Toolkits wouldn't be all that bad if they explained in detail what they were doing when they do it. They'd actually be a good way to learn about this stuff if they provided the details of what is going on.

The people that don't bother reading the stickies won't read this either

Unfortunately most people here are just users and not contributors. Contributors want to learn what they're doing and be able to assist others in learning. That's what xda was all about. Users just want something "cool" on their phone. Users use tool kits. If you know what you're doing they really don't save you any time.

I've used the WugFresh Root toolkit from time to time and it's helped me out.

Except for when something breaks and you guys (not saying you specifically) have no idea how to fix it.

Well only toolkits you should use are ADB and your device's stock flash tool like Odin.

Most of the commands aren't that difficult to learn. You definitely learn more by doing.
However, not everyone wants to learn. Toolkits are great for people who want a simple solution, and the well written toolkits cause no issues. The "don't use toolkits" mantra on this board is insulting to the creators of the tookits and is mostly just snobbery. If you don't want to use a toolkit don't use one.

Yep, another wasted thread! Members can make their own choices...

Sure but this forum is dedicated to people who do want to learn. So use a toolkit, but don't ask here for help when it goes wrong and refuse to learn when we point in the right direction.
Surely there is skill involved in writing Toolkits but it amazes me that some people still do it. Wasted talent IMHO. Let them come here and help the idiots who refuse to learn.
I don't see why not wanting to waste my time teaching Muppets to fish is snobbery. Can't root? DON'T root!
Some people can fly aeroplanes. Some cannot. Those who can, learned. Those who won't learn, shouldn't.

Yes. But it affects us all. They ask here for help but it's difficult to explain how to fix things because they have no clue. I can ignore these threads of course but there sometimes are so many of them, that actually coming here is undesirable.
So yes, they can make their own decisions, however when we strongly urge them not to, it's for their own good AND the greater good
The amount of Toolkit related "fix me" threads I've seen since 4.4.3 is ridiculous. I'm considering leaving for a while

Support for the tb? I'm a new tb owner coming from the incredible. I'd rather root it that way than adb. Plus i have a mac. Adb is too labor intensive for me. Last time I tried rooting with adb was with my Eris and that was a headache.

That's just ignorant and/or elitist. So someone not already familiar or comfortable with setting up/using ADB shouldn't be able to benefit from rooting? My father doesn't know anything about how Linux or Android work, should I have told him to just deal with the bloatware, etc.? Don't be such an ass.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
I dont think he meant that to be mean but its true if you don't have the slightest understanding of what your doing to your phone when you root it you are setting yourself up to mess something up. I'm way new to this and I spent hours and hours over two weeks reading everything I could find so I knew what was going on. And when I went through the process I was comfortable and when I couldn't get the custom firmware to flash I had the knowledge to figure out my silly mistake without freaking out or messing up my phone. But bottom line if you aren't willing to educate yourself enough to be comfortable with the things you said then no you shouldn't be rooting your phone.

In short, folks who root yet don't understand rudimentary things like adb are the same ones who are 100% reliant on others to fix their device when they break it.
Or, they perpetrate a fraud and dump it on Verizon.

Bootloader Unlock Volunteers (Test 3) $50 if works!

Hello,
Today I'm going to try test three of the bootloader unlock (the test two didn't work, please delete it).
I'm not responsible if this hard-bricks your device, no don't blame me.
OK, so pm me please if you want to try it.
Only ONE person with 50+ posts or 10+ thanks may try it (to make sure your not motorola).
So post here first so that we can tell who will test it.
Good Luck,
TCF38012
Why not try on your own device? If I was working a zip flash to unlock the bootloader, I'd be trying on my own phone, rather than enlist others who may possibly brick as result. And, as DX2Trip asked in "test two", have the devs seen this that you're experimenting with?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
You could do all this in ONE thread.

Should really be PMing one of the devs dude...best bet. Jim, rdavisct, alteredlikeness, JRW, cogeary...anyone of those guys can be found all over our dev section...shoot one of em a PM and I'm certain you will get your test...probably free of charge. The prize makes it sound that much more of a risk. (No offence) lol. So odds are more people won't want to take that chance ya know? Anyway...I really hope this is a break through and someone can crack this b!otch! Big props if you pull it off man.

There have been offers like this in the past. So please don't cast aspersions on the OP.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840550
The OPs offer is rather more generous in comparison.
Why do people always bother to see the post count and reps ? Its surely not a measure of how intelligent a person is.A person might be good but could have joined board late so he might be having less rep and posts. :/ We need to stop skeptical and embrace the help.
@OP : good luck with it.Some more details would be nice. All the best.
Edit : good example of what I wanted to say : http://i.imgur.com/v0H7z.jpg
The idea with the post count requirement was to make sure that motorola didn't create an account and volunteer to test it, and then go and analyze it, patch it if it worked, and then report back that it didn't either way.
Personally, I think that this may be unnecessary (although I have doubts about Moto's character, they definitely don't have the resources to be trolling dev forums in an effort to actively discourage development on year old hardware)
I would volunteer to test this, except that I fall just short of both requirements and I would also like to know what happened with the previous two tests before attempting this one (did they result in a brick?)
Again, as Fall of Enosis mentioned, the lack of replies by OP is a bit questionable. People asked legitimate questions in the first "test thread", and nothing was answered. Any good dev keeps up with his/her threads, and assures people with confidence by laying concerns to rest with some riposte. Not trying to cast any doubt on the OP's abilities, just a mention here of maybe taking a more proactive role in the threads he starts. My suggestion, to be taken or left alone...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
I am just going to assume that you will give us an over view of what you tried. We don't want people to get all pushy but it would be nice.
I'm also assuming the thread (x-files thread) a couple of days ago that ended in pm's was hashed out on back channels and this is a by product.
If I wrong well so be it but that's what happens when there is sooo little info.
Good luck.

You also have to understand that most of us have been here a longtime. We have seen the same common mistakes time and time again. It is necessary to read the rules of the forum during the sign up period. Which tell you that this is a big no no. Also it also gives you a heads up when you begin to create a thread in this section. To us its kinda a no brainer.
Sent from my LG-D801 using Tapatalk
Look I get it, the rules are very similar where I normally visit. People over there complain about the same search button, but is it really necessary for someone to be attacked like that of a pack of angry wolves. People don't mean any harm when they ask, and it's better to use your time being nice than rude in my opinion. It took me 20 secs to type a helpful response with a link in it is all I'm trying to get at.
Rules are rules, questions don't go in Dev.
Yes but again mypoint being... how many rude people and elaborate ways does it take to simply remind someone or inform them?

The more the better to get the point across, and no one is being rude, just pointing out the facts. However you sir seem to be a little overly sensitive. So please don't try and be a hero here, you will only loose a fight that has no merit.
Noone is trying to be a hero. No one is trying to win a battle. What's wrong with being cool to people? I think it's hilarious how you think I'm sensitive, I'm just making a point that you obviously have no life outside of your phone and this is your only opportunity in life to flex your nuts. Thankyou for proving my point SIR!!

By being rude and attacking not so savvy people all you do is detour future interested people away from the site. So when you think you're helping you're not.

Towelroot suits me fine. Anybody care to answer the original question?

It should work. Why not try it yourself and see whether it works or not and then report back in that thread?

I answered the original question. It shouldn't be used and the reason why is mentioned in the towelroot guide by the thread OP so do yourself a favour and read it instead of acting like no one answered your question.
...and if it suits you fine, just bloody use it and answer your own questions instead of creating pointless threads.

Helpful response and no you didn't answer the question I asked you answered something YOU wanted to answer. This could be a problem for you in later life I reckon......

Right so the fact that towelroot no longer works properly does not answer the question "will towelroot work"?
Ha ha oooooooook
ps I'm already later in life.

The question was 'Will towelroot work after latest update?'
Your answer was 'There are issues with towelroot anyway. Root properly. '
And you really dont see why I have a problem with your answer. Not matter how many times you try and post it ,you have not answered the question (Vin4Yak did make a reasonable attempt to answer in that 'it should work'. I can accept that)
Then to take this futher I'm yet to see why Towelroot 'has issues' or 'no longer works properly'. I've headed over to the 3700 post thread about it, and still I'm yet to see anything telling everybody to stay away.
I'm aware my bootloader is still locked and potentially with root I could screw my phone (and due to no unlocked bootloader could be in big trouble), but I'm quite happy being in that position.
If you fancy posting some usefull info rather than direct people elsewhere with vague answers then feel free , otherwise thankyou for your post but it hasnt helped so you might as well not have bothered.

Since L has not been released the correct answer to your question is, maybe. Does that make sense?

Towelroot doesn't work before the update. It wont work after the update. The guide in General (where all our guides are) that is not 3700 posts long explains why,
Or just try it yourself. The update is 100% irrelevant. It has not patched the exploit, but it is not the exploit that is the problem. Its SuperSU that is the problem, again - which is all explained in the guide, over in general
Right got the thread now. I've posted in there. Thanks

What is with forum culture that makes people against linking to other threads they are discussing.
Just post a ******* link to the thread so every other user that see's your post can easily find what you are talking about rather than searching high and low through the whole forum - i.e. 'over in general', do you mean Nexus 5 General, or XDA General? It's really not hard to just post a LINK. Once I found the 'guide in General' I could find no other info on towelroot - http://puu.sh/aHF5u/524526b849.png
Sorry to be rude, it just really grinds my gears - it's not hard to link something if you know where it is and saves everyone else loads of time.

Not to be rude, but rule number one is to search. You agreed to that when you signed up here.

Fair point.
However, it is widely accepted here that the search function of this site is mediocre at best. Just do everyone a favour and post a link rather than taking the moral high ground.

I may know where to find something but it takes me time to find the thread and copy the link. Why should I take my time to do that? I'm not the one who needs it. If the poster can't take his/her time to do that so be it.

We usually take a "give a man a fish, he can feed himself for a day. Give a man the means to fish and he can feed himself for a lifetime" approach.
I purposely do NOT give links for things that are sticky threads. If there is a sticky thread in General, "over in General" is a sufficient description to find the information required. If I give every idiot who asks a question a single link, he will not notice all the other glorious sticky threads that we here in this forum put much effort into answering as many questions as we possibly can without devoting our entire existance to repeating the same answers over and over... and over.
We take pride in our stick threads and once someone sees them, a wealth of knowledge unfolds. Knowledge we willingly pass on. If we simply give everyone a link, all we will be doing is linking the same person to different things all the time. We're being helpful without being detrimental to ourselves.

No, as I said I refuse to post links to obvious threads that sit where all the other obvious and important threads sit. Don't get all aggressive here.

Search is easy to use. Posting a link is as easy as going to general and typing "towelroot" into search. You're ressurecting an old thread. Towelroot is not a favoured solution, so it is no longer stickied.

If you're sorry to be rude, why are you being rude at all. Sorry is taking back something you didn't mean, yet edit does the same thing so you're not sorry at all. You have an attitude and you want to show it. Fine!

I don't accept that. I find everything I want in search, if I know the search term to use. Even in Tapatalk. Failing that, google can serch XDA very well too. This is just an excuse. The bigger picture is that the true favour is not posting a link. Heroin addict is in pain, needs a hit. Posting link is buying him the hit. Not posting the link, or better yet, sending him to rehab is the better favour.
You admit there is a high ground then?
For all those who say the search is mediocre - I find it perfectly fine and easy to use, 9/10 times I'll find what I'm looking for if I know it exists. Maybe you're just doing it wrong.
