[Q] Camera Performance - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Hey, M8 owners. I'm a note 3 owner looking at the M8. I came from the M7 but sold it mostly due to the camera performance and lack of expandable storage. The latter has been addressed and from I've read the camera has improved as well. However, I wanted to get the opinions of actual owners about the quality of photos taken with the M8. I'm especially interested in hearing opinions from those that frequently photograph their kids. So, please chime in with your experience.
TIA!

I came from the Note 3 and really the only thing that I miss is the camera. While the M8 camera has some cool gimmicks, the note 3 really took great photos. That said, the build quality and everything else about the phone I love - even with a smaller screen. I haven't looked back and the camera is sufficient enough for everyday use.
hope this helps.

Thanks for the response. It's a little discouraging, but I think I'll hit up a Verizon store with my daughter tomorrow and do some thorough testing of the camera. It sounds like some of the auto settings are less than ideal but that a few manual adjustments can really improve performance.

Taken in mid air. Did I spam the shutter button.... Yes. Got some blurry ones too. But for kids and everyday photography, its excellent

I own both devices and have to say that the Note 3 takes better pictures as far as I am concerned. What I will say is that I have a main line and a business line and the M8 is the phone I choose to be on the main line. Here is an example of pictures from both:

Cool, thanks. Looks good. I played with the M8 today. My daughter wasn't up to going to Verizon with me, but I think I got a good feel for the camera. Shutter speeds are fast and shot to shot tines were impressive. By no means am I a highly skilled photographer, I just want to be able to capture decent shots of my kids. I think I'll try to pick one up and give it a go. Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Here's two I took over the weekend. If someone wouldn't mind sharing their manual settings I would appreciate that. I just used HDR. These images on my desktop PC background are blurry and pixelated but look good enough for mobile viewing.

Camera 360 has been my favorite. The pro version has a few more features than the free, but I'm happy with the free. Used black and white setting.
No, I don't mean for actually taking photos. I have a DSLR for that.

Ah, I see now. You mean apps that assist in photography. I guess I read it wrong. If you meant a camera app, you probably would have titled it, "camera app." Haven't come across anything as of yet, but will shoot it this direction when I do. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
Cam Calc is fairly useful..

Photoshop does that pretty well. I don't know why you'd need it on your phone since 1) you can't really do exposure bracketing with the built-in camera and 2) it is very CPU-intensive. It takes my quad-core about a minute to HDR a 12.1MP image with 3 shots.

As a very keen amateur have subscribed to this thread.
Don't really know what kind of apps you're looking for, but I found GoldenPic (I know it's on Android, but I don't know about iPhone) that shows you the golden hour, blue hour, sunrise, sunset, etc. It seems to work good and I took some great golden hour photos this past weekend (if I don't mind saying so myself)
it looks like they just have Android for now. I found the website here:
goldenpic.jebsapps.com
You also have 'Photography Trainer'.
It's a Paid App $1.99
To Quote from AppBrain:-
This app guides you step-by-step how to set your D-SLR to take the perfect shot. Capture amazing photos by truly understanding shutter speed, aperture & ISO. Dozens of sample photos, photography tips and tutorials. Night photography, sports, landscapes, portraits, HDR & more.
It's well loved with practically ALL comments getting 5 Stars.
Anyone here try that 'Photography Trainer' app? I wish they had a free version available to try out first.

It's very good. I just got it, and it is really good especially if you are totally new to DSLR photography. It gives you an intuitive flow of conditions and then gives details based on each level. I.E. Night time -> moving object -> fireworks.

Here's why multitasking is limited on the One X..

Compare the GSM nexus free memory to my One X. Both have exact same apps installed and running and both are stock.

Sense simply takes up too much of the phone's memory.
I'd have a GNEX if the camera wasn't a POC.
The HOX IMO, and I'm sorry for using too many 3 letter short cuts, but the HOX on ATT is about as close to perfect as you can get right now. Yes the multi task issue, but the battery is great, LTE and the camera are super, but the fricken lack of storage and a mem card is almost a deal breaker for me, but I'm dealing with it.

New Google Camera Sucks

Hi everyone,
The title is pretty clear. And I want the old one back. I want to be able to take pictures during video. I want to be able to change white balance. I want to be able to change scene mode. The lens blur is absolute poo. It straight up sucks. I know the real time picture ratio isn't right on the old one, but it just looks better with the added space. Is there any way to get back my old, functional camera back? Thanks in advance for any answers.

How could you NOT know how to uninstall updates. Should give the new update a chance, I agree that the massive are at the bottom isn't ideal but once you've messed around with the settings etc I personally think its better. And I'm pretty sure you can take a PIC whilst recording by tapping on the screen, don't quote me on that though.

None of the massive area in the bottom is part of the photo anyway so how is it less than ideal? At least now we can see what the photo will look like before we take it. No more accidentally missing part of the shot cause the screen shows more picture than photo.

I was taking some photos last night, and had quite a bit of difficulty trying to focus the image especially with the flash. Other people were taking photos to and the edge took very poor images when both flashes were active. I have upgraded from a galaxy S4 and noticed that it takes some time to process and focus the image is there can be many moving focal points.
Yeah its a hit or miss on the focus. At least in my phone. I could only get it to focus twice out of many tries. Those two focuses took pretty pictures thou. But that's unacceptable. The reason I'm asking is because it could be this phone. I hope we get more responses of people experience with the camera.

I have no problem with mines. It works great and i even focus on my jeans and could see all the stitching.
Try to clear the camera data.
drag the camera icon to app info. Then clear data and clear cache.
I had to do this on another phone long time ago.
Thank you xile6, I've already clear data and cache several times. Yes if I but my finger close to lens I can make up my finger print, looks nice but when I try to focus on a object about 5 feet away, it doesn't focus.

I sure hope its not alot of them that have this problem. I remember the HTC One M7 had purple tint in low light. It would happen months after having the phone.

Here is my topic : Note 4 camera won't lock focus + blurry edges on pictures with far focus
Best regards,
Chris.
Sounds like a Samsung problem. My wife is on her second Note Edge with a focus problem. It focuses when you shake the camera. AT&T had told me twice that it's a software problem. Apparently they think we are idiots.
They won't warranty the second phone even though it's only 7 days old because the we bought her first phone 31 days ago.... 1 day past the 30 day warranty. I hate the crooks at AT&T.
Mine has this problem intermittently. When i close out and go back in it seams to focus
Sent form my Samsung Galaxy® Note Edge
I think the selected SD card may cause the focus delaying. i selected device option and the focus instantly enabled. anyone can experiment the location selection whoever has microsd inserted?
I don't have an SD card in mine so it goes straight to the internal storage

I think this is Exynos but I cannot be certain. Any application I use to check the specs comes back as "Processor Unknown"
In regards to the pictures, all I can say is the first few were taken in extremely dark environments and whilst I was pleased with the results when viewing on screen, when enlarged they are not fantastic.
HOWEVER I don't think I have ever used a camera on a smartphone as good as this in low light. In normal lighting conditions, the 6S Plus (my daily driver) seems better but this is without extensive testing, the S7 really shines in low light situations.
It's as great camera and I doubt anybody will have any issues with its performance.
In regards to the S7 itself, there is the occasional lag on the operating system however all in all it builds on last year and it's much smoother.
I've owned every Galaxy S device, and by far this is the best generation but anybody coming from an S6 will struggle to be excited. It's certainly not as fluid as a 6P, which I have owned too.
