Nexus 5 - Proximity Sensor problem - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys! This is something that took me a certain time so I'd like to share it to make it worth...
I was having some problems with my new Nexus 5 (D821):
- Screen never turned off during calls;
- Touch screen active during calls.
So the phone was hotter than it should be during the calls and after the calls I always discovered my ear had activated a lot of things on the touch…
Then, I was questioning myself if this would be a problem cause by software or hardware. As a microcontroller addicted, I know how trick it is to distinguish between a firmware and a hardware problem... and started to investigate the problem with a few steps:
1) Used some apps to grab the proximity sensor value (like this play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gmail.macromax.vdo.sensors)
- The value was stuck in 5.00000cm;
2) Tried different ROMs and kernels with the same result;
3) Downloaded the Nexus 5 Service Manual;
4) Downloaded the sensor (Avago APDS-9930) datasheet.
So based on the new information, I have made a little experiment to make sure the problem was the hardware:
I started the app to monitor the sensor and used my TV remote control to emit the IR pulses, as I assumed the sensor had a problem with the IR emitter. Than the app started to show some measurements… confirming the sensor was the problem (more specifically the emitter).
So, I disassembled the phone getting access to the sensor and this is what I got:

}
The sensor was carbonized!!! There is no IR emitter anymore!!!
This is the shot from the original sensor:
It seems like the assembly production process of the phone has reached a too high temperature or has caused a mechanical damage!
Moreover, this is the biggest problem; my phone would not be the only one to have been damaged!
Hope this can help saving someone else time…:laugh:

[APP][2.3+]AUTO ON DEMO and Infinite , to Turn screen ON in automatic mode

Hi guys again
and this is my second and last apk, hope you enjoy it too

Simple and powerfull apk to TURN ON the screen in AUTO MODE:
Examples:
when you open the cover of your device,it should always TURN ON the screen, right?
when you take it out from your pocket/bag, the same, why do you have to push a button to TURN ON the screen?
simply bypassing your hand above it when the SCREEN is OFF
.... your imagination usage it is the limit(fliping it to turn ON,...)
It is based on PROXIMITY SENSOR mainly, and with an special algorithm to avoid FALSE PROXIMITY SENSOR changes, specially when inside pockets or bags(That is why it has a 1 second delay ;])
But if your device has also a LIGHT SENSOR you can also use it to improve acurracy to almost 99% when your device is inside your pockect or bag, avoiding falses PROXIMITY SENSOR changes an so saving your precious battery!!!
AUTO ON only works when you SCREEN is OFF!!so also save some precious battery!!! and do not intercept with Calls!!!
Due to so many diferents SENSOR TYPES on devices, the SENSOR RESPONSE maybe to slow, so a VIBRATE OPTION is include on the settings and it is very useful to "feel"the first times how your SENSOR works.
As with aZephyr, there is aINFINITE version(This Demo version is limited to 100 uses), so if you like it, and your SENSOR works as expected you can pay me a beer for my job ;]
Happy New Year

[Q] GPS not working

Hi,
I experiencing problems with my gps, as it seems to not be working. Don't think it has ever actually has been working, that all my positions where retrieved trough network.
Tried the following:
- upgraded to latest OS(4.4.3),
- updated all my apps
- tested in safe mode
- reset to factory defaults.
And it still doesn't retrieve any position, which makes me concerned it is hardware related. Attached a screenshot from my gps app and version of my nexus 5 Location is set to: High Acuracy
Anyone have any tips??

I had a similar issue with my Nexus 5. No amount of rebooting/reinstalling was helping, until I realised one corner of my phone was pried open, probably when I dropped it the day before. I pushed it back in, and all of a sugged GPS is back to normal.
So I'm afraid your problem sounds like a hardware issue. Did you drop it recently?

Vibration problem

My Moto G 1 st gen has problem with its vibrator as vibration sometimes work, sometimes not. I went to some local repair shop and they said that vibrator is fried and that it can't be fixed and that is to close to the camera so it can't be removed from the motherboard. I would like to fix it and I think it is possible as it is still working but more often it doesn't work. Any recommendations?
Even I too faced this issue
Vibrator some times works some times won't
Are you using flipcover just incase...
If ur device under warranty give it for rma
Edit : use vibration app from play store when vibrator doesn't work give a slight tap on right top corner vibrator works again I did this few times when vibration didn't work
Now vibration works... so far no issues
Though I cannot confirm both of our case are same issue
Could you give the link for the app as there are multiple vibration apps? Also, do somebody have an image of opened moto g to show where the part for vibration is?

Problem was solved by replacing vibration motor.
Hello v3nom1. Did you replace the vibrating motor yourself, or where was the repair done? I have the same problem. I have the phone (dual SIM version) 8 months and the vibration stopped working two days ago for no apparent reason. I opened the phone to check the motor - like the picture above - but the motor looked fine.
If you replaced the motor yourself, how did you do it?
Thanks for your advice.

Issue with Auto-Rotation (Accelerometer)

Hey,
I am running the CPH2025_11_A.18 firmware. I noticed that the screen rotation is very unreliable in basically every app I've been using ( Youtube, Chrome, Google Photos etc.). So I checked the sensors with multiple Apps
and noticed that my phone thinks its drifting towards the left (X-Axis) when laying flat on the ground. Factory resetting my the phone and using the Google Maps calibration feature didnt't work. Before returning my phone I want
to make sure its not something software/firmware related. Could you guys comment on your auto-rotation experience and the sensors (f.e. using the in-built spirit-level App).
In this positon my phone thinks its laying flat on the ground:

My phone doesn't have this problem. It's rotating just fine. My Firmware version is CPH2025_11_A.14
I think you should return the phone to your seller for service.
Good luck,

Half black Screen + Responsive Display ---- Error Source unknown

Hey!
I could need some help to narrow down the possible error sources and thus conclude if I should try to repair my phone or not.
Ath the end of the post is short video of the actual state (YouTube-Link).
Some quick details:
- no submersion in water
- no visible fall damage (always was in a Spigen Tough Armor Case, but I dropped it from time to time)
- no cracks on the screen itself, always used a screenprotector
- the problem developed gradually over the last 2 weeks: Only the lower half of the phone was affected, horizontal lines of different brightness appeared (also some flickering). This would disappear from time to time, sometimes linked to the manually changing of the screenbrightness
- now the lower half is completly black, but still responsive. Even that disappeared 2-3 times, but now it seems to be stuck in that mode
- additonally if you're out of the lockscreen the upper half goes black as well
- complete display is responsive
- USB-Debugging should be enabled
Things I've tried and didn't help: 1. Wiping of the Cache 2. Factory Reset 3. Safe Mode 4. Some suggested options mentioned in articles
What I am trying to figure out: Software or Hardware problem (Right now it seems like it must be Hardware) and which Hardware is affected and needs to be replaced.
Any help would be appreciated, but I know that no one has psychic abilities to look at/in my phone from a distance. So thanks anyway!
The video:
The screenprotector is adjusted (cut) to fit the frontcamera. No damage concerning the phone
