Maxx vs Moto X. - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Moto has offered a warranty replacement of a Maxx for my X. I know the boot sound will bother me a lot. But I thought I would ask If others may have made the same swap. I do wear an xl glove so the size increase is OK.
Are slip-proof rubber cases & screen protectors hard to get?

I've plated around with both and although I don't care for the droid branding....I loved the battery life... I'm actually waiting for an X swap for a maxx myself right now. I'm just bummed neither one I am able to root so far

RAZR Maxx has definitely got its niche: battery. You can also root the Maxx, I have no idea what the other guy is talking about, Google it there are tons of root methods (PC, one-click etc). I would recommend the Maxx, and AFAIK there are a good amount of accessories for it. You can remove the boot sound after you root by deleting /system/media/audio/startup.ogg or the similar, you will find it in one of the sub-folders. It will be an ogg file. If you choose not to root you can still remove it by creating a flashable update.zip to remove that one file (false signed with toolkit to pass md5 check). Hope this gives some insight,

Root on 422 but not 44.

@aarongillion63
More on the diy update.zip please? Details?
Seems it would come with the latest 4.4 so I would have no root.

Yes this method is not very published, but you can do a lot of root things with it without actually having root. My main purpose to create these was to push ad-blocking hosts files to peer's devices without having to root them. Basically, you must have the know-how knowledge on how to code updater scripts, I will not go into detail on this as there are guides.. But once you have your package lined up, you're all set to go to flash it, if you have cwm installed. Without root, you have no cwm. So that's where I learned how to fake sign those update.zips to flash thru stock. Just get signtool or better yet there's more reliable ones getting out there just Google search "update.zip signer" and before you know it you can mod all you want without even having root. One thing to note is that your bootloader must not have any signature checking on main /system partition or whatever you're modding.
Hope this helps,

After some research, I think so yes. Check out this article: the OP states that the KitKat zip can be flashed regardless of locked bootloader. So now as long as you can fake-sign your own zips you can mod all you want. Sometimes (a lot of times) the signing doesn't work right (and you'll read that a lot of places) but that won't hurt your device, the recovery will simply deny your update until you get it right.
Edit: I am not sure if this goes for *latest* moto's, as you put emphasis on in your post.

Did you mean to leave a link?
Many of us X/Ultras would love such an opportunity.

Chances are that either phone you get, it might be on 4.4.2 already. So if the boot loaders can't be unlocked, you won't have root for now. And if they are 4.2.2 or 4.4, you might be able to root.
Its gonna be luck of the draw.
I'd take the maxx for sure personally. Its the same phone, with a bigger screen and battery. Win win.

You can roll the dice and hope for an X that isn't on 4.4.2.....or get the better phone.
You may end up with root on either or no root....I'd go for the phone I prefer.
Root is not essential on either.

If you are about timely updates to Android, I'd stick with the X. Otherwise, the Maxx is a great phone, especially the battery life. It'll be hard to tell the difference between the X and the Maxx from a usability point of view.
The Droid sounds are so amazingly annoying, though it's good that you don't have to restart the phone all that often. It's pretty stable.
As others have said, if root is important to you, it'll probably not happen with the Maxx unless you're lucky to get it with 4.2.2 still installed. I don't care about root myself (in fact, I really don't want the phone rooted.)

Sure. If you like Zagg-style, Zagg and Skinomi make them, and Verizon sells the non-wet apply versions. I think that there are enough TPU cases that you should find something.

[Q] Need Latest xt926 NA/US firmware

I have the Developer Edition RAZR HD with an unlocked bootloader. There is a new OTA (9-18-94 and 9-30-1) which failed to install correctly, sending me to the Fastboot screen "permanently".
All research points to needing to RSD-Lite the failed firmware (or newer). The trouble is, this is very new (11-5-2013), and I'm not finding the firmware. Can anyone point me to it, or do I just need to wait.
I can try going to Verizon, but that sounds awful.
Thanks all.
Is it the second one in this list?
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/vanquish/list.php
It's possible, since that list doesn't have dates on it of any sort. The new update is 9-18-94 and the 2nd list item says 9-8-94 (kind of). In any case, I'll try it.
EDIT: Naw, that one was posted in July. This new one literally push OTA on 11/5/13. Thank you though.

The file link mentioned by RikRong above should be the current build for VRZ XT926: 9.8.1Q-94 build at sbf.droid-developers.org. This build number matches the build number on my phone after the OTA. The system version starts with 9.18, but the build number starts with 9.8.

OK, so even though the OTA came out 11/5/2013 and this firmware was added 7/11/2013, you think it's the same build?

i have the file P3 posted, the md5 is the same as the one you can get from sbf-dev.
OK, well I'm having no luck. I'm now getting the error: (bootloader) Invalid partition name sbl1
I'm not much of an expert on flashboot, so I don't know how to get a list of partitions from the phone, if possible.
I appreciate the verification that I have the right firmware, but it won't flash. Any ideas appreciated.
Duplicate post
See the following xda section: General discussion/Hardware hacking/El Grande Partition Table Reference DTD 10/28/2012. The chart shows sbl1 as secondary boot loader. I wish I had more expertise to resolve your issue. Here's hoping that someone has more info.

In any case, it looks very much like I ought to have an sbl1. I found a thread in Spanish that I Google Translated™, and it's possible that it says the battery may not be charged enough to flash. In any case, the same "no sbl1" error was mentioned in the same thread as some battery discussion or another, lol.
The thing is, I don't know if my phone's battery is charging or not. But it's plugged in and I'll try in the morning.
I hope it works tomorrow.

Well, no luck. It appears I'd have to re-partition the phone to flash anything to it. I can't believe this happened on a Verizon OTA. And since my bootloader was unlocked, I have no warranty.

I think the real question is how long before someone finds a software exploit that allows S-Off.
I honestly think we have a long, long wait, if we ever see it.

I feel like two days in if we don't have root yet, this thing is going to be tough to crack.

Are you kidding? Two days for a phone chipset that had like 10 iterations of security? I will bet that no one will get a root exploit unless it comes in the form of s-off because its silly to have root without s-off on HTC phones. Beups, jcase or whoever is working on the phone likely have root exploits already (and they always save one or two for a rainy day) and are not going to release it on it's own. Be patient, stop asking for ETAs.

Well for one root only won't allow us an insecure kernel to be flashed. That means /system write protection will still be in place.
Unlock allows you to flash custom recovery and kernels.
S-off let's you do all (even firmware downgrades)

So then what is "root only" able to do? Especially the type we know have available that only roots after a minute after a reboot so that first minute on reboot you are not rooted. Makes me think rooted apps/tweaks won't work right since after boot they can't go into effect since root hasn't kicked in yet???

A lot won't work right. Write protection will revert most changes back after a reboot. Root can be effective for some changes that don't need to persist a reboot. Just all depends on what you use root for. Non-system app data back-up/restore is a good example.

I've never had a rooted android but I had a jail broken iPhone and I did love it, although I would never had paid for it, I don't see why I would invest such a high amount onto something that will never bring me more than advanced customization(I'm assuming that all that root does as its all that jailbreaking seemed to do) maybe I'm saying this because I'm not a developer myself and I don't work on these things, but having my phone rooted will always seem as a low priority. If it were 5-10 dollars id probably give in because of temptation to have cooler feaututes on my device. Anyway this is just my point of view and just wanted yo share .

There's always paying for the unlock code, depending on what build you have. Got my code couple days ago and it worked. So much easier having boot loader unlocked.

Getting a license server error?
Edit: nvmd had to uninstall adblocker like it said LOL works great you da man Jcase!
Anyone have luck with the Droid Ultra? No Joy for Root.
Starting to hate this phone, thought other than battery, wireless charging, and screen size that was the only difference in the three Droid 2013 line?
Worked here too!
Droid Maxx assembled in 2013 on KitKat 4.4.4 rooted and sunshine worked flawlessly (minus changing from ART to Dalvik)
Side note: Wish there was an easy way to get rid of the unlocked bottloader message on the boot splash screen. I dont want to flash anything without a good way to revert just in case (see what i did there) of OTAs.

[Q] OTA 186.43.15 Let's Lay This Question To Rest...

...As I'm sure many others like me will visit this forum, read guide disclaimers, and still ask themselves "is it really true??"
If we accept the latest OTA (186.43.15) WITHOUT unlocking the bootloader, we are screwed. There is absolutely, positively, nothing that can be done (hacking, version rollback, etc.) with the phone forever. The bootloader has been locked and we're stuck with what we've got. No way to unlock it now.
So, is it really true? Please say it ain't so.
Yes, it is true, at least with the Motopocalypse method. There are other ways to bootloader unlock phones such as Sunshine, but I think that only supports newer Motorola devices.
http://theroot.ninja/
Also, you have to be rooted. If Towelroot doesn't work on the latest OTA (no idea if it does or not) then you'd have to wait for a new exploit.
Thanks for the reply.
What's most frustrating about this is that I knew it was coming, I knew the bootloader was going to be locked by the next OTA but I was too nervous to unlock the bootloader and possibly brick my wifes phone in the process. She would be pissed.
The system update notifier kept bugging her and I kept telling her to not to do it and eventually she just she went ahead with it. Ugh.
Crossing my fingers for new exploit...

Forget another bootloader unlock exploit. That was a once-in-a-lifetime chance. As for root, well, there might be, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Of course, that's what we all said when the first KK OTA came out and look what they gave us - Towelroot AND bootloader unlock, but the bootloader unlock was a mistake - they accidentally reverted part of the code back to the original exploit code. So, that was a mistake on Moto's part.
But, this latest OTA is the last OTA for this phone. No more updates from Moto so don't expect the bootloader exploit to show up again.

That's what I was afraid of. Same thing happened on my Droid X once updated to the last build of 2.3.4
I guess the bottom line is this: I don't care that much about the final KK build as much as I care about wifi hotspot tethering. That's really what I'm after. After her phone was updated to KK from JB it killed the tethering app that we were using. So my only recourse was to flash the phone back to JB. But I just didn't have the time to mess with it, plus it's my wife's phone and I didn't want to risk bricking it.
Near as I can tell, after quite a bit of searching, I don't have any way to fix tethering with this latest build. I'll ask the question in the Q&A section.

Exactly what version of KK is she on? If she's still on 183.46.10, then that allows the bootloader to be unlocked which will then allow you to root it and then apply a tethering hack.
If, however, you are on 183.46.14 or 183.46.15, then yes, you are hosed and cannot revert back to 183.46.10 or JB.

She has 183.46.15. Only option at this point is to exchange it for a used one that hasn't been updated...

She actually hasn't been happy with her XT926, so I think I might just buy a used phone of the same generation and mod it. If successful, we'll just swap the hacked one onto her account. I'm thinking Galaxy S3? I'd be curious to know what the "most hackable" phone of that generation is (JB or early KK)? Or should I post that question in the XDA General? I've searched and haven't found that question asked.
Damn :/ I just bought RAZR MAXX HD on ebay and I was sure there will be no problems with unlocking and rooting the phone. But the system version is 183.46.15 :/
Anyone in Poland wants to buy a RAZR MAXX HD?

Did you boot it into fastboot mode and ensure whether it's already been unlocked or not? You might get lucky if they already unlocked it.
I've checked it - it is locked :/
