[Q] touch response gone - but works when i freeze the phone to 24degC - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a strange issue on my nexus 5. Little long post - so please read at leisure.
Got my nexus 5 in November, the october batch. No issues till now and on 4.4.2.
Little background:
I am in Bangalore, India, where the noon temp probably hits 38C (100F) in May month.
I went on bike in tuesday at noon for couple of hours with nexus 5 in my pocket. That might have heated up the screen and insides.
I have antutu widget that shows the temperature, memory and also the cleanmaster.
I came back home, didnt touch the phone for a while. Later on went out in my car by 4PM. I observed that the touch response is gone. The screen is working and displayed time accurately, the notifications are coming, even getting calls. However, i cannot take the call since i cannot slide to answer.
By evening, i went to my office and observed it worked for a bit and then stops working all of sudden.
The temp shows 32C (for the processor i think) and it jams the screen.
I went into a cold conference room and stayed there for a bit where it was 23C room. The indicator showed 28C and touch works.
If the temp shows 30 it jams again.
I went to the local LG service center(Marathalli, Bangalore, India) last night and showed it to them. It seems they don't have stock of the screen to replace and asked me to call back. Today i checked its not yet come. Tomorrow might be possibility they would get and replace the touch screen.
However, if I continue with this technique of freezing the phone to cold temp and observe it works, slides, opens all tools. Once it is little heated up, it jams.
Now i observe white horizontal patches coming across the screen . If i turn off the screen and turn it on, its gone but comes back again.
Very strange indeed for me. Any insight on what is happening? I expect the LG nexus to be tested for high outdoor temperatures like in tropical India (40C - 110F).
It might have broken something internally like a small circuit being burnt and its probably working only in low temperatures. Still it is appalling.
Any thoughts and ideas?

We can assume that the digitizer is losing connection as a wire expands and contracts. LG should replace the screen for you free of charge, unless they come to the conclusion that it was damaged by the user.

display problem, screen garbled and/or scrolling non stop and/or blank

hi,
newbie in this forum and newbie in using a phone running an operating system. please help.
bought the phone in late June 2008, received it before the month ended, installed TomTom Navigator 6 on it and tested the various hotspot around my place, happy with it and stashed the phone on a safe place in the closet as T-Mobile don't have 3G service. then last week I decided to get an ATT plan (can't stand the iPhone 3G ad) so I can tasted the blazing HSDPA speed.
last week on Wednesday I use the phone as a GPS to get me to a hotel I'm staying near the White House. it got me there no problem. then the next day, the horror started. I was trying to plot a walking course to many of the nearby "stuff to see" and the phone just sits there saying that it can't get a valid GPS signal. then I tried to go to Google Maps using IE. the screen started scrolling, literally scrolling, then when it stopped, whatever usually on the top ended up in the middle of the screen, the bottom ended up on the top, and the screen was "split" in 2 with the edges staying dead center. so I thought, ah, this phone is just too tired, it ran out of memory (as all windows always does ignoring how much ram you put, at least in my experience), so I press the power button to let it do the light sleep. when I turned it back on, the phone seems to work the problem out and I tested it by going online.... guess what, the screen started scrolling again and even adding "I can play dead". the screen is not responding to anything (touch, tap, swipe, rotating the scroll wheel, pressing the buttons) beside the power button that seemed to turn the display off. when I turned it back on, the screen just gives off some light on the sides, but that's it, the screen is blank. taking out the battery doesn't even fix the "blank" screen thing. the device seemed to work out the problem after I left it unused for about 2-4 hours, but then it started again when I tried to do anything (all I ever do with my Touch Cruise is going online via wifi and/or att data plan, plus using the phone as GPS).
even after resetting the phone to a factory default doesn't help (did it this morning via a representative guidance). so I'm stumped. within a week, the phone basically broke, then how about another year? will it become bits and dust?
anyone can give me advise? one representative I talked to said that I can get a replacement for the phone but the last one I talked to said that HTC only have an option of repairing the phone but not replacing one.
thank you to all who reads.
Really weird.
Try to get replacement, if not possible, get it repaired.
If hard reset / factory default did not help... It does sound to me like malfunctioning device.
On the other hand... is it provider locked device or unlocked one?
I guess it's unlocked, but I'm bit confused since you mention both T-Mo and AT&T...
I do hope that there's original ROM on it...
For what it's worth, my XDA Orbit II has just developed the exact same fault. I tries soft and hard resets, re-flashed with 6.5 rom and then a 6.1 version, all to no avail. It goes through the boot sequence and asks for a screen calibration - if you ignore the scrolling screen and tap in the right places, the calibration is accepted (which makes me think it's not the digitizer. The screen itself seems to be fine - no missing pixels, cracks, - it displays everything it should only with a constant vertical scroll. If it had a vertical hold knob, I could fix the problem.
Really weird, it was working fine this morning and after sitting in its cradle for a couple of hours it is now like this.
Any ideas as to how I might cure the problem would be gratefully received.

[Q] Screen goes partially blank

Hey, so I have this weird problem with my G Flex 2.
I got it around 40 days ago from U.S. Cellular.
I have run into this problem about three times now, and from what I can remember it always happens when I have music playing. I tap the screen on to the lock screen then let it go to sleep or turn it off myself. When I wake it back up the screen is all black except for a few millimeters on the top, where I can see some display.(*note, this doesn't happen every time)
I am able to scroll through the display but no pop up menus. Since the battery is sealed off in the back of the phone I can't use that fix, holding the power button only brings up the menu option to turn off the screen which doesn't do me much good since I can't use the screen.
If I wait for 5 minutes or so the phone will right itself, but I don't want this to be a persisting problem. I'm not sure if this problem is tied to the music playing, it hasn't happened when it isn't playing, but I play music on my phone quite often. (note* I am playing the music from my phone, not streaming)
If you need more info I'll do my best to provide it. This is all I can think of right now.
Honestly, I don't expect anyone to have a fix yet since the phone is fairly recent and not as popular. I tried looking under G3 forums since the UI is pretty much identical, but I didn't find anything.
Sorry, my post is a little wordy.
I'd appreciate any help anyone can provide. Thanks
Yes, this has happened to me twice recently too. Once the screen was completely black except for a bright white line at the very bottom, but the phone was still responsive behind the dead screen. The other time there was a distorted/ghosty notification bar showing at the top but nothing else (like what you reported). Then the problem would resolve completely and spontaneously after resuming from sleep a few times. I have the Korean model (F510S) which was a gift so I'm stuck with it - no returns or warranty available.
bonebeatz1234 also posted about a similar problem. Seems like a hardware fault?
The replacement phone screen was fine i had a different issue of over heating and had to return it . I opted to get another device the note 4. Didn't wanna go that route bit had no choice i loved the design and ui of the flex 2. I wished lg would of just ditched the 810

Hi, I encountered same problem here.
Is anyone able to send me a screen shot or a video of this problem.
As I need to use this to prove the situation and claim warranty from the seller, however I didn't take a photo or something when the problem happened to me.
please sent to [email protected] if you have the photo or video and many thanks~
Just had this problem also had a g flex 2 for about 21 days now and it happened to me after a restart in the car with a pinkish line at the top and the phone was completely responsive even though the screen was blank
I think it might have to do with heat cause I held it by the ac vent while I was reading this board on my nexus and when I looked back at the phone it was working perfectly
But I swear during my time with the phone it heated up way more than this time and this time the phone wasn't even hot
I reset the phone like 3 times before I held it to the vent and it didn't help at all
Using the att variant with android 5.1.1
Have the same problem every now and then, found a recommendation on another website and in the instruction manual to reset the phone by holding down the power button and volume down button for about 10 seconds or to turn it off by holding down the same buttons for 20 seconds. I find what works better though is to just leave the phone alone and it corrects itself within about 5 minutes.
Having this same problem. Happens once every couple of weeks. Any updates on this?
I think that this is a heat problem....everytime i left my phone in the sun, it show me this strange error.
I'm not convinced its a heat issue. I looked at my battery chart the last time it happened and it was barely over 90 deg. It seems it happens to me when it is charging PLUS doing something like streaming music or GPS is on. I need to start taking notes. I should have done that before.
this have happened to twice too. weird anomaly.

Having the same random issue. Today it happened and reboot would not fix (it usually does) finally after about 30 minutes the screen came back to normal. I now disabled lock screen in case I need to get data off the phone from pc ? in the case that the issue becomes permanent.

although it's an old post, but worth to mention, that It can happen to all the LG Flex 2 models.
It is caused by a heat or inaccurate voltage. let me explain how it can happen:
heat - when you put the phone on the car's cradle under the car's front windows during a sunny day - it will happen.
voltage/heat - when you charge your phone and not using your original charger (eg chinese car chargers) - it will happen.
so what to do? I've noticed that putting the device over the cat's air conditioning , can reduce this to few minutes. also, if you can, mount your cradle over one of the air condition outlets and it will freeze your phone all the time

Touch screen issues when phone heats up

I have been using nilkin tempered glass since i bought my phone in december. The phone was running fine till recently. One day i was on a bike ride and was using my opo as gps navigator with a bike mount on my bike. I had used my phone for some 30 minutes as gps navigator.
After 30 minutes i took a break and removed the phone from the bike mount. I found my phone extremely hot. It must be around 70-80 degrees celcius range. ( my phone usually goes to 62-65 in cpu temp app while gaming or some heavy processes, so i know the phone was way hotter than usual by feeling). At that time the phone didnt show any touch sensitivity loss and i shut my phone down.
Since that day my phone is not same. Everytime i go into sun or outside or the phone remains in pocket for some time the phone gets warmer and i lose touch sensitivity. The phone doesnt unlock using swipes. Very difficult to type.
But as soon as the phone gets time to cool down or remains in AC for around 20 minutes it becomes like nothing happened. Its functions normally.
Today i removed my Nilkin tempered glass(its broke while removing so cant be put again). Now will be monitoring for few days to see if tempered glass was the culprit. If not i am going for warranty replacement.

This seems to be quite a common problem. It happens to me too - especially when I carry my OPO in my pocket.
Oneplus are aware of the problem and they almost had a fix (I think in the 15 and 16 of May CM12.1 nightly) but it drained the battery so it's been pulled for now. Hopefully they'll come back with a non-battery-draining fix soon.
See here for endless advice/comments/bickering.

Maybe we all must ask Synaptics for a fix, or ask for the status. OnePlus isn't communicating with us!

I have the same problem too... Though the fix has been removed from the CM12s, some of the custom rom (Resurrection remix) has included without the battery drain bug. I tried it and works smoothly. If you are rooted and can't wait for the official fix, you can change the rom and try.

Z3 Overheating

Hi,
I think I'm having an issue with my new Z3, it seems to overheat very easily. We have high temperatures here in Czech Republic currently, however this happens indoors also (not more than 26 °C).
Phone often gets over 60°C even if its not under heavy stress, i.e. just chatting over messenger and browsing web. When I try to start camera, it shuts itself off, beacuse the phone is too warm. I even got like 68°C when trying to take a picture!
Is this normal or should I have the phone replaced?
Thanks
I would say not normal, our temperatures in Toronto Canada range between 30/40 in summer and I've never had a over heating issue.
Have you tried factory reset?
Currently i'm in holiday and i'm always near the beach, under the sun my Z3 gets near 60-65 but when is like 8 pm and there's no sun anymore my phone is near 35
Same here.
~~~~
Jo, tady to samy, hruza. Zkus 4K video - ja muzu natacet asi tak... 20 vterin? Kdyz mam stesti. A neni moc horko....
Same here. Temperature gets to 60+ degrees while on 3G plus facebook/whatsapp. I will try resetting to stock and check if it fixes the problem.
I used to have this after upgrading to Lollipop.
Factory reset and wipe fixed all problems; overheating, battery issues, etc.
Over heating is always a problem for xperia Zx especially if you live in high temp country like mine
i have and use the original z, z1, z2, and now z3 and it all the same
even on standby the xperia will get hot if im outside under the sun
and using the camera will make it worse, the device will show over heating need to shutdown
using iphone 6 plus in the same condition is better but after dozen pic taken, it show the same error
the only cure for me is to power off the phone until the device no longer feel hot in your hand
but for now i usually use two phone if im planning to take many photo, one usually powered off and use the other one for camera, if its started to get hot then turn off phone and powered on the other phone lol
btw i heard z3+ and z4 overheat is worse so not planning to upgrade to z4, gonna wait until sony wake up and do major update to their line up
this just happened a few hours ago.
I've visited my grandma today in some places in Metro Jakarta Area, and boy Jakarta is as hot as the hell of the hell, when i go there, to her house, it actually looks green and cold, despite that afternoon it's sunny. but boy when i got out, it just burns my brain, head, and body inside and out.
So I kind of played some music in my car, but i turned off the music, and i got out of the car and go to the house, when i came in, wow, just wow, it's like i've just came in to hell, you know. Well in that time, i didn't feel that hot inside me, but my phone didn't feel the same as me...
you know, when i got out, i had my phone on aeroplane mode, and i don't do anything with my phone, after i came in, i just did light things with my z3, and after that, i played some games, and the phone started to became warm, well not that warm, but just a tad warm. and when i finished playing the game, i closed the game, and then lock my phone, and my phone seemed like it didn't like the environment and the air quality inside the house, so it became really really warm after that, i checked the temperature at cpuz and i saw the battery temperature, that is at 36 or so celsius, and i saw the thermal, most of them are like 40-50, and it is raising. and it just slowly getting hot until it is super super hot, i got panicked that i don't check the temperature and just turn off my phone to let it cool down.
Well my phone is new, and here, people are just ambitious when some person got a new phone, especially when it is a good one, like s6,z3+,iphone 6, or something else, especially z3 like mine, because sony users here are a lot but i rarely seen the users. so when i turn my phone off, my uncle was looking at my phone and started to tell me that he want to borrow it for a minute, so i gave it to him, i forgot to tell him that i turned off the phone because it experienced overheating that time, so i think he turned on the phone, i saw that fancy startup screen with that purple flow thingy, so i told him late, and asked some questions about the phone, and then i took the phone. I got panicked again because it's getting even hotter.
well that room is super super hot you know, but i'm one of the people who hate hot or warm environments, but i don't feel that hot, although it is warm, but some people thought that, that room is as hot as hell. so when i checked the phone, i saw that the startup screen is still running, it's unusual because it should display the lockscreen that time, so soon after that, the phone got lagged startup, and a few seconds later it got freezed, and then, like 5-8 seconds after that, the screen is pitch black, i thought the phone died, but it was restarting again, so i wait a couple of seconds, and it just did the same thing as before, so i'm worried, after like 5 times of doing the same thing, i asked my sister if i need a pin for force reset the phone with the button inside the microsd/sim slot. And then the screen turned off with 3 times vibrate, that was my first overheating and my first time of reseting a phone like that on my z3,
Oh yes i just remember, the phone is at 13% that time before the first turn off. And continuing on, when it already cooled down, i pressed the power button to turn on the phone, and again, that thing happened again, and it overheats again, i got really worried, so i let it cool down again, and then i tried to turn it on again, but did the same thing, so i turned off the phone again with the same method, and take my charger inside my car, and charge my phone, after that, it charges at 9% mark, i let it charge for some minutes and then, i turn on the phone again and just pray , then finally, the phone turned on without an issue, when i tested everything inside and outside it, everything seems normal.
that is creepy you all know? hahaha
btw, i'm not really in jakarta, i'm in sawangan, depok, it's like jakarta's sub city/ inside Jakarta metro area. but both are as hot as hell.
edit : oh yes, it's not just me, my mom's gnote 8, my sister's iphone 5s, and even my blackberry curve 8520 did the same. but my z3 is like, far severe one
but other than that, my phone didn't feel and seem as bad as you are, i just got like warm but not that much heat on mine when trying the same thing with the same condition as you are.
Mi4i - screen died after replacement
My screen shattered rendering the phone unusable (image was fine, but the touch was partially off). So I ordered a replacement and replaced it. At first when I booted the phone with new screen installed, the image was glitching and freezing after a few seconds until I turned the screen off and on. I disconnected the battery a few times during the tests and sometimes the image would not show at all. Anyway, I thought this is the best I can get, I just needed the phone to be usable, so I placed the screws back in and put on the case. The display become kind of more stable - there was still a tiny bit of noise, but it didn't freeze. I set the alarm and went to sleep. After maybe 3 hours the alarm went off, I postponed it for an hour. It was the last time the display worked. Now reconnecting the battery or any other component doesn't help anymore.
What could be the cause? Is the screen permanently dead now?
I doubt this could be a software issue, is that even possible?
Why would it work for a few hours and then just stop - maybe it was just faulty and I should demand a refund?
I think it is more likely to be a hardware issue. Contact service center or from where you got replacement.
Is there anything I could try doing myself? Any clues? If not, then I'll just demand a refund. I don't think I damaged the screen in any way, it was working for a couple of hours and then just stopped.
maybe the parts is broke. or flexible not installe well
