[Q] S-off for 5.18 firmware???? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I just bought the at&t htc one x online. It come with the 5.18 firmware.
I did a little research but could only root the phone with WeakSauce.
I have tried the firewater but not any luck yet.
Is there any way that I could install Recovery or unlock bootloader for now?( I try HTC-DEv but they give me the Error Code: 160.
Error Reason: MID Not Allowed.). I also try change CID but still got the CWS_001
Are we stuck here in 5.18?
By the way, when I boot into bootloader, the phone shows "Tampered" and "Locked"
Is it normal?
Thank you very much.

No, there is no way at all you can install a custom recovery. In order to do that you need an unlocked bootloader, which you can't do because there is no exploit to get SuperCID on the 5.18 firmware. The closest you're gonna get is temp root via Weaksauce, which will only allow you to install root apps, you are unable to install any custom ROMs. Unless a highly skilled dev releases a crack (don't hold your breath, this is an old phone now) you're stuck in this situation.

[Q] Root Help?

I currently have an AT&T HTC One XL, and have been looking for a root exploit for such a long time. I finally came upon this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2285086
My question is, how do I gain root? I want to do a Nandroid backup before I lose all of my data.
Here is my understanding of the process. I've run the script, which changes my superCID to 11111111, which allows me to unlock the bootloader through HTC Dev, which gives me root. However, in the process of unlocking the bootloader, I lose all of my data.
Am I correct? If not, then how can I perform a Nandroid backup/get root on my phone?
Just FYI, I've never rooted before, so I'm a gigantic noob at all of this
Thanks for all of the help anyone can give!

You can't do a nandroid backup because that requires doing a backup in TWRP and you can't without root BUUUUUUTTTT you can do a backup using adb, go Google it.

its super simple with my basic basic knowledge

to gain super CID all you have to do is get ADB, adbwinapi.dll, adbwinusbapi.dll and fastboot. You can get all these files from the All in One zip root kit. I recommend flashing TWRP onto your phone and once your able to use the 3.18 exploit by myusernam3. To be able to use ADB all you need to know is some basic commands through command prompt.
Basically
Download the All in One Root Kit
Download the 3.18 exploit
Download TWRP 2.5
Extract all the files into one folder onto C:\
once you confirm you have super CID all 1s you can get your token ID and paste it onto the HTC dev site. Youll get a unlock code.bin
once you unlock your bootloader you can flash your phone with TWRP. To get into TWRP you need to hold volume down plus power. Once your in the bootloader go into recovery. Once your in recovery everything else is cake!
Note: If you took OTA and your on JB 4.1.1 you will not be able to run android open source roms because the touchpanel screen will not work. Meaning if you want to run CM roms they won't work unless you have hboot 1.09 i believe.
You can downgrade the touchscreen firmware for aosp ROMs. There's a sticky in original android dev.

Hey all,
Thanks for replying. I've got my phone rooted and on MIUI 3.5.3 (which I personally don't think gets enough credit as it looks amazing). I had done the OTA update to 4.1.1 (3.18), and have hboot 1.14, and still have touchscreen capabilities however. Is that abnormal? (Not that I'm bored, but I'm just curious)
3.18 update would give you 2.14 hboot.

how to s-off without htcdev "htc one x" 4.2.2 sense 5?

hello everyone, android user and my device s-off in the first year I want to do but how to do it without the support of htcdev? Is there a program available? When I unlock my device also has root? Am I going to root sturdy at the same time to s-off? I just want to get rid of device applications that official. 5 4.2.2 installed on my device, this device can sense it possible to root for?
Thank you.
I think you're confused as to what s-off is and unlocking is, they're two entirely different things. You don't use htcdev to get s-off. You use htcdev to unlock your bootloader, and no you cannot unlock your bootloader without htcdev. Unlocking your bootloader doesn't give you root, after unlocking the bootloader you must install a custom recovery and then you can gain root. After gaining root you can get SuperCID and then you can get s-off. If all you want to do is remove some system apps, then you'll just need to unlock the bootloader, install a custom recovery, and install root.
Sent from my Evita
You don't need s-off to delete bloatware (pre-installed apps). Just use HTCDev.com to unlock the bootloader. Then install custom recovery, then either flash SU or a rooted ROM to get root.
The process to s-off is simple (see Facepalm method in the Original Android Development subforum). However, it requires SuperCID. Since the CID is protected on Sense 5, you will not be able to SuperCID (and therefore S-off).
But as already mentioned, you don't need S-off to root and delete bloatware.
I'm at a loss and somewhat confused.
I read in one place that I need to s-off to update my radio, but in order to do that I need super-cid.
so I'm trying to change my cid from ROGER001 to 11111111.
Now I'm reading that I can s-off without super-cid? All I'd like to do is update my radio and kernel so my phone stops losing signal and stops rebooting. I should also mention that I already went to htcdev and unlocked my bootloader.
What I see in fastboot:
TAMPERED
UNLOCKED
Evita PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.14.0000
RADIO-0.23a.32.09.29
OpenDSP-v31.1.0.45.0815
eMMC-boot
Viper Xl 4.2.0(amazing Rom btw)
HTC Sense 5.0
I have tried the script, it failed, manual method, that failed.
manual method gets me this result after I fastboot oem readcid(ok), fastboot oem writecid 11111111
... INFO elite_init_sd, SD card already power on
INFOsdhw_7xxx_open: id=0
INFO[SD_HW_ERR] SD: No device attached
INFO902910 902E20
FAILED (status read failed (No such file or directory))
I'd like to resolve this as my signal stops, and device reboots randomly.

Nope, wherever you read that, its completely incorrect.
It says right in the s-off method instructions, in big bold print that SuperCID is required: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155071
If you are having trouble with s-off, the other solution to random reboots on Sense 5 is to install the Beastmode kernel.

I actually started to type "as mentioned in a bazillion different places" after my Beastmode statement in the previous reply. But I decided to be nice!
I checked out this link again: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1952038
i still get an error, it fails on step 6 with message [-] Failed.
I'll give beastmode another shot, i've tried it before, no success.

The x-factor exploit fails since its looking for the AT&T CID. For other CIDs, you need to edit it manually using the hex edit method.
If you have trouble with installing Beastmode, I think some folks have had to install Beastmode 2.0 before installing 3.5.
After many attempts, boot loops beastmode reloaded 3.5 finally took.
So now I need to ask if I need s-off, i've done everything except upgrade my radio.
I'll only update my radio if the antenna drops keeps dropping out.
Well, radio went out, no reboots yet, I'll see what else I can try.

No it won't work, it's not for this phone. Only ever use guides specifically for this device or you could brick it. As I've already told you, you absolutely cannot root this device without unlocking the bootloader through htcdev first. I'm not sure why you're still searching for ways to do it, they do not exist. There's no point in coming here for advice if you don't even listen to the answers you're given.

Absolutely nowhere within this forum does it say you need s-off to root, because you don't. I've already told you that. I can't view that video for some reason but unless it specifically says it's for the Evita don't use it. Basically, just follow a 2.00.002 to 0.98.00000 downgrade guide involving using htcdev, such as this one, starting from the step where you push misc_version onto the device (you're already rooted and unlocked).
Obviously, if you don't want to S-OFF, you don't have to run Revolutionary.
You will need to use a RUU, you will need to re-lock your bootloader immediately before the RUU step. If you're not sure about how to choose a RUU, please see the relevant section of my guide in my signature.
If you want to sell the device as a 2.00.002 (you meanie! xD) then you can apply a newer RUU than for 0.98.0000, just don't put on ICS D:

You need to run misc_version as root, use su to gain root in your terminal for when you issue the command. You may need to interact with a permission request on the phone screen.
If you have an old adb on your computer and your rom is android 4.x, you might need to get a newer adb for it to work properly (some security stuff was changed).

[Q] How to update to sense 5?

Hi guys I think I know how to do it but any help or advise is always appreciated. This is what I know:
1.- I downloaded RUU from: http://dl3.htc.com/application/HTC_One_X_RUU_5.18.502.1.exe
2.- Phone Information: Android 4.1.1, HTC Sense 4+, Software Version 3.18.502.6 710RD, BaseBand 0.24p.32.09.06_10.130.32.34L Hboot version 2.14.
3.- Phone is not rooted, not boot loader unlocked, supercid'ed or nothing.
So as far as I know I just need to install HTC Sync for dab and fast boot drivers and after that connect phone with debug enabled, run RUU utility and wait for finish update?
Thanks in advance
If you ever want to unlock your bootloader do not take that update, it has patched the latest root exploit. I'd suggest unlocking your bootloader, installing TWRP recovery, installing Superuser or SuperSU to get root, getting s-off, all before considering running the RUU. If you don't do this before taking the update you may never be able to unlock the phone.
Once you've done all that you can leave the bootloader unlocked and still run the RUU. This way you can experience the update but already have the freedom of an unlocked bootloader.

Just follow the instruction on the following webpage under "Manual system update instructions":
http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-x-att/news/
HTC Sync is required, but fast boot drivers are not required, and I don't believe USB debugging is required either.
Once you run the RUU executable, it will walk you through step-by-step. Also be aware this will wipe the data partition (but not the "virtual SD" partition). So backup your data accordingly. I'd also backup what is on the virtual SD, just to be safe.
As timmaaa mentioned, the new RUU and OTA updates close the existing exploits, so if you have any desire to mod the phone in the future, its highly recommended to SuperCID, unlock bootloader, S-off before running the RUU.

So, what you both recommend is:
Follow timmaaa thread to get supercid and then unlock boot loader via HTC Dev and after that run rumrunner to get S-OFF?
If that's correct I have a question, can I run a RUU with S-OFF and Supercid? Do I have to relock bootloader in fastboot to run?

Yes that's right. You need to use the 3.18 root method to get SuperCID, then you can unlock your bootloader. Once you unlocked your bootloader you can install TWRP recovery which will allow you to install root. Once you have root you can get s-off.
The only way you can safely run an RUU with SuperCID is if you have s-off, if you run an RUU with SuperCID and s-on you'll brick your phone. You don't need to relock the bootloader.

I clearly stated: "if you have any desire to mod the phone in the future, its highly recommended to SuperCID, unlock bootloader, S-off before running the RUU"
So I'm not sure why you are asking what I recommend.
If you want further clarification: If you ever want to root, or install custom ROMs on the phone, then you should SuperCID, unlock the bootloader, S-off before running the RUU.
If you intend to keep the phone stock, and never root or install custom ROMs, then its okay to run the 5.18 RUU.

Yes, you can. And you should be able to do so with the bootloader unlocked.
Also, be aware that running past Jellybean RUUs with SuperCID and S-on will brick the phone. Its not known whether this still holds true for 5.18 RUU, but I'd assume it does, and never run the RUU with SuperCID and S-on. Simply get S-off first.
There isn't a reason not to get s off either. Super easy with rumrunner and from there use fastboot oem writecid

I was in a similar situation a few days ago. In my case i couldn't boot into Android or recovery mode and the device was stuck in a reboot loop. There's no need to run an RUU at this stage. Just downgrade to TWRP 2.6 and you'll be able to use the 'mount usb storage' feature again to copy a ROM zip across. Use the Kickdroid ROM and try Rumrunner s-off again.
The last thing you wanna do is change your CID back, then you'll be totally screwed. Just do what I said above and you should be fine.

I managed to relock, run the 2.2 RUU, re-unlock and root again to get an unbricked stock phone. Facepalm didn't work so I'll give kickdroid and rumrunner a go.
EDIT: Kickdroid seems to require a firmware higher than the one I have to work which requires s-off for me to get without bricking. know of any older roms that are unsecure and rumrunner will work on?
Just got frustrated and did the RUU again. but this time I managed to get s-off! don't know what I did different this time but thanks to both of you!
