[Q] Stock Rom + Partitions

First of all,i am really happy to announce (for those who came across with my desperate threads trying to solve my battery drain over 3G network issue) that flashing XXJPU Rom + Removing the partitions (swap + external extra storage) of my SD Card solved my problem. Battery is not draining anymore,and everything is working just fine with the stock rom.
The question is : Can i partition my SD Card again (to add internal storage,since i´ve came across the damn "Internal Storage is Nearly Full" message) ?
If yes,will i have to reflash the rom or , do anything else then just creating the partition using the Minitool software ?

No need to make a new partition, extend the current one by minitool/gparted

I have o only one big partition used to store normal content. I need to make a new one to use as a extra internal storage space.. So i do need to partition it, all i need to know is if it will work and if i will have to do something else after partitioning it

If you create a partition on your SD Card as EXT2 ( i guess its EXT2 ) ,your OS will use it as internal storage.
Doing this,will solve the low internal storage issue.
I Just dont know if it works on stock roms,it does work on Kyrillos, inDroid, Sumee etc.

@OP i though u already had one partition when you said partition again
if your sd is as it is(just one partition)
then do this
flash g3mod
reboot into recovery
and partition
its the fastest way to get a partitio
then you can use an app2sd/data2sd script (system/etc/init.d)
Or if you have a card reader
use minitool/gparted to partition
shrink the existing one and make a new partiton(ext4)
and yea backup ur data, just in case!

I will use minitool since i know how to use it.
After creating a EXT4 Partition,what will i need to actually tell my OS to use it as internal storage ?
Will i need to reflash rom ? Run any script (like Data2SD) ?
Also, is the Kernel or the Rom that actually recognizes the partitions and use them ?

Hmm.
ext4 would be a bit better but ext2 is also ok
now keep an a2sd script in /system/etc/init.d
there is a thread in dev section by kyrillos with the script and instructions, use it
or flash a custom rom which already has it
and yes you need a kernel with init.d support, but every custom kernel has that feature(cf-root,fugumod,g3mod,simplicity,etc.)

use a custom room like indroid, kyrillos etc & enjoy after partition, set the restore location as "internal" in the titanium setting before restoring apps

Help how to recover all files from sd after partion!

hello, i was about to flash a new rom on my hd 2 and i forgot that i put a wrong sd, and i partioned my sd and now i lost everything, is there a way to recover all my files? i havent done anything to the sd since i partioned it!
edit: i did this in CWM recovery

Try google this testdisk-6.12-WIP. It can restore partition along with files in it. Or try some data recovery software,mostly they works

i did the partion on the phone, i heared thats it possible to recover them if i havent written any new files

Try a program like Recurva I'm not sure if it works on flash memory though.

That is only applicable for magnetic disks. And also not if you deleted the whole damned partition, created it, and reformatted it again.
That alone is worse than writing a lot of files.
Consider your files lost. Next time back them up to somewhere.

I would like to suggest you that go for Stellar Data Recovery Services & Software.

For my personal experience, when I had to recover files from hard disks or flash memory (usb key/SD), my best choice is GetDataBack (you will need FAT edition, not NTFS).
Just insert your sd in a card reader and follow the step by step tutorial. Do not attempt to reformat your card if your PC doesn't see that, the app will look into it at a lower level...
btw, a 100% recovery isn't always guaranteed, as you know, [email protected]!# happens

Yes, GetDataBack is a great program, try it instead of Stellar Data Recovery. But reformat card as said. Works fine for me.

[GUIDE] Titanium Backup Move app data 2 sd

Hi guys,
Titanium backup is a great root tool. Apart from creating and restoring backups Titanium Backup can also move app data to sd.
[ ROOT REQUIRED ]
I tried it and faced a few problems.
"NO DATA 2 SD DIRECTORY DETECTED"
After searching for answers and not getting any i decided to create a answer my self.
So this is a step by step method to move app data to sd using Titanium Backup
(BASICALLY FOR NOOBS BUT OTHERS CAN PARTICIPATE TOO)..
1. Root your device following the tutorial for your device
2. Create 2 Ext Partition (if you have already done so please move to no. 3)
a. switch of your device and take out your sd card.
b. use a card reader to plug it in your pc ( DO NOT USE YOUR DEVICE TO ACCESS THE CARD)
c. download Mini Tool Partition Wizard
d. create to ext 2 or 3 or 4 partition..Make sure the partition are primary and not logical and the partition size b/w 1GB to 2GB
e. After partitioning insert your card in the device and reboot the device.
3. Download Titanium Backup
4. Open Titanium Backup and open the Backup and Restore Tab.
5. select a SINGLE APP and long press.
6. Select "move app data to sd". A popup will open asking to create a data 2 sd directory.
7. Select Yes.
8. Batch select all apps and move app data to sd.
9. Viola see how your internal memory jumps up..
10. Have fun :good:
PS- If anybody finds any error in the guide then please tell me.

I don't use link2sd..I use a2sdgui..but with whatever knowledge I have I don't think that should affect titanium backup..try reinstalling titanium backup and wiping dalvik cache...
I will try to find an answer as soon a possible..:thumbup:
Try long pressing on a user app like a game or something..

sorted it out..
the answer was actually in the titanium backup website in the faq page !
for any1 with the same prob(for CM& based roms):
had to create a folder called "app" in the sd-ext partition
then relaunch titanium backup and then u see the sd-ext part in the home screen of titanium.
in backup/restore long click, as nilot said, long press on an app, now theres an option to move app data to sd !
select and it asks you if you want to create a /data2 folder ! do that, and thats it!

prior to rooting my phone I was advised to download Titanium backup pro and i bought it through my pc and paid through google wallet and it was sent to my cell. I can see it on my phone when I go into settings and manage apps but there is no icon. I was going to back up my system before I rooted, just incase anything happened but now I m at a loss.... anybody?

I think u can download the pro version for free as you have paid already..and titanium backup is a root only app..root permissions are required..

The pro version just unlocks additional functionality in the free version. You have to install the free version as well as the pro version.
EDIT: Anyway, I also can't find the option to move app data to SD. I guess I'd need to create the "apps" folder on my sd-ext partition (although my SD card's 2nd partition is FAT32, would that stop it working?). This would be great if I could figure out how to do it though.

I think titanium backup needs ext partition..never tried using fat32 partition..

I think you're right, I am using FAT32 because I use Link2SD on stock ROM, and my stock ROM doesn't support ext partitions. It'd be a bit much hassle for me to change things just for this, I'll leave it as it is for now.

i think 2nd partition needs to be ext3 or ext4. theres a guide in this forum how to do that. you need a pc with an sd card reader tho.
after that just follow the steps on this thread

How to add the APP folder
Ok ,, this sounds so noobish, but how can I add the folder 'app' to my 2nd partition of my SD card (which is formatted to EXT4) ...
Can't read the EXT4 folder on the SD card when plugged into the PC, and I've tried using a browser on the phone, but can't see the option where to view the EXT4 partition either ?!
EDIT: Nevermind, changed to a different ROM and S2EXT works fine now

I used NextApp's FX program with the Root Module installed (I'm sure Root Explorer would also work). I then used the "Filesystem Manager" tool and navigated all the way to the bottom looking for "Other Filesystems". I found one named "/data/sdext2" which appears to be my ext2 partition.
I think this may be my problem because I still cannot see the external partition even after adding the "app" folder. I did some digging in TB's FAQ and found the mentioned requirements for Data2SD:

/system/sd/ (“classic” sd-ext)
/sd-ext/ (“Cyanogen” sd-ext)

So for Data2SD to work, you’ll need to ensure that your ext2/3/4 partition is mounted at one of these locations. Then create an “app” directory at that location in case it doesn’t exist. Once it’s done, you’ll see a free space gauge for it in the Titanium Backup welcome screen, and you can then long-click on an app in the list and hit the “Move app data to SD” button. First, Titanium Backup will look for existing symbolic links in /data/data/ and attempt to re-use the same target location, if it lies within the ext2/3/4 partition.
If it finds no existing (or no suitable) destination, it will propose to create a “data2″ folder within the ext2/3/4 partition, and will then move the app’s data inside it.
So by default, you’ll get: /data/data/com.x.y => /system/sd/data2/com.x.y (in the “classic” sd-ext case).

I'm guessing that because my partition appears to be mounted at "/data/sdext2" instead of "/data/sd", that this is why TB cannot see it. However, as far as I'm aware, this was created by Link2SD without any intervention on my part. Does anyone know how I might be able to go about changing this? Or could I somehow put in a link to it elsewhere?

It seems I have the same problem. I tried to rename the directory using Root Browser Lite (the only free root file manager I was able to find) from "/data/sdext2" to "/data/sd" but the operation failed (I'm not sure but probably the first time I partitioned my SD I called the Ext2 partition labelling it sdext2).
Thanks in advance to anybody who can help me with this issue!

Did you try rebooting the phone or recreating the links after you renamed it?
I've emailed both the developer of Link2SD and support for Titanium Backup. I haven't heard back from anyone at Titanium Backup yet, but the developer of Link2SD was rather informative. He said that the main reason this isn't yet supported is because app private data must maintain the ownership data from the app that it goes to because of the way that Android sandboxes apps. This isn't possible on FAT/FAT32 partitions. Only ext2/3/4 supports it. This is probably why it only works for these filesystems with Titanium Backup.

I created a primary ext3 partition that is 1.2GB. I do not have the option to move app to sd or move app data to sd, any idea why?
Edit: I can't locate the ext3 partition via root explorer...does gingerbread not support apps2sd? or is my issue due to the fact that this is a stock GB ROM?

yeah all the steps are correct just don't restore backup
you even will not need to wipe anything just backup the data of the sdcard

if you use android to mount your sdcard ext partition will not show up but if you will use a card reader that ext partition will be mounted

why can't I restore? so sad!!!! does that mean I have to install all my apps again?

you can't restore because no wiping is needed and for a backup purpose use titanium backup

Titan backup doesn't see ext SD card.

You actually do not need to store them on the external sd. Titanium stores the backups by default on the root directory of the internal sd card (memory) and are safe from being wiped when wiping data/resetting to flash a rom. People do choose to change that location to the external for swapping backup to a different phone and for extra security in case of a brick or some other issue that could arise, but it is not required to do for general flashing of different roms.
If you do want to change the location, go into preferences and select storage location, the back button will navigate to different locations available. Choose external sd and make your batch backup..that's it. If you already made a backup on your internal before switching to external, you'll need to use a file explorer (I like ES, but others are just fine too) to move the entire Titanium folder to the external card. Then go back into preferences and be sure to select the titanium folder you just moved as the backup location.

NONONO DO NOT DO THIS!!!
Well you can if you don't then move your backups to your ext or a computer.
I believe TWRP wipes the WHOLE internal card when doing a factory reset as the Samsung Recovery does. ClockworkMod I believe is the only one that doesn't.
You probably need to format your 32gb ext to Fat32 instead of exFat that it comes with. See HERE It doesn't hurt to do this either way, unless you plan on putting files that are larger than 4gb each onto your card.

I don't use twrp, I use cwm with zero titanium issues on internal card. I find it unlikely that twrp would wipe the entire root directory bank of files because that would also wipe its own file including backups made. I'd like some verification on this, though I don't not use twrp, nor have seen any reference to not using the default location in any of titaniums guides.

Quick note: I hate speculation. Please someone else chime in on some verification so that the op is getting accurate correct information.
My directions above ARE 100% correct if using cwm as your recovery. Titanium makes no mention or warning that you should change titaniums built in default storage location based on various recovery options. But again, I do not have any intimate knowledge of the workings of twrp, but certainly want to know so that my help is verifiable and accurate in the future.

Okay, if TWRP CANNOT wipe the internal card cuz of it's own files, then how the hell does the stock version do the same thing???
DUH!!! recovery is on a DIFFERENT partition! Know your phone!

Let's put this into basics. Do you know for a fact that twrp will erase a titanium backup stored in the default titanium storage location on the internal card, or do you need to change the storage location to external when using twrp recovery risk losing the backups?
All I got from you is telling the op to not use titaniums default location based on a speculation you had on twrps possibility to wipe it without any definitive info to back it.
My cwm based info is un-arguably accurate. So let's not confuse the original op's question here, and be sure your not rewriting the book on titanium.

First make sure your SD Card is formatted correctly (as FAT32, not NTFS)
Then make sure your TB is actually backing up to that drive. Meaning, go into a file explorer and make sure that the Titanium files are there.
If those don't work, try using a different Recovery.

I would gladly read any info I could on the android system. I admit I don't "know" my phone. I haven't been able to find info to get intimate knowledge of my phone. I just assumed the entire phone was wiped when I told it to in recovery. I can see where the storage drive can get rather cluttered over time then. Is there a way to do a full wipe to kinda clean things up in the future?
I'm going to have to buy the book android for dummies.
My mem card is stock 32gigs sandisk class 10. Straight out the package. The phone reads it. File manager sees it. Idk if I would need files greater than 4gigs. Didn't realize there was issues with the 32. Thought it was just the 64. That's why I got the 32 and not the 64.

Your correct, the 32 should have no issues, the problems come along with the 64's. My SanDisk 32 class ten has no problems with files over 4 gig. Appreciate the support!

I don't know for a fact that TWRP will wipe everything or not... I was meaning that the OP should copy his backups to his ext manually or to a computer JUST IN CASE. I thought I had read that the TWRP Factory reset/wipe did the same thing as the Stock's Factory Reset/wipe(Which erases ALL app data from the internal SD including TB's backups!

I would gladly read any info I could on the android system. I admit I don't "know" my phone. I haven't been able to find info to get intimate knowledge of my phone. I just assumed the entire phone was wiped when I told it to in recovery. I can see where the storage drive can get rather cluttered over time then. Is there a way to do a full wipe to kinda clean things up in the future?

@OP: The problem with the 64gb cards that I was referring to is their format. I know for a fact that 64gb cards are exFAT. I "think" that 32gb cards are doing the same thing. I dunno for sure. The problem with these cards is that the phone will read them, any file explorer will read them, but Recovery's have an issue reading them. Along with AOSP ROM's from what I've been told(I dunno for sure because I've always fixed my cards before going to AOSP).
If you dont see yourself using any files over 4gb(which usually are just bluray rips) then you might as well just format your card to FAT32 just to be safe. Go to and follow the GUI option of this THREAD. This is how I did my card and it's caused me no problems. Like I said the only downfall to formatting it this way won't allow you to use files that are over 4gb in size.
Now, there has been other problems with 64gb cards as far as stability. This is all speculative since I have not experienced it first hand, but I guess a lot of people were having their cards fail period. Meaning they were un-readable in any format on any device. Like I said, I have not experienced this.

I definitely would like to know more, especially about whether twrp does a full format. And just so I know, for cwm to erase root files, you would have to choose the format system option as opposed to wipe data/factory reset (which does not erase those files)?

TWRP does not wipe /data/media which is the default save location for titanium, this location is the main directory of your internal storage. I have used TWRP on my SGS3 and my transformer prime and it has never erased this directory when doing a factory reset.
