Trouble updating to 4.4.3 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guy, and thanks for a lovely forum.
I'm currently running 4.4.2 on my Nexus 5 rooted and with Exposed Installer and GravityBox[KK] (which has a modify kernel for the Exposed installer). I want to install the new OTA-update (4.4.3) but the installation always get aborted (unexpected counting) or something. Dose The EI and GB[KK] interfere with the update process or by the modify kernel or both?
Do I need to uninstall EI and GB[KK], unroot the Nexus 5? In that case, how? Or do a factory reset or di I need to install totally back to stock 4.4.3?
I'm running a Mac (the only computer i own, and I have on internet connection at home so I use my Nexus 5's 3G and use hotspot to the Mac so it's not possible to install ROM's/update via my Mac cause then I will not have an internet connection during the installation process).
Is it possible to return back to stock on my Mac? In case how?
Dose anyone know how to fix this problem or are able to help me solve this problem? All answers are appreciated. I really need to get the 4.4.3 update. It dose not matter if I need to do a full "wipe"/factory reset, I have everything backup.

I do not fully understand the instructions for the Mac. I'm not so femilier with the terminal commands. Do I need to install adb and fastboot on me Mac also?
Do you think that you can help me understand a little better or go through with the steps?

Google 15 second adb drivers xda. That should set up adb/fastboot that'll you'll need. Then extract the file and just double click on the flash-all.sh

I manage to the part where you use commands for test if the Mac detected my Nexus 5 but I get error massage:
"macbook:android Macbook2$ ./adb devices
List of devices attached

What seems to be the trouble?

[Q] Can I flash a recovery from Terminal Emulator?

For some reason I can't get my PC to recognize my device in fastboot. I remember flashing a recovery from the terminal emulator once but I don't remember how I did it.

If you are running Win 8 or 8.1 it won't, use a Win 7 PC. The command was "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" what did you flash TWRP or CWM?
@philohtc
He isn't talking about fastboot. He's taking about flashing it from terminal emulator directly from the phone.
@nickfury27
I'm not sure if you can but you can use a couple of apps to flash recovery. They're called Recovery Tools, and Flash Image GUI.

Short answer is YES.
However, if you don't know what you are doing, you can render your phone useless. You would have to manually mount the recovery block, dd, and set permissions manually. If you screw it up, you'll have an expensive paper weight.
My advice, take timmaaa's advice.

That worked. Thanks!
No problems.

If for future reference you would like to know the commands for doing this, please send me a pm. I do not want to post it here as newer inexperienced ones could get themselves into serious trouble... Aka... No Usable Phone Land.

It probably is best to post the results here, that way all users can benefit from it. I try not to assist via PM as the solution isn't able to be seen by other members who might have the same question. Just make sure you put a disclaimer on it.

the casing is a Nexus 5 but it detects it as a Nexus 4 i wanted to root and put another firmware in it but my windows is not properly detecting this device can someone please point to a right direction to properly root this device thanks
You also seem to have a test build of key lime pie. This is definitely strange.

Did you buy this from Google or your carrier? What version are you running?

@Neurotica i got it from one of the wireless stores around my area he was selling them for cheap so i took a bite on it but any methods of trying to root it or getting my pc to read it is not working any suggestions?
@MakoVince is there somthing i could do with it as far as rooting it and changing the ROM? im new to Android devices so im not sure what to do with this phone
I'd suggest that you try to update your device while it is still stock. Sideload the updates until you read KitKat.

0. Unlock the bootloader
1. Install CWM or TWRP via fastboot
2. Back up the pre-release software and save it on your computer
3. Install 4.4.2 factory image via fastboot to 'fix' your device
4. Share the backup you made, because it's interesting

Do what rusty said, you dont even know how lucky you are . We missed an oppurtinity to get a an early prerelease system once. I hope we don't lose the chance again.

What kinds of errors are you getting?
This when i open the application
the data folder is missing! many or all functions may not work correctly, and multiple errors may arise.
pretty sure I'm just being a noob

It sounds like either the toolkit files weren't extracted correctly or there was an error while downloading. When you download the toolkit zip, you should extract all the contents, and there should be the toolkit exe file and the Data folder.
Ok thank you. I will try again as soon as I can.
Hi, so I got the toolkit to open properly and along the bottom it recognizes my device but there is no "get devices" under the adb commands. I clicked on the "get token id" but then it just keeps working for really long. Waited about a half hour. If I need to leave it longer that's cool just not sure. Thanks

[Q] some questions

Im new on nexus 5 forum so im sorry if i havent read some of these.
I wanted to know if CF rooting, i can underclock my device so i could save battery? And yeah i havent rooted my n5 yet. I need an easier way :/ those adb drivers driving me nuts with my windows xp(i know i broke my laptop with win7)
So yeah can i? I also wanted to try the display control(color changing) so does cf rooting do it?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Hi,
You should read what CF-Root does: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/orig-development/nexus-5-cf-auto-root-t2507211.
It only unlocks your Bootloader and root your device, it's not something to control the kernel (CPU) settings.
To underclock and use the coulour control you need an app (easier) and a custom kernel that includes the colour control feature, see the dev sections.
For battery life you should take a look at your use, settings and apps if you have a "bad" battery life, maybe something is draining your battery as unusual (it depends what is your battery life actually with what kind of use).
Can i install custom recovery with cf root? All these drivers are making me nuts. They arent doing well with windows xp :/

You need to flash the custom recovery via fastboot...
However, once you are rooted, you can use Flashify to flash things!

Just get the drivers fixed. If you run into trouble whilst modding your phone, you'll need your computer working with drivers to fix it so it's best to address that issue first. If you can't get the drivera working, DON'T ROOT. There are no useful shortcuts.

I would recommend PhilzTouch.. It's based on the latest cwm with a lot of added goodies! Ever since I've started using Philz, I've never looked back!

I don't use PA, so I'm not sure. However, the PA team has made a complete overhaul in their approach towards the rom. That's why you can't see any specific PA rom settings anywhere.
Besides that, the align thing needs to be done either at source or by decompiling the systemui.apk afaik.

Android 5 Nexus 5 OTA UK Release

Is there anyone from the UK who has had the OTA update for their Nexus 5?
I keep checking but it says I'm up to date.
I haven't modified anything, apart from activating the developer options.

I havent recieved it yet
If you are that bothered you could just flash the factory images, this is XDA after all ? I flashed them on my UK N5 as soon as they came out
Hi. Yes I know that, but there has been some issues with doing it that way, although I'm tempted I'm not 100% confident. Give me a Windows / Linux PC / Laptop / Server any day Lol

Even easier way to flash it should you choose to if you get bored waiting for the ota, is to use this.

i used version 1.9.3
Did my Nexus 5 using this with no problems at all.

I updated my fathers Nexus 5 (locked boot loader, etc) manually. Just grab the OTA zip and adb sideload it through the stock recovery. No data was harmed during this update process.
I'm in uk, couldn't be bothered waiting so even with my crap knowledge of well pretty much anything, I side loaded the ota and didn't lose any data and to be honest it was pretty easy to do
If you're still locked, sideload the ota file. If unlocked flash the factory image. There's no point waiting IMO
I sideload the ota without any problems. The only thing I would say is that you have to be patient as some steps take longer than you might expect: wiping the cache took about 20 minutes for some reason on my nexus 5 but only a couple of seconds on my nexus 7. Be patient at each stage and it's a painless upgrade.
