I currently have a Nexus 5 (I was previously using it through MetroPCS), however I recently ordered a "Tablet (data-only)" sim card from T-mobile and tried to get it working. At the time, the T-mobile rep told me that it SHOULD work. However, after running around in circles for a few days with them, I've finally found out that it does not work (...YET!).
When I try to get the Nexus 5 to use this SIM card, it just keeps giving me a "Sign into network" notification, and never lets me use any data. (and no amount of signing into my account from my phone has helped)
According to the T-mobile rep, "this SIM card will ONLY work with a tablet". However, this is Android, and there's not much difference between a phone, and a tablet. There must be some kind of setting I can change to get my phone to think it's a tablet, or at least to get it to use this tablet-only sim card!
So I'm wondering what do I have to do to trick my phone into using this data-only sim card?
Things you may need to know:
I'm already rooted
I'm running stock Android 4.4.2
Lastly, because I'm sure people will ask: "Why do you care?, why don't you just get a standard phone-sim card?!?"
So, preemptively, here is my answer: "Because, they're giving me a data-only plan for $10/month! (and $20/month after the first year). AND, if I were to switch to a phone plan, the CHEAPEST they will allow me to have is $50/month, which is HUGE! That's a $40 difference per month!"

this is wrong. they absolutely know that youre using a tablet, and a bunch of other things about your device as soon as it connects to their network. in order for them to let your device use their network, they need this info. and wont let any device connect to their network without the proper info. the network isnt some generic highway of data, its owned by tmobile, and only gives access to it if tmobile allows it.
anyways, i have a question, how much data do they give you for $10 a month?

They give you 1GB of data for $10/month, however it jumps to $20 after the first year. Seems pretty cheap to me.
I'm still holding out hope that there must be some sort of hack, or maybe editing my build.prop or something like that to trick it into believing it's a Nexus 7 or something :-\

na, wont work, build.prop edits. there are other files it reads, not the build.prop. it also creates files in root. which is funny, when you delete them, they reappear within 5 minutes. plus there is stuff in our radios as well, that tmobile reads, that we cant get to.

anyways, $10 then $20 for 1gb data is not very cheap! lol, i use 1gb data within 2 days on my nexus 5(lte)

What about changing the IMEI number? I believe that can be done, and I know when I was talking with a service rep, he was talking about how their system was registering my IMEI number. Maybe that's how they know it's a Nexus 5 and not a tablet? :-\
Also, you mention that 1GB/month for $10/month isn't cheap? (btw it's 1GB for $10, 3GB for $20, 5GB for $30) How do you figure? I know you're saying you can burn through it in a day, I'm sure I could too streaming netflix or something! That isn't the point though. Can you find a cheaper standalone data plan elsewhere? If so, where? I'd love to know
I have found some hope!
After doing further research, I found this article, which supports my IMEI theory.
http://www.cnet.com/news/using-a-tablet-sim-to-turn-a-smartphone-into-a-data-only-device/
In fact, according to the article, if I can find somebody with a 4g enabled tablet, I should hopefully be able to stick my sim card into their device, activate it, then pop the sim card back into my device, and hopefully that will work. (In the article she states that it works with verizon, wont work with at&t, and may, or may not work with T-mobile.)
Sadly, I don't believe I know of anybody with a 4G enabled tablet. Therefore my only option I know of would be to find a way (using root of course), to spoof, or change my IMEI number, which I'm sure should prove to be extremely fun! :silly:
Now I'm off to research that and I'll report back here what I find. :fingers-crossed:
Just go into the store with your sim and pop it into one of their tablets to activate it

That's not a bad idea, thanks!
Although, what I might do, just to be thorough (and if the sales rep is watching me like a hawk, since they might not like me shoving my SIM into the demo unit), is go into one of the stores and instead, write down the IMEI number of one of their tablets (which would be simple to just pick up the tablet, and go to settings>about device>status), and then, make my phone's IMEI number match that. That way I think it's less likely to have problems (it's possible that if the IMEI number changes, that will cause them to turn the service back off).
I dunno, I might try my thing first, and then, when that doesn't work, I'll try the more invasive, sticking my SIM in their tablet. Thanks for the idea
It's finally over!
Ok thank you for trying to help me but I finally resolved this problem.
Previously it was caused by a t-mobile rep having me order a tablet-only sim card for my phone.
I WAS going to try and change my IMEI number to match a tablet because (and I still believe) that would have tricked t-mobile into thinking my phone was a tablet, however, after much digging I have found the following which A: suits my needs, and B: no longer requires any trickery
I'm going with the T-mobile prepaid $30 unlimited text and data plan. With that you get:
100 minutes (10 cents a minute thereafter)
Unlimited Text
5GB of data, thereafter they throttle you, just like anybody else does
all for $30 bucks a month. BUT, you have to have a phone that you own, it can't be something under contract etc.
It is WAY more data than I need, but it's the cheapest they offer so I'll take it!
I should note: you MUST get your SIM card from Walmart if you're going with this plan, just FYI
Thanks again for trying to help me.

Well, a T-mobile tablet only sim doesn't work in a phone. They're not going to suddenly "allow" it.

I was also duped by a tmobile sales person. Telling me a data only sim card will work on a phone. Alot of hassle and back and forth with customer support, and advanced tech support, i found that it cant work. not sure why tmobile doesnt allow this. I only wanted data on my note 3 that i gave to my kids after i got a one plus one. I have not tried putting the sim card inside a tablet to activate it then putting back in mine. Kinda erks me that tmobile reps are not properly trained and that i cant just pop the data only sim into a phone

Thanks so much for posting this. I'm really anxious to see if this works out for you. I'd like to use a data only sim in the new Note 4.
Tablet data works on phones!
I have a nexus 4 and 5. I have the plan described by this guy. it works flawlessly in the 4. Also tested in a moto g. The nexus 5 is the only device I've tested that has this issue. Don't colose this off as impossible! it works, there must be a way!

I was a Straight Talk customer for several months until my Nokia E71 was permanently deactivated for "excessive data usage" on their unlimited plan. What I'm left with now is a $200 Blackberry-like PDA with no actual phone capabilities. It amazes me that they can legally cripple my phone this way.
My understanding of it is that the phone now has what basically amounts to the GSM eqivalent of a bad ESN. Anyone happen to know any way to turn this back into a viable phone again? This particular phone uses a SIM card and apparently runs on the AT&T network so I'm hoping there's some way to unlock it to work with AT&T or T-Mo.
Most, if not AT&T phones will use the ST sim without unlocking it...its like using a Simple Mobile sim on a T-Mobile phone. Usually you can just put it in, change your APN's and you're good to go. With ST though, I believe they tie your SIM card with your e71 since they know people just really want the sim card and plans and not their phones. If you're e71 is blocked, I don't think you can unblock it. Or maybe you can call in and say "hey, I bought this phone of craigslist" and if they mention its on a blocked list just play dumb and that you had no idea...mind you you have to pretend like you're a different customer, maybe put the account in someone elses name?
---------- Post added at 11:14 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:02 AM ----------
actually see if your SIM card has been deactivated, if not then you can just put it in an AT&T phone and you should be good...if it has then yeah, I would just say I got this phone from someone on craigslist and I want to activate it. They should unblock it if its for a new customer...hopefully.
I've tried putting the ST SIM in an unlocked T-Mo phone to no avail. After ST deactivated me, I did a ****load of Google-ing and I'm pretty sure people have tried your Craigslist method with no luck. I've read hints that it "might" be possible to de-brand it, but that it'd be a pretty advanced operation. I just figured that if anyone could actually pull it off, XDA would be the most likely place to find them.
I'm pretty sure I used the craigslist method and it worked for me, but I can't remember for sure. I bought a broken e71 off of ebay and just registered that IMEI number, mind you I can't remember if the IMEI was blocked or not so maybe thats why I didn't have any problems. And even if other people tried with no avail you should try regardless, who knows, maybe it will work with you.
wondering if i can get any help around here. One day my sidekick suddenly stopped working. Meaning no signal or service of any. I can log onto wifi and still use the internet but i cant make text messages, calls, ect. I rooted it and flashed Glorious Overdose, but the problem is still there. I'm with tmobile and idk why this doesnt work. It reads the SIM card. because when i take it out it has that sign at the top of the screen saying "insert SIM". anyone know what i can do? i know its not my SIM card because it works with other phones. its something with this phone.
ok.. so the problem is.... i bought the phone off someone on craigslist. and the phone worked for 5 months. then it finallly locked up. ^^^^ so i called tmobile and they said that the person that i bought the phone off of did not pay for their first month's service so they blocked the phone from tmobile use. so i'm wondering is there anything i can do to make it work for tmobile.... if not. just unlock it and use it for tmobile?

SIMs also tend to burn out/stop working, visit your local tmo store and ask them to take a look at your SIM, they should be able to tell, and if it's burnt out they'll give you a new one. Have you tried this SIM in another phone since it stopped working in this phone?

yeah, that sucks, the person might have agreed to a contract just to get the phone for free, then turn around and sell it. whatever happened, it sounds like maybe the only way to use it on Tmobile is to pay the person's outstanding bill
do you have a contract with Tmo? the only other thing i can think of at the moment is unlocking the phone to work with another carrier, like Simple Mobile, or whatever carriers would activate it.
i am definitely not an expert on how these things work, just trying to throw out ideas. i had never really thought about this, i just knew that when a phone is reported stolen, the carrier can block the phone so it can't be used on their network. i bought a Sprint phone off CL once, and i made sure to call Sprint and check the esn # to make the sure the phone was valid or whatever.

yeah but seeing that the phone is a SIM use, and the phone was working for 5 months till now, i didnt see it as an issue buying off craigslist at the point. I have the $25 GoPhone Plan that gives me 250 minutes and unlimited texting. I currently have the Pantech P7040P. I hate this phone and I want to get an android. I tried to put my sim card in an HTC Vivid 4G LTE phone and it didn't work. The phone did not detect the sim card. I was wondering if its even possible to have an android phone with the current plan I am using. I was thinking of either an HTC Inspire or Motorola Atrix.
Answer, and another question.
blackhawkrisen,
I think you can use it with another phone (I'm pretty sure about it!), it could be that the HTC Vivid you tested it on had some connector pins broken.
You could also check if your sim card has any damages.
It could also be that the HTC Vivid had a sim lock.
Do you know that?
Please answer me, so I can help you.

Its your sim card, the orage one that come with the gophones are lovked to that gophone for 6 months.
Go to the att store tell them you need a new sim for your gophone account bc you lost your. They will provide you a free blue sim card that will work in your vivid.

Sorry for the late reply, thanks for the help. That might have been it, but I just recently got my sim card switched to a normal blue one. The HTC Vivid and the person was kind of shady. I currently do not have a data plan only voice and text. Would this be why the phone didn't detect the sim? I wanted to know if I could buy a smartphone without having to pay for data and keep my current plan with a smartphone.

No, because your plan only includes voice and text.
The phone doesn't matter.
If you use data on your phone it will be very expensive!

If you have that blue sim-card you can put it in any phone you want, as long as it hasn't got a lock on it. (Then you may only use that phone with that service-provider). So if you can buy a nexus, I would buy it. (But it doesn't matter because when you buy a phone the are ALWAYS unlocked)

Thank you so much, someone just offered to sell me a Motorola Atrix and I was wondering if I could use that with the same plan?
First of all, I'm a Sprint user, so the concept of sim cards is kind of foreign to me.
Just picked up an Atrix 2 for a friend, rooted, flashed CM10.1 from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2121029
Rebooted, everything's dandy. Turned it off, put in their sim card, and I still have no service. So I poked around, and under Settings -> More... -> Mobile Networks -> Network Operators, if I choose either Search networks or Choose automatically, I get an error. I don't have the sim card now, so I can't say, but one of them was "Error while searching for networks" I think and the other "Can't connect to this network right now"
I'm not sure how to tell if it's recognizing the sim card, or 2, if there's something I have to do to get service.
I'd rather not flash it back to factory if I can help it. I was hoping someone here could help. Thanks!

Did you ever try it on stock? if yes, did it work there?
Also, what carrier are you using, and if it is not whatever your phone was sold for (ATT if it has the symbol on the bottom, but not sure if you are in the US. If it is not the same carrier, it must be unlocked, but it should have asked for a code. Does it give you a message saying no sim card ever, or does it just not work at all?
I know that was a lot of questions, but there are a lot of things that it could be.
Also, try just blowing in the sim card slot and stuff to clear it of any lint or crap that could be in there.

Whoa. Brighton. I'm in Milford. Crazy. No, I didn't try it stock, but I just RSD'd it back to stock, so I'll try that next. I don't have the sim card with me. She had to put it back in her phone so she could have something. I'll try it in a bit.
Yeah, it's ATT. And when the sim card was in it, if I remember correctly, it just said "No Service". Before I flashed it to stock, it DID say "No SIM Card" So I guess it's seeing it to an extent. I'll try stock and report back.
Do I need to have the sim card in it once so it registers on ATTs system or something, then I can CM the thing? Like I said, I'm on Sprint, so sim cards are new to me. Thanks!

Thanks!

LOL, I'm Milford too sort of. Milford mailing, Brighton Township, but more people have heard of Brighton around here, so I use that.
Anyways, yeah that means it's seeing it and it is probably an apn problem. you NEED the sim card for any network stuff to work. let me know about stock, it could just bee that cm did something dumb, but my guess is you need the right apns for ATT, which I could give you. What phone is the sim from? it might not work with the A2 if it is not made for smartphones. once is stock, I would just bring it to the store if it doesn't work, and tell them to activate it, and they will give you a free sim.

The current phone is a Huawei something. Fusion? Fusion 2? I'm not sure. But it's Android, but it's 2.2 or 2.3. It's a pretty lame phone. I'll get back over there and grab the sim in a few hours, and see what it does.
So in theory, stock Atrix 2 rom, and her sim, it should just work, right?

It Should, but might not. if it does, keep the sim in and flash cm again if you want. if not, post a screenshot of settings--about phone--status
or just post the info of network through Mobile network state, and make sure the imei shows a number not some error.
also check under wireless & networks--Mobile Networks--Access Point Names and make sure stuff seems normal there. (should have ATT stuff of some kind)

Oh, I forgot to add that to the OP. I did look at the IMEI and there was a long string there. Not sure what it means, but...

That's fine. it is basically the serial number of sorts for the radio chip. it is distinct for all phones, and is how it is identified internationally for carriers and unlocking and such. sometimes with broken harware/firmware this can become unknown or something, so just wanted to make sure it wasn't a problem. I would say there is a chance you need to get it activated from att. you can't totally share a sim card, as they want ou to add the phone to the plan, but if the old one is going away, it would be worth just bringing it in and asking for a new card.

That would probably be the problem then. I need to have att add it to the plan? I wonder if I can call them and if I'd need any account info. Dammit

what is the background of the plan. like what did you have before this phone plan wise, and what are you trying to do now. my guess i things are not set up right, which could end up costing you more money if you have an old plan or something. let me know, and I can see if anything is glaring, but you probably have to have it activated or something, I remember calling to activate i or something, but I am not sure exactly what the process was.
the only info the will likely want is the last 4 digits of your SSN (or whoever's the account is under), the IMEI, and maybe something from the sim card.

Her grandpa's plan. She's currently using the Huawei, and in the end, I want her running the A2 with CM. I have nothing to do with the plan, technically. I'm just trying to help out. I'll get that info, and give them a call before I try. Or while I try.

LOL, classic, anyways, glad you got it to work for a few days at least!
Hey everyone let me start off by saying if this has been reposed I did a search but could not get a "how-to" on the process
So i recently got a new phone and i have my old HTC one m8, my best friend is stuck in the stone age with a very old smart phone so i said "lets make his day". Before i do though i have some questions he uses straight talk as a carrier and since the VZW htc one m8's are primary CDMA but also have a SIM card and can run off of GSM towers (yes they can only use 3g). Is it possible to run this phone off of straight talks network if so where would i start?
I guess my main questions are:
Do i need to flash a AT&T rom?
even though its a vzw phone do i need to flash new radios?
do i need to alter my CID?
The phone is S-offed and rooted!
My bad if this is a poorly constructed thread, just needed to ask!
It is possible to run through straight-talk (i did a lot of dev work on st earliest androids) you need to have unlocked devices and get the byop SIM card for att. Not sure what size SIM these phones take.
Also... St has no network they just lease tower usage.
Not sure about the Rom though... Never done a Verizon to att switch.
Last edit... Your data cap is far from unlimited and they're not cool with tethering. They claim unlimited but at 2gb I believe they start throttling bad and are known to cut data and service for habitual offenders *I've read but not seen*(iirc)
I've been off st/net10 for a long time so their practices could have changed. I would advise you not to go st but that's just my opinion.

You can get the straight talk verizon sim kit and pop it in your verizon m8 and your up and running, it will use verizon towers everything the same just you will have a 5mb cap on your data speed but you will get verizon LTE data and with st verizon you will get 3 full gb's of LTE data for $45 a month unl talk & text.
If you try to use at&t you will not get LTE data only hspa which hspa can go from I believe 4mb's to 12 mb's download speed. Your better off getting the st verizon sim kit and run verizon through st.

He mentioned that yes but I also mentioned that he would not get at&t LTE data on his verizon m8 that he would most likely only get hspa data speeds using at&t. People have worked hard getting a verizon m8 to get LTE data on tmobile some with success but most say they have to keep toggling air plane mode to keep the tmobile LTE data working, and there are very little far fewer success stories of people even getting that far with at&t LTE data on a verizon m8.
Basically the best thing is either run the straight talk verizon LTE sim card in the verizon m8 or sell off the verizon m8 and get an at&t one or a tmobile one and even then you can convert it to a dev edition and get updates faster directly from htc.
No one has figured out a way to convert a verizon m8 to a dev edition even though the verizon m8 is a world phone with cdma and gsm both, for some reason you cant because of the cdma side.

I"am running my verizon m8 on straight talk verizon service and mine works great. Does your verizon m8's imei show clean for activation with verizon ? Because if your imei is blacklisted with verizon it wont work or may for a while until their system picks it up and locks out your sim card because of it.
Its really just as simple as popping the st verizon sim in and run with it, unless your not fully activated with straight talk ? If you ported your number in it can take a day or so even and if the port has issues it may not finish until you call straight talk about it.
Any questions just ask as I have experience with straight talk and my m8 works great on it.
The whole 1-7 days on a port is a claim by them they generally stick to. Though 95% of carriers do it in 24-48hrs tops.. twice with net10 I had to finally just get a new number to get service (which included buying another unlimited card). I'm not against st/net10/AmericanMovil I just have had too many experiences like the above trying to work with their customer service.

well the full story is i got a nexus 6 still had my htc one m8 thought i would give it to my friend, i popped the verizon sim card in and tried to register it but on straight talks website it informs me that it is not a compatible device, so before my friend proceeds in adding minutes to this new sim card he wants to make sure it will work.

Oh they tried that crap with me and I didnt take no for an answer I got through to a supervisor and I explained either they restore my 30 days of unlimited service or I file a charge back with my credit card company and they changed their tune and credited my account.
They get away with doing that too many times you can also tell them you will file a complaint with the better business bureau, or even talk about turning them in for internet fraud because it is a pure case of fraud when they wont give you the service that you paid for pure and simple.
I have ported numbers to straight talk 4 or 5 times over the years and it usually took mine less than a day to go through. Many times the problem can be the wrong account number as most people think their phone number is their account number when porting to another carrier and 98% of the time its not your account number you always have to call your cell provider and ask for your account number they like it that way because when you ask for your account number they know why your asking for it and they can try to talk you out of switching to another carrier.

Did you put the imei number in on the straight talk web site ? Because their web site will tell you if its ready for activation or if its elgible for activation. You can also check your imei on one of the free imei checker web sites and it will show the status of your imei number as far as being ready for activation.

Yeah... I spent 9 days and probably 30 phone calls talking to everyone I could get to including supervisors before I finally gave up out of frustration and just bought a new card (2 different occasions 9 days total). What I've found is their biggest issue is with Sprint numbers. At&t and tmobile seem to port easier. I've never worked with Verizon through st/net10.

I did and my IMEI is clean and not blacklsited, when i go to straight talks website it says "Unfortunately, your phone is not eligible for the Bring Your Own Phone program. The good news is that Straight Talk has a large selection of phones from leading manufacturers. Find a phone in-store or online that best fits your needs." the steps i went though is. 1: clicked check your phones compatibility 2: picked the red other carrier option 3: when a pop up says " is your phone a unlocked GSM phone" i picked no, and thus got this message.
Thanks everyone for helping me out again =D

You can also activate your sim in another verizon phone then put it in the m8 or just use another clean verizon imei to order the service with. Actually straight talk is easy to port to, now porting out of them now that is a real pain and takes longer. Straight talk is not a lot of fun to deal with but if you get it set up your free and clear and shouldnt have any further issues.

Do you have a friend that has a verizon phone that takes a nano sim ? If so just use their imei number to order the sim kit from straight talk it wont matter because that is just a verification to make sure your phone will work but I assure you the verizon m8 will work with the straight talk verizon sim cards.
Another thing you could do is just buy the st verizon sim card kit off ebay or amazon then just open the account on the st web site and activate your sim card number adding it to your new st account.
I appreciate the response but I wasnt the one having issues I was simply explaining my experience and putting the SIM in a different device won't help port a number. St May have gotten better but ime over two years of their android service it's best to just change your number. Outside of porting I've never had issues with them.
