Untill a while ago it was clear, Google Photos whould sync the Google+/picasa photo content to your phone, Google+ would sync the social media part, and Google+ Photos was responsible for the auto backup part to sync your stuff back to the cloud.
I now find something called "Google Photos Auto Backup" calling the shots for the auto backup stuff, what the Google+ Photos entry used to do.
Does anyone know why these two are both there?

I'm wondering that as well...
I don't know, but after the latest Google plus update it enabled most of the Google plus sync that I had disabled before. Annoying.
I believe I figured it out by just trying stuff like a maniac
With 'Google+ photos' turned off, the only thing that stopped working was new photos I posted to Google+ not being pushed down to the photos app.
The auto backup feature has just been made a separate sync option.
So:
Google photos: sync google+/picasa albums to gallery app.
Google+ photos: same story but only for the photos app.
Google photos auto backup: new sync option pulled apart from google+ photos, only to auto backup from device image folders.

Let's be honest - this is a godforsaken mess.
There needs to be ONE app included in the OS for photos, and it should offer to sync them to various places with checkboxes. I don't know what's so difficult about that.
If expert users who know Android inside and out have trouble working out what various apps are for/do, then you can bet your bottom dollar the average user has literally NO chance of figuring it out.
I sometimes wonder if Google ever tests these ideas out on regular people, rather than just their blinkered engineers at Mountain View.
I was trying to keep my spirit up in this, but you nailed the real question here
Been on Android since Eclair, and it took me a day to test and find the differences once more.
Asked my veteran Android buddies. Also clueless, but we (and you ) can't stand not knowing. So testing, trying, figuring it out.
That kind of behavior is not to be expected from the average user indeed.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
My personal preference would be for Google to unlink Photos from the wakelock-hog Google+, and get rid of Gallery completely. And have Photos just sync photos where the user chooses to. At the moment I cannot use Photos because I don't want/use Google+ on my phone, so Gallery is my only option.
Google recently had it set up where if you delete a photo on "photos" it deletes it off your device finally. Decided to freeze gallery since I wouldn't be surprised if they get rid of it on 4.4.3.

Changelog:
See Google play store
===========================================
Purpose: The purpose of this application was to fix the infamous bug for ICS devices. The bug that I'm referring to is the one where contacts images downloaded to the device from your G-mail account blurry. This is app stores a copy on cropped images on SD card and then stores a reference. This way when you flash a new ROM or have to reset your phone then you can easily restore these high resolution photos back to contacts quick and painlessly.
THIS IS ONLY A WORKAROUND. THIS DOES NOT COMPLETELY FIX THE KNOWN GOOGLE ISSUE WITH LOW RES CONTACT IMAGES ON RESYNC

Does this provide multiple account sync (Facebook, Skype, etc)?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA
This does not interface with facebook or skype. Its purely contacts on just the phone level. You have to have the persons photo the first time you set everything up.
not working
I set an contact picture, i'ts all ok, backup database in hd contacts, remove google account, add google account, sync... low res contact picture.
Enter HD contacts app, restore database, apply picture, nothing changes. Select with long press contacts name in hd contacts app, selecting modify, turns "Curently no contact photo for this contact".
I did something wrong on these steps? pls help
I'm on android ICS 4.0.4.
p.s. sorry for bad english
A lot of manual work for me. I'll think I'll stick with High Resolution Google Contact Photos since it can pull photos from Facebook.

It does not fix the problem for Google contacts being blurry on sync. It is more of a workaround. But i have noticed a bug in my app and will be temporarily pulling the app from the market.

Love the app. What would make it perfect is if it faded to the next picture instead of just cutting to it. Could this be implemented please?

I'm sure the developer doesn't mean any harm. Hopefully he'll be able to explain why. I'm not a dev, yet all I know is that a lot of apps that enable you to share things on facebook and other sharing sites, like to have access to your accounts. Maybe this is why this app wants access too?
Either way, I think it's a fantastic app. If only I could wind back the clock by 3,5 years so I could start making pics from the day my son was born

sure, I don't suspect this, but I still would like to know - take es file explorer eg, that can also share to other services, yet doesn't need access to my accounts:

In the Play store it states that it will backup your project to your Google Drive account. This would be why the app needs access to accounts.
There seems to be a bug with recent CM10.1 builds and this app. It worked fine before, but now whenever I take a pic it just freezes on the camera screen (although the app itself is still responsive) it doesn't proceed to the preview screen to confirm the pic. However I noticed this only happens when my face is actually in the middle of the image. If I take a pic of something else it goes on to the preview screen just fine.
This makes me think it's something to do with the "slow and buggy" face detection, but I get the same results whether it's turned on or off.
Any ideas?
Great App!
Just became a dad 2 months ago and I love this app. However, it will only create an SD video. If I try to go 720 or 1080 it gives an error something like "failed to create video, try changing video settings".
I have tried a few different video settings to no avail. Has anyone got any ideas?
Regards
Keliuss
Hi Guys,
For some reason I didn't want the Google+ App, so I removed it with Titanium Backup. Now this also removed the new Google Photos app. However, whenever I capture an image through the default camera, the image preview (slide from right) opens in this app. (See below)

Firstly, I'm not sure how it ended up remaining partly in the system. Secondly, when I press the circled icon, the app force exits to the homescreen instead of taking me back to the gallery or camera. Not only that, the photo that is currently being previewed gets deleted. I mean common Google, you can't force me to use an app, if I don't want to!
Having said that, I would like to know if it is possible to change the default preview app from the photos app to the android gallery app? Or if thats not possible, is it possible to install only the G Photos app and not the entire G+ application?
TIA,
Cheers!:good:
Anyone?
I do not have "photos" installed nor google plus. Removed a bunch of google bloat via clean master. When I go into my camera and then slide right it goes into what you have posted the little google photos thing. But I use gallery as my photo app. I have this same deal as you posted it just doesn't bother me.
Download the picasa tool, that is just strictly photos and you can manage them on the cloud.
Hope this helps I will check back if this isn't clear.
I believe this can be resolved by going to your app list, and choosing "Clear Defaults" on Google+.

Can you confirm this, since you have Google plus still installed. It would be much easier for you to check it. Would be really helpful if you could check whether the gallery app can be set as the default previewing app by clearing the Google plus defaults.

I am simply ignoring it because it does not really bother me. I never actually view my photos this way versus just hitting the gallery app and since I have some in the cloud I use the picasa tool. I am pretty sure that once photos are removed gallery becomes default because I remember when looking at a photo in SMS it asked me for photos or gallery.

I thought I would respond to this because after flashing to lollipop this is really annoying me as well. I prefer quikpic but I cannot change the default viewer from the camera. I can verify clearing defaults does not resolve the problem.

Hello, normally you should simply follow the instructions. Google photos sync has to be enabled in the Google drive app.
Please contact me via mail using [email protected].
I will support you.
Thanks
Sent you an email.
Very nice app. Looks like it's working great
Thanks
Like others have noted on Google Play, nothing shows up for me either.
That looks so great, i am going to try add for some ıstanbul views if its possible
For all who are facing problems: the sync process can take some time. If photos are missing, please switch the sync off and on again.
Here is the local storage version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.levionsoftware.instagram_map
I can provide support by mail if you want. Thanks. Denny
I just wanted to let you know that I don't use ANY analytics or home servers. Your files are safe and ONLY ON YOUR DEVICE! Only this app has access to your files. ONLY PHOTOS (ONLY your "Google Photos" Folder) are queried to get the following information: id, name, size, mimeType, fileExtension, imageMediaMetadata/location, createdTime, webContentLink, thumbnailLink
Hm - Photo Map shows me only my pictures from before 2015, and if I check Google Drive from a browser, it also only shows these photos. Iirc, 2015 was when Google introduced the cloud sync with reduced "optimized" quality (rather than original quality). Photos synced with "optimized" quality are not counted against the Drive quota, but also seem to not show up in Google Drive at all, and I guess this is why Photo Map also does not see them.
I would suppose (just guessing, of course) that this is also the reason for others not seeing their photos: "optimzed" quality sync?
Cheers
tadzio
My app is in the Top 10 TRENDING of photography!!

A new version with some bug fixes has been released. Try it out!
I improved the user interface, you will be happy to see a bigger & cleaner map!
Major bugfixes has been released in the last days!
I released a version dedicated to Google Drive: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.levionsoftware.photo_map_for_google_drive
The other app loads only the Google Photos folder (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.levionsoftware.photo_map_for_google_photos)
A new version is coming out very soon. The data source will be the official Google photos API and the location history will be used as location data.
I think I will create another post because I can't edit the title of the current one.
Stay tuned!
Is there any (simple) way to change the location info of a photo?
The original purple version of photo map will become an all in one app for all providers, inclusive cloud! Be prepared and stay tuned!

Ive just come from using galaxy phones. The stock app on that is way way better than the one on the op7p. I'd love to be able to import it over somehow. I'm currently using F-Stop gallery which is pretty good
I have Google photos app along with my Amazon prime photos but I still miss the simple gallery that was LG even Samsung's is better on my old gs6. I'll pay $5 for a decent app but all on play store seem to be bad
I'm using Simple Gallery Pro
Only Google photos here, actually i disabled stock gallery and even stock camera app opens Google photos as default.

Oh I see, maybe that's why I was dealing with issues when I previously disabled the stock Gallery (didn't select a new default).
However I noticed slow motion videos don't properly play on my iMac unless I edit and save the video with the stock Gallery app, so I may have to keep it for that one reason.
Unfortunate because I was wanting to freeze the app now that I know the issue I previously mentioned can be resolved by setting a different gallery app as default.
Do you guys know of any gallery apps that allows printing from the 3 dot menu? I use Piktures because it has the option, but the UI bothers me a bit so wanted to see if there were other alternatives.
