i have done some research Aio Wireless (AKA att marger with cricket) Aio doesn't believe in Bootloader Unlock on there phones due to wanting to wifi tether or usb tether. Due to not able to unlock the bootloader or rooting the phone i have found a work around to be able to tether your moto g from aio wireless to your computer to be able to use it for internet. the work around is using PDANET. Pdanet (aka FoxFi) builds it self into the phone like root access but not full root access. You have to use the usb tether on the app to tether. You can get FoxFi on the google market. Purchase the licenses to be able to have full access to the app.
here are some steps to use foxfi
things needed. deleloper options enabled foxfi on android and pdanet installed on the computer (Mac or Windows)
1. download Foxfi from the google market on to the moto g
2. download pdanet from there website (Google pdanet) look for Version 4.15 click on it and download it) and install it on your computer (when installing install the moto drivers when it asks)
3. After installing both enable usb debug mode in the deleloper opions
4. Plug the phone into the computer and go to the foxfi app on the phone and enable usb tether (the drivers will enable and install on the first time used on the computer)
5. pda net will pop up on the computer saying its connecting to the phone
6. after everything done you should be able to use the usb tether on the phone via foxfi.
I will check to see if there another way to unlock the bootloader with some kinda of keygen program for the moto g from Aio Wireless. I will start a patation aio wireless to release bootloader unlocks to the moto g users.
congrats to Pdanet to making a work around. FoxFi works with other android phones. be sure to use a VPN on your phone when using tethering. look for free vpn on the app market.
Props man. This is good cause the limitation Aio wireless puts on their phone is really annoying. Also, it kills me I still havent been able to root this phone so any assistance would be most appreciated.

The work around I found still stands as the same. Aio wireless is a good company to have I think it beats everyone else for value. The best thing I could say is buying a phone off of ebay or localy that rooted unlocked and custom rom. I am using the first Samsung note 1 on aio wireless works great but I am sure aio hates it. I am still looking for a root way to be able to unlock the full pational. The Samsung galaxy express with aio wireless has the bootloader locked so you cant do tethering. best thing if you wanna use the galaxy express look for the att version on ebay that unlocked. the bootloader on that version remains to be unlocked so you install custom roms.

I just got the Nexus S 4G phone from Sprint, and already updated it to 2.3.5 due to the weak signal issue. I noticed that USB tethering is not working since the beginning (2.3.4). I went through Setting, Wireless & network setting, Tethering and portable hotspot, and USB tethering, then enble it. The computer showed that it was connected with the phone, just no internet connection. Could anyone help? Thanks a lot

1) is it the 2.3.5 problem only, or USB tethering is never working with Andriod? I am new to Android, and I didn't get the USB tethering working with 2.3.4 either.
2) I know if I root it, I will get the mobile hot spot working with 3G only. Will the root also give me the USB tethering?

As far as I know 2.3.4 worked and not sure on the second question as I don't use the native app for tethering. I do know however that pdanet works for usb tethering. When you root it comes with the one click root package to give you the correct drivers. I would try it for you but I am not on the stock rom.

If you unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery Peter Alfonso created a flashable zip the fixes native tethering in 2.3.5
I tested it with the wireless native app not the wired but should work for both

I remember there's a way to usb tether your phone without the need of rooting using proxydroid
I did this when my EVO was replaced with a new one that was unrootable at the time

My service is with Boost Mobile. I have been trying to root the Kyocera Hydro phone I have so I can turn on the wifi hotspot and tethering. I was told by a factory rep and Amazon that this phone can do that job. Boost Mobile says it can't. Boost Mobile says the only 2 phones that will do wifi hotspot and tethering on thair service is the Samsung Galaxy s2 and the HTC Veo. I can't afford ether one new. I was also told by a person online that has been pointing me to online articles about rooting phones. Starting with the fundamentals of rooting. That this phone can do the wifi hotspot and tethering if rooted. I have gotten real deep into my phone. though I am not shure it is rooted. I see a lot of files that look a lot like windows operation/system files. But I know enough not to do anything with them beyond looking. If i can't get this phone to do wifi hotspot and tethering. Then can someone please tell me what phone would be good for what I need, for what I can afford or trade for. I can give you the root method I rooted my hydro its a PAIN tho. And you cant change roms at all. But you may be able to teather and use it as a hotspot. But your internet will be crap it will be SOOOO SLOW but you can try. Let me know if you want the method youd have to inbox me for it im new so I cant post link.

I would also like to know how to tether... I've already rooted my kyocera hydro tho and only thing i'm having trouble with is finding a working app that will allow me to tether to my laptop. Right now i'm using my gfs galaxy s2 (t-mobile) and it works great for playing hearthstone. The only app i've found that works with the hydro is SVTP WIFI USB Tethering Lite. Bad thing is it only works for 2 days and then it wont work anymore. So i rooted my phone thinking that would work but it still doesn't and I would buy the Pro version but the app store wont allow me to since it says my provider (boost) doesn't allow it. If you could point me in the right direction as to how to tether I would really appreciate it.

The app is called "wifi tether for root user". Its on the play store but I can never find with store app. Do a google search it will show in the google play apps link. You will need to change device profile to "generic ics/jb wlan0". Best tethering app you can get.

I have the samsung galaxy victory 4g lte on virgin mobile and I want to use it to tether. I rooted it but no tether app I use is working for me. Does anyone have a working tether on this phone? If not, what are some generic tether apps/ways to get tether working?

Well, even though this thread has no replys, I will explain what I ended up doing with the Galaxy Victory:
I originally was trying to get mobile hotspot to work with Victory using whatever app I could. However nothing worked. I then just tried to use PdaNet+ (FoxFi) USB tether and that ended up working with a regular PC. Then I just used the computer (desktop) to broadcast the network using Virtual Router Plus.
So far this has been working, but hopefully I can eventually get the mobile hotspot working directly from the phone. Although I think this might require a new kernal which I have no experience in making/modifying.

Thanks for letting us know what you did. I have the sprint device, but have not tried any tethering apps. Also, the kernel already supports tethering but the stock tethering app and associated framework try to block tethering from another source. Thanks again and If you're interested in some mods check out AndroidForums. There are not a lot of users, but since Virgin, Sprint and US Cellular all sell this phone now hopefully more will join us. I am using the wifi tether app with the TrevE Mod, with all the settings everyone else seems to be using and I still can't get it to work on my Virgin Mobile Galaxy Victory. Anyone have any ideas or tricks i could use to get it to work?

I got a silly problem with my S3. i am using it in India currently and my Data package allows me to Tether. but since the S3 goes through verizon it wont let me tether. I was wondering if there is a work around for this or if there is any good tethering app that doesnt need Root or any software installed on the PC.

I am the new owner of a slightly used HTC One M8 on Verizon. Previous owner already OTA'd to Lollipop (thanks a lot) but I have not been using the phone long and have no problem doing a factory wipe if need be.
I have no interest, really, in custom ROMs or fancy features, except for exactly one: I NEED to use this phone as a wifi hotspot and I am not giving the crooks at Verizon $30/month for it (I am on unlimited data, hence buying a used phone instead of doing an upgrade).
I am something of an amateur at this, but I did successfully root, S-OFF, etc. my prior phone (HTC Thunderbolt) to work as a WiFi hotspot, so I know the basics.
What, exactly, do I need to have wifi tether? "Unlocked"? "Perma Root"? "S-OFF"? Recovery?
If you can get S-off you got the rest: unlocked bootloader, ability to flash a custom recovery and root. And you'll need all that to unlock the hotspot feature.
The bad news is, there is only Sunshine to achieve it, the LP version has not been released and from what I hear it won't work on the latest 5.0.1 VZW update.....
But there's always hope...

Isn't mobile hotspot part of stock? (Never have used tether but I believe thats when you use the computer's Internet connection for your phone to have Internet)
edit: tether would appear to use the Phone's Wifi via USB or bluetooth
