[Q] X Tether with rooted Verizon Moto G? - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

dymmeh said:
After reading about the Xposed framework I decided to write a module to bypass the validation checks for wifi tethering / mobile hotspot.
This method will allow you to bypass the validation without having to worry about moving around APKs, backing them up, setting permissions, etc. It also will no longer contact the actual servers used to verify if you have permission to use the tether.
This Xposed module works by replacing the list of entitlement apps available in the string array "config_mobile_hotspot_provision_app" with an empty set. This means that the entitlement app is not run at all and defaults to the native tether immediately.
Works with VZW, AT&T, Sprint, DE and non-DE devices running 4.4 or 4.4.2.
Installing
Be rooted and have the Xposed framework installed
Search for and download "X Tether" under the download section of the Xposed installer
Activate the module in Xposed.
Reboot.
Tether away!
SPRINT ONLY: Change the line ro.mot.tether_dun_required=1 in your build.prop file to ro.mot.tether_dun_required=0

This guy made this for the Moto X, however people on rooted Moto G's have this working on their devices.
I just recently purchased an unlock code and rooted my Verizon Moto G (Yes, you read that right, Verizon) and installed this tweak.
The Verizon Moto G doesn't even have the menu options for tethering, however it did make this app work. (It used to say that my plan doesn't have tethering and whatnot)
When enabled, my phone does broadcast and other devices can connect, but it seems as if DHCP isn't getting enabled because no device can get an IP lease.
So close, yet so far.
Anyone here knowledgable enough to get this working right?

Few things:
Can you link to who or how you got the unlock token (seen it before but it ended for the one source)
Supposedly the kernel has been modified to kill tethering at the core or something. Some tether apps that require root, can fix this by putting in what was removed.
Also, you can use pdanet+ to use bt to share your internet. It requires pda tablet on the other device and you probably can't share more than one device at a time but at least it doesn't require root or any major workarounds.

[Q] Unregister Devices After WiFi Tether Hack?

I have distant plans to make a non-commercial app for our company phones but I signed up for a dev account primarily to run other people's code. Specifically I wanted to interop-unlock and setup wifi tethering on a few Focuses since I'm sick of waiting for AT&T. We pay for tethering on our lines and a few guys have been using the corded trick from shortly after launch but its clunky.
Anyway, I've unlocked two phones and setup proper tethering and its great. My question is can I unregister those phones and still have tethering working since its been enabled in the OS instead of being an app? Further, I would like to roll out tethering to all of our phones by unlocking, enabling it, and unregistering the phone immediately after. Would there any problems with this plan? Thanks in advance.
Your plan should work. The registration (dev-unlock) is required in order to install the apps that do the provisioning for Internet sharing. Once provisionined, though, it doesn't matter anymore. If you can safely delete the app and the feature keeps working, then you can almost certainly safely de-register the phones and it will keep working.
Just an FYI, this appears to work just fine. I unregistered one of the phones and it can still be used for wifi tethering. I'll update this thread if I learn otherwise as I roll out wifi tethering to all of the Focuses on our account.
So I ran into a bit of a snag... After unlocking and re-locking my 3rd phone I went back to my personal phone to unlock it again because I found some other homebrew things I wanted to try (specifically Advanced Config 1.4)... Unfortunately I'm getting the dreaded 0x64 error when I try to do so. I thought about trying to unlock a virgin phone first but it sounds like the only way I can unlock mine again at this point is to do a full reset on it - but I don't want to do that without making sure that the 3 phone limit isn't the problem (current my app hub shows NO registered devices).
Shouldn't I be able to unlock the same phone again? I didn't click any of the "prevent re-lock" options in the tools I used for the Interop unlock or the tethering setup...

[Q] Non Rooted Verizon Galaxy Nexus wifi tether question

Was just wondering if anyone knew what if any repercussions there would be using the Wifi Hotspot and USB tether app from SVTP (from the Android Market) on a non-rooted Verizon GN. The app works great and was quick to setup but I am interested to know if I will be automatically popped into a Mobile Hotspot plan (which I do not have now) if I use it.
That being said would it make more sense to root my phone to circumvent these potential charges?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
Verizon has recently adopted new changes in how it monitors for tethering and when unauthorized tethering is detected it redirects you to a verizon web page on how to order a tethering package. I have heard PDA net still works, you might want to check out Koush's tether app, reported to be undetectable.
I say either way root your phone, then load a custom rom many of them have work arounds for wifi tethering

[Q] Tethering XT925 4.1.2 Verizon

I have read through all the different methods of tethering, and it appears that I am still unable to utilize my tethering. I can connect, but once connected, I can't access the internet or ping Google, or even ping the gateway for that matter!! I am rooted on the latest update for this phone.
I have:
1. Used SQLLite Editor and modified the key to stop the tether check (this actually allowed my PC to connect).
2. Tried the built in tether.
3. Tried Wifi Tether (Play version).
3. Tried FoxFi.
4. Used ISWAT Tether Unlocker.
5. Used SQLLite Editor to change the key to subscription_mode = 1 (and changed it back after failure)
I've noticed on multiple threads that people have been successful just trying one of these methods, but I have been unsuccessful on all of them. Am I missing a step? I'd think the community would be all over this like white on rice, but so far, I've seen little complaints?
I'd rather not unlock the bootloader and install a custom ROM, as I'm actually satisfied with stock and my own tweaks.
If you are rooted WifiTether works.
You need to fgo into settings and change the "Device Profile" to "Generic ICS/JB(wlan0)"
I'm using the version from Google Downloads or whatever it is.

I am such a toolbox. After messing with this thing so much, I had switched to NETD-NDC for the connection. After I fixed that (changed that to auto), I was able to get it to go through.
Stock tether still doesn't work (same issue), but I couldn't care less. Speed tests show that throughput is the same on the PC as on the phone, so I'd call that a win.
Geeze... You'd think after working on this thing for hours, I would have caught that.
I have a quick question perhaps under same topic:
I recently dl'd SQLlite and performed the entitlement hack to get my WiFi tether to work. This method worked great however afterwards, I am unable to access either GPlay or my RSS reader (Feedly).
I am running Orbot and Transparent Proxying. Before the entitlement hack, I could access all of my apps with Orbot enabled.
Now I have to disconnect from the Tor Network to connect to GPlay.
RAZR rooted, blunlocked...

Seems like there is a new version of WiFiTether available on both googledownloads and play store, however, the Device Profile" to "Generic ICS/JB(wlan0)" setting no longer works, Mobile Hotspot works with the SQlite hack. Is the device profile supposed to be something different now?

[Q] AT&T LG G2 Tethering Help

Hello,
I just purchased a AT&T LG G2 and None of the WiFi or USB Tethering Apps that I have tried from the Google Play store work on the phone.
Is this a problem with this AT&T LG G2 phone or is there a way to get tethering to work. I am not technically inclined, just a phone user.
I would gladly pay someone to help me get WiFi or USB tethering to work on my phone.
In OC, CA
Have you rooted your device yet? If not, then I don't know of any way to get it working.
If you are rooted, I was able to change a sql database value to unlock tethering (as I am unlocked on T-Mobile on a D800).

Hey Casey, I have the same device, looking to unlock tethering on T-Mobile as well, can you explain what you did?

OP-
If you haven't rooted or done anything to the phone then take it to the ATT store and have them look into it. It may just be a bad phone. Warranty return it.
If you have rooted (and your wifi worked before) then do what I did. Install AEON v3 in the ATT Dev thread. The tether works perfectly, just like the entire ROM. I take another step though. I use ibVPN so they don't know what my data is. I don't really think you even need a VPN because the ROM is not based on the ATT base, so it isn't even looking for your tether.

I used SQLite to modify the file: /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
In the system database there is an entry with ID: 2771, named tether_entitlement_check_state. Originally the value was set to 5 but I changed it to 0. I then rebooted and tethering was working great for me.

I just checked on my Sprint G2 and, unfortunately, there's so such setting in that DB. I looked at the other tables in the settings.db and only "tether_dun_required" (set to 1) in global and "tethering_time" (set to 600000) in system.

You will either have to pay AT&T for tethering or root your phone and install a custom rom. They have a tether entitlement check on their phones.

I'm guessing this wouldn't do the trick, as dun is "dial up networking" I believe. I'd test it, but I'm actually unsure of how to *change* the database. It turns out sqlite generally doesn't come on production (non-dev) builds of Android, so it wasn't on the G2. I tried pushing some sqlite3 binaries I found online to the phone, but none would run. I then tried pulling the settings.db from the phone and reading it with sqlite3 for Windows. This would also let me change the setting, but I'm not sure if I could just push the settings.db file back onto the phone since there were other files in the same directory (settings.db.[some other extensions]) ... and I wanted to avoid corrupting the db to the extent that I bricked my phone (as unlikely as that may have been).
If anyone knows of a sqlite3 binary that will run on the G2, I'd be happy to give the dun setting a try (but again, I'm not optimistic this will do the trick for us Sprint users).
Also, I just got the zv8 update this morning, so you should be getting it any day now. I didn't root my phone 100%; I just copied over the g2_security file from the ioroot 1.1 zip so that adb would give me a root shell. Apparently installing the su binary and superuser.apk trips some sort of flag on the G2 that voids your warranty and may or may not be resettable.

This worked perfectly for me,however, it wasn't ID 2771 for my phone. I used search term "tether" in the system database and found the field under ID 854. I changed the value to 0 and it works great using the stock Tether application that comes with the phone. You may need to reboot the phone after making the change..
I could never get either wifi tether or wifi tether TrevE Mod to work for me.

I can now get the mobile hotspot to turn on no problem after changing the value to 0 and rebooting, but when I connect anything to it it says no internet access. I have an LG G2 on At&t

CAUTION
Be wary of this method. I'm on a rooted stock from with xposed and I got a text from AT&T after having tethered the night before. It read
"Did you know using a smartphone as a mobile hotspot requires a Mobile Share or Data Connect plan?"
Now today in the mail I received a long letter saying that if I'm caught tethering again they will be automatically charging me for the tethering plan.
In my opinion this method is no longer safe.

I also didn't have a key tether_entitlement_check_state. So I I just added a new key using a unique number (at the end) and gave it a value of zero and it worked !!!

Hello, when i do it, the value returns to 5. Any ideas?

Tethering?

I'm after the easiest way to tether my new moto G without it being picked up by my carrier. Previously I had a first gen moto G running various custom ROMS and it wasn't a problem. This is the first phone I've bought so close to launch and it's starting to be an issue, as the WIFI in my house is patchy at best and I can't be doing with hours of downtime. Anything which requires a client side programme is no good to me as I'm running a chromebook & things can be a little weird.
some luck
I have a moto e but same problem, ive done everything, edit with sql, edit buildprop, change apn settings. nothings helps but I did install xposed framework and the module X tether, that at least got native tethering to turn on but it wont connect to the net because of a dns problem, however, blue tooth tethering does work just fine so that's an option for you.
Any update on this? Does anyone know a ROM for this phone that still have the 'twist' to take a photo? Or the active display that's famous across all the moto phone?
I really enjoy those features but looking for a ROM or way to undetectable tether
