[Q] USB tethering with Nexus S 4G - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear all,
I just got the Nexus S 4G phone from Sprint, and already updated it to 2.3.5 due to the weak signal issue. I noticed that USB tethering is not working since the beginning (2.3.4). I went through Setting, Wireless & network setting, Tethering and portable hotspot, and USB tethering, then enble it. The computer showed that it was connected with the phone, just no internet connection. Could anyone help? Thanks a lot

The 2.3.5 update blocked free tethering.

Bigtoysrock,
Thank you very much for your help. I still have two questions.
1) is it the 2.3.5 problem only, or USB tethering is never working with Andriod? I am new to Android, and I didn't get the USB tethering working with 2.3.4 either.
2) I know if I root it, I will get the mobile hot spot working with 3G only. Will the root also give me the USB tethering?
Thanks a lot,

As far as I know 2.3.4 worked and not sure on the second question as I don't use the native app for tethering. I do know however that pdanet works for usb tethering. When you root it comes with the one click root package to give you the correct drivers. I would try it for you but I am not on the stock rom.

If you unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery Peter Alfonso created a flashable zip the fixes native tethering in 2.3.5
I tested it with the wireless native app not the wired but should work for both

Thank you, Bigtoysrock and Jackslim. I will root it with Peter's method. I will report whether it works with USB tethering. People reported that they have wireless tethering working. However, nobody talks about USB tething,

I remember there's a way to usb tether your phone without the need of rooting using proxydroid
I did this when my EVO was replaced with a new one that was unrootable at the time
You can find proxydroid in the market for a free app and use their wiki for details on getting your computer setup

Jackslim, thank you. That post has a straight-forward tutorial.

[Q] Wifi Router for G2

Hello All,
I saw that someone was able to pull the tmo tv app out of the new Mytouch ROM. Has anyone tried to get the hotspot app out of it too? If not, is there an app that can use your data servivce as a router? I already have PDA Net but i'm looking for something that doesn't require me to keep my G2 connected via usb cable.

search for Wired Tether for Root Users. I havent fully tested it but I think it works for G2 with Temp-Root (Visionary app)
edited: oops if you're looking for wireless tether, you can also use "Wireless Tether for Root Users".
There's also a thread in the G2 forums that explains how to use the built-in Froyo wireless tethering if you use a custom launcher.
thanks for the tips......i will check it out.

[Q] Rooted HTC Inspire 4G - Tether Issue

Hi, I hope someone can help me. I have been using the ClearDroid ROM v1.2.2 Stable with the Mod and its great. The only problem I have is the usb tethering will not work without using something like "Easy Tether lite". When I connect my Inspire 4G to my laptop and select the usb tethering option i get an error that i need to "contact AT&T to enable tethering on this device". My provider is Telstra (Australia) and prior to rooting the phone this worked ok. Is this how it should work since it has been rooted and flashed the Cleardroid rom?
I have also noticed that my Inspire has AT&T Hot Spots still running, but using ClearDroid AT&T bloatware should have been removed. Has something not worked or is this normal?

Without the AT&T hotspot app present on the device, I am not sure that users would gain access to the free AT&T wifi across the country, so I left that in there purposely. The purpose is to only add to the device's functionality, while not taking anything away that might be useful.
As for the tethering issue, you are using the stock tethering app. When AT&T updated the device to gingerbread, they locked it down hard. I am still working on how to unlock the stock app for that.
There is a second tethering app in the app drawer that has been there for many builds now, and it is guaranteed to work as it should. Use that one instead of the stock one and you will be just fine. Many users even report that they like it better to begin with. I hope this helps until I can get a real fix on the hotspot.

Sorry to revive an old thread. I was hoping there was an update on getting the stock tethering hotspot app working in Gingerbread. I've recently starting using an unlocked Inspire 4G on Ting (GSM/T-Mobile network), which allows tethering, but the stock app complains I need to call AT&T to enable tethering.
I was hoping there was a setting in the setting.db I could change, like I see described for other devices, and worked for my Nexus 5.

Enable ad hoc tether

Hello I was wondering this tablet can connect to ad hoc tethering yet? Is there a wpa supplicant file someone could point me to because I couldn't find anything while searching. Thank you.

Easy solution, to which no root is needed, is to install FoxFi on your phone. They removed it from marketplace. Just Google for the apk. Install it on your phone. Then install the add on that's in the marketplace. Works flawlessly for me. I had same issue where newer ICS and JB builds on my nexus 7 and note 10.1 wouldn't recognize the old wifi tether app, which used ad hoc tethering and needed root on phones. I've used Foxfi on my old Atrix phone and worked. Tablet picked it right up. Now I have my new Samsung Galaxy S3, which is completely stock. Installed foxfi on that also. Now I can tether my 4g LTE speeds to all my tablets with no issue. No root was needed on phone. App works great on stock phone. Its likely your phone is supported if its a decent/popular android phone.
I don't thinknthe supplicant file method will work on the note. I know I tried it on ly nexus 7 and didn't work. FoxFi solved everything
Supported stock no root.I use my tab more 10.1 connected to cell all the time.
Supported out of box

I think its more so, what particular app people are using to make the ad hoc tethering connection attempt. As people have been reporting not being able to connect. I know, on my older rooted atrix, the tablet wouldn't see the connection using the old tried and proven Wireless tethering app. FoxFi solved the issue for me. I think people that have paid hotspots feature on their phone can get it to work out the box(may be wrong). But alot of others, not just this tablet alone(prime, nexus 7, etc..) have had issues getting ad hoc tethering to work since newer builds of ICS. On prime, we used an alternate wifi supplicant file to get it to work. But later updates caused that to not even work anymore.

Funny you mention that. As I have the old unlimited data plan on VZW I had to spring for the additional hotspot charge to tether my S3. Worked great for a couple weeks then stopped. "Saw" the phone but couldn't lock on an IP. Before the last update. Both phone and tab were rooted stock at the time. Staff at VZW shop had no idea why. Figured I'd ask to not give any cause to jeopardize my plan. That said, FoxFi works great!
Weird.
confirmed working for me..
Foxfi running on papasmuffs CM9 HTC EVO build..
using 'Pdanet Tablet' on the Asus Transformer stock rooted .27
Thanks for the thread as was going nuts playing with the old tether program..

Only other thing I can think of is to try using the wireless tethering app. But instead of wifi, choose Bluetooth tethering in options. Its not as fast as wifi but still good for normal usage. Any connection is better than none I was using Bluetooth tethering for a while until I found solution.
Hello there,
I'm pulling this post back from the depth of the forum to ask if there is any news on this front... Foxfi is not working on my phone (motorola Defy), and neither is Wifi Tether. Bluetooth tethering (via PDAnet for example) works but is extremely slow...
Would you have a suggestion either for an android wifi tethering program that supports interface mode, or about a way to add support for ad-hoc wifi in the note 10.1 ?
Many thanks.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Victory Tether

I have the samsung galaxy victory 4g lte on virgin mobile and I want to use it to tether. I rooted it but no tether app I use is working for me. Does anyone have a working tether on this phone? If not, what are some generic tether apps/ways to get tether working?
Thanks
Well, even though this thread has no replys, I will explain what I ended up doing with the Galaxy Victory:
I originally was trying to get mobile hotspot to work with Victory using whatever app I could. However nothing worked. I then just tried to use PdaNet+ (FoxFi) USB tether and that ended up working with a regular PC. Then I just used the computer (desktop) to broadcast the network using Virtual Router Plus.
So far this has been working, but hopefully I can eventually get the mobile hotspot working directly from the phone. Although I think this might require a new kernal which I have no experience in making/modifying.
you can try easy tether.
Easy tether lite
Easy tether

Thanks for letting us know what you did. I have the sprint device, but have not tried any tethering apps. Also, the kernel already supports tethering but the stock tethering app and associated framework try to block tethering from another source. Thanks again and If you're interested in some mods check out AndroidForums. There are not a lot of users, but since Virgin, Sprint and US Cellular all sell this phone now hopefully more will join us. Thanks again.
Tether problems
I am using the wifi tether app with the TrevE Mod, with all the settings everyone else seems to be using and I still can't get it to work on my Virgin Mobile Galaxy Victory. Anyone have any ideas or tricks i could use to get it to work?
