 also. I used it when I unlocked and rooted and never looked back, it's also in the previous post before yours

Alternatively you could just look up one click methods in google. You should just be able to click a button and walk away. I remember it even putting on a recovery as well...

Some 1-click methods are quite questionable and dangerous though

Just to answer the original question, you are not alone. I am also unrooted on 4.1.2 for the same reason. Thanks to the others here for posting tips so I'll know where to look when I have time.

Some people just choose not to root but most take the OTA, props to you for not taking the ota though

anyone using Evdo? can you share your configuration ?
Still rockin' Cleanrom 7! No joke..
My wife's been using the GS3 I gave her and I had it flashed to the stablest rom at the time.
It's getting some age on it for sure and acting wonky so I'm trying to figure out what I should do with it.. In the hunt for what to do to keep it a solid worker for the Mrs. Heck, last time I flashed anything it was that rom on this old GS3 to get her going. Yes, I went to the dark-side, so haven't been a flashoholic like my previous android days. So now I gotta learn up so I can fix this thing. Been a while.. huh
A testament though for Scott's kicking Cleanrom for this phone. What a beast to hang on so long and fairly decently on this phone.
What to do?
Considering trying to odin to a stock rom or something to do an OTA, which I know will lock it's b-loader, or some other option for a pretty solid TW updated rom of some kind.
Reading up now in here to find out.

Yup it sure can. As long as it's on 4.1.2 or earlier the bootloader can be unlocked. As far as rooting it can be rooted even up to 4.4.2

Jealous!!!
I wish my phone still was on 4.1.2, after my lovely wife being a little nosy, by mistake took the OTA to 4.3, i've been suffering running TW on my phone. You guys are lucky.

just an occasional lurker, but I'm also still on 4.1.2 for the same reasons.
haven't gotten around to rooting, don't want to deal with many of the hassles that came with the OTA. I defer the OTA every day.
got til June before I hit my next upgrade....will see if I can last that long.

That has to be annoying deferring the update on a daily basis. I didn't waste anytime myself with unlocking and rooting when I got my phone. I knew better than to trust VZW

Good for you. I never looked back when I unlocked my bootloader. I love being able to flash nearly any custom rom there is
