[Q] Which stock android rom? - HTC One S

Hi haven't installed a rom on a phone in ages and looking to give my phone a bit of a facelift, currently rooted on 4.22 stock HTC with hboot 2.15 and stock kernel/pretty much everything else except tampered unlocked bootloader and the root. Which STABLE rom like cm or even cm would you recommend. Also a big reason I didn't bother going for a different rom was that the facebook htc contact sync to get numbers as well as pictures etc is great so how can I get this on a more holo based rom, or will I have to go for a sense based one. Lastly do I need to upgrade hboot and/or kernel?

ICS Pre-Upgrade Question

Hi everyone!! Have a question to ask and was wondering if anyone could help.
Right so this my situation:
I own a HTC Sensation XE, I have S-OFF, Rooted and SuperCID.
So basically i'm all set for custom roms (gingerbread ones anyway).
I have also installed a custom rom (Pyramid3D v8.3.0 - gingerbread based).
Now I am considering upgrading and installing a ICS based custom rom, however it appears that in order to use the ICS based roms, I have to flash new firmware.
Now I have no problem with doing that, I understand how to do that.
My question is:
If I upgrade the firmware and install an ICS based custom rom, but for whatever reason I do not like it, can I then simple downgrade back to a gingerbread rom?
Will a gingerbread rom work fine with the newer firmware?
Do I have to downgrade the firmware back?
Is there any disadvantage to using the newer firmware on gingerbread if possible?
Is the downgrade as simple as installing any other rom? - if that possible
Thanks in advance for help you guys can give!! Appreciate it!!

Only if you have a GB compatible firmware installed.

Depends, 1.23 (from 3.12) should work fine. 1.27 (from 3.24) won't.

You'll need HBOOT 1.23 or 1.17 to boot GB ROMs. I used 1.23 for a while with ICS and CM7. I've only recently gone to the unlocked 1.27 F/W, seems more stable on ICS. I think I noticed a battery life benefit with CM7 & 1.23, so an advantage.

You need to do it via the PG58IMG.zip method rather than recovery.

Short answers to your questions:
Yes - but you need to downgrade the firmware
No
Yes
You can't use new firmware with Gingerbread
Yes
Detailed stuff can be found in this most helpful post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1480061
I think you'll find it worthwhile to move to ICS. Good luck.
edit: Doh! Missed it by that much....

+1 on the move to ICS.
My question is:
If I upgrade the firmware and install an ICS based custom rom, but for whatever reason I do not like it, can I then simple downgrade back to a gingerbread rom?
Only if you have a GB compatible firmware installed.
So if I was to install 3.24 then GB roms most likely wouldn't work?
Do I have to downgrade the firmware back?

You'll need HBOOT 1.23 or 1.17 to boot GB ROMs. I used 1.23 for a while with ICS and CM7. I've only recently gone to the unlocked 1.27 F/W, seems more stable on ICS.
So 1.23 is the best bet if I want to "try" ICS and then can go back if I choose
Another question which I also have then is:
Some ICS roms say that they require firmware 3.24. To clarify, If I install this firmware and an ICS rom, there will be no way for me then install most GB roms (broadly speaking).

You can reflash an earlier F/W so go back to 1.17, as always if it screws up it screws up. It's the sort of thing I tried to avoid where possible, but sometimes is necessary.
One point though, when you flash 1.23 or 1.27 you'll get a new Radio. If you regress the F/W to 1.17 you'll need to flash a compatible Radio as well.
You "should" be able to try before you buy ICS on 1.23 and also go back to GB. That said, I've found my current combo (VI 3.0.5b7 and 1.27.1100) more stable than an earlier version of the ROM was on 1.23.

NO GB on this F/W

ics reception problem

I am using ICS for 3 days.the reception is weeker than GB.my rom revolution 6.
who else have this problem ?
specially official ICS .do you have reception problem with offisial rom ?
it look likes its only my problem.so whay should I do for this problem ? any solution ?
Oftentimes the radio has a big factor on reception. If you flashed a new firmware package (which you undoubtedly did if you're running ICS now...) then chances are your radio file was overwritten. I would suggest digging through Google to find a radio file optimized for your carrier FOR ICS. You also want to make sure it only has a replacement radio and nothing else tagging along with it, otherwise you may have to reflash your ROM afterwards. Good luck to you!
thanks for reply.
what If I install ICS OTA ROM ? Do I need to reinstall radio ?
next question theres is a ICS untoucked rom in revolution hd forum. Is this rom exactly htcs rom ?
or could you please send me a link of official htc ics rom ?
and could you please tell me cid of one of countries that they got ics already.
thanks

The Radio comes with a firmware package as opposed to a ROM, so just flashing a ROM won't fix that.
Android Revolution HD is a very nice ROM, if you like the Sense UI and don't want to go for AOSP like OpenSensation/CyanogenMod 9 then ARHD is your best choice. The main difference is it gives you the latest version of everything as well as many tweaks and enhancements for it to run smoother. I don't have any links for plain unmodified HTC update packages.
As for the CID, you want to flash a Radio/Firmware based on the CID you have. The only exception is if you are SuperCID, but you still want to flash the one that matches YOUR carrier. Radios are all different. If you used Orange UK for example and I gave you a Radio for T-Mobile US it wouldn't help at all.

Vanilla htc1x rom ... what about sOFF?

Hi all,
I currently have the nexus one and I love the vanilla experience (though MiUi is pretty decent too). I have been running ICS on it but it still feels kinda laggy.
I am considering upgrading to the 1x, but I want to be sure that I can root it, enable tethering, and run a vanilla rom rather than the HTC sense junk. I see too many roms in the development page (I think the organization of such topics is kinda a problem but thats a question for another post), and want to know if there are any that offer a stable vanilla ICS or JB experience.
Also, I know that gaining S-Off is still in a development stage for this phone, but is it necessary? Can we flash custom roms without that?
if you're talking about the AT&T version of the One X(L) make sure the one you get is running 1.85 firmware or lower. 2.20 is unrootable and without root we can't unlock the bootloader either.
S-off isn't needed right now except to unlock the 2.20 firmware.
There are flavors of AOSP for both ICS and Jellybean. ICS versions of AOKP and CM9 are both VERY good since we have source code for the kernel for android 4.03 although it is incomplete because we still don't have drivers for the camera.

In setting, where does it say about Base 2.3x etc?

I'm new the phone and had spent a lot of time reading, still not understand yet. Hope some can guide me. I have US T-Mobile carrier HTC One S and currently rooted and unlocked BL. What I don't get is, how do I know what is my Base version or where to look for in setting? I know my radio since I flashed the EU ration as listed on my sig but I did not flash RUU.exe.
Setting-about-software information-more
T-MobileUS HTC One S
Oh.. I'm using Unofficial AOKP JellyBean and there's no Software Info under setting--about.
not sure what you want
it should say 4.1.1 and your radio version
you won't see 2.31 etc
my question is how i know if i'm 2.31 etc? does it go by what radio version you flash?
for cm10 i believe so

Stock 4.1.1 with Sense 5 for S-On One S4, Possible?

I'm new here and just obtained a One S4, I am S-On and won't tamper with that either. I have rooted and unlocked the bootloader through HTC Dev.
I'm using the stock 4.1.1, i have always been a fan of Sense 5 so looking for a stock based or close to stock custom rom with sense 5. Any suggestions? The bloatware is way too much on stock so if anyone can suggest a rom which is as stable as stock but has sense 5?
Also i have read if i'm S-On i have to flash the boot.img first? what's up with that?
Your help would be really appreciated, thanks
