[Q] App Notification Sounds are not overriding system default - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Nexus 5 - Carbon Rom - Nightly 06092014 (Problem is also persistent in CM11 M7)
I am attempting to set individual notifications for specific apps (Hangouts, Gmail, etc), but for whatever reason, it appears that I am unable to do that.
In Hangouts for example, I have the notification set to "Hangouts Message" but when I view the actual sound setting, it shows, "Default ringtone (Themos)" but the actual notification sound that plays when I receive a message is Argon, which is what I have set as the system default.
This same behavior is consistent with any and all apps that allow you to customize the notification sound.
Is anyone else having this issue, and if so, have you discovered a workaround?

I'm having the same problem on my Galaxy S3 I747M.

[Q] SMS notification with Google Hangouts

Hi,
I'm using Google Hangouts for sending SMS.
When I receive a text message, it uses the system default notification sound (which for me is Pollux), not the one I choose...
In Hangouts settings, under notifications, this is displayed :
Default ringtone (Pyxis)
This is my phone ringtone, not my default notification sound !
If I touch the setting to change it, the sound I choose is selected, which is Hangouts Message... But when I receive an SMS, it is Pollux that is played...
I cleared data and cache of Hangouts and this doesn't change a thing.
Anybody got a clue ?
Thanks.
EDIT:
Nevermind, I found the answer to my problem. Here it is :
For the first time with this phone, I'm using Cyanogenmod's profiles... and by default, it overrides SMS notifications. I just configured my profiles so my notifications were not overridden and everything works normally !
The displayed notification ringtone is still wrong, but that is cosmetic and I'm OK with it...
EDIT2 :
I need more coffee - the default is NOT to override SMS notifications... I will redo my profiles

Hangouts not playing custom notification tone

I just updated my Sprint Samsung Galaxy S5 to Marshmallow stock via Odin (including a full wipe) and then I took the Sprint OTA to G900PVPU3CPE1. I am running with full encryption and have Chainfire's Systemless SuperSU Pro 2.74 installed. My /system partition is mounted with the default read only and my recovery is stock.
I copied my custom notifications, alarms and ringtones back over to the phone and they seem to be working fine with one notable exception. Google Hangouts keeps playing the application default message notification tone despite being set to my preferred custom tone. Hangouts will play the sample tone when I select the custom notification, but when a message arrives it plays the default stock tone instead. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be wrong?
Facebook Messenger also appears to be having problems playing the correct sound. It shows the default system notification sound, which has been set to a custom MP3, but plays the application builtin default instead. It also shows none of my custom notification sounds on the selection list.

Havins issues with Whastapp Notifications on 8.1

Hello all,
I would like to report a bug with whatsapp notifications since Whatsapp added notifications channels support.
Something is overriding my settings for the notifications, I don't like pop-ups notifications or vibration/sound notifications, so I always disable them, however, after i set the importance for whatsapp notifications to "Low" the next notification will vibrate and pop-up, once I enter the setting again, they will show "urgent" importance, so I don't know what is changing the settings.
A really annoying bug since I can't disable the vibration for every message.
I am facing the same issues. Samsung Galaxy S9. Have you found a solution?
Just saw this in another thread! Works fine! Just set it tô "high" and then change The sound tô "none"
"WORKAROUND!!
Somebody from What's App finally told me no android notification profiles are supported other than High or Urgent.
So what you do is set it to High then modify the settings under that profile and the preferences within WA.
Working fine for me now!"

Oreo notification channel bug?

I can't seem to get the 'long' vibration setting on Telegram working despite having the notifications set to 'urgent' in the system notification settings as well as vibration being turned on both in the app and the system notification settings.
It also seems that Oreo notifications are buggy in general - notifications that i've already read/dismissed still show up in the status bar from time to time, and the 'urgent' setting sometimes automatically changes in other apps such as Whatsapp. It seems the notification LED is also inconsistent - sometimes indicates that a notification has been received even when the screen is on.
Is anyone else running into similar issues?
I have not seen this particular issue, but I have noticed that I can no longer set individual app sound notification. I have a different Text notification and a different Hangouts notification but ALL notifications use the default system notification sound.
Edit:
Looks like there is 2 notification settings in the messenger app, one is for general notifications, the other is for new notifications. I only set the general notifications, after setting the new notifications sound, all is good. This is a really stupid design.

Click to collapse
Couldn't agree more about the design- I also get notification channels for individual people even though I have not pinned them, and those channels do not follow the general notification settings either
Same issue.
Both my alarm clock tone and any changes to the default sounds in apps are ignored. They all keep on using the default sound. Annoying for one particular app I use for health is full on like someone dropping a garbage can and by default full blast. It comes on at night regularly and there's a world of difference between being woken up gently and thinking there's a home intruder. Any advice?

Messaging VS Android Messages notification sound

problem:
"Android Messages" app uses "Default notification sound" instead of "Message received" sound.
the app was configured to have all the available notification types enabled (only "Other notifications" is available in the Notifications Category).
i've also checked and made sure "Android Messages" app has enabled all the "App permissions" (Storage, SMS,etc) and also "Other permissions" (Home screen shortcuts, Show on Lock screen, etc)
the native "Messaging" app behaves like expected. it plays the adequate notification sound
reproduce with:
1) set "Android Messages" as default sms messaging app (instead of the out-of-the-box Messaging app)
2) configure 2 different sound for "Default notification sound" and "Message received" sound in "Sound & vibration" settings menu
3) arrange to receive a sms (notification)
4) assert that "Default notification sound" was played instead of the expected "Message received" sound
questions:
is this problem being experienced by anyone else?
is this a known problem?
does it happen with all third party sms messagin apps?
SW version:
ROM version - Global Stable ROM
MIUI Version - V10.0.4.0.PDGMIFH
I'm pretty sure this is just a sound that works with the default messaging app only
for the time being, it sure looks like so
thanks
Yes. It's common. Xiaomi removed our ability to set custom notification sounds. Any third party app uses the default sound. It's quite annoying actually.
yeah.
skype, slack, gmail, etc, all sharing the same notification sound, sucks big time
Using something like MacroDroid, Tasker or setting a sound with Feel The Wear (only if you have a WearOS watch) could be something to consider in the meantime, I hope Xiaomi add this feature back in though. It's very annoying.
