I am new to the whole rooting and ROM modifying, but so far I have caught on quick.
I would a Motorola Droid 2 Global off of ebay for $20, which was apparently destroyed and only for parts. The description indicated that it did turn on, but it didn't work. "Okay", I said, I bought the phone and after 6 hours worth of work I was able to root it and install CM7. The phone works great, no problems.
I really had no idea what I was doing, but I wasn't worried about destroying the phone as I had another that I was using anyway. I just Googled whatever problem I had. Cleared the cache, data, and daplivk and then rebooted. Then I installed Pete's Root Tools, rooted my phone, and then installed CM7. This was my absolute first time doing it. I almost felt bad enough to send the phone back to the seller and let them know that I fixed it.
Anywho, I want to buy an android tablet to experiment on off of ebay. The ones I am looking at say that they work, but they turn on. Is an Android devices ever truly beyond repair? I'm willing to put the work into getting it to work.
No nothing that is man made is ever irrepairable. If it is repaired though depends on the skill and resources available.
$1 gets you a reply
Well I've seen one crushed into itty bitty bits. Would that qualify?
I'd say so. Although, I got a Nexus One cheap off of eBay that just had a broken power button. I sent it to HTC, and $50 later, it was just like new.
Yes! Haha, crushed to bits would count.
I'll have to see about sending this tablet in if it's just a problem with the power.
There are a few devices that are virtually unbrickable but if it can power on its often fixable.
I once saw a G1 dropped into a wood chipper. Pretty sure that was beyond anything short of divine intervention...
Not in my case...
Hi, I bought a HTC Hero and it was absolutly impossible to repair. At least, that was what they told me.
It can be fixed if the problem is caused by water.
Be luck in any case
Try an Eee Pad Transformer, they should always be recoverable because they have a read-only part that enables you to flash stuff onto it even if it's totally empty.

I saw someone selling a Desire with a busted screen for $20 i tried to buy it after seeing that you can by screens for it for cheap but they never got back to me
Hi, has anyone noticed the screen flicker a little when watching videos? I don't notice it on every video but I have a video that is a little bright and the video takes place in the snow and ice. I can see the screen flicker slightly during the whole video. At first I thought it might be my micro sd card so I tried youtube and some videos do it there also. Only seems noticeable on bright videos.
Also, all of the videos I watch stutter a little. Doesn't matter if its videos I have stored on micro sd or youtube. Anyone else have this?
Really want to keep the tab because around me they are hard to come by so returning it will suck. But everytime I think I might just keep it I find something else wrong:crying:
So far dust between gorrila glass and digitizer, screen creeking in left corner, burning smell from speaker and screen flicker and stuttering videos.
Anyway, hope no one else is dealing with this
Also if no one minds could you go to this link on your tab and see if this video has screen flicker for you guys too? I watched on my pc and I see no flickering.

Some refer to it as a problem due to "Didimm".

? What do you mean? You mean the dimmer? If so I was thinking that as well. Guess I do need to return it?
Thanks for getting back to me
Goggle "didimm" it is a feature from nvidia. Many notice it, some don't.
I for myself rarely see it. And if it doesn't matter for me.
Maybe compare it to a device in store to see if yours is defective?
Hmm, that article says that your eyes would never be able to see the difference - well, guess what - almost everyone can see it! I assumed it was a "dynamic contrast" - just like some TV's do, but whatever it is, it *is* noticeable and it *is* very annoying at times. At least give us the option to disable it when needed (like when watching videos etc). The problem is that it seems to do it in stages, and like I said, there are *many* folks that find it very annoying.

Dynamic contrast is even worse with anime. You don't know the feels I know.
perhaps this can help:

(requires root)
EDIT: It works!
just use the terminal emulator app (or adb shell) and do
Code:
su
echo "0" > /sys/devices/tegradc.0/smartdimmer/enable
Bam! no autodim until the next reboot

Great find! I too can confirm it works! Haven't noticed any degradation in screen quality/contrast either (although I guess it will effect battery life). Regardless, at least know we know we have the option to disable/enable as needed!
Thanks alot!
EDIT: What's strange (in my mind), is that if this feature is only for battery-saving, why wouldn't it be disabled while on AC power? That would be great if it would automatically disable this "feature" while on AC power, since the only goal is conserve power...

Ok so I am not going crazy and my old eyes aren't playing tricks on me. Well not really old (32).
So it seems that even if I return it for a new one that this problem will be on that one as well?
So I wonder if some have it worse than others? Maybe I will still get a new one. I just fear that I will get a new one and it will have even more problems than the one I have now
EDIT: After going to link provided it seems things happen "after" watching a video. Where as my problem is during videos. And not all videos it seems. The link I posted to youtube does it bad on my device. Plus am unsure about rooting because I may need to return it to bestbuy and i dont want the geeksquad trolling thru the device looking to see if i did anything to it like rooting

I would return to be safe. One issue for me would be questionable but if I had two I wold return it. Hopefully your next one will be good.
Where in STL are you?

Hey lardo. Thanks. Im thinking the same thing. Just sucks because bestbuy that close to me said it could be months before they get one in even if they order it for me.
Im in South County

I would *not* return it for this! It happens on all TF700's (the original link is for the Nexus 7, which behaves differently, I believe).
Again, it's not a flaw - it's by design. This setting will allow you to disable/enable it though (I would hope that Asus also adds a toggle for this in future firmwares).
But returning it for another is not going to help and you may end up with a unit that has a real problem...

The flickering: I would not return it for that. I'm sure all the tf700s flicker just the same.
The stinky speaker: I would wait for it to fail first, then RMA it.
The dust trapped under the screen: Exchange it even if its just one spec. I exchanged my tf300 for the same reason, and my tf700 screen is flawless. The screen is the most expensive and prominant part, it should be flawless.
A couple months seems long. my exchange took around four days. I would reccomend taking it in for exchange and seeing what their estimate for the date would be. If its too long, you can always back out of exchanging it. You could also give RMAing it a shot, that will take weeks (which is better than months)
Rest assured the fix I linked to does work. I even used Script mananger, and the scripts provided on that page to make a desktop widget to turn it on and off. Dont worry about rooting. Flashing the firmware from asus's website will unroot it without a trace, then do a factory reset and you're good to go.:good:

Hey jtrosky. I agree exchanging just for that reason may be silly, but I have other issues as well ( like video stutter, dirt under screen , creeking screen which I see others talking about so probably happens to them all, and burning smell from speaker. I do thank you for your respnse though. Oh and the screen problem I am talking about in this thread I did not notice on my Transformer Tf300 which I returned for the Tf700
For the Tapatalk users out there (with Tapatalk, the Sticky posts don't show unless you specifically look for them) - we've come up with a solution to the "Dynamic Contrast"/"SmartDimmer" problem.
Please check this great Sticky thread for details - lot's of good stuff in here - don't want Tapatalk users to miss it!

Well returned my tab today. Getting my new one on thursday. Hopefully all will be ok. We will see.
Also gonna root the new one when I get it and do the mentioned tweak from those in this thread. Thanks guys for checking into this for me:laugh:
Ok! WTF! I just got my new Tab and so far , It had white and red crust on the back of it. The power button is really raised up. And Mother [email protected]#$ it also has the burning speaker smell . I mean I have to put my nose to it but come on. Gonna check it out some more and see how it goes. I really hope this one is a keeper but not looking that way.
Also thanks again for those that posted a link about the dimmer issue
Hmm. All electronics smell like they're burning when they're new. Sure it's not just that new tablet smell? Anyway hope this one works out for you.

Thanks rightonred! Yeah I know. I'm gonna give it some time. Was really just mad about the crusty stuff on the back of it. Thought I would come to my home away from (XDA) and share my sadness. But yeah, I'm gonna give it awhile. So far the only other thing I have noticed besides the crust, wonky power button, is a little light bleed and haptic feedback is really really soft.
Hey all.
I'm new to posting in xda but have been a lurker for a few years. I've been unlocking and rooting devices for quite some time and LOVE xda as it is my go to source for anything and everything Android. Short introduction aside.
I bought my TF700T and dock back in October of last year and have loved it ever since. However just last week I encountered a problem. The right hand side dock locking port broke on the tablet. So when it's connected to the dock, there is nothing locking on the right side.
I noticed that this locking system is a small plastic shelf that the hook from the dock grabs on to. Well mine broke off.
How, I do not know and I'm sure I might have tweaked it just right to snap it off. So now my tablet cannot connect safely without having the entire right ride being freely able to swivel out.
*Note I am unlocked an rooted so my warranty is voided*
So I am looking for a possible diy fix. I was not able to find the small plastic piece that broke. However I've thought about maybe getting something similar in size and possibly gluing it in place. I've attached a photo for reference.
Any help and ideas are greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Hello!
I'm thinking about buying a TF101 32GB (incl. the keyboard thingy) from a good friend of mine for 1200 SEK (~€140)
The tablet is 1 and a half years old, but he has barely used it.
Everything is completely stock, no root, nothing.
Do you think I should go for it or leave it? Please, motivate your answers
Or should I just get another tablet? I don't want to spend more than 1300 SEK (~€150)
I'd mostly use it for:
- movies/tv shows
- taking notes in class
- perhaps a bit of gaming occasionally
- just messing around on the interwebz
Need advice ASAP!
Thanks!

Worth it !

Worth it!!!
If you are willing to spend around 150 € you will hardly find any better tablet for the money. You just need to be sure that tablet isn't defected in any way.
In my opinion the Transformer tablets are really great because on the keyboard (fast typing and longer battery life (the dock has battery in it)). The only bad thing I have found about ASUS' tablets is that they don't come with odin flasher. Odin is great to unbrick and factory reset phones or tablets. But I guess that it is exclusive only for Samsung devices (I don't know if for all but my Samsung Galaxy S supports it).
Go for the deal if the tablet is not defected!
There's a lot of resources here to help you root your tablet and flash roms, etc. I recommend EOS 4 and the Kat kernel
Go to your friend and tell him to let you take a look on it. Check every side of the tablet AND the keyboard to not have any defect. Turn it on and test the touchscreen. I recommend to download a free game and a free drawing app to test the touchscreen, and maybe a touch screen test app if it does exist. €140 is worth it if the screen is not cracked, the charger and the usb cable does work and if the touchscreen & keyboard does work without any problems, it is worth it. Ask him questions like "Was the screen or the case cracked?" Or "Did it have any defect and you sent it to repair?". If he does say that he messed up his system some time ago, it isn't really a problem as soon as it is working now.
Again, make sure you ask him about any cracks, defects, issues, repairs, screen scratches, quarranty, screen replacement and everything else and put them in a balance to be sure if it is worth it. I mean.. Don't ignore a cracked screen or a defect, the repair could cost as much as he sells his tablet, and you will just double the price plus you have to waste time with the repairs.
I am writing right now from a TF101, and I have to say that it's working like a charm. It fell down three times: on an iron bench, on the street and on my kitchen's floor and all it has got is some scratches that can almost not be seen, and the alluminium case has a 0.4cm scratch and it got a small curve, but I have to just buy a screen protector and a protector case to make sure next time I won't get it broken. After all these times it fell down on the floor, it works like a charm and without any issues! I paid €400 JUST for the tablet, and you are paying €140 on the tablet plus the keyboard, which will have a touchpad and a keyboard. As the others said: if no defect, GO FOR THE DEAL!

After having used my tab a couple days, I noticed the paint around the pogo pins was worn off, as though someone had used it (extensively) with the keyboard, which I do not own.
I realize it may be used when flashing whatever wired stuff they do before sending it, despite it being the og, Chinese rom, but also, the middle 2 pogo pins themselves are black with discoloration and "crud", while the outer two are ostensibly gold, but discolored themselves.
Also, the tablet will randomly turn off and force a manual restart about once every two days, which I can live with, but I was under the impression I was buying a new tablet, not a used one.
Send it back. The only thing they should be flashing is Google play store. I'd rather them not even do that.
I have been tempted to, but I'd assume that shipping would be on me at least one way, and since, unfortunately, there hasn't been much progress made with a12, I'm thinking I'll just end up using this as a cautionary tale re: importing Chinese tablets :/

I have lived this!
I sent back mine for repair.. Got someone else broken one back. 2 months it took to sort.
I got from giztop..the tablet was fine but when it went back they didn't sort one of the issues out..won't import again that's for sure
I feel for you all. It seemed like a great deal for the specs, but I really should have waited. The only reason I bought it is because my awesome mipad 4 got borked when I screwed up the partitions and I can figure out how to fix it. In fact, I wish I'd just bought another one. They are great tablets and the CPU in it is great.
Now the serial number is bolloxed and widevine aswell selling on isn't an option
