[Q] Need Root (A long story) - Motorola Atrix 2

So a friend of mine dragged me into trying to help this woman who thinks her son was taken in by a cult. (I call it crazy but what do I know) He dropped off the phone an Atrix 2 and bailed. They want to see the deleted messages. Issue is that recovering them requires root and it seems I have that fun little issue that requires a factory reset before adb can figure out its magic. (I think a factory reset would create the deleted messages unrecoverable) Been reading every darn thread I could and still can't seem to find a solution. I kinda doubt there is one to be honest. But if anyone has something that might work I don't mind giving it a shot. Oh yeah you might notice its my first post but I haven't really had any issues with rooting before and to be frank I am just not really into these types of things enough to be able to give back to the community well. My apologies.
I have tried 1click methods, apk's, adb (fresh install on a new hard drive, had one layin about) drivers, inf changes, you name it I probably tried it.
Anything to be done?
Here's to the hope someone can help.

Amen to that, brother! :sly:
Anyway, regarding your query, I looked around and found this. It doesn't seem to require root so it might be just what you're looking for.

Also if you factory reset it doesn't overwrite the memory so you should still be able to recover them if you know where to look and prey to god that the memory doesn't get overwritten by something else

[Q] Please Help! Where do I start?

I'm very new to this whole root thing. I just got my SCH - I500 like 2 weeks ago.
I have figured out how to root my phone getting SU intact, but I don't know what Im suppose to do from there.
I tried getting CwM to work, but I have failed to figure out how to do it. I spent around 3-5 hours just reading forums trying out new things.
And, do you need a recovery? Cause I seem to have a problem getting it to work. What do you need to do once you've rooted your phone? What are the potential possibilities I can do with a rooted phone? What do you do once your phone is rooted and recovered properly? There's just so much I dont know.
I just need a little guiding as to how to begin. I'm a fast learner, I'm just looking for a little bit of guidance, that's all.

cant say it much easier than that. This is for Mes though and you did not specify.
Thanks! I'll take a look through this.
And yeah I meant for my Mes.
Sooo I tried using the .tar file and then i finally just was like idk wtf im doing anymore I quit...
I went to factory reset my phone and now im stuck at the SAMSUNG loading screen and it was making robot commands through the speaker and now it wont do anything.
how do i just fix my phone back to normal
i learned my lesson and am no longer ever going to try this ****
Robot sounds. Was it a lady voice. dui you have a voodoo kernal on your phone? What have you all done to your phone? Did you try pulling battery and restarting? Some things you do can take up to 20 minutes on reboot.

I started with the base model and then went through step six. I got the .tar file onto my phone and then I didn't know if I had done it correctly so I factory reset my phone.
And yes it was some droid sounding lady. I almost thought it was my computer for a second cause I was sitting at my desktop haha. Kinda freaked me out.
And no I dont even know what voodoo is and I hardly know what a kernel is.. :-/ I really should of done my research before I started doing this stuff.
As long as your reset all is good. It does take some time to learn everything. It helps to read through all pages of posts as well not just first one. Just read read read and read again. : D

Haha yeah I'll remember that for the next time. I did a little reading, but I started getting really impatient with the recovery **** aka CwM or whatever. Thats when I just started trying ****. I had no problem with rooting the phone and I even figured out how to use some AndroidSDK/tools commands or some **** like that lol idk how to explain it. Any place you would recommend me to go just read endless hours about stuff?

The .tar is never meant to be on your phone - it's installed via ODIN (which runs on a PC) And yes it's best to do a lot of reading before even ATTEMPTING any of it - so that you don't get stuck in a situation like you are . If you need one on one help, come join us in the IRC chat.

root/no root

Im coming from a droid x and find to root this alittle challenging. While I cant get root I havent found one that I like. My whole purpose if to just get rid of bloat. After my last attempt I got crappy reception and wanted to unroot. I did and reception was back to normal. After all the problems and what with the gingerbread files I didnt want to go that route with that radio. So what are my options? With the last root attempt I used the 1 click method, was that my problem? Do I need to read up more on adb commands. Or should I say screw it and stay stock? There are multiple roms out there but havent found one for my particular needs. I know I bought this phone to learn more and be a challenge but this is trully a pain in the ass. So comments advise is greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't give up if i were you, rooting is the way to go. And ya thunderbolt is "different" but it seems from here on out most lockdown phones will be this perplexing at times, but good news to use, some companies have given up and will open up there future phones boot loaders. And its not because it lock down it just because they weren't "meant to be rooted and optimized for the user".
It seems weird that your reception got worse due to rooting, i have not heard that problem before or seen it posted in these threads. Most of the complants from rooting is either having random reboots, or the unfortunate brick or root didn't actually work for them.
Just make sure your up to date with the froyo radio when you were rooted, I know you cant check now, but maybe you used an older one the auto root method was using? Its worth a check. The newest one has had some good reception Verizon sent in a OTA.
And i used an auto one click way and it worked for me so it may depend on what one you used. But its advised to use adb.
Also there are a lot of basic de-bloat roms out there, they are just buried at the end of this forum, and never get updated because once they are de-bloated there is not much left that needs to be updated.
And dont worry about the Gingerbread problems, I wish i never left Gingerbread, i have had more problems on froyo then i was on gingerbread. With froyo i still have problems, but Gingerbread seems to run so smoothly, and a new leak is hopefully around the corner, there was one up but it was taken down and senior moderators said its coming be patience.
hope this helps
All rooting does is give you access to system files. There's no way that it would mess up your radio.
I'm also curious where the "1 click method" is.

Thanks for the link, in my search I had a couple of other ways to do it but I did search.
Rooting is the only way to TRUELY enjoy this phone and all it has to offer IMO.
Ok well all of a sudden my phone cant receive call or make them but can make and receive texts? Any ideas on that. I got a phone call yesterday but it was a little wack. Called tech support and now no calls.

[Q] I need help.

Today, I acquired a infuse 4g, off contract. I wanted to mess around with android, as my current phone is an iphone, and maybe switch over.
One of the first things I tried to do was tether my iphone to my infuse using mywi. I soon discovered android doesn't work with ad hoc networks. I googled a couple fixes, and decided to try my hand. I have never touched android before. I found this thing that said I could. So I went for it. After reading a few guides, I decided the first step was to root it using superoneclick. That went fine. Then, I read the instructions and it told me to 'flash the zip file using a recovery rom' which was total gibberish to me. So I did some more googling and found a modified 3e recovery thing for the infuse. I used some file system app to put that where it was supposed to be, but then saw that I needed clockworkmod to be able to flash things. By this point I realized I was far, far over my head, but stupidly pressed on. At about the same time, I also extracted the zip file from exop.pro, and replaced the wpa file that existed already in system/bin with the one from the zip. I also booted into recovery mode, and tried to install clockwork mod, which failed even though as far as I can see. Now, when I turn my phone on, everything is ok except that it can't scan for wifi. I assume this is because I ****ed with the wifi file. I've basically decided to give up at this point, so please, just tell me how to made it work again and I'll promise to not **** with it anymore. Also, I neglected to make a backup. Stupid, but I didn't know how and didn't want to go through another huge thing.
tl;dr
I tried to make it so I could connect to ad hoc networks on my infuse 4g and ended up destroying my wda_supplicant file in system/bin (i think) and
Google the original file you replaced, ' wpa supplicant file download for infuse 4g'. Next time save a copy or backup of whatever your doing.
Thanks, but I really have no idea what is what. Could you link me the right one? I'm sorry that I'm so useless.

this was your problem the first time... you need to read and study before you just start flashing things to your phone man. haha... us linking you somewhere will not help you figure that part out... and its an important part of tinkering with these phones in the way you are trying to.
rid yourself of the apple mentality where everything is spoon fed.
moving on, however, do what the guy previous to me said... find that file you downloaded. and do some reading, watch some instructional videos, focus on just rooting the phone properly for now. do that, then read, watch, ask questions like you are doing when you need to, then proceed.
read comments and stuff in forums about the ROMs you are flashing, what kind of problems do they have, what recovery is recommended for that particular ROM, stuff like that. just READ everything and anything you can about what you are doing....
the company that made your newly found OS has a nice little search engine called google... and it works pretty well if you know how to use it i'll keep an eye on this thread for you as others are probably doing so we can provide you with whatever answers you might need. good luck!
a good rule of thumb when flashing hax0red software to these phones is when something ****s up, 9/10 times it's just a little tiny thing you missed or did during the install yourself... so back to square one, and pay close attention to detail. these phones can be a little touchy when flashing ROMs if you are not doing it exactly they way it is recommended.
perfect example of this: when i had my samsung moment... when i converted from 2.1 OS to 2.2... for some odd reason i would ALWAYS have to flash a little script zip to wipe the 2.1 data from the device before flashing the 2.2 zipped ROM to the phone... the 2.2 ROM was supposed to do this and take care of it completely for me, but even though it did, the only way it would work properly every time i was going from 2.1 to 2.2 was to flash that zip beforehand...
hope that long rant provided some useful insight
Thanks.
But I have read the instructions on the stuff I'm trying to do, several times, and like I said, I'm more confused that I was at first.
I'm just not willing to break it any further.
So basically what I'm wondering now is, how do I put everything back to how it should be. Is there a way? Like, is there a way to load the original software back? I don't think restoring it to factory settings would fix what I did, but tell me if I'm wrong.
I just want everything back to normal.
Please.
Edit: I know it seems like I'm not doing anything to help myself, but I have a lot on my plate in life right now, and I also have absolutely no idea where to even start. Half of the terms you use mean nothing to me, and I'm just so overwhelmed.
I just want to know if there is some way to put it back to how it came out of the box.
Turns out that once the new wda_supplicant thing is ACTUALLY GRANTED PERMISSION TO EXECUTE, that everything works fine. Thanks guys
see... Knew you would figure it out man

[Q] Anyone local in s. Florida to help me?

Looking to meet up with a more knowledgeable member (I'll buy lunch/dinner) to help me root, cid, to be able to flash roms....
I am a little knowledgeable, but the chance of my bricking my phone does not weigh my options here at this point..there's seems to be too many steps for my background...
I have had the Inspire and been flashing roms left and right but to do this on the One X and type code etc. , is just not cutting it and need your assistance.
I appreciate any response!
Thanks in advance,

...I'm in Davie, FL.....
It's actually not that complicated. There is a One Click root tool that you use for root that does it all for you. You just plug your phone into any computer with the drivers installed and run the tool, and in a few minutes you are rooted, with no user input. For boot loader unlock, you will need to do something on your own but that just involves copying and pasting some text. You use a one click tool for that too. I'm sure if you search around on the root and boot loader threads you'll figure it out enough for you to do it on your own.
I'll do it if you fly me out to Florida. I'll even take a redeye so the airfare will be cheap.
There are one clicks available for root, unlock, and recovery. Just did it today. Wasn't planning tobdo it for a while, but I tried to use a keyboard mod on stock rooted, didn't work now I'm running Clean Rom 2.4 and couldn't be happier. But I have been flashing Roms for over abfew years, and many phones.

Honestly?
NEVER EVER EVER have someone else do this stuff for you.
If you ever come across a problem later on that needs to be fixed, where is your help going to be? these forums+your mind. if someone else does it for you, you are more likely to panic when something comes up.
it is INFINITELY better to understand what you are doing and do the work yourself vs having someone else do everything for you.
if it is too hard for you to accomplish after utilizing the tools and information available to you here, then you are not ready to do it or have it done to your phone. leave it stock until you ARE ready...actually ready, not just thinking you want it.

Help (if possible)! think my phone is done :(

This is going to be long!
If anyone has insight to this would be appreciated
Precursor: I am on CM9 nightly (7-27-12) with 6.0.1.0 non touch recovery (NS4G)
So last night I go to open my opera web browser and it would flash like it would open and instant close (no error message). I say OK thats weird and decide to reboot. Upon rebooted I am greeted with never ending amount of FC's from every app and service imaginable. I again say OK EXTREMELY weird and decide its time to restore my backup from yesterday.
I reboot in recovery and what do I get greeted with? Unable to mount /sdcard! Long story short after scouring google for about an hour I find that if I do a fastboot oem lock/unlock I should get back up and running. Thankfully that works and I install the newest 7/31 CM9 nightly.
I wake up today without my phone alarm going off when it should. Weird huh? I go to open the clock and get a FC from the clock application. Reboot and it works just fine. OK weird again.
Go to work and leave my phone on the counter to help a customer. I come back to the desk and my phone is in recovery mode? Uhhh what? I reboot the phone and it says "encryption unsuccessful" and the phone needs to wipe data and reboot to continue use...
I decide WTF why not, not like I can use it. At this point I'm worried though. The phone reboots to recovery and I guess does a data wipe (takes 3-5 mins) and reboots. Now I am stuck on the CM9 bootscreen and won't go past.
I have some ideas as to get the phone (hopefully) back up and running. Just curious what this sounds like to anyone more knowledgeable then me (especially the part where it tried to encrypt my phone without me touching it!)
Any thoughts or help is appreciated!
Edit: I tried copying files to sdcard from recovery using mount usb storage. The files copy over and as soon as I leave the mount menu and go to install the zip files WHICH I SAW ON THE SDCARD they ARE NOT THERE anymore.
Edit2: It still lets me install the CM9 7/31 nightly which I had saved on the phone yesterday. Even after wiping everything and reinstalling the ROM I can't get past the CM9 bootscreen
Edit3: Tried fastboot, odin, nothing works. Even after odin I still get the CM9 boot screen. Pretty sure something is messed up to the point of I need a new phone. FML!
YESS!!!
YES I WANT ATTENTION.
I Have exactly the same. Mother of smartphones Somebody help us!
Its the internal Memory thats messed up yes, But Please somebody fix this Bullcrap. We don't have the knowledge but I will gladly donate to you who fixes it!

I HAD THIS SAME EXACT PROBLEM
Temporary solution: heat the phone up with a hair blow dryer. get it hot but not so hot that it melts things. it will be able to boot up and work. I used this method so i could copy my sd card to my computer and wipe everything off
Permanent solution: turn your phone in for repair. there is no remedy to fixing this. apparently the circuit board or chip is bad and you can't fix it.
Luckily I had best buy black tie protection and I am waiting on my new replacement phone.

You can have mine lol x) And Yep i fix computers for friends and so on their friends and this sounds like Nvidia was behind the chip... xD
It wouldn't matter who actually makes a chip if the heating it up is a temporary fix. That is a OEM issue. Basically think xbox360 rrod with the warped boards the solder melting/failing and the chips get loose etc.
Unless heating up failed flash storage temporarily makes it work. Which I doubt is the case but don't actually know. Brings back memories of putting failing HDD drives in the freezer though.
Well this is my official goodbye to the Nexus S forums (not like anyone cares haha). Just got my shiny new Galaxy Nexus. Have a great night everyone and happy modding!

Unfortunately that is good only if software screwed up your phone. In my case and I'm sure others when it is hardware failure, that won't work :\
