I have yet to see a parking location card pop up to remind me where I park. I have Google Now version 3.4. Location reporting is on. I've set transportation mode to Driving. Is this service not available in Canada?
Mods: Sorry if this is not appropriate here but I've done a search and really don't know where to ask this question. Move it if you need to. Thanks.
I thought you had to tell google after your parked to remind you where you parked not sure though

I think it's a 'phased' roll-out. My wife's had this feature for a couple of weeks, mine just magically turned on yesterday without me doing anything or changing any settings. My wife always gets the cool features before I do, for some reason, and she couldn't really care less
It's just appeared for me since yesterday. I never did anything to activate it, the card just appears with a mini-map

I was hoping that I would see it today, since two of you said it showed up yesterday. Nothng still. I guess it's not a big deal. I wouldn't really use it very often but was just wondering why I don't see it.

Ive had it for about a week. Its automatic. Its kinda annoying actually because now Google Search uses a lot more battery
I've seen it three times but it certainly doesn't work every day for me. I can see it out of the window so I should manage to find it today
I don't see it anymore
I used to see it about 20 days back but after that....gone ...i have the latest google search, google play services and location is on battery saving mode...with location reporting and history on.....i want to get it back...tried many things like wiping data for google search, reinstalling google search...no use..please suggest

I feel ya bro...
On the other hand.. when I was on holidays in London I had a lot more cool suggestions and cards showing up comparing to home (Portugal)... but when I travel sometimes I get pictures of the places nearby, often with my own pictures LOL
Located in Canada, I get it every time I park my car, except at home (seems pretty obvious now that I think about it). I don't think I did anything special other than to say 'yes, tell me where I parked', and even then, I don't specifically remember even doing that.
I'm in Australia and it just randomly showed up 2 weeks ago for me.. I didn't even know that Google Now had a "where you parked" card until it showed up in G. Now... my inner conspiracist feels slightly uncomfortable with this constant tracking

Maybe it's because I upgraded from an ancient AT&T Tilt (not Tilt II!) and this phone is just so much better that I don't notice the flaws.
But every post on here where people mention some bug or another and Mine does not have said bug.
My GPS works, even in the house (which I thought was not possible, because the GPS signal isn't supposed to go through walls)
My Battery lasts from 9:30 am until midnight with downloads, music, calls, video, browsing, and facebook. I have all of the default battery saving options.
My accelerometer/gyro work perfectly.
Please tell me I'm not the only one, because I am so happy with this phone, and it would be a shame if so many people where having problems that it became a flop.
Just my take on it. It is a new phone so there is still a lot of "unknown" about the phone. Also, if you go to any kind of forum like this you usually see a lot of issue/help threads rather than praise threads. Its just the way it is.
I got mine yesterday.. and love the hell out of it.. No problems at all so far, and have not been able to put it down. hahaha
Mine is great
I love my phone and have had no problems at all. and I love swpe, I almost forgot how to type

I did have a GPS problem though, it wouldnt lock on in like 15 minutes, but I changed the settings and I get a lock pretty fast now.
Lag? None. Touchwiz? Decent, and less choppy than launcherpro!
Phone is real good.
They sold almost a million Galaxy S devices before even launching in the states, and the only 'common' problem I have seen that is not obviously software is the GPS issues. But it seems like most can change around a few settings and be fine.
Most if not all of my issues are because I do not know android. Once one or two software updates come out (or cooks make some nice custom roms with bug fixes) most if not all problems I think will vanish.
Nope
No problems, except for the GPS issue. But I live in NYC, and the buildings have always been an issue when trying to connect to the satellites with any device. Anyway, with that said, no issues with the phone/settings/performance etc. at all.

I'll one-up you, I unplug my phone at 6:30 AM when I am about to leave for work and didn't plug it in until it started complaining at me 28 hours later. Thats pretty darn good given the screen size and the fact that I was using wifi and 3G throughout the day.
Coming from a Iphone 3g.
Got my Captivate on Tuesday. Rooted it, took off the junk. Mine is running great even with no new launcher and live backround. GPS works great too.
No bugs here and phone is way faster then any other phone I have ever used.
Mine is running great too. Maybe it's because I'm not a perfectionist, but I love my phone after removing touchwiz it's even faster too.
So far, so good. Any "issues" can be traced back to my ignorance of an Android-based phone, but being a persistent sort I've either figured out the answers myself or by trolling forums. I would venture a guess that most listed problems relate to:
1. Unrealistic expectations that this new phone should behave the same way, or very similar to an older phone, e.g., number of bars should equal previous phone's number of bars and stuff like that.
2. The results of newbies futzing within the depths of the phone without recognizing the potential consequences of their actions should they screw up.
3. Glitches or wishes that will be addressed in updates.
4. Real problems that can be rectified by a swap within the 30 days.
5. Imagined problems that can be rectified by a reality check.
...and so on.
In any event, I have high expectations and this phone has certainly come close to meeting them.

I've had my phone for exactly 1 week, and after reading all the horror stories of people experiencing the random shut offs, I thought I was lucky up until now. I love this phone a lot despite the obvious GPS issues. Does anyone have any idea on what may be causing this? Hardware or Software issue?
I would hate to exchange it for another with AT&T since I've become so attached to it.
My phone randomly shut down within the first couple of days I had it too. However, it doesn't happen anymore.
I'm still not exactly sure what caused it. Here is what I can remember having differently before and now:
- Used the Grass live wallpaper; now, I'm using a static wallpaper
- Had a corporate exchange account synced; now, only syncing a Google account
And of course, I've been charing the phone more ever since I got it, so maybe the battery needs to "learn" something so that it doesn't automatically shut down?

thanks kevrocks, how long have you had your captivate btw?
There are a few threads here, including mine with the "Let's compare apps" theory http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=763956. No on has been able to figure it out. However, in my observation, I had my Use GPS Satellites turned off while I was away on vacation in Europe. In the 7 days I was away, my phone never turned off on me. That was last week. This week, it still hasn't turned off (knock on wood). Could that be the culprit?
Do your own test. Uncheck the "Use GPS Satellites" in the Location and Security menu. Check it when using Maps or Navigation but don't forget to Uncheck it when not in use. Observe for a week and see if you get the same results as I did.
Good luck.

It's been 1.5 weeks so far.
Mine did this also, when i called Samsung they explained to me that they don't know what the problem is that is causing this issue and that some users are experiecning it. They told me that I would need to send the phone in with Phone, Bat, and Bat Charger for a complete diagnostic overview. Unwilling to do this I just returned the phone for a different one. I'm thinking that if it happens it hardware and you are best off getting a replacement rather then messing with it.

Funny you mention location. I flashed jh2, latest sre, and tats lag fix yesterday. I was actually turning on my locations and my phone shutdown. I figured it was the oc kernel.
Had other random reboots/shutdowns after. Could have been the flash. Just fyi'ing.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
mine shut off for the first time yesterday, this is my second, first returned for a loose battery cover and speaker issue. I'm hoping the phone doesnt continue to shut off. Ive spoken to ATT, and i'm kinda screwed right now if it ends up being a hardware issue with the phone. i'm past my 30 days.
Oh, I also performed a factory data reset, and I haven't gotten any random shutdowns ever since.
I also spoke with Samsung technical support, and the rep suggested to do a soft reset. This is where you remove the battery, clean the gold contacts on the phone and battery, and then reinsert the battery.
I've had mine since the first Thursday it was out. For the first week or two, it shut down about once a day. After that, I've never had a random shut down. Don't know why, I've played around with settings and apps since day one back and forth, so I don't believe its any certain setting or app. Maybe a part of the phone or build getting adjusted?
I remember read somewhere that this is actually a hardware flaw: the battery barely touches the PINs. So if there is any free play in the battery compartment, your phone will randomly loss contact with battery and hence shutdown. Exchange the phone seems to be the only solution. Or you can insert some paper on the other end of the battery to make sure it tightly presses against the PINs.
Mine never encounters this problem regardless how I mess with my phones (flashed firmware couple times and rooted, updated many many times).
It definitely reacts as if the power was removed from the phone. There is no power down screen or indication of rebooting. I have looked at the contacts on the battery, but my last phone made a perfect connection as far as I could tell.
If it is a hardware issue, then I'm perfectly okay with that. I could wire the battery directly to the phone and problem solved. I've also heard of people having a lot of luck buying the cheap chinese batteries for the phone off of ebay to correct their shut down issues. Maybe their connectors are pushed more toward the surface than the Samsung battery.
I see people on the forums posting all these issues . I never had any . I use my g2x everyday for school . The battery life is pretty good too i was able to get 70% still even through usage in school. I 1st had a nexus one it was a great phone but it had little memory for apps even when i had a sd card . I personally think the g2x is a great phone. It has plenty of memory space the screen isn't that bad compared to some devices. Although it didn't come with a sd card or earphones which is pretty bootleg to me but i have the phone and its great. So whats up with all these problems?
Mines perfect too but it is the 4th one. It's a shame it takes 3 returns to get a perfect phone.

Well, obviously some people have genuine issues, but more than anything it's new phone syndrome. Everyone is looking over their phones, testing them, playing with them. Realistically, if you stare at anything long enough, you can find a flaw, and when someone points a minor, barely noticeable flaw they discovered on their phone out to someone else, they either see the same flaw and freak out about it too, or imagine it.

While I do agree with what you stated I know in my case it is not just cosmetics it is a phone that is not functional and erratic. I am to receive a third one hopefully by Thursday. So far the first was unacceptable and the second was absolutely unusable. It is a shame as I really do like a lot of things about this phone.
Well i guess it is pretty normal, but i really just don't understand why you would point out a problem of your new phone that you paid your hard earned money for.

So, if you bought a new car and it had issues you would just keep quiet?
I'm not trying to be an ass or anything, but what you just said makes no sense.
People are pointing out there issues to see if others are having the same problem and possibly find a solution to the problem.
It also helps people who have not yet bought the phone to see what kind of issues it is having to determine if they still want to get it or wait until they are resolved.
8 Hours in after a 100% with at least 3 or so plus hours now with Blue tooth on and sitting at 35% now listening to music still and going to try and kill it before I'm off at 9. Let alone im twittering and using the 4g net to look at some things from twitter.
I'm not saying to keep quiet or anything but i see a ton of problems and yet i have no issues what so ever.
I just exchanged for the 2nd time today, and I am now on my 3rd g2x. The first one had light bleeding, and rebooted over 10 time the first day.
2nd one had the light bleed on a black screen, and a brown stain across the bottom of the screen when on a white background, and 3 dead pixels. The brown stain was very noticable, and anyone I showed the phone said something before I pointed it out. Worst, the gps couldn't lock my location to save its life. One day I kept trying for 40 minutes and the g2x never locked the location, even after factory resets and several reboots. I had to get on WIFI to make it work. Today it would find a location, but it was almost a mile away from me. It continued doing this throughout the day as I went to other locations. So I returned it.
Just opened up my 3rd one. I'm told they just got a new shipment today, and it's out of that shipment. My hopes are high! I turn on the phone, I tell myself this is the one. This one is going to have a display that doesn't bleed. Wouldn't you know i'm greeted to backlight bleed. But this one is worst than the pictures on the forums, and by far worst than the first 2 phones.
I'm beside myself. The phone runs so smooth, and I really want a dual core stock android phone. But between the reboots, the bleeding screen, the dead pixels, the gps that doesn't work, I think it's time to throw in the hat.
I'm trying one more time, but this time i'm going to pay the restock fee, and go to a different store. If this one is bunk, that's it, i'm done. I'm waiting for the next "super phone". I read a lot about the nexus one having major issues when I got it (ordered the day it came out), but I never had any. Maybe this is just a luck of the draw thing, and i'm exceptionally unlucky this time. But it seems a lot of other people on these forums are having the same issues.
Not a single issue for me..perfect coming from a vibrant..
I'm having a problem with the external sd card on my phone. Its locked up, not locked, like password, but locked as in it says its a read only filesystem, and no matter what I do I can't edit the files or the permissions. can some one please give me some ideas on what I can do?
Im ecstatic that I finally made the switch to Tmo last week, just for this phone. Ive been with ATT, and their Android lineup, which imo, Captivate is the only one worth hanging on to.
Ive been watching Tmo for the last 3 years get the G1, N1, Nexus S, and now the G2x. Had enuff, and left ATT last week. Got out of one ETF, but still ended up with $345 ETFs on other 2 lines. And I dont regret it one bit so far. Even went on a Craigslist selling spree of all my ATT Androids except my Cappy (loved that phone).

No issues here ... on my 4th g2x though.
I agree that some people are just nit picking their phone, but that's ok - they spent a lot of hard-earned cash on this phone and they should get one that acceptable to them.
My first 3 had major issues:
1st one had the brown "stain" across the bottom of the screen and along the entire right side.
2nd one had reception, wifi and data connectivity issues.
3rd one started FC ing every time I touched the Android to set up the phone and if I skipped initial setup so I could connect to wifi. If I did get it set up, then it was just wonky - random reboots, lockups that required a battery pull, a couple of factory resets because I got stuck in the "checking system" bootloop. !Oy vey!
My 4th g2x is acceptable. Minor lcd bleeding, but I only notice it on the splash screen and the boot and power off animations. Can't see it when playing games or watching a movie in a dark room, so I'm ok with it.
As someone said earlier, its a shame it takes so many "attempts" to get an acceptable phone. But, to T-Mo's credit, at least they are doing what they can to make it right. They've been good to me about the exchanges and never really hassled me about any of them.
Mine is fine.
LCD backlight breeding is minimal and it's not enough to bother me, but ogg vorbis tag problem is more important.
Minimal backlight bleeding. Everything else is great.
Mines fine. One reset once... hasn't happened again and its been quite a while... love this phone

After all ur exchanges, did u get a feeling that this might be an hardware issue? (I know lcd bleeding is but.. all the other issues). Then i think it is ideal to wait out for an update from t mo or google or some custom dev for fixing all these issues right? I know when u have an option to switch , we go for it but just chkng if it is becaus of hardware that we are bound to do that...

Well... As we all know, gps is **** on our captivates. That being said, i found a way to get a gps lock, and almost all the time..
However the method isnt as simple as opening up Gmaps and pressing my location.
I have only tried this with Apex 8.2
To do this.. you have to enter AngryGPS (*#3214789650#*)
Then go to tracking test... Wait for it to present values of your latitude and longitude.
Once these values are there... press maps, and voila
Uhhh seems like the code is for lbstest. Well if so... By using a test feature all you are really doing is turning your gps on(all the time). Which will basically always give you quick lock because the gps is always on unless you kill all your apps or re-open lbstest and back out. Not really a fix, more of a drain on your battery. Only true fix for older models of this phone is to get a refurb'd from atnt/rogers in your case. (not samsung).
Once opened, Angry gps looks just like lbstest. For some reason it was renamed.
Just need to figure out a way to do this with Tasker.
Ah, in that case.. cant you just program tasker to only turn gps on when you open maps or a navigation app?

Yeah, but how do you program tasker to open up lbstestmode... then run the tracking test... wait about 10 seconds... then open up maps?
So let me see if I get this straight. You start GPS, wait till it gets a lock and then open maps and you have a lock?
that's what we used to do on Eclair.
NascarFastcar is right, the only real way to have a working GPS is to get a refurbished unit. Most of us early adopters are going past our 1 year mark, so if you haven't, get one quick!
I still have a couple months in my warranty left. What problem would I go to them with?

Tell them the gps dosent work. That's all. They will most likely try to get a lock indoors lol and then they will just give you a refurbed. They like to use google maps. I tried to show them gps test etc and they tried to blame my gps not working via a 3rd party app.

I disagree that the gps is fixed. I just got a refurb about 6 weeks ago. The gps worked awesome for a few weeks. It now sucks eggs - actually worse than my last phone. Totally stock, just like my previous phone. I don't know the build number because it has a weird refurb sticker that doesn't have a build number on it.

I've learned how to use it. I know others have tried, but here are the ONLY real instructions that work:
1) You have to always look 2 steps ahead of what it says when using Google Maps on a Captivate because you never know when all of a sudden it will think you're on a different street and start giving you directions on how to get back on the correct path.
2) When she it starts telling you how to correct yourself (when you're actually already on the right path) learn how to IGNORE it or it will confuse you
3) It's ok for occasional use, but always and I mean ALWAYS have a real GPS handy in the glove compartment for the occasions when your Captivate decides that it isn't in the mood to lock onto any statellites even when it sees 7 or 8 with a with strong signals
4) Always have a real GPS handy when your Captivate can't locate ANY satellites.
5) When in Maine or rural New Hampshire don't even think about using your Captivate!!!
6) Overlook it's GPS defects because it's so awesome in every other way.
Does this post earn a sticky? We should coin a pharse that encompasses all of the above (you know your Captivate has trained you in a similar manor).

Ah but you see, i dont drive. Well i do... but i dont have a car. So public transport is what i use and luckily, google maps supports it. Basically all i need is a position lock, rather than finding my house, tracking down whatever streets i used to get to wherever i am, then selecting that as a point...
I returned my 1008 Captivate because of random shutdowns last week and received a 1007 refurb and the GPS was perfect on 2.2.1 and continues to be perfect on Apex 8.2. Also, no random shutdowns.
Exchanged a 1007 Captivate in My, got a 1010 refurb. GPS is about 98% as good as my Garmin GPS in one car. In the other, there must be some kind of interference scit doesn't keep a good signal in the location I put it navigate.
I find it fun to see the difference in the routes they provide.
The 1010 model can also track me walking on the sidewalk. I was watching Google Earth zoomed in as far as it would go.
+1 on returning the phone to an AT&T device service center. I went several weeks back and tested my phone when I got home and it was worse. Went back the next day, the girl there first turned on the "use mobile network" option and told me the gps was now working. I got a little aggrevated but politely pressed on, she then told me the samsung captivate has no gps in it, this sparked my asshole lawyer mode. After making the girl feel embarrased in front of her coworkers for insulting my intelligence I demanded a different rep work with me. I had him go thru 7 phones before getting one that had a working gps. After the 2nd, they told me I would have to call customer service, I laughed and told them that this is a customer service center and my contract entitles me to burn through every single unit they have until they fix my device issue. After the 6th the guy finally paid attention to what I was telling them about looking at the build number (because they have to send all those phones back to samsung). I now have an 1101 that has been working great for about a month. If it screws up again I will go ruin their day again.
So I got one for $34, delivered today. Looks perfect other than a couple scuffs on the bottom corners. The seller said it was working fine (despite listing saying it was for parts/not working). I don't have any usable cell service where I live without getting a booster and antenna of some sort, so I don't care about activating it. I plan on using it basically as an internet tablet to check email, etc.
I do not have an sd card, charger, or data cable yet, they should come tomorrow. Since the battery is close to dead, I can't find out much. It turns on fine, gets to the home screen and has that "too many pattern attempts" screen (screen looks perfect, not a single scratch by the way) with the google login. I know not to try a full hard reset with the battery being about dead, but I have tried to bring up the menu option so I know how to get there when I do get it charged. I have tried every key combination method I can find with no luck, keys ~seem to all be working from what I can tell, read in the comments that a few people had no luck. One time I got that screen with the android and shovel, waiting for download. I was wondering if that is from the factory, or if that means it's been rooted?
Basically, all I really want to do is restore it to stock for right now. Maybe something better down the line, I'd just like to use it for now since I've never even really seen a smartphone before, because nobody has one with the poor cell service here. I have the EE19 build downloaded, and I see the restoring to stock thread. I want to do it the right way. So, if it has lagfix installed, I see I need to disable that. Any other things I should know about? I was just wondering if it sounds rooted, if I need to do something else if it is. I don't have a lot of time on my hands to do research, although I did a little already, and I have a very limited internet connection so I can't download a lot of things, I wasn't expecting to need to do this when I communicated with the seller.
Thanks for any advice or tips.
Edit: I was also wondering the best way to go about checking the ESN, or if I should try. Like I said, I don't care to activate it on US Cellular, but if I'd resell it or something. I know I could use PagePlus, but the Verizon tower is 30 miles away, so not much chance of that working well either. I don't think it should be stolen or anything, but was thinking if the account ever got settled or anything....
Well I got it, posting from it now. Only problem is unsuccessful download errors in app market, after download is almost complete. On wifi. I tried every solution I found for that with no success. Other than that, no problems.
Tried every fix for the market, deleting cache, changing permissions on vendor.apk, etc. Seeing it was a common problem with few solutions that work, I flashed CM7. That worked great, apps installed fine, but of course wireless cut out constantly, not usable for long. Saw that was common, tried everything with no luck. Went back to stock, then airplane mode, now market works fine. It fails whenever not in airplane mode. So I'm sticking with this for now.
Can't activate anyway, but best I saw was -104db, but mostly no service. My LG tracfone does a little better with reception.
