Icon refresh after closing app - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have a fairly new nexus 5 from an RMA so is this a issue with new handset or I have read it's due to new Google now launcher.
Every time I close game app or social media app my screen icons disappear and the come back after a second or so.
I didn't have this on my original at any point.
Thanks

I'm running completely stock and I do occasionally get oddities when returning to the launcher. Mostly, this results in the wallpaper turning black for a split second before returning. It's not the end of the world but it doesn't look very slick next to iOS 6... I've not found a cure for it sadly.

It's a memory issue. When you are running heavy apps suchs as games etc the launcher will drop out of memory to make place for the game and will have to redraw itself when you go back to it. I have not personally had this issue with the stock launcher as far as I know but on the other hand I do not play games either except for emulators. Perhaps it's some kind of Google Launcher issue. It should stay in memory though and not get killed unless you have very little free RAM available.

Don't worry it is only because of your heavy graphics apps, generally social media apps or games apps takes lots of memory to store.

Chrome browser heats up phone

I've been monitoring my temp on my nexus 5 and notice that chrome browser would heat up about 20 degrees more comparing to Firefox, dolphin and opera. I almost get about the same type of heat while playing a game.
I've tried it with stock, Franco, faux and elementalx kernel. And got similar results.
It does run smooth but I miss my aosp browser with text reflow...

I noticed this too. I see that the CPU runs on max speed when chrome is open.
Yeah Chrome destroys the battery as well. Idk what's up with it. I hope there's a update here soon.

Google needs to restore the old aosp webkit code in 4.4. The new chromium webview is so inefficient. Ditch chrome for android and update the old aosp webview to the latest version of webkit and v8.

Really? Chrome pegs the CPU to max value? If true that is pretty ****ty of Google. It sounds like something an OEM would do to "fix" their weakest point, which for Google is seriously Chrome's lagginess. Sounds like one of those "features" that would get turned off in an update after all of the reviews are in.
Gonna have to test this out.
Good thanks guys, I figured I'll get slam for posting this. But at least now I know I'm not alone. It really feels like with the nexus 5 they are really trying to push Google stuff down our throat.
Just like the YouTube and Google plus integration.

I can confirm that Chrome does not peg the CPU to max value. It certainly seems like it ramps up the CPU higher than is necessary, but its not "cheating" like Samsung does for benchmarks in any way.
The Nexus 5, for me, heats up no matter what I do. 5 minutes of youtube produces noticeable heat, as does facebook and many other apps. Personally, I would suggest you set the max CPU freq lower and see what happens. Personally, I do not mind the heat that much, as it does not seem to detrimentally affect the battery life.
I've been using Firefox and find the phone gets warm and drains the battery fairly quickly. I have it set up to sync, are you using sync options on your chrome?

Somewhat unrelated, but do you have any issues with images displaying on some sites? I see nothing on bing images and ebay mobile, for example.

Why wouldn't they; those are their products? Lol. Do you expect them to release a phone and urge you to use other people's apps, etc.? Just think about it for a minute...

I did think about it for a minute. Nexus 5 without stock Android browser and YouTube integrated with Google plus is kinda like pushing us to use the service they want us to use. Which Google normally don't do. What I like about android was the freedom. I aware this will change with custom roms but its the direction it is going.
And I didn't mention other people app? Not sure if you realized stock android browser and YouTube is own by Google.

Checked Bing images and it's working fine on FF. I should also note that I have an addon to use desktop versions of sites checked by default.

Do you mind checking in mobile version? No images show for me.
On my phone chrome pushes CPU to max value until thermal throttle kicks in.

Chrome is a battery hog, it's very heavy on the system. Dolphin with Jetpack for the win!

Shift worker app

Does anyone know what shift worker app is the best on the android market? I rely on these apps to plan my months and the one I used to use on my iPhone doesn't appear to be available. Any help would be really appreciated!!

I just bit the bullet and entered all my shifts into Google Calendar. My shift pattern repeats after 10 weeks, so although it took me a little while to get those first ten entered, the "repeat every xx...." function in Calendar means I never have to mess around with it again.
Also, having it in my calendar means that Google Now can give me reminders when to leave for work early if, for instance, the traffic is bad that day.
Plus, if I ever move away from Android (unlikely) then my Calendar can come with me, no issues - rather than facing the same problem which you have now.
To actually display my calendar I like Calendar Pad's widget. Also I have Calendar Status Pro in my notification shade, which is handy because I have a constant reminder of calendar appointments every time I pull down the shade.
I'm always interested in trying out new solutions if they can provide better functionality though, so I'd be interested to hear what other people use too
That's an idea I had already contemplated but my shifts change every 5 weeks. I used an app on the iPhone called 'Shift worker' made by a company called production shed. I've emailed them to see if they have the same app available for android but I highly doubt it! Shame a dev couldn't come up with something that we could really make great use of! All the apps I've saw just look mega complicated. Might need to resort to Google calendar though and integrate it with Google now.

I have used Flexr for about a year. :good:

Arbeitskalender is also a good app. You can find it in PlayStore. I am sorry, I don't have the link right now.

I use fire shifts calendar. Its got quite a few different shift rotations that work for just about any fire/ems shift rotation I've seen. Plus its free.

[Q] Shield Tablet Home Screen How do you Remove Panels?

So i have the Shield Tablet and i also have a Nexus 5. I noticed the Shield Home Screen has 5 panels, regardless of if they are empty or not. On the Nexus 5 empty panels are automatically removed when they have no icons/widgets. This doesnt seem to happen on the Shield Tablet however. I have the main home screen full, and 1 screen to the left and 1 screen to the right with some content but not full (3 panels). I still have the 4th and fifth panels even though they are empty. Id really like to remove these as they are not in use.
Has any one figured out how to remove the panels?
I should mention i am NOT interested in using another launcher. Thanks

There isn't any way to do this using the stock Android launcher. The Nexus devices use the Google Now Launcher
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.launcher
EDIT: I just tried out the Google Now launcher on the Shield Tablet and it works well.
Does using the now launcher break any of the nvidia stuff?
Also how'd you install it?
Thanks

Sorry part of that was dumb on my part. Guessing you installed from play store. Does it remove stylus integration or controller integration?
Thanks

It does not break any of the NVidia stuff. They were just using the stock launcher without anything modified to begin with. The stylus stuff all still works (I don't have a controller to test but it should still work as well). I first tried it out with an APK from AndroidPolice but it was also just updated today by Google to work with any device running 4.1+ and can be installed via the Play Store. If it's a staged rollout you may just not be able to see the install button yet.
Yea I tried finding it yesterday and it wasn't in the store. If you pull down the settings from the top right so you still see the square for the stylus and controller in with other settings (WiFi, Bluetooth, etc)?
I'll install it when I get home to check it out. Thanks

Yup. All of the options are still there. The only difference to the top and bottom bar is that you get the gradient/transparent background.
Sweet got it. Seems to be working well

Google play music buttons

The music buttons started looking weird like this since I flashed from slimkat to purity
Sent from my Nexus 5
ok, so? what's weird about it?
Play Music updated to material design.
Before, the bottom buttons looked like this rather than have all the buttons cluttered at the bottom. Any way to fix that?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
That looks weird. Mine doesn't look like that. Uninstall it and download Music app through play store. Its has been updated.
Already did that, it stayed the same

Exploit in XDA Android app.

Hi.
There seems to be a problem with the XDA app. Just before Christmas I was using the app and I was automatically taken to a web page and it started to download a betting app without my approval. Today I had another issue where it automatically took me tp a webpage and opened up lots of android system pages, there were so many I could not swipe them all away so I had to reset my device.
I am using a Nexus 10 with stock Lillipop unrooted.
I have a hunch its the ads but not 100%. Is anyone else experiencing problems?
Same here, anytime I open XDA, it opens up LYFT or UBER in the Play Store. Guess XDA wants to flood us with advertising. Welcome to the new world of advertisement.
Nexus 6 (lollipop)
Thanks Mike. At least it's not only me. Maybe it's time to root lollipop and install adaway.
