[Q] Mount Internal Storage of Phone for using it as a mass storage device - General Questions and Answers

Hi I am using Galaxy SIII device with internal storage of 16 GB. Internal storage of device has two partitions which are probably partitioned as ext2/ext3. I can see the partitioned in mass storage mood. however i can't access it and it shows 0 bytes size. How can I access the internal storage from Windows operating system in mass storage mood ?
Thanks

You can't access the Ext partitions by using windows. You may be can format them using a partition manager but its not possible to mount the storage, as windows will only READ the first partition of a mass storage device

[Q] Odd internal memory setup ?

I have a question about my new T-Mobile G2x 2.2.2
I have a 16 gig sdCard (formatted as NTFS) The phone see's the sdCard fine as a 16 gig card. My question(s) are:
1) Is it ok to format the sdCard as NTFS or should I use Fat32 with multi-partitions instead ?
2) My phone seems to be installing apps and games to its internal memory, even tho I am telling it to install to my sdCard. When I run the program called App2SD which allows you to move your apps from the internal phone memory to the installed sdCard, it is showing me that I have 3 storage locations !
#1 - Main internal phone memory with 1.46 GB's
#2 - sdCard with 5.45 GB's ??
#3 - My real sdCard with 16 GB's
It is installing everything to that #2 internal (fake) sdCard.
I know the phone has like 6 GiGs internal doesn't it ? so why is it splitting it into main memory and some type of sdCard ??
I only want it to have the main phone memory and my REAL sdCard of 16 GB's.
Ok I know I am making this more confusing than it is, but I think you all understand what I am asking :O)
What is wrong here ??
Thanks so much!
John

It's just the way the phone is partitioned. Not much you can do about it unless you either root or install a cm7-based rom.
Even if you root, the solution isn't perfect and it breaks USB mass storage mounting to your computer.

Sorry I didnt make it clear. My phone is rooted and NvFlashed CWM 5.x
So what are my options now ? Also, what is USB mass storage ? I see it in the settings, but not sure what it is.
Thanks

About the best you can do is to swap the mount points of your internal "sdcard" and your actual removable sdcard. You do this by editing the /system/etc/vold.fstab file. You can't rename the mount points to anything other than what they already are (/mnt/sdcard and /mnt/sdcard/_ExternalSD) but you can swap them. So then your removable sdcard will be /mnt/sdcard and your internal "sdcard" will be /mnt/sdcard/_ExternalSD. Its not exactly accurate but at least all of your partitions are usable and your removable sdcard is used as your actual sdcard.
As for it breaking usb mass storage, when you plug your phone into your computer via USB it gives you a notification on your phone that says USB Connected. Normally if you select Mount then your sdcard is mounted to your computer and so you can browse the files on it. With the stock rom if you change the mount points of the SD cards then it won't mount your sdcards to your computer.
Ok I understand. I just dont get why this is like this. I mean I buy a 16 gig sdcard, but I can not install anything larger then 5 gigs on this phone since it doesnt install or allow me to move install to a real sdcard. What good is a phone with only 5 gigs of installable memory ??? Am I missing something ?
All my other phones, you install a sdcard and you get full access to it for installs and storage !

I'm totally in agreement. The edit above will allow you to install to your micro sdcard. Your other option is to install cm7 or a cm7-based rom since they utilize the external sdcard properly.

Ok, well I just installed [ROM][Gingerbread 2.3.3] Weapon G2x 2.6 [Better Ram Management!][9.30.2011] .... but since I have the same issue I assume it must not be a CM7-based rom. May I ask what rom you use or recommend please ?
Thanks again !

That's correct. Weapon is based on stock 2.3.3. I personally switch between cm7 (recent nigjtlies releases) and Ultimate G2X (its based on 2.2.2). With Ultimate I have my sdcard mount points edited so my external card is my main sdcard.

Ok ... so with Ultimate ROM I can edit the vold.fstab and all should be good ?
Faux's Nexus AOSP rom is damn near perfect and uses the external sd card perfecty for what your wanting. I too think whoever decided to partition the internal storage that way is a complete idiot! I just use that internal sdcard for my mp3 and movie files and store backups and roms/kernels on my external along with installed apps/games to my ext partition using link2sd.

That's what I do but it might be a more hassle-free solution to try a cm7-based rom or, as suggested, Fauxs aosp rom.

Is there a way to mount the device itself as mass storage(not sd card?)

When I try to mount the device as mass storage, it only shows up when I have an sd card inside, and without I get a message telling me to insert disk. Is there a way to mount the device itself as mass storage?
Wifi explorer pro or air droid as alternative. With total commander can make a Lan connection with windows xp/7

He means the internal memory. Can only mount the external sdcard in mass storage mode.

Correctly but the 4gb on internal sdcard i copied with total commander and Lan Plugin with Wifi. It's slower as copied in mass storage mode, but it works. On droid4 twice sdcards works in mass storage mode, photon q sh*t, after factory reset the internal memory cleared.

[Q] Mount internal storage to linux/mac

Hi!
I have a Samsung S4 GT-I9505 (LTE) rooted with Cyanogenmod cm-11-20140217-NIGHTLY. Recently I've delete accidentally my images from the internal memory. Now I'm trying to restore them. I have found the photorec program from testdisk but firstly I've to mount the internal memory to my computer. And that is a problem for me. Does anyone knows how to mount the internal storage of my device as mass storage in my computer in order to try the data recovery? Thanks.

Just use Undeleter (root). apk APP. It worked for me.

[Q] Is it possible to extend the internal app storage or swap the partitions?

Basically, I want more app space on the main app partition, rather than having stuff moved to phone storage or USB storage. I don't want to swap the internal storage for external SD card space, I want to change the internal partitioning, if possible. I know it can be done on other phones (e.g. Samsungs with .pit files) but can't find anything about this phone or similar.
Does anyone know how to go about this?

To make sure I'm understanding correctly, you want to merge the partitions mounted at /data and /sdcard to one partition that mounts at /data while then mounting the external SD to /sdcard?

Y'know, that's not exactly what I meant, but I think that might make sense!
All I meant was that I want to extend the "app storage" (i.e. default installation location for apps at /data/app/) using the rest of the internal space, currently recognised by the OS as "phone storage" and/or "USB storage". Am I right in ascertaining that what the OS calls "phone storage" is just /storage/sdcard0/ and "USB storage" /storage/usb/?

There is a way to swap your internal sdcard space for your external sdcard space. Essentially giving you up to 32 or 64 gb of space(forgot what max is) I will try to find the link for that. But that's all I know of. Not sure about your request.

Help! Partitioning my tablet Internal Storage went wrong.

Just got my new Tablet ME rainbow 7 quadcore. I rooted the device and it went fine. The tablet has 1gb phone/system storage and about 4gb of Internal storage. I partitioned the internal storage using mini tool partition wizard, followed the instructions carefully and its done.
But after I rebooted my device, somehow it got messed up. The Internal storage shows 0.00b and Misc of 20kb. I tried to access it again via my pc but when i turned on the usb storage on, I cannot access it. Need help to solve this issue
Is there a way to somehow recover my internal storage or repartition it again?
Thanks alot, hopefully anyone out there can help me.

Either you use the "format sd card/storage" function from android itself or u can use a custom recovery like ClockWorkMod to revive your storage.

Seems as there is not a custom recovery for your tablet released yet. Have you tried "Settings->Storage->Format SD" ?

tried it but no format option. I ask a friend and he said that maybe I partition and format my intrenal storage to a file system that my tablet does not recognized. As a result, my tablet does not read my internal storage. Tried to connect it also to my pc but when I choose option to turn on my usb storage, it just keep reading (circling icon).
Is there a way to repartition/format my internal storage using adb commands?
or other way to access my storage using my pc?
Thnx alot

Does mini tool partition wizard show up the partition?
EDIT: Most stock recoveries / bootloader have a option so format sd card / storage. Should be worth a try.
