download booster - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

is there a way, mod, port of anything that will re-enable or install the download booster that sprint, Verizon, and at&t yanked out of the phone before release?
you know its that thing that is supposed to download large files (over 30 megs) with both wifi and 4g.
coolness thanks

another radio question

Story: we all have HTC's at work. My service manager with the Touch Diamond (Verizon) is running a radio to use Sprint cell towers in our area (which outnumbers all others). I was wondering if that was possible for the G1. He's running WM 6.5 and Android on it.
No,there is not one for the g1...yet. But even if there was...i think it would require extra hardware
i was thinking to flash the radio he used the same way i did when i updated to the rc33 radio. i believe he has the latest radios for att, verizon, and sprint. that's why I decided to ask just in case.
thanks
Hey, if you have hardspl installed, and the rc29 DREAIMG.NBH on your sdcard, you can give it a shot and see and give us results(i need sprint even tho i have tmobile, only 3g in area is spring)
I'll give it a try on Tuesday. That was my main purpose in inquiring. Seeming as to how Sprint had like more cell towers than all others combined. And he's been using it with much satisfaction.

in this works i might have a heart attack, i really would love to get on the att towers for 3G
Sprint & Verizon use CDMA, T-Mobile & AT&T use GSM.
This, unfortunately, is not possible.
i just put a radio that was used for the Kaiser onto my dream and immediately i noticed a difference in the camera speed. almost as soon as i pressed the camera button it took the picture. i used radio 1.71.09.01 all you need to do is extract the .zip from the download, and open the .nbh in a hex editor. then i saved it as radio.img and placed it in the update.zip that contains the latest radio for the g1. then i resigned it and flashed it and voila i have a new faster radio on my phone. over the next few days i will run some speed tests on the local edge network and different radios to see which one works best in the stl area. but i am freaking excited to see that i tried something and it worked.
When I get to work I'll ask if he tried the ATT radio yet.

unfortunately we can't get 3G from at&t as they run 3g on the 850 & 1900 mhz range, and the G1 only gets edge in that range. the G1 is set to recieve hsdpa(3G) in the 1700 and 2100 range. kinda sucks but if at&t rolls out into the 1700(download) and 2100(upload) then we can steal 3G since t-mo has failed me in getting 3G into my area.
on a side note anybody have an updated roll out schedule for 3G in 2009 for t-mo?
apparently since i am using my phone as a tether right now i can't upload my update.zip. but following the steps above should work. or PM me your email and i should be able to send it to you that way
go to Kaiser ROM development and search for "ultimate radio thread" and you will find a list of all the radios that work on the kaiser, each of them are mirrored to an external site, and you can download from there
just installed the radio you sent me,internet on edge and gprs is faster, but drains battery quicker.... But now i have another reason to get a extra battery!
I'm not testing the battery life of the phone each time, just speed testing right after flash and taking a pic to test the lag on that. Those that wanna try new radios be warned I can't tell you what radio will work best for you, I can only tell you what works for me. All problems that you come across after flashing are your faukt. I do not want 100 PMs from people asking how to fix it just cause I tried it
would one be able to extract the radio from the iphone 3g if one had the latest firmware? i have much time, and don't mind give it a try. battery life isn't a problem. have a 1600mAH for lounge nights and the 2600 for wtf (work time fun!)
if you wanted to try it it couldn't hurt to see, we aren't going to get 3G unless we have t-mo 3G in the area. but i am curious to know what the radio from the iphone would do on this phone. try it oud and look for speed test in the market and use that to test the download and upload speed. it's what i have been using, and that way we get one program doing all the tests for us and so we should all have the same margin of error
I took a look at the iphone firmare, looks like you need a Mac. Most of the files that look like ones to use are in .dmg format, here's the link to the newest firmware http://www.iphonefirmware.com/firmwares-download/ to extract the files, just download the file, and change the extension to .zip
CDMA is much different as it uses a PRL, or Preferred Roaming List to decide what towers to connect to based on roaming agreements that carriers make. I remember when I was with Verizon, you could dial *226 SEND and it would connect you to a system that would download the latest PRL to your device. Sometimes it would result in better service, other times not. The equivalent to a PRL in GSM is stored in what I believe is a write-protected area of the SIM Card.
Sadley I have to agree with you Datruesurfer, but if I may the code for vzw, I worked there till Jan of this yr, is *228. Unfortunately you have read correctly, I did some research on this a while back when I bought my sim reader. All the info for the towers are stored on the sim for GSM/3G as some like to use, although part of the info is stored in the phone as part of the firmware, this I figured out, because I see 2 not one AT&T in my net ops at all times, and my sim is a brand new 3G compatible sim. The reason for this is one of them is for Edge/GPRS, and the Other has 3G also incorporated. Unfortunately as of the moment I can only connect to the one that is Edge/GPRS.

if i go out tomorrow i will get better internet(only option at home is to use my phone as a tether), and i will download and convert the .dmg to a .iso and have a look see. to be honest i don't know what to look for but i certainly wanna look around. this is the most work i have ever done with a phone. when i had my kaiser everyone else seemed to know a whole lot more than me and i felt left out and i never could help anyone, here in the dream forums i feel like i accomplish something every day
Well, I'm going to a 3g area today with the krazer radio...will report back results.
Before(from memory): download was about the same as edge...upload....well...you cant test that on a g1.
After: 149kb/s download
Edit: i also have a new sim card that customer care says its "made for 3g"...I guess we will see.

Simple mobile 4G on gingerbread update!

Hi for all of the Simple Mobile users. I ran into a difficulties trying to get 4G internet on my new LG G2x with gingerbread update. Per Simple mobile website, to make MMS and internet work all you have to do is create a new APN for Simple Mobile in apn settings (http://www.mysimplemobile.com/Support-Center-Phone-Programming.aspx#LG), move the green button to new APN, hit save, reboot your phone and you good to go. However it says there also that you CANNOT modify original T-mobile APN that is already created in the phone.
Now here is the problem with gingerbread update. After you rebooted your phone you can go ahead and use internet but right when you got your first page the green screen coming up with t-mobile customer service info and it says there that there is no connection with your phone, please call the number provided below. You might have luck actually getting on the first page but after that - nothing. What happens is after you start using internet your phone stop reading information from newly created APN and automatically switching back to the original default T-mobile APN. And it doen't matter if you reboot the phone or not, it will still make an automatic switch.
Now after discussing this issue here on the board, with great help from jboxer we came to a solution. Jboxer said nobody done this before so I figured why not try it and it actually worked.
All you need to do is root the phone using these tools:
1. Install Clockwordmod with NVFlash.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
2. root it with this zip
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214
I am a noob in flashing/rooting the phones but it took me only 20 min. to do this procedure. Right after I root the phone I went to menu - settings - wireless & networks - mobile network settings - access point names - hit on T-mobile APN and now you got the opportunity to modify it! The rest - do exactly what the simple mobile website tells you to do.
Hope this helps!

That is not how I said to fix it. Rooting the phone doesn't allow you to modify the default settings. In fact, rooting is not even necessary to do my fix. What I said to do is to flash my file that sets a new default APN for Simple Mobile. Here is the thread below. Sucks to be miquoted so badly.

lol. Well props for making a flashable fix (best method IMO)
I guess once rooted it allows the settings to stick? Others have had luck with APN managers from the market which backup and write custom APN entries which works.
So the problem is that the APN keeps defaulting to Tmobile and the solution is to somehow edit and Save the default Tmobile APN setting with information that pertains to Simple Mobile so that it sticks.
Glad its fixed either way.
another way to fix it is by going into lg hidden menu
dial 1809#*999#>KR Setting>Set KR Settings
this removes all of the apns including tmo's then u just put in the simple apn nd ur good to go

Rooting would not make a difference here. All rooting means is that apps can request superuser (root) permissions to make changes to the system, and the app that sets the apn never requests root access so rooting the phone would not do anything here. Simple Mobile users were always able to make a new apn (default apns can never be modified). The problem is when they reboot it goes back to TMO's settings. Have you tried rebooting yet. My fix sets a new default apn for Simple Mobile which can be set and stick throughout rebooting, etc.
Also, as stated in my other thread, my fix DOES NOT require root. It only requires that Clockworkmod Recovery be installed.
Dude,
I have been using SIMPLE MOBILE forever and not had the problem you are speaking of. Just follow the instructions on the SM website. Set up the new apn. When you reboot hold the volume button up while rebooting and you should be set. Could it be you aren't setting up the apn properly?
And on some of the ROMS you can edit the T-Mobile apn.

Speaking of Simple Mobile, do they allow using the Wifi hotspot feature on the G2x? I saw in the company's FAQ that tethering was not allowed on SM phones, but wasn't sure if that covered hotspotting as well.
I have a question for you guys, I just got an unlocked G2x to use on simple mobile that I haven't activated, On t-mobiles site it says it supports for 4G, but on simple mobiles site it says it's only approved for 3g data, my question is do I need to get the 3g $40 plan or $60 4g plan to get the most out of the data on this phone?
Do both plans give you the same volume of data (i.e., 500Mb, 1Gb, etc)? If so, go with the cheaper plan. The systems hardly ever let you get the full speed anyway. In Thailand I only get between 2 to 3Mbps usually and it is plenty fast.

I have ran into this problem. I recently obtained a G2X and SIMPLE Mobile SIM and account. I paid the $40 for the "3G" connection. However it seems that the speed is throttled to around 118kbps down. So I did some testing and found that forcing the phone to use "2G Only" allowed up to around 160kbps down. This is just insane! I have read where some people on SIMPLE Mobile 3G have been able to get around 1500-3000kbps but have no idea how they manage that. My Optimus V on Virgin Mobile's 3G averages around 600-1000kbps down. That is usable. The SIMPLE Mobile one is just crap. I hate to have to pay more for less, unless you count the unlimited talk in that, but I may be sticking with VM for a bit longer. Any ideas how I can get the speed up on the SM one without paying the $60/month?

I mainly use google voice for my text and such since I ported my number to GV and all. But I just tried sending a picture message to my other phone's actual number from my G2X without google voice and it sent, just took forever. As for sms though it has always worked. This is with my phone showing "4G".

Be sure not to pay the $12.99 for the SIM directly from SM. Go on amazon and buy one for about $1.99 or if you are a Prime member get the one I did for $2.49 w/ free 2-day shipping. Won't hurt to try with it being that cheap.

odd.. I just switched to the G2X and bought a new Sim card with 4g.
before I had an LG optimus T with the 3g and always got 3g speeds around 2000kbps
On the 4g with my G2X I get anywhere from 2000 to 5000kbps. The really odd thing is its either 4g or 2g. I'll be sitting at work and it will drop from 4g to 2g.. making me think "wtf happened to 3g"?
Another thing I noticed is the hand off between edge and 3g was much smoother. With the G2x It will often completely drop all connections, data and voice, then pop back up with the different speed.

Yeah SM is just stupid slow on "3G". I actually got faster speeds when I forced 2G only network. My wife's Samsung Gravity Smart also has the same speeds as my G2x. I am thinking of switching to the $30/month 5GB of 4G data w/ 100 minutes that T-Mobile offers just to try it out. I can use my GrooveIP to make/receive calls if need be.

Just be ready for super slow speeds if you don't pay for their "4G" package. I ran some back to back tests yesterday with my SIMPLE Mobile sim and a T-Mobile sim in my G2x.
SM "4G" 118kbps down/ 132kbps up
SM "2G" 159kbps down/ 131kbps up
TM "4G" #1 885kbps down/ 348kbps up
TM "2G" 207kbps down/ 133kbps up
TM "4G" #2 1505kbps down/ 524kbps up
all ran back to back. So even T-Mobile 2G is faster than SM 3G. lol

[Q] Family mobile

Hello all, i am a new owner of the sidekick4G, rooted w\clockwork. Well, my friend got a g2 and got family mobile from walmart. He has 4g and everything. Well, when i activated my phone i was told that internet was not available for this phone. After it was all hooked up i popped in my new sim and i have the 4g symbol but its like im capped at 100kb/s. Is there some way to get this phone working on 4g? I would hate to have to resell this phone just because of that. Thanks for any help. Sorry for the long story.
If you are rooted:
Change modem and test out signal and internet speeds or move to a different location and try doing so again with the same and/or different modem.
If not rooted:
Do the same thing without changing the modem.
This should be of some help.
Also was the phone used or brand new?
If you are rooted what rom?

Well, i know im in a good area, i used to have a G2 when they first came out and got 7mb+ in my house with 75-85dbm signal 24hrs a day, anyway, the sidekick im on now was used, it seems to be in near mint condition. It is rooted and i just did the oneclick root + recovery but i have no sd card so i cant flash clockwork or any roms yet. Ill try messing with the settings in a min. I did see on family mobiles website where they have the apn settings for "non-familymobile phones" but i need to wright the old ones down incase i lose net all togeather. I also saw at the botttom of the page it says "sidekick4g does not work for data, but it is right now... its like im capped or something. My network says hspa, hsdpa. neway well see what we can do

FoxFi Free Tethering App

I tried to download this but I got a message saying my carrier (at&t) doesn't support this app.
Is anyone able to use it on the AT&T One X or know of a similar app?
Or do I just have to download one of the available mods in the dev section?

Install MarketAccess. This app allows you to spoof other carrier markets. Spoofing T-Mobile 310260 should pretty much give you full market access.

No go for mine
I know this is an old thread but I'll try anything at this point. I've tried a bunch of stuff so far. I've downloaded a .apk that was supposed to remove ATT's block on the tethering which didn't work. I then tried to install CM10 which goes through all the install motions in TWRP and reboots. After reboot it sits on the CM logo forever never booting into CM10 so I had to restore it to stock. I've tried apps in the market and of course the Att lock blocks them as well. So I figured I'd try this one and it doesn't work on my HOX either.
All I can say is that ATT and/OR HTC have got this tethering thing all locked down this time. I had no problems installing CM or getting the hotspot unlocked on all my previous devices... Kinda regretting getting this HOX now. hotspot worked great on my Inspire and my HD2
I tried to install the FoxFi from the market but nothing showed up in the search results so I downloaded that market spoof which allowed FoxFI to showup..... Installed FoxFi and it activates the hotspot but when I try to connect with my Laptop it says it cant connect.
We are in a unique situation here and not really sure what to do to get my phone to act as a hotspot. Very Frustrating!
The Aluminum skin on our coach blocks most if not all campground wifi signals from coming in, yet my phone still has a good signal so I figured I could just use my phone as the device to get online while inside the coach. Can't sit outside at night, the skeeters will carry you off. Rains most of the day so it makes it very difficult to get online.
We've been with ATT for so long that the geico caveman is going to join ATT so we do not want to change our plan in anyway.. (We're grandfathered into a really old plan from like 7 years ago that is $40 a month...This new plan they want to sell us is $200 a month with the hotspot built in..... wowzers!
Any suggestions?

I know this is an old thread but I'll try anything at this point. I've tried a bunch of stuff so far. I've downloaded a .apk that was supposed to remove ATT's block on the tethering which didn't work. I then tried to install CM10 which goes through all the install motions in TWRP and reboots. After reboot it sits on the CM logo forever never booting into CM10 so I had to restore it to stock. I've tried apps in the market and of course the Att lock blocks them as well. So I figured I'd try this one and it doesn't work on my HOX either.

t-mobile modem.img vs. global modem.img

Gang,
I finally managed to convert my op8 to global and had some help through the geniuses of XDA.
Now, before I hard brick my phone, is the tmobile modem.img easy to flash over the global modem.img?
Guys, school me on this before I end up doing too much and over-thinking this. It will need cohesive and concise tutorial for the sake of this -- can't afford to have a hard brick.
Thanks!
UPDATE: never mind. I fastbooted the modem.img and the signal pulls BETTER than the global build.

Hi there, would you be so kind as to post the process you used to switch to the T-Mobile modem? I'm on global and would like to try the T-Mobile modem to see if it improves my speeds that have been very poor. Do you have the modem file?

Hi there,
Yes, the modem file does pull the network better than the global builds (weird but it is what it is)
Here's my setup:
1. put modem.img in the minimal adb fastboot directory (make sure you download minimal adb fastboot v1.43 -- it's the latest)
2. put your phone in fastboot mode
3. use this command, word for word: fastboot flash modem modem.img
NOTE: After this process is done (should take a few minutes to process), reboot your phone and surf the net on your phone to test your network speeds.

would you mind providing a copy of the modem you pulled and what version was is from?

i tried it and i get the same results as a different tmobile modem. im on metropcs and my phone doesnt recognize the sim card but gets data service. 2 different speedtests show about 35mbps down. no phone calls though. i tried removing, rebooting and reinstalling the sim card, and swapping it on the other modem i tried but the sim card still wasnt showing up. crazy because i can swap between modems from global or euro with no issues. im going to try the twrp backup someone else uploaded

OK. All good! I honestly hope that metropcs doesn't use different modem files, even though they're a tmobile subsidiary. I haven't been with metropcs for a while. Great service but I needed a financing option.

i dunno what the issue is but it is really odd. i got my op8 from swappa and its the 12gb model so i know tmobile didnt have their hands on it. i smoke through data so after about 40 gigs its even more noticeable of a slowdown when im in areas with a lot of people or times when a lot of people using their data heavily. i am strongly considering tmobile because metro lowered their "5g unlimited" to $40 a month with some bonuses and for a few bucks more i think not suffereing the intermittent slowdowns would be nice.

Aw really? Metro is starting to throttle now, eh? I'm grandfathered in their "One" plan -- now renamed as Magenta. My bill is about 85 a month since I have insurance on my phone. Before you make a switch, make sure you do the number port BEFORE (caps for emphasis) you cut your service. I'm sure you know/knew this/that. =)

ove been using metro for a long while and theyve alwyas had the fine print *unlimited until 30ish gigs nad after that you will be deprioritized for tmobile customers. i pay 50 still and thats why i want to switch. metro lowered the unlimited plan to 40 and its a joke if you actually use your phone. oh and they limit streaming video speeds to 480p at best from what i can tell

Tmobile starts the "slow down" after the 50 GB mark. I've only went over a few times. I try to do all my app updates and OTA's at home, especially OTA's.....

50 gigs doesn't seem so bad. i download way too much and my phone is my main internet connection. ive tried sevel different modems and the speedtests are around 20 - 40 mbps. sometimes it gets close to 50 but nothing really like tmobile users report just from lte.

most of the heavy lifting is done via wifi at home. I would rather have a huge allotment of data when I need it the most. This mindset came from when I "was" in-between jobs -- I had to budget hard core.

i understand completely. i really cant trust myself with another internet connection. i had to rely on my phones data several times when i was in-between opportunities. then on the other hand with cable internet i spent way too much time gaming or whatever. now its pointless for me to have a seperate connection. i dont need the fastest connection for my personal life anymore. but the sudden slowdowns when metro gets dereprioritized is annoying and i thought having 5g would put me ahead of the curve even if it was piggybacking on tmobile. i guess i have a more stable connection when im in an elevator or large building but i still lose service sometimes so i dont know if metro even is giving me 5g since they started a new package. maybe ill call ask if i can get in on that plan

Thank you! I downloaded the modem and will look through some guides on the rest of the process. I'm an IT pro but phone mods are not my comfort zone.
I know it probably seems like a stupid question to those who do this regularly but I don't want to brick or damage my phone: Do I need to do anything with my phone prior to doing this? It is as I purchased it from OnePlus (Model IN2015), with the latest global update (10.5.12.IN21AA). Is my bootloader already unlocked? Do I need to root the phone? I haven't rooted or jailbroke an Android/iPhone for about 10 years lol.
Would I just be better off to downgrade and get on the T-Mobile software line as mentioned in another post?

Since you purchased it direct from oneplus, I'm going to say that the phone *should* have an unlocked bootloader. If you boot into fastboot, the phone will display its device lock status -- it's the last line down -- it will say locked or unlocked.
Yes, you will need to root your phone to flash the modem file.
I hope this helps. Message me if you need more info.
Not to be off topic or anything,.but if you use a vpn TMO can't throttle your video cause they can't see it so you'll get your full hd vids on top of them not selling your info and browsing history
I recommend torguard. Their app is complete utter trash but their service is great. Look for discount codes somewhere if you're interested but any vpn will work
