[Q] KK ROMs: restarting UI - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have this issue with pretty much any 4.4 ROM for Nexus S out there - system UI is restarting. For example I use Facebook Messenger to chat with me friend, then I switch back to Nova Launcher to go into GMail… and the phone freezes for 20 seconds. After that freeze, the screen goes black and after another few seconds it gets me to the lockscreen. So I unlock the phone and what I see? Everything is booting up like I've just rebooted the phone. This also happens alot when I try to pull out notifications list.
This happens with every 4.4 ROM I've tried at least 4 times a day, so it's pretty annoying. I did a bit of research and I don't see anybody else having this sort of issue, so my question is - has anybody had this issue with 4.4? If so, what was the solution? I really love using KitKat because it's smoother than older Android versions, but this breaks the overall experience so much…
Thanks alot for your time!

What are the ROMs that you have used?
Did you do a clean install (including manual format /system partition)?

I've tried KitKang, SlimKat, MoKee and right now I am testing out C-RoM, which is pretty good feature-wise and speed-wise, except it does the same thing like other 4.4 ROMs. I always do clean installs (including manual formats).

its due to cm's new theme engine. revert to an older version of a rom that uses the previous version and see how things go.

I haven't had any issues with the latest BeanStalk or C-rom.. Both are CM based, but Mokee, CM and EuroSkank seem to suffer from the bug.. I haven't tried Slim since 4.6, but no ui bug there either.. I would recommend either BeanStalk for battery, C-rom based on performance and Slim 3.0 for being the best choice to have both...

C-Rom started crashing hard after about a day and a half of use. Totally unusable.
I'm back on Euroskank now and the latest build has been much better.
Hopefully they get the Theme Chooser bug figured out soon!

Interesting. I was also using the stock theme (not dark), but with Trebuchet. I wonder if the launcher may also have something to do with it.

nightlies are more stable than RC2, so try those if you have problems with RC2
Its not that much of a big deal for me, I will wait for the next RC if its a known issue.

Infuse Roms?

Hello everyone i just signed up and i own a Samsung Infuse 4G and ive been flashing some roms on it lately and i want to know in your opinion what is the best rom.
i tried zeus, and i like it but i hate build 5.2 and build 6, because of the fact that wallpapers do not scroll. live wallpapers do, but static ones do not. I love build 3 fixed for ZEUS because it has scrollable wall papers and the app drawer is transparent. i dont like the black background when looking through my apps i like it see through.
but, being build 3 it freezes quite a bit. i tried CM7, didnt like it. i want to try something else.
I hate flashing roms and testing them because every time i restore it gives me an error saying "No sdcard/.android.secure Found. Skipping restore of SD card apps." so i have to re install 1 by 1 the apps with titanium backup and its really annoying. once i reach my 10 post mark i will start to post in the developers thread but this is all i can do now.
in a rom in need stability, no freezing no non working elements, all that.
clean, simple and crisp.
no dumb animations to lag the os and use mass ram. clean simple and fast. id even use gingerbread with touchwiz 4.0 like on the samsung galaxy s 2 skyrocket LTE that has a very good stock OS. maybe there is a way to put that on my infuse? I want to try s.u.r.f.a.c.e. rom but that's a hard way to flash it
any suggestions?

You can always Port your own ROM. Just saying.
If all you don't like about ZEUS is the launcher's look, then you can use one of the alternative launchers available off Market... err Play... or whatever Google is calling its new and improved more privacy breaking app download thing.
Off hand, the two I can think of are GOLauncher and PhoenixLauncher. I currently use GOLauncher on ZEUS and like it quite a bit, plus it's free. I think I'm going to give PhoenixLauncher a go after some of the bugs are worked out.

Yerp on the surface rom...super lite...has lots of add on apps...smooth,stable....
The reason that wallpapers don't scroll is a SAMSUNG issue, not a Zeus issue, a change they made in the new gb leaks, so they wont change, on any rom built from that leak. Build 3 is no more and outdated, so if you don't want another launcher I suggest keeping build 3 because I removed it from the server. And tw 4 is way too buggy and unstable, that's why it was removed and will not return.

Alright thanks,
And now I understand that about Zeus,
But anyway great job with it its still an awesome rom. I'll try to flash s.u.r.f.a.c.e
How can I flash surface from my current position (Zeus build 3 with the ruxk kernel)?

Well I'm currently running Z.E.U.S Rom Build 6. When I was stock GB (for the short time that was) I used the TouchWizz 4.5 Launcher, and I'm using it now. Scrollable wallpapers plus you can flash icon themes. Here is the XDA Thread Link:

There are tons of features in MIUI besides the launcher, I'd suggest you take a look at http://en.miui.com/
Just off the top of my head, things MIUI has that no other rom can match - theming, backup/restore, contacts/sms/dialer, speed, the music player, toggles etc.
I used to swear by MIUI when I had my Evo 4G, by far the most unique and best rom on Android, it replaces so many apps you need to install. I just hope it becomes stable for ICS/JB soon.

So far I'm finding this miui ROM has better 4g data capabilities than any cm ROM that I've tried. I've tested numerous ROMs in an area that has shifting 3/4g and this miui build has the same 4g strength as my Beans tw ROM.

Not sure if that has changed. However, I just created a folder, put all of my less used apps in there then dragged it to the launcher. Voila, app drawer. kind of.

if you want stock touchwiz newest with MODs..
if you want a 4.1.1/4.1.2 AOSP ROM, I personally suggest ParanoidAndroid 2.5.6
and if you want AOSP 4.2 I'd would sugggest BAMF Paradigmn, but that isn't public yet, so my next is Carbon ROM is nice, Slim is great, and Eclipse is awesome if you want a nice dark theme and a great ROM..
I personally use stock kernel on touchwiz, and whatever comes in the ROMs for AOSP.

I honestly think this is your best bet. Though the AOSP roms are snappy and simple, there are still way too many bugs. I'm on CleanRom as well and it's very smooth with virtually no bugs. You can even theme your phone to resemble AOSP while still having the luxury of using all the addons touchwiz has to offer.

As I said above this ROM also has virtually no bugs and is very nicely put together. If you do in fact go with clean however, don't put a launcher on it because it ruins the purpose of a custom rom.

I don't normally use a pattern lock, but I just set one up and it seemed to work fine for me. I am using a CM10.1 unofficial that I've repo-sync'd and built myself this morning. I added a few cherry-picks, but they shouldn't have directly affected that.

Should I update?

I am currently on Cyanogenmod 9, and I am hearing great progress in Cyanogenmod 10 and 10.1 and also the SlimBean 4.2.2. Should I update to these or wait? What is the difference between slimbean and cm? Cm10 or Cm10.1?
4.1 is has pretty much the same stability as ICS. GPS doesn't work though (the GPS on his device is crap so it doesn't really make a difference). WiFi doesn't work on 4.2, so if you're itching the flash a new ROM id go with the pacman ROM which is 4.1.
Slimbean has more customization options than cm.There really isn't even much of a difference between 4.1 and 4.2, I think there's only lock screen widgets, different notification toggles and offline Google now so you're not really missing out
I'd probably wait as those are all Jellybean based but most still have issues whereas CM9 is pretty stable.
CM10 is Jellybean 4.1.2, most things works but still a bit buggy. Probably not a lot more DEV on this as 10.1 should be the new goal.
CM10.1 is Jellybean 4.2.2, a lot less stuff works but getting there.
Slimbean are just a variation of the above, just slimmed down. They take out all the garbage they can to make it run the best and give us the most space. There is a slimbean 4.1.2 and 4.2.2, both have roughly the same problems as the above ones do.
They're getting closer to getting them working though.

I don't care much for the GPS, it's just that they say that 4G reboots so you have to be on 2G speeds, and 2G is very slow. WiFi doesn't work either. So this makes the phone very internet-less.

The 4G thing was like 10 versions ago of JB. Works fine now in the latest. Wifi works in CM10/Slimbean 4.1.2, just not the latest but hopefully soon. I've been running the Xperia Slimbean 4.1.2 for the past 3-4 days as my daily usage with no issues.

So there is SlimBean that's like CM but a little more, then there are more SlimBeans that are based off the original SlimBean?!

Slim is based off CM. All custom ROMs are based off CM. Unless there just modified stock.

Oh makes sense.
I think I'm going to update to SlimBean 4.1.2.
Try out ultragen 1.0.1 it is just so fast
I have flashed every ROM and i keep going back to ultragen. It's super snappy and everything works. Just my two cents

I don't want an GS3 themed phone with all those features it comes with.
Installing themes is insanely easy. It is by far the fastest ROM if you want a ROM pre installed with a theme you like you won't have a good time

Seems like you do care but whatever ultragen is still the fastest out atm and for all those features your talking about i have no clue because ultragen is pretty basic when you compare it to other roms. It only takes moments to make any rom look how you want. It's all about feel and ultragen feels the best imo

Took only 5 mins to make ultragen look completely different. While still being the fastest

I just said I don't care for theme, and how do you know this ROM is the "fastest"?
Easily is the fastest and i know this from personal experience flashing every ROM xda has for this phone. Everyone cares about themes unless you like stock cm9 which is still a theme that can be applied to ultragen so it looking like sg 3 means nothing. Ultragen also can have one of the best battery lifes if you prefer that over performance.

Download jellybean cm theme on the play store. Go to settings>themes and apply it. Bam, you just got ultragen that looks like jellybean

The settings window looks like CM if that's what you mean. Themes only change the look, not the actual functionality.
