Out of box system updates - Verizon HTC One (M8)

I'm picking up the M8 tomorrow after work. Just wondering if I should avoid any out of box system updates that are currently available that will stop me from rooting. I looked around the M8 forums last night and didn't sees any threads on the subject. Sorry if it has already been asked.
Should I expect to see any after activation?

I haven't heard of any issues but I just S-Off and flashed everything through fastboot so I never took an ota. If you are unsure just don't take any updates until after using firewater if that's your plan.

I got mine and it was on version 1.12.xxx and there was an ota to 1.55.605.2 and I took it naturally and then got s-off, root and recovery. So as long as there wasn't another one you should be good to do it ibn whatever order you prefer

[PSA] There's an OTA coming and it COULD be bad for us

It seems AT&T is pushing out an OTA version 2.20 that is rumored to close all the loopholes we've used to unlock and root the One X.
If you have NOT rooted and unlocked your bootloader and you want to do so don't accept the update.
Wait until someone has gotten a hold of this version and picked it apart before installing it.
Keep Calm and Carry On.

Even if you are rooted and unlocked BL, don't accept the OTA, unless you are brave and feel like being the guinea pig (I guess somebody has to be). The install may not work, or it may wipe out root, and the existing root methods may have been plugged up. OTA Rootkeeper might work. It did for the last OTA, but there is no guarantee that it will work this time. Somebody will probably post this as a recovery flashable zip in pre-rooted form. So be patient, unless you feel like experimenting, and living with the consequences.
Thanks for the public service announcement, as I'm sure people will start asking whether its safe to install the OTA.
I figured people who rooted would know this but thank you for adding it.

It never fails to surprise me how may people who are rooted try to install an OTA.
Bu-bu-but I want the update NOW. Can I plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz install it? I know you said its not safe, but is it safe?

Or how many people unroot just so they can get an OTA that will provide very little added performance if any. People are sooooo quick to accept OTAs when they have no clue what they are for. I can understand wanting to accept an OTA for a major OS update like ICS to JB (ok that was a lie, I still have no clue why people would rather accept an OTA than just flash a rooted ROM) but to give up root for a simple MR is just asinine.

Something like this should go without saying. Any xda member that's foolhardy enough to download an ota without knowing the consequences, probably doesn't belong here in the first place.

Now that I'm thinking about it, this is a pretty effective method to block and patch our root exploit
And I'm glad I did it last night

Interesting that this wasn't leaked, and this is the first news we got of this new version. AT&T must be upgrading its internal security.

If I'm not mistaken, the exploit uses the AT&T update server to trick the phone into download mode, so I don't think this could work.

[Q] Auto-Update: Can it be disabled?

The root for 2.20 was just released, but I won't be able to do it for a few days and I'm worried an AT&T update might fix it. Right after I got my HOX, the 2.2 update showed up and I was hesitant to accept it because I heard that the new update would stop rooting. I declined, but next time it came up it didnt ask me if I wanted to update. Is there a way to make sure this doesnt happen again?
Thanks in advance.

Everything it starts to automatically download the update factory reset and delete the part it had downloaded off your phone
There is an apk called updater or something like that. Just uninstall or freeze it, and you will never get the OTA update notifications again. This has been discussed before in multiple other threads, so do a search for the full details.
Grab Voodoo OTA rootkeeper from the play store and back up your root just in case if you are running the stock Rom. The JB update has broken root on many devices and will be coming soon for ATT One X. Voodoo has been able to restore it after JB.

Guys, he's not rooted, so Voodoo isn't going to work.
To the OP, I would not worry about a few days. AT&T and HTC do not move that fast (oh if they could--we'd have JB by now!).

I am glad I didn't participate in this soak nor get the update. It's causing a lot of problems.
Honestly I think what we have here is possibly an influx of users coming from devices like the galaxy nexus that were easier to modify. Lots of one click tools. This whole rock my moto thing for rooting 4.2.2 looked intimidating. Glad I was able to keep root with pwnmymoto.
I do think it's kinda funny. I had jelly bean and Google now since August 2012. Everyone of my friends this spring kept trying to show me the new features. I'm like Ahh they're not new! Alas my payback has arrived. My ppl with gs4s are all like kit kat neener neener. Least I can be all like verizon grandfathered unlimited data neener neener!
I wonder if the day will come when sbfs can be released earlier and more available?
How are these people who manually updated and bricked their phones getting replacements? Must be bc of the non rooted folks who bricked just by simply updating. Either way I'm glad it's covered.

If you're attempting to flash the update manually you must do so twice. The first pass will update the bootloader and recovery perhaps a couple other smaller things. Regardless the main update is the second pass through. If you haven't applied the update twice from your SD Memory you can likely repair it yourself. Worst case just run the 4.4 sbf...

AT&T forced update causing S4 to brick themselves.

Apparently there is an update AT&T is forcing that is causing massive amounts of phones to crash with a "No Sim Card Found, Restarting..." error message. Then you get "Emergency Calls Only".
I was told this by the in store warranty department at AT&T today when there were several people in front and behind me with the exact same issues. I reflashed, rebooted, got a new SIM card...nothing! Still here now with a phone that wont make or receive calls waiting for a new one.
The only fix AT&T is aware of? Get a replacement!
What update? Post a screen shot of your "About device".
Good luck with the replacement device.

You'd have to downgrade. It's easier to flash the 4.4 keeproot OTAs, the nb1 and then nc1, or even just a 4.4.2 custom ROM.

I could only delay the so many time that it finally upgraded this afternoon. I lost my root.
The only reason that I root is simply to be able to tether. I'm not interested in custom ROMs, etc. So, in my situation, is there a more direct (simpler) method to get me back to tethering on 4.4.2?
Thanks in advance!

update for GSM
hey!Im currently using this phone on a gsm carrier. .anyway i can update the phone directly by putting it in CDMA mode or something?Or do i need to wait for a RUU to flash? Thanks!
Has anyone been able to get the ota update from verizon ?
I went back to completely stock 4.4.4 rom with no system roms removed, stock 4.4.4 recovery and I flashed back to 4.4.4 firmware and the verizon ota updates keeps coming up that I have the latest software.
I know its out because verizon itself even shows it on the net going over the update in detail. They even show you can also get the update through the htc sync software by plugging your m8 in to yuour computer usb port and downloading the update. Which the htc sync software keeps showing no update either.
It would show a repair software option though which I tried that knowing I would still have s-off even if they did relock my bootloader because I could change my cid and use htc dev to unlock that if I needed to.
Anyone have any luck going back to stock and taking the LP ota from verizon ?

Probably. HTC's update page still says that it's in the "3 - Certification stage of the Android Lollipop Release."
Although Mo Versi did say to expect it the first week of March. So must be close.
I just ordered an m8 from Verizon and I really hope it didn't come with lollipop.

Mo Versi replied this morning: "It's approved, you should receive the OTA soon. Thanks!"
Pretty sure one site saw that the lollipop documentation was up and just assumed the ota was released and then all the other sites just copy and pasted it and now its a runaway train. And it being approved is not the same as the update being pushed out. Pretty sure we got played as far as getting it today.
