Hello everyone,
My little sister’s phone (Samsung Nexus S GT-i9023, not rooted) won’t boot.
She tells me that the phone’s power button wasn’t working anymore, so the battery was running out quickly because the screen was always on. So she started pulling the battery everytime she wanted to turn it off (yes…).
But after a few days doing that, the phone now refuses to boot.
- Pressing the power button doesn’t do anything.
- When the phone is plugged in (whether to a wall socket or to a computer), it won’t boot past a dimly lit screen. The screen goes from very dark grey (but slightly lit, as if it was starting to boot) to completely dark every 10 seconds. It also gets very hot in a few minutes.
I am thus unable to boot the phone, or access recovery mode (power + volume up) or any other menu to do a factory reset.
My 2 questions:
1/ Does anyone have any idea on what the problem could be? I’m thinking it might be the battery, but it seems like the only replacement batteries you can find are unofficial ones with very poor ratings…
2/ If the phone is dead, is there any way to recover the files on it? (local storage) It’s mostly pictures, movies and music that she had uploaded on it. Since the phone won’t boot, my Mac isn’t able to recognize it, and it doesn’t appear anywhere in Disk Utility (nor in diskutil list).

I honesty don't know how to describe my problem so I guess I will just tell you whats happening and what I know about my phone.
My phone:
Unlocked Verizon Galaxy S3 running CM for recovery, and CyanogenMod 10 for the ROM (Updated with Odin from Jelly Bean).
The issue:
1) Whenever I press the power button the phone completely shuts off. It doesn't just go to the lock screen, it turns off.
2) The phone will not always turn back on.
3) 85% of the time when it doesn't turn on, it boots into the first splash screen and turns off.
4) When I try to put the phone into download or recovery mode the first screen will pop up for about two seconds and then the phone will turn off again. The phone will either shut down on the cancel/download screen for download mode or the first splash screen with the blue text at the top for recovery mode.
5) The other 15% of the time it will reach the CyanogenMod screen, freeze, then shut off.
6) When I put it on the charger, the stock charging icon pops up but then the phone stops charging and shuts off. (It will charge correctly some times)
These things don't just happen if I press the power button. I used a custom app to turn the phone off without the power button and the problems still occurred.
Things I've tried:
1) Replacing the battery.
2) Switching chargers.
3) Leaving the phone on the charger for a while.
4) Taking the battery out for extended amounts of time.
5) Just leaving the phone alone for a while.
No, the power button isn't stuck... I don't think it is
I am aware that the motherboard might need replaced. However, most of the cases I read about involved the phone not turning on/charging at all. If I could get the phone into recovery mode I would clear the cache and see if that worked, if not I would just factory reset the phone. If I could get into download mode, I would flash a stock firmware and be done with it.
This is my second android phone and I've never had this problem before. I did my experimenting with my old Motorola Droid so I could make sure I knew what was safe with my S3 but apparently there is something wrong.

I began hitting the power button against a hard surface and 1 out of 7 times it works. Perhaps the button is stuck.

I am now able to press the power button without the phone turning off. I will still make a back up and sync all of my important media and prepare to have to factory reset and flash a new ROM.
Pixel 2, unrooted, stock, locked bootloader.
I was providing power to another pixel 2 far from a power outlet. After ~15 minutes, the phones were behaving fine. After I ate (about 45 minutes later), I unplugged the phones and my phone (the one providing power) had a black screen that would not turn on (there is no screen cover; i've heard of those causing issues with the head sensor and turning the screen off)
At first I thought the device had been drained, but the fingerprint sensor responds with the normal haptic blip. If I press the power button right afterward, the fingerprint sensor used to also flash the screen veeeeery slightly, as though it were off and being turned back on, but it no longer does that.
Troubleshooting steps so far performed:
held power button for >30 seconds: causes a long haptic blip that repeats itself every 30 seconds. No other response, and the phone acts like it's off; it no longer does the short blip on fingerprint sensor use (how I get it "on" again is a bit of a mystery, as there's no haptic feedback to represent turning on; probably something I do "boots" it silently and it starts haptic blipping once that's done)
held power button and vol.down at the same time: results vary based on whether it's "off" (after 30 sec power press). If off, nothing happens. If on, after 30 seconds I get the long and the short haptic blips in sequence.
tried to connect pixel buds to it to see if assistant would talk to me. pixel buds wouldn't connect.
charged for 20 minutes and then performed the steps above.
did NOT try calling it before I switched my sim to an older back-up device and now I can't re-activate it on the dead phone to try that.
Still no dice. Dead-seeming phone. One thing I was wondering about... I've noticed when these 2 phones are touching (stacked), they prompt some kind of linking or sharing (well, they don't NOW but they did when they were both alive). Is it possible that my phone offered to cast to the other phone and my leg confirmed while it was in my pocket? Surely it wouldn't continue to cast after being restarted? (this is a reach but it's all I can think of)
Recently discovered the alarm is still set. It went off at 7:15 this morning (correct time), but NOT with the alarm ringtone I have set. So either some settings are wonky or... maybe it's unable to mount the storage filesystem? I can either turn it off by holding the power for 30 seconds or by turning the volume down (volume keys still work)
I'm traveling with a mac right now but when I get back to a PC, is there any chance I could get somewhere with something like ADB (without wiping the device)? I might need some specific steps as I usually only tinker with scripts like wugfresh's.
Google wants to send me a refurb but the device is only 19 days old and I'd rather have a new device when I paid for a new device.

Don't want to quote all of that, so I'll just say that you can download the Mac version of the tools, download the latest factory image, edit the flash-all.sh to remove the -w, so you don't wipe userdata, and then just run the newly saved script. But, you do have to unlock the bootloader first.

Thanks for the reply. I'm back home so I can use my PC now... but I haven't unlocked the bootloader, so I gather I'll lose all my data if I unlock it? Is there any way to extract data without being able to enable data transfer mode on the device?
Also, if I can't get a screen, I can't boot to fastboot or recovery... Will I be able to actually do anything at all?
Hello! I could not find a section for my phone, so I am posting here.
My Zenfone 5 Selfie/Lite (ZC600KL) randomly "bricked". After being left alone charging for 20 minutes, when I came back it was turned off. Holding the power button resulted in the phone showing the "Powered by Android" logo, then the ASUS logo, and stop there.
I don't think it's a battery issue as it always lasted a long period of time; this is the first time anything like that happens, and might be the last. I also never tried meddling with my phone (rooting or the likes of it), so I'm pretty much clueless. I messed around with the phone, turning it on and off for a while, letting it run out of battery and charge it again, leaving it stuck on ASUS logo over night, to no avail.
Here are some things that I noticed that might help solve this problem:
1. After I connect the charger, the screen shows an empty charging battery along with the LED showing the red color (which means no battery). After 5 seconds, the screen turns on again by itself to show the true state of the battery, which is whatever % it is right now and the correct LED light (orange/green).
2. Turning on the phone makes the "low battery" buzz followed by a normal vibration. If it's charging, the "No battery" red LED shows.
3. I can turn on the fastboot mode by pressing Volume + and Power, but it only shows "CSC Fastboot mode!!! Long press power key to shutdown device". While on fastboot, my computer recognizes the phone is connected through USB, but I cannot access the phone's storage.
4. Pressing Volume - and Power does nothing besides restarting the phone.
My english isn't the best, so I apologize. If there's anything that I messed up and you can't understand, please do tell me.

i have desame phone and exactly desame problem as you have now
we have desame phone my phone suddenly restart then it goes stuck on asus logo only power button and up volume can be click it goes csc fastboot mode and no vibration, did u fix yours ?

Exactly the same problem and phone I have here and Google research has been useless plus it appears this model phone has many firmware versions also
I have tried flashing firmware in fastboot mode but the ADB and fastboot tools won't work as it shows write protected as it appears bootloader is locked and am struggling with QPST also got so desperate to get phone working I even checked out some of those android repair software like DR fone then realised they want $70 USD and instantly removed the software haha
Hope we can get answers but seems like that maybe no one has solutions for this
Hi, I started having the strangest issue 2 days ago. Phone model is Samsung Galaxy A50.
I have been unable to unlock my phone once I pressed the lock button or if it went to sleep (screen off).
The only way out of the issue is to restart it by pressing volume down and power for 5 seconds. I put the screen timeout to 10mins (which is the maximum). But no long term solution. Whenever the screen turns dark it stays dark. If a call comes in, the phone vibrates (or ring) but any interaction with the phone is impossible. If I play music, the music continues once the screen is off. The sound can be turned up or down, but it's the only thing that can be done.
While the screen is on, changing the volume via the buttons affects the actual volume of the music, but there is no UI indication that the volume changes, no popup nothing.
So all physical buttons are working correctly.
I have trie "reset parameters", I have tried "reset all data" (backed up everything through Smart Switch). It doesn't change a thing. The phone is reset (still on android 11 though, although I bought it on android 10...) but the issue remains.
Now something very interesting :
Just now, I setup Phone Link for windows 10, so that I am able to see and answer texts and phone calls while at the office. Which works, it sort of defeats the purpose of a "cellular" phone but well...
HOWEVER : while my phone is connected to my desktop through Phone Link. I can lock and unlock at will, change volume and see the UI pop up (via the windows interface or directly on the phone, same behaviour) It's basically fixed. I thought it was fixed for good, so I disconnected my phone from Phone Link. The screen went black as before and there was nothing I could do except reconnect it via Windows 10 (then it immediately starts behaving as usual again...).
My guess is it's definitely software. I just don't understand why a factory reset didn't do the trick...
I wanted to try and reset through the bootloader, but I never managed to effectively get into the bootloader (through volume up and power while the phone is off).
I do not recall making any updates or installing anything just before these symptoms occured. I did install a firmware update that was available after these symptoms started but to no avail

A few weeks after switching from my old S7 Edge to my old S8 (which I did about a month ago), I tried turning on my S7 Edge only for it to enter recovery mode. Since the power button is broken, I figured I would have to reboot it out of recovery mode using ADB on my PC. When I switched my S7 on again the next day to enter recovery mode and connect it to my PC, I got to the "installing updates" screen that precedes recovery mode. This screen showed up for about three seconds before my screen went black. After 10 seconds my phone rebooted and went back to the "installing updates" screen, went black, rebooted, and so on.
I think my phone might be out of battery so when it charges a little bit, it automatically tries to enter recovery mode, which uses up all the power in the battery and causes it to die, restarting the cycle. Is there any way I can stop my phone from automatically turning on when it is plugged in so that it can charge enough to actually make it to recovery mode?

For some reason, the bootloader on this device remembers if you were last booted into recovery, and will return to it on the next poweron, so - without a working power button - there aren't very many options.
The power button could be an easy fix - depending on if it's stuck or damaged. The outer parts of the volume and power buttons on this device are interchangable, so that could make all boot modes possible again. Opening your device may sound scary, but - with good research and some patience - you will find it is certainly doable using basic tools. And if you don't want to do it yourself, a local repair shop would probably do it for cheap as well.
As far is I know, there isn't any usable software fix without a working power button.
