[Q] Can I flash a recovery from Terminal Emulator? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

For some reason I can't get my PC to recognize my device in fastboot. I remember flashing a recovery from the terminal emulator once but I don't remember how I did it.

If you are running Win 8 or 8.1 it won't, use a Win 7 PC. The command was "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" what did you flash TWRP or CWM?

@philohtc
He isn't talking about fastboot. He's taking about flashing it from terminal emulator directly from the phone.
@nickfury27
I'm not sure if you can but you can use a couple of apps to flash recovery. They're called Recovery Tools, and Flash Image GUI.

Short answer is YES.
However, if you don't know what you are doing, you can render your phone useless. You would have to manually mount the recovery block, dd, and set permissions manually. If you screw it up, you'll have an expensive paper weight.
My advice, take timmaaa's advice.

If for future reference you would like to know the commands for doing this, please send me a pm. I do not want to post it here as newer inexperienced ones could get themselves into serious trouble... Aka... No Usable Phone Land.

It probably is best to post the results here, that way all users can benefit from it. I try not to assist via PM as the solution isn't able to be seen by other members who might have the same question. Just make sure you put a disclaimer on it.

Do you mean the passkey? If so, it's eixplained in the "effin' manual" that comes with AAHK. Make sure you read the entire thing carefully.

I use Linux, so I'm not 100% certain about Macs (though it should be similar). But at least in Linux, it asks for your password because the script uses sudo. It's asking for password of the user currently logged in, so as to give the program administrative rights.

There is another method, the HTCDEV method, which is detailed in the PDF in post #7 in the "need help?" link in my signature (admittedly, a little roundabout). However, be warned that AAHK is above and beyond my recommended option. HTCDEV unlock can be detected, making rooting detectable even after you go back to stock (for warranty purposes). AAHK is completely reversible. It also makes the entire flashing process easier and gives you more ROM choice. For more detail, take a look at that link.
If you have absolutely no way to get your password, I would recommend that you try an Ubuntu LiveCD instead of using your Mac. It will let you run AAHK with sudo.

great man thanks. Don't care much about warranty, its from EBay anyways. Why does AAHK allow for more ROM choice? Just curious.

In short, HTCDEV only lets you flash ACE (Desire HD and Inspire 4G) ROMs, but not ROMs ported from other devices. Also, it adds an additional step to flashing any new ROM (you need to run a fastboot command from your computer with your phone connected). AAHK gives you S-OFF, giving you more complete control over your phone and letting you flash any ROM (including ported ones) without that extra step.
Alright got root and JellyTime on my phone. I bought this phone from EBay and havent activated it with AT&T yet. Will having root and a custom ROM prevent me from having it activated?

I really hope that I don't offend anybody here, but these are my views as an I.T. Tech for the past 7 years;
Aside from the fact that all OS's Apple puts out are inferior in just about every way imaginable, both mobile and desktop, the company is a Naziistic morals-less organization whose only impressive creation is the iSheep. Some how they've created a cult of people who have too much money and are willing to spend it on the latest thing put out. By now, anyone who owns an iPhone 4 is a social outcast. And let's face it, the only reason there are no viruses on macs is because even virus writers and script kiddies don't recognize it as an OS worth mentioning.

thought someone might of answered this by now but you can grab the cwm by shabby penguin and extract the recovery.img from the tar file and then using heimdall try this command from terminal
./heimdall flash --recovery recovery.img
of course you need to cd where the recovery.img is at and your phone needs to be in download mode.
DIsclaimer; I am not responsible for any damage to the device nor have i tried this on the blaze.
I think this should work but again I've personally never done it on the blaze.

[Q] Htc inspire boot problem

Hey there this is my first post here.
I have problems with my HTC INSPIRE 4G.
When i shut down or reboot my device take a long time in black screen, after that HTC logo an vibrating.. it takes like 5 minutes, i mean 5 minutes vibrating. after that vibrating stops and short time after that the CM9 logo and start. the whole process is about 10 minutes.
I don´t know if this is a hardware problem or software. Today i was trying to update my radio with fastboot. but i don´t even finish the process. in the part of ADB reboot, the device reboot and since that the problem is present.
What can i do? i can not get into recovery mode or bootloader.
i made a little research and over there is a procedure for fixing the soft brick with fastboot, but i don´t know if this is a brick or what.
Please Help
PS. Sorry for the bad english.
Your bootloader is messed up. Did you buy your phone used or did you root it yourself.

See if you can use aahk to flash a newer hboot version. It may not be able to because of the slowness. You can also use a PD98IMG to flash hboot from bootloader. I would try the aahk method first though.

Do you know how to use adb. You can boot to bootloader from pc using adb with the "adb reboot bootloader" command. If you can I have a PD98IMG you can load onto root of sd card that will prompt to install from bootloader screen. Due to the slowness though you will have to be patient.

You place that file in the root of your sd card (outside of any and all folders). Once you are in hboot, the system will check for it automatically, then it will ask you if you want to apply the update.

As teichopsia said load it on root of sd and boot into bootloader. When using adb to reboot you will end up in fastboot and will need to select bootloader. Give it time after that to find the image. Also in the future you will want to flash radios using the same method. All inspire radios are packed into a PD98IMG. You shouldn't need fastboot to do anything.

Trouble updating to 4.4.3

Hi Guy, and thanks for a lovely forum.
I'm currently running 4.4.2 on my Nexus 5 rooted and with Exposed Installer and GravityBox[KK] (which has a modify kernel for the Exposed installer). I want to install the new OTA-update (4.4.3) but the installation always get aborted (unexpected counting) or something. Dose The EI and GB[KK] interfere with the update process or by the modify kernel or both?
Do I need to uninstall EI and GB[KK], unroot the Nexus 5? In that case, how? Or do a factory reset or di I need to install totally back to stock 4.4.3?
I'm running a Mac (the only computer i own, and I have on internet connection at home so I use my Nexus 5's 3G and use hotspot to the Mac so it's not possible to install ROM's/update via my Mac cause then I will not have an internet connection during the installation process).
Is it possible to return back to stock on my Mac? In case how?
Dose anyone know how to fix this problem or are able to help me solve this problem? All answers are appreciated. I really need to get the 4.4.3 update. It dose not matter if I need to do a full "wipe"/factory reset, I have everything backup.

does anyone know how to do this then install overdose or gingerclone v2? sorry for posting here didn't have 10 posts yet
No, I believe you can use superoneclick to root without SD but you will need an SD card to flash a new ROM.
Unless you (or find someone to) make a hiemdall one click flash of a ROM, to the best of knowledge there isn't one like this made
But if you borrow an SD from someone rooting is quick

No, I believe you can use superoneclick to root without SD but you will need an SD card to flash a new ROM.
Unless you (or find someone to) make a hiemdall one click flash of a ROM, to the best of knowledge there isn't one like this made
But if you borrow an SD from someone rooting is quick
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2221030
See post 27 in the link above for a manual method that works with both windows or Linux or use superoneclick to automate the process
Best of luck!

OFF TOPIC BUT i INSTALLED THE BLAZE 4G, WAS THAT A BAD IDEA?
nope, your fine
also i looked and i think the most updated version of version 5 can be found in post 17 HERE
I know some people had issues a bit with it but the download link is working if you want to give it a shot.
Id have to dig through my files and check but i may have some more updated versions that ricandroid and i were working on... but the project kinda just stopped
ill look for ad_vitamin then too (which is almost identical to go_v5 but better in my opinion) as soon as i can
wont be near my files until tomorrow at the earliest
for now try out a few roms, make backups of the ones you like and as always
happy flashing!
As promised
neXus_GB.zip
neXus_CM.zip
ad_vitam.zip
happy flashing!

thank you! i love go_v5! its so awesome lol I had the modem working once but now the modem doesn't install on go_v5 and for ad_vitam. I choose wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, install the zip, then wipe dalvik cache and reboot. Am I doing something wrong?
Well these ROMs include a modem that should work fine, if you are having issues there is a thread with all the modems for this device and it is possible that another may work better for you
Glad you like the ROM!

nope none of the modems work am I doing something wrong? Could you tell me the steps you did to make go_v5 and ad_vitam work? I get E: unknown volume for path [/sd-ext] when I choose to wipe dalvik. At the end of the installtion for aroma for go_v5 I get set_perm_recursive()expects 4+ args, got -109755640 I don't know if that is an error or not
Nothing special
Wipe all partitions
Flash ROM
Reboot
That's it
I don't think it could matter if you have no ext partition on SD card, but feel free to make one if you think it will help

weird when you said that ad_vitam worked lol. What do you recommend using to back up the roms? and how do you update the su binary? it keeps popping up saying its outdated. Thanks for everything you've done
Just the normal nandroid backup method through cwm recovery
I tend to keep a copy of two or three favorites on SD card and any others I may want on pc

I tried the nandroid back up through cwm and it just vibrates and stays at the tmobile sidekick 4g welcome screen lol. what about the superuser su binary? how do i fix that error and is there a way to see emoji on this phone?
In truth its been well over a year since I used the sidekick, as far as I recall nandroid worked just fine
You can update the su binary easily through an app, its out dated on all ROMs on this phone I'm sure
Emojis? I guess use another SMS app that supports it?

thanks, what app updates the su binary? sorry been a iPhone user for too long lol
If I remember right when you get that message a link will show to download an app from the market, run the app once or twice and all should work well
If not than just search for something like su binary fix updater or whatever in the play store and you'll find it
But in truth I think most root apps and adb should work even without doing so
Oh, and glad to here you left the dark side, even if it is for a phone that hasn't been updated in too long, the sidekick has much potential but lacks the devs
Best of luck!

thanks! I tried doing the backup through the recovery but when I restore it hangs at the tmobile sidekick 4g boot screen. And which rom takes up the least amount of space? I get low storage on the phone :/ theres no way to assign the app to install on sd card?
Not sure why it hangs, may have been a bad backup or you forgot to wipe before restore?
Not sure which ROM is the smallest but yes you can store apps on SD, best to create an ext partition and put them there over fat32 partition.
There are apps in the play store and many as well on xda, just search around an youll find some as well as instructions
