Pixel 2, unrooted, stock, locked bootloader.
I was providing power to another pixel 2 far from a power outlet. After ~15 minutes, the phones were behaving fine. After I ate (about 45 minutes later), I unplugged the phones and my phone (the one providing power) had a black screen that would not turn on (there is no screen cover; i've heard of those causing issues with the head sensor and turning the screen off)
At first I thought the device had been drained, but the fingerprint sensor responds with the normal haptic blip. If I press the power button right afterward, the fingerprint sensor used to also flash the screen veeeeery slightly, as though it were off and being turned back on, but it no longer does that.
Troubleshooting steps so far performed:
held power button for >30 seconds: causes a long haptic blip that repeats itself every 30 seconds. No other response, and the phone acts like it's off; it no longer does the short blip on fingerprint sensor use (how I get it "on" again is a bit of a mystery, as there's no haptic feedback to represent turning on; probably something I do "boots" it silently and it starts haptic blipping once that's done)
held power button and vol.down at the same time: results vary based on whether it's "off" (after 30 sec power press). If off, nothing happens. If on, after 30 seconds I get the long and the short haptic blips in sequence.
tried to connect pixel buds to it to see if assistant would talk to me. pixel buds wouldn't connect.
charged for 20 minutes and then performed the steps above.
did NOT try calling it before I switched my sim to an older back-up device and now I can't re-activate it on the dead phone to try that.
Still no dice. Dead-seeming phone. One thing I was wondering about... I've noticed when these 2 phones are touching (stacked), they prompt some kind of linking or sharing (well, they don't NOW but they did when they were both alive). Is it possible that my phone offered to cast to the other phone and my leg confirmed while it was in my pocket? Surely it wouldn't continue to cast after being restarted? (this is a reach but it's all I can think of)
Recently discovered the alarm is still set. It went off at 7:15 this morning (correct time), but NOT with the alarm ringtone I have set. So either some settings are wonky or... maybe it's unable to mount the storage filesystem? I can either turn it off by holding the power for 30 seconds or by turning the volume down (volume keys still work)
I'm traveling with a mac right now but when I get back to a PC, is there any chance I could get somewhere with something like ADB (without wiping the device)? I might need some specific steps as I usually only tinker with scripts like wugfresh's.
Google wants to send me a refurb but the device is only 19 days old and I'd rather have a new device when I paid for a new device.
Thanks!
Don't want to quote all of that, so I'll just say that you can download the Mac version of the tools, download the latest factory image, edit the flash-all.sh to remove the -w, so you don't wipe userdata, and then just run the newly saved script. But, you do have to unlock the bootloader first.

Thanks for the reply. I'm back home so I can use my PC now... but I haven't unlocked the bootloader, so I gather I'll lose all my data if I unlock it? Is there any way to extract data without being able to enable data transfer mode on the device?
Also, if I can't get a screen, I can't boot to fastboot or recovery... Will I be able to actually do anything at all?

I didn't drop it or get it wet or anything, it was just sitting on my desk and it randomly shut off. I've tried shutting it off and on again but it just comes back to the google screen where it sits frozen for about 30ish+ minutes before it shuts off, I can't turn it off otherwise, if I try turning it off it just turns itself back on so I can't shut it off. Is there anything I can do to save my data (or even better, fix my phone) or am I screwed? I also don't have USB Debugging turned on so I can't get stuff back that way either. I has an issue with it a few months ago with the power button but it was stuck in a constant bootloop (I later found out that the power button was physically stuck, and a few hard flicks fixed it) , now it's just frozen on the google logo for 30-40ish minutes and then it shuts off by itself. Could that still be an issue with the power button?

I'm kinda confused on how this is the power button. On a working Nexus 5, if you hold the power button down the phone just continually resets, now it freezes on bootup and doesn't shut off for a really long time. Then after it shuts off, you have to manually turn it back on (then it just freezes again). I feel like this is could be a software issue but I might be wrong.
I've seen posts saying to reset the cache partition. Will that wipe the data on my phone?
I went into recovery mode (Does this mean the power button is fine, since I could successfully navigate the boot menu) and tried to format the cache and it says it was wiping /cache for about 20 minutes then it shut off and the notification light started blinking red and the phone wouldn't turn on at all when I held the power button. I assumed this meant the battery died during the cache wipe (Is that what the red light means, if so is that bad?) so I plugged the phone in. After about 30 seconds I could turn it on again, but it just holds at the google screen again. I'm really starting to freak out as I have some unbacked up data. Even if I can't fix the phone, is there any way I could save the data? I have a locked bootloader and USB debugging is turned off (Yes, I'm an idiot).
It does sound like a faulty power button. Since it's very cheap to fix, I would first find a local lab to change the button. At least rule out that..
If you can't fix the phone, you cannot get the data.
Also, be carful with bootloader and adb, so you don"t accidentaly erase your data.

The nearest phone-repair shop is like 45 minutes to an hour away from me so I want to be sure this is it. How exactly would a faulty power button cause this to happen? The phone isn't acting like the power button is permanently held down or not held down at all and I was able to get through the boot menu to the clear cache partition menu which requires use of the power button (And has the shut-off and blinking red light interrupting the cache clear made things worse), all that seems to be happening is the phone freezes during boot-up.

This sentence points all fingers at the power button
"I've tried shutting it off and on again but it just comes back to the google screen where it sits frozen for about 30ish+ minutes before it shuts off, I can't turn it off otherwise, if I try turning it off it just turns itself back on so I can't shut it off"
If you turn it off and it comes back on. it's the power button
Some symptoms of a faulty power button
If your LG Nexus 5 keeps rebooting for no reason to the Google Logo only
you cannot lock the screen
screen locks on its own
phone turns off for no reason during regular use
Lock/power Button is VERY sensitive to touch

The power button is not dead, it's faulty, and behaves erratically. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. It's an educated guess. If you put in a lab, and it's not the power button, perhaps they will know what else could be wrong. It's your call.
Just got back from the repair shop, it's not the power button, it's some unknown software issue. They can't fix it. Anyone have any ideas?
This is very odd. I am not aware of any software issue that can prevent a physical shutdown of a phone. Was this a reputable lab?

The phone shut itself off after a period of time, but holding the power button just restarts it. They replaced the power button just to be sure and it didn't fix it.
When you connect the phone to a PC does it show up? Can you copy your data? If not, I don't think you can save the data.
One more thought: If you put the phone in bootloader state, does it still shut down or restart by itself?
I just talked to the phone repair people and they said they just found out it's not software, a circuit in the motherboard got fried and they only way they could fix the phone would be to swap out the motherboard.
That is a 200$ reapair. Before you do that or give up on your phone try my guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/nexus-5-stuck-boot-loop-lollipop-t3098632
I had a different problem but was also told by the local LG lab that it was the motherboard. It wasn't,
If my guide does not help, it probably is a hardware issue. See if the lab has an insurance deal. Over here they suggested to sell me a one year insurance for 150$ , and change the motherboard. That would have saved me 50$....
Hi,
First I hope I'm posting this in the right place - to get assistance/direction that will help my situation. If not my apologies - please send me to the right place.
I have a Nexus 5, Android 5.0.1, Rooted.
- My device was charging then suddenly went into boot cycle - showing the Google logo then powering off and repeating the same. Trying to get into recovery mode was impossible - would power cycle out of there too.
- I have tried doing the multiple fast press, and sticky button clean solution (actually taking the back plate off etc.) posted out on the net but that has not resolved my issue.
- Left my phone to charge overnight. The problem still persists. More accurately. Turning it on without it plugged in to the charger does nothing.
All the following is the behavior when its plugged into the charger:
- Without pressing any button just shows a full battery charge icon for about 8 sec then the screen turns black for two seconds and that keeps on repeating. If I press the power button it shows the Google logo for a 1.5 seconds and shuts of, going back to the battery charge icon flashing cycle.
- Now if I press the power and volume down button It takes me to the fast boot mode screen where can cycle through the menu's <Start, Restart Bootloader, Recovery mode, power off>. None of the options work. No matter which I chose the phone shuts of and goes back to the full battery icon cycle.
- I was thinking a battery issue but, when in recovery mode the phone will not turn off. I can use the volume buttons to go through the menu as pointed above but using the power button just takes me back to the battery icon cycle. Now I'm not sure, battery, power button or software. What could it be?
I am thinking, try a new battery or, damn buy a new phone (my phone has outlived its warranty). If there are any ideas on fixing this I'll appreciate your opinions. If i have to get a new phone is there any hope of salvaging data. I have a 4 month backup on my computer, but my latest is stored on my phone.
Thanks.
If you run into this issue and none of the solutions in my original post apply, read on in case my final solution helps you out (you might not even have to get paid help if you know how to work on the fault I was experiencing). If not - nothing more for you to gain if you read on.
As it stands:
I took my device to a reputable cell repair shop. After describing to them the symptoms of my device the out ruled the stuck power button issue and tentatively diagnosed it as a firmware bug or nand memory corruption issue which would require a nand mem flash which they had the tools to do. I went for it.
When I went to pickup the device. They reported that the device was functional and they did not even have to do the flush. My data is safe. Issue was a loose battery contact which they detected and fixed. It's been 8 hours and all looks good. These guys were going to charge me a $80 bill to do the flash if the recovery was successful, but I had to leave a $56 deposit after tax for them to begin the work and pay the balance if the procedure was successful. When closing the deal they just gave me the device and said since they did not have to do what they anticipated, the deposit I left them was satisfactory.
I have my device back and working (at least for now) and have the chance to make external backups incase the issue reoccurs. I'm happy. Cheers.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is one of the most powerful and good looking smartphones available on the market right now. I know, the S9 was recently introduced, but the differences aren’t that big, so a lot of people are getting last year’s flagship, for a very good price.
Let’s say that you’re one of them and got it for a while. Suddenly, the Samsung Galaxy S8 won’t turn on, no matter which method you use to unlock it, raising some serious question marks. Is the phone broken? Is something you can do to fix it yourself? Should you take it to a service?
We will find answers to these questions together, through this guide! But first, let’s see which are the actual reasons why the phone won’t turn on.
Why is my Samsung Galaxy S8 not turning on?
Like in most cases, there are various problems causing this, both of them split into two categories: software glitches or technical issues.
Fortunately, there’s solution almost all the time, except when a part of your phone is damaged and needs replacement, so you need to take a phone to a service and leave professionals to take care of it.
Now, let’s see the steps you need to follow if your Samsung Galaxy S8 won’t turn on.
Unlock it correctly
It’s possible for your phone unlocking method of choice to have trouble responding. If you don’t have any authentication method, just hit the Power Button correctly and see if the phone turns on.
Many users reported that, sometimes, pressing it improperly may cause the device not to turn on. Yes, it sounds weird, but it’s something you can try.
If you opted for fingerprint authentication and the phone doesn’t turn on, make sure you’re placing your index (or whatever finger you’re using for unlocking) in the middle of the scanner. It should unlock in a few seconds. Otherwise, the scanner will vibrate for a moment, which means that your finger is not placed correctly.
If these methods don’t work, then move on to the next one.
Perform a soft reset
If you can’t unlock the phone properly and the screen remains black, a soft reset is the next thing you can do. Basically, you’re ruling out the possibility of the firmware crashing or other minor software issues.
On older Android handsets, this was done by taking of the battery and putting it back on, but since the Galaxy S8 power pack is not removable, you’ll have to use another way. Specifically:
Press and hold the Power Button and the Volume Down Key for around 10 seconds
Wait until the Samsung logo shows up on the screen
Give it a few moments until it boots completely
After this, unlock your phone, then try turning it on again and see if the issue appears. If it does, it means that it’s a bit more difficult to fix than you believed. If it works properly though, but you still encounter this issue once in a while, it means that there’s something wrong with the phone and you should try get it replaced.
Charge the phone
Before worrying, you must rule out the scenario in which your Samsung Galaxy S8 won’t turn on because the battery hasn’t been charged.
Therefore, using the charger the phone came with, leave it plugged for at least five minutes and see if the charging icon appears and the LED indicator lights up. If both of these are present, leave the phone charging for a few more minutes and try powering it back on. It should be ok.
If the Fast Charger doesn’t seem to be charging the phone, it means that it has some problems on its own. Try another charger or switch the wall adapter.
On the other side, if none of these signs are showing, it means that the phone is not charging and there’s something messing with it, like a faulty app, for example. If you’re in this situation, proceed to the next step.
Boot the phone in Safe Mode
This method will power up your phone just with the stuff it has out of the box, so no third-party apps or anything else you installed.
In order to put it in this mode, follow these steps:
Presuming that your phone is turned off, press and hold the Power Button past the screen with the phone’s name and model
As soon as you see the Samsung logo appearing on the screen, release the Power Button
Right after this, press and hold the Volume Down key
Continue holding the Volume Down key until your phone finishes restarting
You should now see Safe Mode written in the bottom left corner of the display
Release the Volume Down key
Now you can start uninstalling any app that causes your Samsung Galaxy S8 to not turn on. Start with the ones that look suspicious and see if the issue persists.
Boot the phone in Recovery Mode
Finally, there’s one more thing you can do to troubleshoot the device and see if a software glitch is indeed the reason why your Samsung Galaxy S8 won’t turn on.
Press and hold the Power Button, Bixby Button, and the Volume Up key at the same time, until the phone vibrates
Once you feel the vibration, release the Power Button, but keep the other two buttons pressed
You should now see the Android Recovery screen
Release all keys
Using the volume keys, select the Clear Cache Partition option
Confirm your choice using the Power button
Wait for a few moments, until the phone restarts
If none of these are working, it’s definitely an issue with the screen itself, meaning that you need to have it verified.
Check your phone’s screen
First thing first, you need to inspect the display for any potential damage. Make sure it’s not chipped, cracked or damaged. Such issues can completely affect its functionality.
If you can find any of these on the surface of the display, take it to a service and have it replaced. However, it the issue persists and the Samsung Galaxy S8 won’t turn on even after getting a new display, it’s better to get a new phone, as long as you’re covered by warranty. You’re definitely dealing with a complicated hardware issue.
Hold powerbutton and volume down pressed for 10 seconds. This will reboot any locked s8, maybe it's stuck at boot after your flash.

brother thanks i left phone for overnight next day somehow it got into download mode ......flashed twrp and restore my old rom......
(TLDR: OnePlus5, power button not responding, volume buttons physically damaged, USB debugging not turned on, can connect phone via USB to PC, but nothing more. Want to turn on USB debugging to boot via ADB. Or boot any other way, if possible.)
Hello everyone,
Let me tell you the short story of the horrible mistake I made today. I was not able to put my phone to sleep using the power button, which seemed odd. I had dropped it before, so I got suspicious. At some point, I managed to long-press the power button and went: "Oh, looks like the button is working. Lets just restart the phone, I am sure it will all be fine again." ...
Oh, boy – was I wrong. After shutting down the phone, I was not able to restart the phone using the power button. It was not responding, just like before, when I couldn't put the phone to sleep. It was at this point that I noticed, that my volume buttons are physically damaged. By now probably everyone can imagine where this is going. The power button does not respond, the volume buttons – which I need to boot into recovery mode – are physically broken. So I am now sitting in front of a black screen. I am not even 100% certain that it is off.
I know how to use ADB. However, not if USB debugging is not turned on. I never did this on my private phone, as I had no use for USB debugging. I did turn on developer options at some point, but I never turned on USB debugging. The phone does get recognized by my PC, but not by ADB.
So here I am. The phone was working fine before I shut it off and I would like to at least turn it on to see what can be done from there. I am somewhat confident I would be able to boot it with ADB, but it seems there is no chance to do that, because USB debugging was never turned on.
Does anyone have an idea how to go about fixing this issue? As a last resort, I thought about visiting a repair shop, to see if the power button could be circumvented after removing the phone's shell. But are there any other suggestions, before I dump €50 to pay someone that has the tools to open up the phone?
Cheers,
Bunny
Take it to authorized service center and let them try to fix it.
BTW:
IMO the 1st thing of all things every user should do when he gets a new phone is to immediately enable USB debugging ( aka ADB ) this because ADB is the door to phone's Android. And the best part: it costs nothing.

I probably wont spend the money on a repair shop. The screen is broken at multiple points. Who knows what is gonna happen when they open that thing up. I bought a very cheap temporary replacement and on the lookout for new options. Lesson learned. Turn on USB debugging – always.
A bunch of us here are pretty good navigating with with either a broken screen or broken buttons, but with both that's a challenge.
Some have even managed to enable ADB and authorization in the OS from TWRP.
If you already bought a replacement I'd open it up and see if you can get the buttons working again.

After letting the power drain from the phone, I noticed that the power button is not actually malfunctioning. When I try to turn it on, I *do* get the message, that power is too low. The volume buttons are definitely physically beyond repair (would need to exchange), but the power button still works (as it looks like). So I can "turn on" the phone, but it does not boot correctly. (?) Does this new information tell us anything? I guess the biggest problem is that I can't make it into recovery mode without the volume buttons? I have tinkered around with the iFixit Toolkit in the past. I am not sure if I want to spend that time (and money, since I don't have the toolkit anymore).

Yes, I did that. But it does not start. What I meant was: The fact that power button returns the "too low battery"-message, when the battery is empty, means that the button itself is not broken. I charged it overnight, but the phone remains in black-screen (and does not trigger the usual "vibration" upon turning on). So my conclusion is, that the button is working, but the still does not boot correctly.
AFAIK a phone only starts Android OS if its battery charge level is >= 5%.

Alright, but what does this tell me? The error message appears when I let the battery drain purposefully. The OS still does not start after charging overnight (without any error message, just black screen).

Yup, I have tried holding down the button for minutes. Also, I believe the phone is charging. After leaving it connected over night, I need to wait approx. a full battery cycle to produce the "battery too low"-message again. The only thing the power button allows me to do, is produce the "battery too low"-message.
I guess the damage is more severe than I initially thought. I already bought a cheap, temporary replacement. I think I won't pursue this issue further. I guess I could try to flash it, but without recovery mode (no volume buttons) or USB debugging that sounds like quite an undertaking.
Thank you two for trying to help out!

Hi, I started having the strangest issue 2 days ago. Phone model is Samsung Galaxy A50.
I have been unable to unlock my phone once I pressed the lock button or if it went to sleep (screen off).
The only way out of the issue is to restart it by pressing volume down and power for 5 seconds. I put the screen timeout to 10mins (which is the maximum). But no long term solution. Whenever the screen turns dark it stays dark. If a call comes in, the phone vibrates (or ring) but any interaction with the phone is impossible. If I play music, the music continues once the screen is off. The sound can be turned up or down, but it's the only thing that can be done.
While the screen is on, changing the volume via the buttons affects the actual volume of the music, but there is no UI indication that the volume changes, no popup nothing.
So all physical buttons are working correctly.
I have trie "reset parameters", I have tried "reset all data" (backed up everything through Smart Switch). It doesn't change a thing. The phone is reset (still on android 11 though, although I bought it on android 10...) but the issue remains.
Now something very interesting :
Just now, I setup Phone Link for windows 10, so that I am able to see and answer texts and phone calls while at the office. Which works, it sort of defeats the purpose of a "cellular" phone but well...
HOWEVER : while my phone is connected to my desktop through Phone Link. I can lock and unlock at will, change volume and see the UI pop up (via the windows interface or directly on the phone, same behaviour) It's basically fixed. I thought it was fixed for good, so I disconnected my phone from Phone Link. The screen went black as before and there was nothing I could do except reconnect it via Windows 10 (then it immediately starts behaving as usual again...).
My guess is it's definitely software. I just don't understand why a factory reset didn't do the trick...
I wanted to try and reset through the bootloader, but I never managed to effectively get into the bootloader (through volume up and power while the phone is off).
I do not recall making any updates or installing anything just before these symptoms occured. I did install a firmware update that was available after these symptoms started but to no avail
Has anybody seen this before ? Thanks in advance
