[Q] 4.4.3 update made phone unuseable - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. i have Nexus 5 sim free version. it was on 4.4 later upgraded to 4.4.1 followed by 4.4.2. till 4.4.2, it was great. a day before yesterday i received 4.4.3 OTA update and installed it. after installation,
1- phone started to hang a lot.
2- unless i push power button and re press it, phone remains hanged.
3- i tried flashing 4.4.2 but it stucks at boot loader screen as well and certainly i can't use power button to un freeze it.
4- phone starts well sometimes but there is no display but only colorful dots instead of screen, if i press and re press power button, start screen comes back.
plz help me to find a way so i can flash back some earlier android version.
thanks

flash the factory img http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/tutorial-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2513701
and what do you mean sim free nexus 5? all nexus 5 have a sim card slot.

Flash the 4.4.3 factory image and give it another try. If it still has problems just flash an earlier factory image. And if it still doesn't work you have a hardware issue

What do you mean? Does it successfully flash but just never boot?
Did you Flash all the factory images? Or just system and boot?

have you tried unlocking the bootloader? maybe try to unlock it then flash the factory img. or you can try unlocking it, flash a custom recovery, superuser, and a rooted stock rom(maybe this will work for you?)

OK but you Flash the images whilst in the bootloader mode. What does a frozen bootloader look like? What was the output error message when you used fastboot to flash the factory image?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

i have unlocked bootloader after couple of tries because phone kept on freezing even in bootloader mode. but as soon as i put phone in bootloader mode, it freezes. everything was fine before 4.4.3 OTA update. phone shouldn't freeze in bootloader mode. i think that 4.4.3 update has also corrupted recovery.

it looks like that nothing is working, neither touch nor physical buttons. i can't change options with volume button. i.e. start, recovery, etc etc. u know what i mean. once in bootloader, one can change the options via volume buttons but i can't. on pressing the power button, phone restarts.

Boot to bootloader. Connect USB. Fastboot flash full factory images. If there is an error. Tell us what it is. If you cannot flash the full factory image, you'll need to send it for repair

Try and boot into your "backup" bootloader. You can get into this by holding Volume Down AND Volume Up AND Power. You'll notice it is different bootloader because the bootloader version is different from the one you get if you just hold volume down and power.
Maybe that will work?

Pure stock unrooted Nexus 5 in bootloop

hi,
i got a problem with my nexus 5 which is pure stock and unrooted . i think it was a SOD,the phone was turned off automatically . i charged it for next 5 hours. but still it doesnt boots up. i have gone through this and this links for help. Following the second link by pressing volume down and power button the phone wont enter bootloader mode. But when i connect the phone to a pc while pressing the key combination it enters the bootloader mode for a second and switch off then turn on again to bootloader and this cycle continues. Bootloader mode is not standing there permanently for flashing again too. also if i connect phone to a charger it keeps on showing google logo and then turn off and again this cycle continues.
Any help to this issue is welcomed.
More than likely corrupted data somewhere. U need to factory reset/wipe data. I've only ever used custom recovery but I'd assume that you could do this is stock. Have you tried holding both volume buttons down and power then selecting recovery in bootloader (some seem to have 2 bootloaders)

i have tried the key combinations ,the phone will enter into the bootloader just for a second and screen turns blank again and then back again to bootloader. this keeps on repeating and as a result i cant choose any options to enter recovery or reboot or wipe data. :crying:

Is your bootloader even unlocked? Sounds more like a hardware issue to me especially if you haven't put any custom ROMs on it or anything.

I would strongly suspect hardware issue then. These Nexus devices are really hard to brick in software. Can't speak for the Nexus 5 specifically since I haven't had it that long but it behaves almost identically in how you unlock, custom recovery, root, and ROM to my old Galaxy Nexus and I put that thing through the ringer with how many ROMs I put on it and never had a problem I couldn't fix by going into the bootloader and using fastboot.
I would RMA it if I were you unless you're feeling adventurous and want to use iFixIt or something. From the way you describe it, it sounds like the connection to the battery is going loose. Could be something else but if you can't get into the bootloader there's nothing you can do software side.
This happened 2 days ago to my girlfiiend and I tried any possible combination to make it boot, but i just didnt, i called google for an RMA because it seemed like a hardware failure because it didnt get past Google Logo , not even for the Stock Recovery..
Phone automatically turned off and never turned on again.
So i recommend calling google for a replacement.

[Q] Imp:Phone wont start up.PLS HELP

Hi,
So i decided to install NOVA launcher and kept it as default launcher.
No when i wanted to go back to google launcher the system was getting crashed and some error like : "systemui" is not working was poping up.
Meanwhile i was getting notifications of whatsapp messenger and i could use it but when i was trying to exit the app , again the problem occured.
Thats when i decided to reboot the phone to my bad luck it is not going further after "FOUR CIRCLES(red, green, yellow and blue) which comes after google logo.
I had previously owned S2 and when i used nova launcher and tried to switch back ( aftr uninstalling nova) it automatically use to use google launcher.
Please help.
Thanks & Regards,
V
If it won't boot you may have to fastboot the factory image can you get into recovery and do you have a custom recovery If so try clearing cache in it

I need you to answer a few questions before anyone can help...
Do you have a custom recovery installed? (Eg. TWRP or CM?)
- If not, are you rooted?
- If you do, have u made a Backup through your custom recovery?
- If you're not rooted, do you have warranty?
- If you don't have warranty, how long have you had you're phone for, because Google provide warranty for a certain amount of time with your phone.
Basically, if you have a custom recovery installed or are not rooted with warranty, don't panic.
In not an advanced user but I know done stuff... And there's always a way!

Oh, and also, see if you can fastboot by pressing the power button and volume down whilst booting up. If you can't, then try pressing power button + volume up + volume down whilst booting up.

This is probably why it crashed. Your phone doesn't have a launcher to boot into. That's the reason it is boot looping. As mentioned earlier, you'll have to flash the factory image.

Yea, i feel the same. I forgot it was google launcher and its a nexus phone.
If it would have been some other trebuche launcher(like in samsung) , this problem would'nt have persisted.

That is the stock recovery. You can press both volume buttons at the same time, to show the recovery options.
Flashing the factory image is very easy. You put your phone in fastboot mode, plug it into your computer, and simple run the Flashall.bat (or .sh depending on your OS.)
Touchwiz Home in Samsung devices does not rely on google search. Our Nexus has a launcher that requires google search to run. Otherwise you can install AOSP launcher.

boot loop - can't navigate bootloader to get into recovery mode

hi there,
I'm running CM11 nightly late feb. For no apparent reason my phone went into a boot loop this morning (n.b. I didn't flash a new rom or installed a new app). Now it constantly reboots (literally) and doesn't get further than the CM11 boot video or google logo.
If I press volume down and power, it will head into bootloader - but - I can't navigate beyond 'shut down' or 'restart bootloader'. It doesn't execute two consecutive volume up or down commands. In other words, it's impossible to get into recovery mode. Also, because my phone doesn't boot further than the video or logo, I can't make a fastboot or adb connection via my laptop.
Does anybody know how I can fix this issue? I'm clearly running out of luck. Many thx in advance!
reflash recovery?
Try to boot into recovery with cmd: fastboot boot TWRP.img (TWRP or your current custom recovery)
Then restore a nandroid backup or wipe data/system/dalvik
You can still flash the factory images. Fastboot mode is enough. Guide

Well the issue is that it only stays for a fraction of a second in bootloader, which gives it enough time to navigate one step up or down. Not enough time to get into recovery.
How can I do what Primoken said? It doesn't seem to be possible to do a flash when the phone is constantly rebooting?
Thx for helping me out guys, much appreciated!

It's not a power issue. Also unscrewed my phone to see if that was what caused it. Nothing in there, mechanism functioned correctly.
UPDATE: For some reason my phone booted up out of nothing. I managed to flash an older ROM via CM Updater (through settings)- which seemed to work. Apps were updated and it was running normally. But after a couple of minutes it restarted out of the blue and now back to square one again.
Guess there's a chance I'll probably get a normal start up soon. Is it a good idea to do a factory whipe restart through the settings menu? Or is Primokorn's method safer?

If you're not able to go past the Google screen, Switch off the phone and then Press and Hold down the Power Button+vol down button till you feel a vibrate.. The bootloader will open... Use the volume buttons and navigate to Recovery and and then press the power button to go into the recovery... You can perform a factory reset from there...
But, if you aren't able to access the recovery and as you are fully stock, there isn't much you can do about it...
You could try unlocking the bootloader and then performing a factory flash but since it's fully stock you can RMA it...

Since you are on 100% stock, I think your emmc (flashchip) got faulty like in many other nexus 5 bootloop topic around in xda.
But you can try to reflash the factory images again. Read the first 3-4 sticky thread in the general forum.

Do what Mr Stunts says. If it's new and that doesn't work, and it should, take it back. You shouldn't need to be unlocking this and that just to get a new phone up and running.

Well, I don't think there's anything you could do.. If the eMMC is fried, motherboard needs to be replaced..

I also have bricked my M8

So I was playing around trying to get Sound MOD to work(dont ask me y..I was bored) And I have bricked my phone. I am stuck on the white HTC screen the one at the begining of the boot..the one that says this build is for development purposes..blah blah. and it is just stuck there. Adb wont find device or nothing..I am truly screwed..yes?
Well, ADB wouldn't be able to do anything at that point anyway. It's not fully booted, or in the bootloader.
Have you tried powering it off, and booting to the bootloader? From there recovery, do a factory reset, and see if it boots then?

Adb wont find device or nothing..I am truly screwed..yes?

If your screen shows something you are not bricked.

Well, ADB wouldn't be able to do anything at that point anyway. It's not fully booted, or in the bootloader.
Have you tried powering it off, and booting to the bootloader? From there recovery, do a factory reset, and see if it boots then?

They is no way of powering it off..its just stuck on that screen. No buttons do anything. Guess ill just have to let the FULLY CHARGED..lol..battery run out then try to get into bootloader.
Have you tried holding down the power button for around 10s? That usually does it.

ok..so I got it to go into hboot..And Im trying to factory reset..but it just keeps taking me to twrp again. and everytime I try to do something in there in just boots back to that htc screen. I am noticing when it first boots into hboot it quickly says something about wrong image.

Which menu options are you selecting in TWRP? And to factory reset, you would WANT to be in TWRP, so I don't know why you're making it sound like that's a bad thing...

So you've tried doing a factory reset, and afterwards it still just gets stuck during boot? And do you mean it boots back to the HTC boot screen after restoring an image and rebooting, or you select "Restore image" (or whatever) and it instantly reboots and gets stuck?

I was trying to do this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2737498 and after doing what issue 1 said I rebooted and got a unauthorized device warning. was finally able to get back to hboot and recovery but nothing would work..wiping, factory resetting..nothing. I just had to order new one. I hate mistakes that cost $..lol
Its my own dumbass fault. I shouldve just let it alone. Was running great on viper 1.6
Have you tried flashing any Rom? You can't boot into the OS following a factory reset in TWRP, you will always end up with what you're getting

It is impossible for me to flash a rom. Cant get into a recovery to do it.
Ok so update: I was SOMEHOW able to get into recovery(TWRP) but no matter what i try to do it just reboots back into recovery..any ideas?
EDIT: gonna try verizon RUU. Fingers crossed
Just a thought here. TWRP can install from USB. I have flashed from a thumbdrive in the past on an S3. You may be able to do same. I know this is a shot in the dark but may help.
Will it just sit at the recovery screen or does it boot before you touch anything? If it will sit at the TWRP main screen you should be able to boot into hboot via adb and try a reflash of twrp or CWM. Your recovery may be corrupt.
You're definitely not bricked. You're catching breaks left and right.

Would a moderator kindly close this thread as I have fixed my problem. Thank you!
After toying around with it for HOURS! Somehow I was able to get it to boot into hboot. Which from there was ablt to fastboot an RUU and profit! Funny thing is I had already made a claim with the Big Red V. Called them back to say that I had found my phone...too late claim already in..lol. Now I have a brand new phone on its way and a mini-tab and dev device I guess..lol
