Unrooted, locked RAZR Maxx HD. The only thing not entirely typical about my phone is that I'm in Germany at present, running it on a no -Verizon SIM. Since I updated, I seem to be getting restarts every day or two. Screen blacks out and the phone is unresponsive for a minute or two, then it fires up again. Doesn't quite act like a complete reboot, since I don't get the "Unlock PIN" screen that I do when I boot. But I get the message that the PIN is from an unknown source, and then it works fine. At first I thought that maybe the trouble was from Greenify, which I installed shortly after the update, but uninstalling it didn't help. Any thoughts?
Did you did a Factory Data Reset (FDR)? I know they are a pain since it wipes everything out, but it definitely cures a lot of ills after a major OTA like this one. I'm not saying it cures all issues, but it definitely cures a lot of issues like what you have described.

Yeah, I was afraid that would be the response. Not afraid in that I don't think it might be right; was just hoping for something easier. That's more than I can take on here; I'll be back in the States for a week next week and might have time for it then. So obviously the answer is no; I cleared the cache, but that's it.

Yeah, I know. A lot of people hate to hear it, but considering we went from JB to KitKat, that's a pretty big architectural jump. Usually, when things like this happen (GB to ICS, ICS to JB, and now JB to KK), it usually is best to wipe your phone clean and start over from scratch. Definitely resolves a lot of issues like this.
Now, the only other thing I can think of is your SIM card. Since it's non-Verizon, I don't know if that could be the issue. It could be the SIM is bad. You never know.
It will be interesting to see if a return to the states and using a Verizon SIM cures your ills? If so, then I definitely point it to the SIM card and then possibly, a FDR isn't needed.

Yes. It wipes all installed apps as well as settings, contacts, text messages, etc. It effectively resets the phone back to factory defaults (no Google accounts registered, all email accounts removed, contacts, text messages, etc).
Now, if you've modified it (removed system apps), it will NOT restore those. It can only reset/wipe settings as well as messages, emails, etc, installed apps.
Does Fatory Reset help anybody for constantly rebooting?

I'm getting this in the UK. It is apparently a problem with the Fast Dormancy Monitor on European GSM networks, after the 4.4.2 update
According to a Motorola forum, they are aware of the problem.
Unfortunately the only possible fix I have seen involves rooting the phone then editing the build props file to disable the fast dormancy monitor process
I guess a question many would have here is why arent you rooted and unlocked.......

Interesting. I came back to report that the problem cleared up once I was back in the U.S. I guess this explains why.

Well, I am now. The last time that I had checked, it hadn't been possible, and I hadn't followed the more recent surprise developments. Now that I've done it I don't plan to take advantage of it, since the phone works fine for me as it, but it's good to have the security for down the road. But thanks for alerting me to the possibility.

Hello everyone,
I upgraded my Atrix 2 (AT&T, no previous mods) to ICS the other day and it has been nothing but problems ever since. Anything I tried to open (dialer, apps, menu's) would take 30+ seconds, some would never open. The Play store download are crazy slow. For example I tried updating Youtube and after 15 minutes it was at 18%. People would call and I would try to answer, but it stopped ringing long before it would actually try to answer. I was getting random reboots. I decided to do a factory reset.
Although it would boot fine now, it was still really buggy and laggy. Most apps take a good 30 seconds to load. The menu's seem to respond fine and so does the dialer. The play store is the exact same, painfully slow. It doesn't matter if it is Wifi or 4g. Although the web browser is slow to load, web pages load relatively quickly. It does stop responding every minute or so and takes a good 15 seconds to continue.
I turned on "Show all ANR's" in the developer options. When it boots I get a barrage of non responding apps/services for the first 10 minutes, then it slows down. I still get random ones though. Homescreen quite often and "com.motorola.process.system" not responding. I turned on CPU usage in the developers options, but I'm not sure what the information means or what is acceptable/unacceptable. I compared the values/graphs to my wife's ICS tablet and hers are much lower. For example:
My Atrix 2: 5.72 / 6.28 / 6.76 (graph is 1/3 of the way across the screen, most of it is blue, graph jumps around)
Transformer Tablet: 0.0 / 0.06 / 0.06 (graph is almost non existant).
Motorola support told me that I cannot compare the graphs because the 2 ICS versions are different enough that the values could not be compared. Maybe, maybe not. All they offered was for me to send the phone in. I'm searching the web like crazy, but I think that the update is new enough where there isn't too much content on the subject yet.
Anyone have any ideas on what I can do/try? Any tips on how to troubleshoot the problem?
Thanks
Dustin

I tried several times (as mentioned) and although it was an improvement from the original update, it still performs terribly.
You said you hadn't done any mods. I assume you also did the official OTA update to ICS? In that case, I'd take the phone back to AT&T and ask for a replacement. If you're within the warranty period, they should honor it since you didn't do any mods/flashing.

Your assumption is correct, it was the official OTA upgrade. If there isn't really anything I can do, then I might just take it in. Motorola wanted me to send it in but I can't be without a phone for 1 week +. Hopefully I can work it out at the store so I don't have to send it in.
It could be a rogue app. Do a factory reset and clear the dalvik cache too.then do not sign in to your google. See what happens.

In the initial days after the ICS OTA I faced a lot less severity of similar issue raised by you which does not occur now by itself but sometimes very rarely.
As a last resort charge up fully, since you are ok with factory reset do it once more & then reboot and ensure you do not touch any of the default developer options. Don't use any apps explicitly from your end at all besides your core dialler and mobile data/wi-fi (which will of course bring up any background syncs & programs associated with background data). After an hour's use go to running apps and post screen shots (if need be after scrolling down for additionally non visible programs on visible screen) & similarly do the exercise for cached apps & maybe it'll help someone more knowledgeable to give some inputs as it'll show exactly what apps initialize & are active by themselves. Also before all this, screenshot "ANR's" since you have it enabled at the moment and finally I assume you are non rooted (just to know).

I went into the semi-local AT&T service store and they said that this is a known issue to them. They told me that they couldn't give me a new phone because all of their replacement Atrix 2's came in with ICS and they had to send them back. Supposedly there is a fix coming for it someday.
I will give your posts a shot here over the next few days and report back the results. Normally I'd do it tonight but it's also a business phone and I just need it to work for me until the weekend. Thanks for the help!
I failed to get screen shots of the running services. The only way I could see a way to do it was take pictures with a camera and what I had handy only took blurry pictures.
I have made some sort of progress though. I did as you guys said, wiped it and basically did nothing with it for more than an hour.
I connected to WIFI and checked the web browser, works pretty well.
I put in a clean flash card and loaded music, the player works fine.
I eventually added an my personal and work email accounts, they work fine.
Sync'd my contacts with AT&T, still working fine.
The dialer, text messageing, preloaded apps all work fine.
As soon as I launch the play store and sign into my google account, it all goes down hill. Everything gets super slow and most things I'm trying to do temporarily stop responding. I wiped it again, re-did everything last night except my google account and it's now working fine again.

Since you mentioned Signing into Google play is issue, I am just thinking it could be because of the backup & restore option. Bu default Google allows to back up and restore your account. Its highly like you selected that too. There could some app which causing this issue. May be you can give a try without checking restore option....may not help out but just a thought...
That's a good suggestion sazhagianambi. I'll try that sometime today.
I let my phone run all day yesterday without signing into my google account. When I finally went to sign in I saw that check box... right after I hit sign in. I unchecked it, but I had already hit the sign in button so I think it was too late.
For taking screenshot, you have to press power & volume down button simultaneously. It works for sure. Google Play store is definitely acting slow on ICS but does not effect rest of my apps. I have noticed this whenever I update apps updates (I have disabled auto updates for all apps though & check manually) Everyone echoes the fact that do not go beyond class 6 SD's which is one thing you may want to consider (I am however using class 10 which is said to be a ticking time bomb & also it is mentioned never to install apps to SD card (which I do) but stay away from "Link2SD" & do not move apps marked with grey icon when it says movable. Avoid live widgets if possible. In any case it is recommended to reboot once in two days like how we do our computers to flush the ram and renew the system.
If yet your concern is so grave (& which it sounds) then by all means you should consider getting a replacement from AT&T if you are under warranty.

I eventually admitted defeat and called for a replacement. Unfortunately it showed up late and had to leave for a business trip. So I'm sure it's sitting on my porch right now. Oh well.
I appreciate everyone's input. I'm curious if it shows up with ICS on it or not.
I am experiencing the exact same thing on mine. I also felt that the Google Play store was the issue... so much that I uninstalled it and re-installed the newest version from an apk off the web. I swear my phone ran smooth for a couple days. I was pumped. But then, the slowness returned. It's horrible. I just 'froze' the Play store with Titanium backup, and will see if that helps. If so, I'll report back.

I wonder if anyone has been having success with the update. I'd have to assume yes since it's still available for download.
I got home last night and my replacement phone has Gingerbread. I'm thinking about rooting it and backing it up then trying the update again.

Hi,
Did you say your local ATT retailer said there is a known "problem" with operating ICS on it...I have been soft bricked since the OTA update..I am not a programmer, and have been reading posts for weeks..overwhelmed. out of warranty, and moisture sensor positive, so I will get nothing from ATT, unless there is a recognized compatibility issue?
Anyway, If your retailer said so, maybe I can relay that to my local,
thanks,
Jason

It was our local AT&T service center (Portland, OR) that said it was a known issue (the guys at the retail store knew nothing). He knew exactly what I was talking about and said that he had gotten an email a couple of days before about the update. He also said that he would have swapped my phone out right then and there but he had to send all of their replacement phones back because they came with ICS.
I wasn't sure if he was serious or just yanking my chain. I find it pretty hard to believe that it would be such a wide spread issue and the update would still be available. They did replace my phone though. My replacement phone has been reminding me of it but I've been ignoring it.

ATT. They sent me a new one and I sent my old one back after it arrived.
So I couldn't take it anymore, I got the update bug. This time I got all my pics and contacts backed up, factory reset, then OTA and it works like a Swiss Watch. I feel much better being on ICS now.
I never had a random reboot on ICS now on JB I'm having it at least once a week...not a lot, I know but still something is not right. The last time this happened I tried looking further into it and the only thing I see that may be causing the issue is signal loss. I am 100% stock and have maybe 25 downloaded apps, if that. Is there an app for STOCK that will backup some of my data? I really don't think a factory reset will help but I'll give it a shot. Any other ideas? I freaking love this phone and this is my only complaint....would love to fix the problem. Thanks.
Here's a shot of the signal before the reboot.
Is it worth trying a factory reset? I feel the chances of it doing any good are very slim. Switch to a different modem?

Not sure what the right word is (hotboot?) but today my phone rebooted (not fully) while I was using it. No fc's or freeze ups, just the reboot. I'm currently on the no wipe leak which ended up being the official ota.... Since the no wipe was modified would it make any sense to install the full wipe version to see if the problem is resolved?

Flashed full wipe via Odin. In case anyone else has this problem I will post back with results in a week or so.

I'm having the same issue. It seems that something is causing JellyBean-enabled SGS3's to just jump into "interrupt heaven". It's always a quick boot, never resets the "Up time" counter, and only takes a few seconds to get back to normal, but it's a real pain in the arse!
Any ideas what the culprit is, guys? I'm running a newly replaced (ordered it on January 2nd and the first thing it does was download and upgrade to JellyBean "VRBLK3" before I could even start get it loaded, basically as soon as I activated the phone, it started to download the OTA before I could even get to anything else). I know in my case I have a couple of mods installed - maybe one or more of these is common amongst those of us having issues? I have the "4x5 scrolling" mod and the "BLK3 Logo fix" mod that removes the stupid VZW drum-beating and pulsating display on boot-up. Other than that, my phone is rooted (using method involving loading the older ICS bootchain so you can install the latest CWM recovery), has CWM Touch 6.0.2.3 and that's about it, other than your usual rooted toolkit programs. Anything common to the rest of you?
Oh, by the way - I've already tried reformatting the cache, blowing away the dalvik cache and even a complete factory reset, which seems to make it less jumpy, but it always comes back within a day or two if not just a few hours.
I had the same problem with mine rebooting when I had very bad signal. Last Friday I did a factory reset then Odin to 4.0.4 and let the phone update to 4.1.1 and the problem seems to have gone away. I am not willing to call it cured yet, but it hasn't rebooted since. This went from where I was rebooting constantly all day long at work and when on the road in bad signal areas.
So far so good.
By the way, I looked EVERYWHERE and couldn't find anyone complaining of this earlier so I figured it had to be a bad download of the update.
It's something in Jelly Bean update itself. I tried booting my phone in "Safe Mode" - which only loads factory programs, and it still happens. I sure wish I could put a finger on anything in the way of a pattern, but - so far there's nothing I can single out that seems to make any difference. I'll do the system/factory reset and re-install everything one more time just to see if it helps.
Weird...

Well, something in a factory reset helps, but it doesn't last. First, just to be thorough, I used "ROM Manager" to 'fix permissions', then I did a complete flush of the system, removed the micro-SDXC card, did a format of the cache partition, flushed the Dalvik cache, then did a factory reset and reinstalled everything. I seemed to help for a while, but eventually it started to reboot randomly - sometimes when it was just sitting idle not even being used at all.
That indicates to me there's something funky in the JB (VRBLK3) firmware, especially since I was seeing reboots even while I was booted in safe mode, where nothing loads except factory-installed programs.
Fortunately, it never reboots while it's in recovery or download mode... :silly:
Ah, I forgot to note: this is the second phone that acts exactly the same way with the VRBLK3 (Jelly Bean) ROM update. Symptoms of the problem are identical, down to the spontaneous combustion that started this thread. Mine's not "in pocket" as per the OP, but - I don't think that has anything to do with it.

You could also try getting a new sim from Verizon to see if that helps with connectivity to towers. You've already Odin flashed stock images and wiped pretty much everything significant at that.

Well, unfortunately I've done that - twice in the past ten days, the latest one came Tuesday afternoon. No change, still just reboots while I'm not even using the phone, and it's not the phone, it's the software. I can't say for absolute certain that it is in the VRBLK3 / JB code, but I can say for sure it _is_ something I am running, but the fact that it does reboot in safe mode indicates it's not anything downloaded or added to the base system as shipped.

Heheh... Well, I got one on "day 1" by pre-ordering it from Verizon, after two months the power button fell off. They sent me a "CLN" one, it lasted ten days and started randomly rebooting (even if reloaded with 'virgin' unrooted OS), the third (another "CLN") was delivered with no power button and the volume rocker fell off while I was taking it out of the box. At that point, I got kind of pizzed and did the 'good customer for 10 years' and elevated it through three levels until I finally got them to ship me a brand new one. That one lasted two months until my wife left it on top of my car and I backed over it in my driveway. I used my Asurion (insurance) to get #5, which arrived rebooting from the moment I started it up. Within a few days after monkeying around with their tech support (they ain't the brightest bulbs - instructions include "remove the battery and dial yourself and hit the 'Send' key three times" - not kidding) I managed to get #6 shipped out, and it's first act of life was to suck down the VRBL3 (Jellybean) software update and I've mucked around with it for two weeks, tried loading it with various combinations of "No Wipe" and "Factory Reset" versions of VRBLK3, removed a bunch of programs I've had installed but never really used and it still just vibrates about once an hour (and it's totally random, sometimes lasts 6 hours, sometimes 6 minutes before rebooting), jumps to the "warm/quick start" and recycles without resetting the "time up" counter. I'm thinking it's something I fed it (i.e. a nasty program or interaction between programs) - but I've come up empty-handed so far as running it to ground.
Does anyone have any knowledge of known interactions or "bad programs" that just don't play well together under JB?

Well, normally - I would agree. But this makes three phones that act exactly the same in a row. The first of which was my 2nd "New" GS3, updated OTA to Jellybean - which immediately started the rolling reboots. The problem with the "CLN" phones are that they were all defective in one way or another, or they wouldn't be recertified. I don't really think VZW does a good job recertifying these phones, there are just too many of them coming out every single day, and - lord knows Asurion probably is behind that curve. :silly:
All three phones have been identical in their behavior - "down to the letter" since VRBLK3 was released. :fingers-crossed:
Question: now that I've used my insurance, do I _have_ to go back to Asurion for replacement, or since I'm still in my first year, will VerizonWireless entertain sending me another? It seems like reading the information that comes with the Asurion phones, they are the ones that are now guaranteeing my phone for a full year from the time it was sent (that would be this past Monday).
The phone has an Asurion sticker inside it, not a VZW one...
And the winner is: battery replacement. Every single VZW marked battery causes it to reboot, but a plain old Samsung battery (made in Korea - I've noticed almost all the VZW branded SKUs are made in China) works 100% and gives me an average of 12 hours moderate usage. The batteries I had from previous phones, VZW and Asurion all have the Verizon markings on them, and every single one of them causes it to reboot. This new one I got today straight from Samsung does not.
Curious, huh? I have one out of five batteries with VZW markings, and it does the same as the other four "made in China" ones. You've gotta wonder...
Glad you found a fix. Is it possible the new battery is slightly larger? Wondering if the old batteries were maybe a bit loose.

I've never had any major problems with my Infuse since I got it.
The battery is getting weaker but I bought a 2600Mah USB Backup Battery and that gives me another 7-8 hours for about 13-14 hours of use.
To make a long story short, I unlocked for use in Mexico City on TelCel and had some issues, so I returned the phone back to stock, unrooted.
Since that point however, while it would occasionally freeze before, its become a daily thing now and really bothersome because I can't even stop audio from playing via bluetooth. The touch screen becomes unresponsive and only a soft reboot or a hard reboot (removing the battery) returns the phone to a useful state.
It seems I have to do is every couple of hours now though, so I am posting here to get some suggestion on how to fix it.
Its been two years already since I got it so I am eligible for a new phone, but this one continues to work well besides this issue.
Thanks

1. your microSD may be going bad
2. if you haven't done so, back up all your stuff and try a factory reset...this may erase all existing info and bring the phone back to day#1

I mentioned that in the post, I did it while in Mexico City. It worked fine until this week, late last week. The battery only gives me about 5 hours now with just 32% audio playback and about 10% web access.
I guess I'll order a Anker battery from Amazon.
I rooted the phone again last night but before I did that, the phone became unresponsive three times in an hour. Which microSD card are you talking about? I just bought a 32GB Class 6 card and that works fine, I play all my audio from it, no problems.
If you mean the internal microSD card, that could be possible. I assume I can crack open the phone and replace this easily?
I should mention it never does that while plugged into a power source, so maybe this is all battery related.
Possible Fix...
When I had to hard reboot the phone again this afternoon, a little forced closed window came up for TwLauncher.
After rebooting the phone I looking at Titanium Backup and cleared the cashe from TwLauncher and that seems to have solved the problem.
Somebody on here mentioned that after installing a ROM they had the same problem, was worth a try.
I will report back if the issue returns.

My personal beliefs are that TB is good for causing a lot of problems.I used to use it,even bought pro,but even not restoring data when restoring apps I seamed to develop odd quirks or problems on about any ROM. Since not using it have much fewer problems.I am sure many people love it and think it's great, just thought I would give my $0.02
if your battery holds a charge...that is, it's letting you run the phone for more than several hours, it's unlikely to be the battery.
lags are usually due to apps misbehaving, media scan, wakelocks and wifi bugs...there are some others.
a factory reset ...complete reset..complete stock..will let you know if you have hardware of software issues.

Thus far, that issue has not returned. Yes the battery holds a charge, but last only about 5-6 hours now, not 7-8 hours.
It seems it was a minor software issue. I did a factory reset, you keep missing that.
I did it in Mexico City (7 days ago).... Since that point and returning to the US, I have put my apps back on the phone. I had already updated to Gingerbread and it just reset to that.
I won't know more until I am out and about with my phone. I will be watching various auto racing events and don't plan on leaving the house this weekend.

No problem, I've never had a problem with TB. I updated the rom to a rooted version of the AT&T Gingerbread release so I could even use it... lol
The phone was rooted for Froyo, I downloaded the AT&T Gingerbread from Samsung via Kies when it was released and it remained rooted.
But resetting it back to stock, TB didn't work until I put the rooted rom on the phone.

Exactly...you had to use TB or another restore. If you used TB on froyo and restored on GB or vice versa, you may run into issues.
and ...sigh... I did not miss the fact that you stated that you had reset the phone. I just had doubts that you understood what I was trying to say...from inside the phone..under settings/privacy..there is a reset option. make sure everything you wanted is already backed up. reset it..then put it into download mode and use one of the odin or heimdall package and flash it back to complete stock...run it stock and dont back up anything. download only apps from the play store or side load the apps if you had the apk's.
check the battery use to see if you have wake locks or android OS or android system eating up for battery..then you will know

Well like this, I will not go into the details but somebody else put Swipe Lock on the phone and of course I didn't know what he put into the phone. I was trying to resolve data issue on TelCel.
I had to do a hard reset outside of the operating system. Since the ROM was already upgraded to Gingerbread but unrooted, it went back to its unrooted state meaning I couldn't use TB.
So I re-downloaded apps from my memory. All of them are free so it wasn't an issue, just time consuming.

See above.
I used download mode to get out of Swipe Lock. I never used Swipe Lock, a-hole wanted to charge me 120 pesos ($7) to wipe it and put it back to stock, I wasn't going to do it, I know enough about Android phones to do it myself.
Oh well, lesson learned, I believe wiping the cashe from TwLauncher has solved the problem.
I did re-install all the apps from the store. I wasn't able to use TB until Thurs night (5/16). I noticed the errors Friday afternoon, wipe the cashe and no issues since.
So since about 2 days ago the phone just start freezing. Sometimes it just restarted randomly, but mainly freezing at least every 5 minutes. The power button alone wouldn't turn it off no matter how long I held it. Always have to use Pwr+Vol Down to reboot.
I put up with it because I've been busy, but finally tried wiping cache - no profit. Tried safe mode - no profit. Factory reset- negative profit. After the reset it just seems to restart a bit more often but in general it freezes less, making the timing seem even more random.
This happened when I first got it (used). It was restarting due to the fresh 7.0 update. So a factory reset fixed it and it was smooth sailing for like 3 months or something. I know there was a minor system update a few days ago but those dont usually call for a factory reset. I tried it anyway and it just didnt work. I had actually even tried uninstalling all the app updates from the night before it started happening. but safe mode couldn't even fix the problem so I guess that was moot.

Mainly I'd like to know if Im alone. A fix would be great but I'm hoping it's not specific to my device. If it's a hardware issue I'm gonna give it a swift toss down the stairs and maybe deliver a nasty curb stomp to it right afterward.
Any advice?
I'm running into the same exact issue. Same build, and am running out of ideas.

Good to know its not just me. Did it start after a recent update for you also? That would give me hope that its not faulty hardware. Maybe just a bad update.

Yes, it started right after I got a small update. I'm hoping a fix will come. (I'm on verizon).

Same for Verizon. I guess I'll just hold out, using a backup phone, until a new update hopefully fixes it.

Gonna go ahead and revive this. It seems to work fine when the sim card is out. I recommend you see if it's the same with you. I've charged it up before work multiple times before work days and come home from to see that it never restarted. I was able to test this using the fingerprint feature; it isn't asking me to use pattern like it does after boot.
No one else is chiming in but, since we're both on Verizon, I'm having a feeling that it's directly related to the SIM/carrier.
I just updated to Oreo via OTA and the phone worked great for a day. After that, I couldn't make calls and people couldn't call me. My phone would randomly reboot or get stuck on the G logo.
I wiped and reinstalled Oreo, and now the same thing is happening. Plus I see this weird 'colourful static' after trying to make a call, before my phone just shuts off. I tried safe mode and the same thing happens.
Currently in an urgent situation where I need my phone to be functioning, hoping someone here can help.
Thanks
I am having exactly the same issues since the Oreo OTA. If I reboot the phone, the issues go away for a while, but eventually it's back to problems where I'm unable to make/receive calls, screen is flickering (even that colored static you mentioned), lag when unlocking the phone, etc.
Have you found out anything?

I have no such problems. I am running stock. It is running really smooth. I also have september security update. Unfortunately, only thing I can suggest is factory reset.

I am also running stock, never rooted, never unlocked the bootlader, also running the september security update. I have factory reset, and I have even run into the issues while using the phone in Safe Mode. There are a number of people with similar issues leaving feedback on Google's issue tracker, but I was hoping to find someone who maybe has found a solution.

I am sorry to hear that man! I hope you/google figures it out.... may be try flashing the factory image manually.
I'm having the same issues and verizon Chat support told me they are having issues with the OS upgrade and the Pixel. Did the factory reset and everything else. Replacement phone coming now. If it's the Oreo OS, I bet it's going to have the same problem... This is a major problem, as I am a single Dad and have a long drive to get my daughter - do they really want me to text while I drive instead of calling?? This is Day 5 of this issue and 4 trips to their stores.... ugh. Suggestions?
Update
Just wanted to post an update. After factory resetting a few times the problem persisted. I sent it back to my wireless carrier and they sent it to Google. In the meantime I had a loaner phone from my carrier. Google sent back a refirb (it was practically new with new screen and camera), and the issue hasn't come back in the new phone. My suggestion is to send back to your carrier to get a replacement. Good luck!
i am on stock too (from google store), oreo update and have exactly the same problem, it also occurs with "ok google".
after reboot, calls and "Ok google" work perfect so the mic is okay. but sooon after it just stops working and i got randoom reboots.
same is happening in "safe mode"
i did factory reset via android and id did not help.
now i tried a factory reset via boot menu and will check it out.
