Petition link is at the bottom of this post.
There was some discussion by Russ77 about starting a petition over in the bounty thread, so I went ahead and made one.
You may think this is a long shot or even a foolish attempt, but the bottom line is it could work. The likeliness of this working goes up with every signature. If you are reading this- SIGN! If this really picks up we may be able to change Verizon's policy all together! It takes maybe 3 seconds to sign so lets get this thing moving!
How Can You Help?
1. Sign the petition
2. Get Social- tweet it, facebook it, anything to spread awareness
3. Share this on other forums and websites
Remember, signing this is great but signing and sharing is even better.
Current Goal: 5,000

Acceptable Posts
- Discussion of how to promote petition, spread the word
- Discussion of how to improve the petition
- Letting us know you Signed&Shared
Do Not
- post negatively... "won't work" "they don't care" etc.
- respond to trolls

Now is this 100 signatures a maximum for this site? Or is this just what you set it to? No offense, but Samsung and Verizon are gonna scoff and laugh off only 100 signatures VS millions of users who use their devices/network.

An unlocked bootloader would allow us to compile and install AOSP based ROMs. These could be "rooted" by default like cyanogenmod or aokp.
Also, signed! Hope we can get a statement made.

Well I'm sure he might if the devs here on xda didn't feel it necessary to keep the update from everyone by only releasing their roms based off it, for an open source community the devs here sure like to act like selfish little internet fame seekers, true open source developers would have shared the update the moment they got their hands on it in unmodified form so everyone could take a stab at it, just goes to show you what xda is really based around

That's, uh, exactly what the Bonsai team did. The links have been removed by mods, but they released a stock deodexed EC05.
Curious as to why that was? What rules was it violating? They didn't say what rules just that it was closed until it complied...

I said this in the Inc forums, I don't know what's making him leave here to go to some dinky forum.
It's the new cool kid hang out, duh
Maybe he, like others, has grown tired of the attitudes here. Xda is not the end all be all of forums, nor is it the entire android community. Perhaps he felt it was more conductive to the development of his roms to move to a forum where they do not allow things to be named after drugs and heinous crimes while banning people over mentioning god.

I find it so ironic when ppl talked smack about one dev "taking his toys (roms) & leaving the playground" and then another dev left xda with a device that was obtained with the help of xda donations. Sure, once you buy something you can do what you want with it, but that is quite literally "taking your toys & leaving the playground". I would have been so pissed if I had contributed to that.

As I said, once you buy something it's yours to do what you want with. Yes, you can find the dev elsewhere, and one can only assume he will continue developing for a device that was at least partially funded with donation money. But it's the principle of it all. Donations to devs *after* a software project has been released is one thing. Donations to a dev with the stated purpose of obtaining a device -- and the implied expectation of developing for the donating user base -- is quite a different matter. Maybe I'm the only one who sees it this way, but if I had donated to help buy a phone for someone & they left that forum, I would feel used & abandoned, and proly a little resentful.
Just sayin'

This is a bit ridiculous. Where in the bounty thread did it say all ROMs/mods you develop for the Thunderbolt are to be exclusively released on XDA?
He is still working and if you are running a sense ROM right now then you are probably using at least one of his mods right now.
Just wait a bit and see what he has in store, and chill out about where the files will be released.

Generally when you advertise on a website for donations, you give that website the benefit of the doubt with your release/loyalty.
But no, just ask for donations through a proxy then leave the site.
So we need explicit written permission to modify any kind of open source now? When did the open source community get like this? My ROM thread was shut down due to the fact that I did not receive prior permission to use the ROM it was based off of. This would mean that each dev would need explicit permission from google to mod their initial code. Please remember that while our devs work hard, none of them produced the initial source. This means that we all have equal rights to the whole thing. When did the community get this way? I'm disappointed. Maybe it is time to move away from XDA...

Read the rules much:
12. Using the work of others.
If you are developing something that is based on the work of another Member, youMUST first seek their permission, and you must give credit to the member whose work you used. If adispute occurs about who developed / created a piece of work, first try to settle the matter by private message and NOT in open forum. If this fails then you may contact amoderator with clear evidence that the work was created by you.
Convincing evidence will result in copied work being removed. If there is no clear evidence you created the work then in the spirit of sharing all work will remain posted on the forums.
These rules apply to all software posted on XDA unless that software comes with alicense that waives these rules.

It is about respect to your fellow developers and community members, not ownership, or who was first, or any stupid stuff that goes along with it. Just respect. You know you didn't create something, so show some respect to the people who did, remember... without them you would have nothing to add to and call your own.
That is not what I'm being told. I'm told that it is about ownership by a mod.

Hello,
Today I'm going to try test three of the bootloader unlock (the test two didn't work, please delete it).
I'm not responsible if this hard-bricks your device, no don't blame me.
OK, so pm me please if you want to try it.
Only ONE person with 50+ posts or 10+ thanks may try it (to make sure your not motorola).
So post here first so that we can tell who will test it.
Good Luck,

Why not try on your own device? If I was working a zip flash to unlock the bootloader, I'd be trying on my own phone, rather than enlist others who may possibly brick as result. And, as DX2Trip asked in "test two", have the devs seen this that you're experimenting with?

There have been offers like this in the past. So please don't cast aspersions on the OP.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840550
The OPs offer is rather more generous in comparison.
Why do people always bother to see the post count and reps ? Its surely not a measure of how intelligent a person is.A person might be good but could have joined board late so he might be having less rep and posts. :/ We need to stop skeptical and embrace the help.
@OP : good luck with it.Some more details would be nice. All the best.
Edit : good example of what I wanted to say : http://i.imgur.com/v0H7z.jpg
The idea with the post count requirement was to make sure that motorola didn't create an account and volunteer to test it, and then go and analyze it, patch it if it worked, and then report back that it didn't either way.
Personally, I think that this may be unnecessary (although I have doubts about Moto's character, they definitely don't have the resources to be trolling dev forums in an effort to actively discourage development on year old hardware)
I would volunteer to test this, except that I fall just short of both requirements and I would also like to know what happened with the previous two tests before attempting this one (did they result in a brick?)
Again, as Fall of Enosis mentioned, the lack of replies by OP is a bit questionable. People asked legitimate questions in the first "test thread", and nothing was answered. Any good dev keeps up with his/her threads, and assures people with confidence by laying concerns to rest with some riposte. Not trying to cast any doubt on the OP's abilities, just a mention here of maybe taking a more proactive role in the threads he starts. My suggestion, to be taken or left alone...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
I am just going to assume that you will give us an over view of what you tried. We don't want people to get all pushy but it would be nice.
I'm also assuming the thread (x-files thread) a couple of days ago that ended in pm's was hashed out on back channels and this is a by product.
If I wrong well so be it but that's what happens when there is sooo little info.
Good luck.

$50 if it works and zilch if I brick my phone. I think I'll give it a pass.
I was talking to EdgeHood about how I will be getting a Nexus 4 soon and would love for him to develop for it. There is one problem however; he doesn't have a nexus 4. This is where we come in. Together we can get this awesome developer one of the best phones out there and possibly get some awesome ROMs too. I will be donating at least $50. This means the goal to reach is ~$350 (this includes taxes and shipping)
EdgeHood has been doing some phenomenal work on the Galaxy S III with his Vengeance ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2098437)
Donations can be made to Edge's PayPal here: https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_flow&SESSION=SBTbfErWle9DJ0akgBcw098iFuBccE2WIpgzPISWTPuVr5iNGAT07R0NnhS&dispatch=5885d80a13c0db1f8e263663d3faee8d0b7e678a25d883d0fa72c947f193f8fd
Come on guys we can do this!
Please post the amount of your donation so that I can keep track of it.
Thanks!!
You'd be better off doing this at the nexus 4 threads since generally we don't have the intention of going to that phone.

you should start a thread somewhere more appropriate if you actually want to do this.
I have a thread in the nexus 4 forum as well. I just figured users of his Vengeance ROM might want to donate and will be able to see this in the S III forums more easily.
This is first and hopefully a last. A bounty for a phone that isn't even the same phone that the section it is in.
On top of it the Nexus 4 isn't even available on the same carrier we are all on.
Building Roms on the Nexus 4 will not help the S3 forum at all.

seriously though, the above posters are right that you are not likely to get any love here for a phone the vast majority of us have no interest in and is on a different character. A for effort, F for execution
The OP wants S3 users to donate a phone so a dev can develop on his new phone that none of us own. Doesn't sound selfish at all.
I would love a Nexus 4. Anyone want to donate one to me.
Well at least the OP won't have to worry about updating the thread with amounts. Should be easy to keep track of zero.

I disagree, bounty thread can be great, like when we got the htc incredible 4g community a bounty s-off tester phone (within 3 hours mind you), which did play about 99% role in getting s-off (phone wise) from a developer standpoint it was unlimited.io team 100%. but without that phone, s-off may still not be on the htc inc4....
but this thread, poorly thought out.
Worst thread ever...
