[Q] Inactive YouTube drains a lot of battery - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So of course I know YouTube uses a lot of battery when watching some video's, which I do a lot. This, however, isn't the problem I'm experiencing.
So lets say my phone is 100% charged and still on its charger, and I start watching a video or two. Then I close the app (still in multitask bar) and take it off the charger. I use my phone a bit, put it in my pocket and just forget about it. After a few minutes/hours battery has dropped almost 10% (depends on time). Checking battery stats shows YouTube using most of the battery, more than screen and other processes.
Here's a screenshot of today. Just normal battery usage, then i watched two 4 minute videos over WiFi, closed YouTube and put it away. Got about 10% drop in the following 30 minutes.

Clearing the YouTube app from recents does get rid of the problem, but it seems that this is something unusual, and I hoped someone had a more permanent solution.
My device is running on stock rom with Franco kernel v50 (Vomer settings), although I've had this problem with earlier versions of Franco kernel with other settings. Furthermore I'm using Xposed with App Settings, AppOpsXposed, Gravitybox and Unicon. Using custom DPI for whole system and certain apps (using App Settings). If I forgot some crucial information I'll hear it.
I hope someone can help.

Reboot the device and see if the problem continues. It probably just got hung up the one time.

from your screenshots, youtube doesnt look like your problem. it only used 18% of your battery thats already used, and only kept your phone awake for 2 and a half minutes. when you close an app in your app via the multitask bar, you arent actually closing the app(its the same as just backing out of the app). but google play services is taking much more battery than it should.

Greenify.

I had the same issue, but only happens sometimes. If you check FKU - CPU usage you'll notice sometimes it will be on four cores and as soon as you close it from recents it will revert back to two cores. Also happens on Instagram if im using it for a long time.

Rebooting won't fix anything, been having this problem for months now, just always cleared recents to avoid the drain. Plus its a consistent problem, i can predict it draining battery when i leave it open, and it stops draining when I remove it from recents. That's why I'm confused. I will try Greenify, and thanks for the tips everyone.
Still, I find it strange that, even though you say the drain can't be from YouTube, it's always YouTube causing the problem in the first place. And the thing about Google Play Services, mostly it's this high in the list. It reports 7m52s CPU and 43m11s Keep Awake right now (1hr after OP). Is this not good? What can I do to fix that?

[Q] Faulty battery readings - B5330

I'm experiencing some weird battery issues on my Samsung B5330 (Galaxy Chat). Since there is no GC forum and it's probably a software issue I'll wirte here.
The phone is full stock, no root nor any modifications were made, 4.1.2.
At the beginning of my adventure with this phone I experienced a problem with Media process eating the battery. That was probably caused by one of videos, faulty mp3 file or Gallery system application. Once or twice a day 46% of battery was eaten as shown in battery stats. However from time to time the phone just died and battery stats had just a blank space from the last reading The phone got hot because of CPU usage. As it also happened at night and affected an alarm clock and had to be dealt with.
I turned off Gallery, Media and Media history services (in App properities) and replaced them with independent applications. First problem was solved and the second one become clearly visible.
It looks like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
There is nothing indicating extensive battery use:
The battery reading goes from 80% to 0% in 80 seconds and the phone dies. Nothing overheats, nothing hangs. After 1 - 2 days if 60% is shown and I restart it, it goes to 0% instantly.
It's either faulty battery or software bug :/
Any ideas what can I do with it apart from buying a new battery?
battery problem
This looks like a hardware problem (with the battery), my apenion is that it coudn't be a problem with some faulthy mp3, music or video player or so, it could be a problem with your background working apps / make sure you clear all of them and make sure you turn off all wify, 3g, edge and so in your phone settings, and see how much time it works then.
The com.android.media process as a source of the first problem is confirmed, as it is widely described on the net and it was noted in battery stats.
The problem is what is shown on the photo. I'll just buy a new battery since it's not expansive. I thought it may be a software problem as it looked like the indicator was not properly calibrated or refreshed.
The longest the phone was alive after solving the Media problem was over 3 days with everything on. It went down to 20% and then died.
This also suggests the battery...
OK, problem solved. Good ole' wipe did the trick.
The problem was purely of software origin as voltage of charged battery was marked as 100% but voltage of an empty battery was marked as 50%. So it reached 50% and died. After the wipe it goes down normally to 0%.

Battery drain from a non-running app?

Hi. Its been a few days since my Nexus 5 battery has been drained pretty fast. Lasts only about 4 hours after fully charged with little use. Since I recently started working in a really poor reception area I figured that was the problem, my phone constantly trying to find a signal, but when I go to the details, I see that Instagram is responsible for using up 40% and it wasnt even running!
Im no developer, or even experiencied android user, but, how is this possible?

Welcome to android and app permissions. It's accessing a number of things on your phone with location probably being the number one. Get something like xposed and app ops to tame what the app is allowed to access. You should also get gsam or BBS to get a closer look at what is using your batery.
This happened to me last night with a messaging app I used to replace hangouts. It dropped about 12% overnight with data and WiFi all off.
I looked in battery use and messaging sucked most if it up. I cleared data in the messaging app and that fixed it. Later today I switched back to hangouts until I download another messaging app. I don't trust that one now.

Thanks for your reply. I'm guessing I need root for Xposed and those other apps ? Like I said I'm just an ex iPhone user who just converted to Android. So haven't given myself the time to tweak around.

you dont need xposed. looks like instagram had a stuck process or was stuck syncing. a reboot usually fixes that. there are other ways to fix things, other than installing xposed(as xposed could bring in its own issues). there are many apps out there that help, greenify being one of them. also, there are a few great apps to help you stop wakelocks that are out of control.

[SOLVED] What is eating my battery on Nexus 5?

Let me get straight to the point.
Nexus 5 Lollipop 5.0.2, with xTrasmooth ROM with no problems with battery whatsoever... but suddenly I get around 16% drained overnight when I would get much less before.
After a clean install, the only thing I did was install alpha xPosed with a few modules (Xgels, Gravity, Youtube adaway, Youtube background enabler).
Can anyone tell me how to show logs or look for wakelocks and things like that to show battery stats?
All I have is this:

Use Gsam battery monitor, it will tell you your wakelocks
You could have been in a dead zone or something and as a result, your phone kept trying to search for the signal. It also helps if you turn down your brightness

The op is talking about 16 percent drain overnight. I dont think turning down his brightness will help him. Like the other poster said, use either bbs, or wakelock detector to determine wakelocks. As jarshdude said bad cell signal could be the culprit. For this I use the smart radio function on cataclysm, to change to 3g when on wifi. As my lte service is spotty at best in my house. But im guessing its a rogue app causing wakelocks.
See posts 1 to 4 in the battery help thread in my signature. And if you still need help, post the recommended screen shots there. ?
I used to have this issue as well. Mostly the main culprits are Google apps and social networking apps doing syncs, disable Google syncs for services you don't need/use and if there are social networking apps that you would like it to sync, perhaps increase the sync refresh interval.
Is it not xposed as it's still in testing?

I should've read these threads before, sorry guys.
Anyways, I think xposed alpha for lollipop was the culprit, but it got resolved after a few restarts wiping cache and dalvik, or so I think, because that's all I did. Now I only drain 3 to 4 % overnight, which is pretty good for me, since that's what I was draining on stock before.

Help with Battery life

I recently got one of this phones off ebay deal. So far the phone has been really good (after going to 5.1.1) other than the battery life which is super terrible. I leave for office at 8AM and by the time I am back around 6:30 in evening its already down to 8-9% with barely 1 hour of SOT. While using the phone I can clearly see battery going down by 1 percent every two minutes.
One of the other things I noticed is it takes a while to charge battery. Almost takes 4 hours to charge it.
Have done everything listed in various thread on XDA to fix battery drain but nothing is helping. To summarize I have
- Rooted my phone
- Disable AT&T enhanced 4G LTE
- Tweak setting with kernel auditor
- Disable ATT bloatware
- Install greenify and amplify
- Installed CF.Lumen to control brightness
Not sure what I am missing here now. Any help is appreciated from you guys.
Does the phone feel warm on the back when it's just sitting?
If so, you probably have a runaway app. You can check the battery section in options and see what's eating battery.
I had this a while ago on nexus 5 with the ebay app, the same also happened to a friend of mine with the same app.
hello, there.
i had the same problem, it seems that your phone is not going to deep sleep mode.
i fixed my problem with Nitro X, you can find it here on xda.
now i am very happy with my battery, for example now it says on battery for 2 days 15h 29min 22s and still 60% battery remaining.
hope this helps.

It only gets warm when playing some games. I will look at some of the apps as you suggested. Thanks,

Thanks. I am gonna give it a shot. I see they have 2 versions - X86 and Non-X86. which one should I flash? Also since flex 2 doesn't support any recovery (twrp etc) should I just flash it with Flashfire app?
hello kunalmalviya,
i downloaded the non x86 (=the arm version).
i do not know about flashfire, you should ask on the forum.
Please click the thanks! button if that helped.
PEACE.
Try reflashing latest software via LG Flash Tool.
I have no issue with battery life. It is slightly better than on LG G2 which is awesome. (3-4 hours SOT without any problems, no tweaks, no root, brigthness on 100%, Wi-Fi, NFC and LTE enabled all the time, Google Now enabled, Google Location Services enabled and lot of apps running in background).

General Chrome browser drains battery, even when deactivated

Hello everyone,
on my rather new ROG Phone 5 I recently noticed that the Chrome browser is draining a lot of battery. I switched all background usage off, but it kept draining the battery, even when not in use at all.
I tried everything, cleared cache, forced to stop it and even deactivate the app, but it still drains the battery.
Now I reset the whole to factory settings, did take quite a while to setup everything again. It all was good for a week now, but now it starts doing this sh*t again.
Does anyone else have similar problems? What might be the issue and how can I resolve it? I don't want to spend a whole day setting up my apps again...
Hey there,
I am using the BETA version of the Chrome and have no issues. Give that a try and see if it is better.
Thanks for the reply. What version do you use? And did you have similar problems before?
Have you tried putting your phone in power saving mode? That usually limits the background processes and hopefully will stop Chrome from working in the background and draining your battery.
I will try that and enable it now even with 80% battery left. But when I first had the problem, I had the phone switch to powersaving mode automatically at 20% battery, but that did not reduce the drain from Chrome though.
But thanks for the hint, will try it again now and take a look if it helps.
I stopped using Chrome a few months ago that was one of the reasons I use Opera browser now a lot faster a lot smoother and it blocks all the ads but some people do need Google Chrome though
I would like to use any other browser, but no matter what I do, Chrome keeps draining the battery, even when all cache is cleared, it was forced to stop and it was deactivated! So even if I use e.g. Opera, the Chrome browser will continue to eat up my battery!
I now tried the Chrome beta, but that is even worse! 5,7% in just 4 minutes of usage!
I think I now found a solution, I did this:
I cleared all data and cache from Chrome.
I forced to quit it.
I disabled it.
(up to this point it was what I did before, too)
I went to the PlayStore and chose "uninstall" (so it gets reverted back to "factory" version, but not completely uninstalled)
Then I installed Opera GX AND I've chosen Opera to be the default browser.
I charged to 100% again and after now 30 minutes of using the phone, it isn't showing up again in the list and battery usage is waaay reduced!

The more you strip Google from any device the better it gets. It's a universal law
Even with GAPPS working normally I bet all the data stealing, location tracking, telemetry, and god knows what else malware like Google Play Services do to you in the background hit the battery by quite a bit..
Haha, true!
But that Chrome is something different, looks like a major issue, I read reports about many other devices having the same issues...
For me, the same chrome eats up the batteries
