Chrome browser heats up phone - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been monitoring my temp on my nexus 5 and notice that chrome browser would heat up about 20 degrees more comparing to Firefox, dolphin and opera. I almost get about the same type of heat while playing a game.
I've tried it with stock, Franco, faux and elementalx kernel. And got similar results.
It does run smooth but I miss my aosp browser with text reflow...

I noticed this too. I see that the CPU runs on max speed when chrome is open.

Yeah Chrome destroys the battery as well. Idk what's up with it. I hope there's a update here soon.

Google needs to restore the old aosp webkit code in 4.4. The new chromium webview is so inefficient. Ditch chrome for android and update the old aosp webview to the latest version of webkit and v8.

Really? Chrome pegs the CPU to max value? If true that is pretty ****ty of Google. It sounds like something an OEM would do to "fix" their weakest point, which for Google is seriously Chrome's lagginess. Sounds like one of those "features" that would get turned off in an update after all of the reviews are in.
Gonna have to test this out.

Good thanks guys, I figured I'll get slam for posting this. But at least now I know I'm not alone. It really feels like with the nexus 5 they are really trying to push Google stuff down our throat.
Just like the YouTube and Google plus integration.

I can confirm that Chrome does not peg the CPU to max value. It certainly seems like it ramps up the CPU higher than is necessary, but its not "cheating" like Samsung does for benchmarks in any way.

The Nexus 5, for me, heats up no matter what I do. 5 minutes of youtube produces noticeable heat, as does facebook and many other apps. Personally, I would suggest you set the max CPU freq lower and see what happens. Personally, I do not mind the heat that much, as it does not seem to detrimentally affect the battery life.

I've been using Firefox and find the phone gets warm and drains the battery fairly quickly. I have it set up to sync, are you using sync options on your chrome?

Somewhat unrelated, but do you have any issues with images displaying on some sites? I see nothing on bing images and ebay mobile, for example.

I did think about it for a minute. Nexus 5 without stock Android browser and YouTube integrated with Google plus is kinda like pushing us to use the service they want us to use. Which Google normally don't do. What I like about android was the freedom. I aware this will change with custom roms but its the direction it is going.
And I didn't mention other people app? Not sure if you realized stock android browser and YouTube is own by Google.

Checked Bing images and it's working fine on FF. I should also note that I have an addon to use desktop versions of sites checked by default.

Do you mind checking in mobile version? No images show for me.

On my phone chrome pushes CPU to max value until thermal throttle kicks in.

Chrome is a battery hog, it's very heavy on the system. Dolphin with Jetpack for the win!

Best app for AIM?

I find the official AIM app to be a huge battery drain!
Is Meebo or anything else better with battery consumption?
Trillian uses push notifications.
Anything free or is trillian worth it??
I beta tested Trillian on Android and loved it. Been a PC user of Trillian for about a decade as well.
eBuddy, Trillian, BeeJiveIM, Meebo
i use to use beejive on blackberry and loved it. anyone tried on android? its $5 to get it. IMO
I just want to reiterate that Trillian has push! hehe
Bought Trillian finally getting rid of my beta version. Works awesome.
I find trillian to be really buggy. Some times my contacts do not show up until an app restart id done, connectivity issues and a few minor things.
My favorite IM to use is meebo.

I use BeeJive both on iPhone and here and I love it. Very nice, looks great and works well.
I always find Trillian to have disconnected itself or shut down after a while. Been using eBuddy and like it. It's easy on the battery and free.

I use Trillian and like it, but I've never tried the alternatives, so I can't fairly say I think it's the best. Good enough that I haven't had cause to switch, anyway. Black theme, so that's a bit of a battery saver on a SAMOLED device. And since it suspends in the background and relies on C2DM push notifications, it uses close to zero battery when it's not the active application. (Note that you have to check battery saving mode in the settings for this to work, though.)

Kind of curious about why the phone is so slow when downloading anything

Hey brothas I'm kind of still learning about the capabilities of our smartphones as far as performance goes but I am really curious as to why whenever your downloading an app or anything
The phone runs so crappy and becomes very unresponsive and slow...I've never seen this happen on my mytouch 4g or even my g1...but whatever its downloading, it downloads it super fast but I just don't understand this phone has a dual core processor you would think it would be able to download anything and still run smooth...I dunno guys I am just curious if anyone knows why or even has a fix...its like this for me on all roms and kernels..my thought is when your downloading something the CPU focuses all its power on that download therefore everything else is slow..but I dunno like I said I am kind of a noob and always looking to learn...appreciate some input..thanks brothas

I was actually wondering about this myself. I get that slowdown too, and especially as it's installing the app or whatever it is I've downloaded.
Doesn't bother me TOO much, I just kind of chill out, while it installs... But a curiosity none-the-less.
Haven't noticed any slowdown while dl'ing. Just dl'ed a 3meg kernel in like 5 seconds.

I can confirm this. I think the main issue is, is that we are using software that was never intended for a dual core processor so the end result is random reboots, lag when downloading apps, etc. Even the Sensation which has a dual core processor has its share of software glitches/issues. Let's hope that when Ice Cream Sandwich (Google's next update with dual core processor support) comes out that we'll either automatically get the update from LG/T-Mobile or LG/Nvidia will release the necessary drivers and/or files to the XDA community.

Sorry for the misunderstanding the phone is fine when downloading, but whenever its doing an install for whatever reason it gets unresponsive or extremely laggy for a short second. Try downloading something from the market and then when it starts to install browse the web and see what it does. This is definitely not a major or a minor issue for me since it does this for only a quick second.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
Ok, so if you go to market and then go to myapps...and there's like 12 things that need to be updated...and you start clicking one by one, update, ok, update, ok, etc...you never feel any hiccup of lag when it's at the install phase of any of those?
I feel this all of the time. Especially when I use CM's market apps installer that defaults after installing a new nightly...when I have almost all of them checkmarked, then it takes me to the market page for each one of them individually. And it has nothing at all to do with internet connection or speed, because it's the same whether I'm using my 6MBps 4g, or my 36MBps wifi at home. Sometimes, the hiccup will even make me click the wrong button by accident.
my pc,6 core amd, 6 gigs ram, sometimes becomes sluggish while installing graphic card drivers etc. i wouldn't put too much thought into it. it usually takes about 5 seconds to install an app.

Yeah, I agree this isn't much of a big deal at least to me. I can live with it. I was just agreeing with the OP since I also noticed the short bit of lag.

Its not the download that causes the phone to be slow. When you're installing an app, the processor is being used and it will slow down the phone, especially when you're updating/installing multiple apps. My g1, droid, captivate, and g2x have done this. My ipod touch did it too.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I find that this only happens when installing an app from the google market. When installing apk's from any other source it seems to be fine.
Also as a note, after updating to the new google app i have noticed that it doesnt slow down anymore. It might be me, but i think its just the old market app.
I got this slow down on every Android phone I've owned except my Sensation. Maybe Gingerbread fixed it?

Your welcome and check out the link below. Even Qualcomm, the company who has designed processor chips for phones such as the myTouch 4g, HTC Sensation, Evo 3d etc. also agrees with my statement about the software not being supported for dual core processors. That's why some of you may have noticed that your previous 1ghz single core phone was either just as fast as these dual core phones or even faster in day to day use. For instance my myTouch 4g (when rooted with Faux Aosp build clocked at stock 1ghz) and Stock Nexus felt just as fast as the G2x when opening and closing apps and even scrolling through the browser (the myTouch 4g scrolled through the browser just as smooth as the G2x, but the Nexus S did not).

Haxsync and KitKat

Hey guys, has anybody tried had sync? I always used it on my nexus devices, however, the last update for it is on October 6th, way before KitKat release date. I've read through some of the reviews and some have mentioned of it preventing phone from going to deep sleep and causing wake locks. That was on a galaxy phones though, no mention of issues on nexus 5. I have just got the nexus, don't really want to install something that's not fully compatible yet.

Why not try it for your self? If it causes problems just uninstall it. Plan and simple. Not like it can brick your phone because an app isn't 100% compatible.

I did when I got my nexus. My battery died faster than expected. I looked through logs, and noticed that yahoo weather was draining a lot of battery on the background, ended up uninstalling that and haxsync because I figured that it could have been both as android usage was also high. Today, everything was fine. I will try to reinstall it.
I do seem to get some contact pics synced, I'm guessing by default Facebook app still doesn't sync contacts on stock, right? Pictures might be coming from Google +?

Odd, that link works for me. Must be because I've had it installed for years...

Mobilesyrup does not load.

For the life of me cannot figure out why I can't load mobilesyrup webpage on my nexus 5 while using the chrome browser.
Any links to the site or even articles pertaining to mobilesyrup simply leads to it stalling and never loading.
All other pages I've tested so far work. Googling the word mobile syrup will bring up the usual, list main site and news pertaining too the site but actually clicking on any links leads to it just stalling.
The strange part is if I choose incognito mode it works flawlessly. Decided to clear cookies. Etc... But nothing works.
This is a bit concerning as I'm starting to wonder if this is true for other pages I haven't yet visited.
Running everything stock. No root, nothing. 4.4.2
Anyone have any clue as to why this is?

Are you using that band width saving feature in chrome?

Yea, I just tested, out of curiousity. Loaded fine, and then turned on the bandwidth savings and it would not load the page completely. Switched off and loaded again.
To see if yours is on, you will need to go into Chrome's Settings and under Advanced, you'll see the Bandwidth Management then inside there, in Reduce Data Usage, just turn the setting off and you'll be good to go.
Yes bandwidth saving feature is on. I'm going to go test it out now. If that's the issue, I wonder why it only affects mobilesyrup.

Google Chrome not smooth

A few days ago I bought an Asus Zenfone 2 for my mum and I realised how smooth chrome is on that phone compared to the S6. Anyone else having this issue where chrome isn't really running at 60fps?
Especially when opening and closing tabs, my S6 just drops frames all the time. I'm on 5.0.2 if it matters.
probably something to do with the extremely poor ram management on the S6, as chrome is known to be a resource hog. Zenfone 2 on the other hand has 4GB of ram.
It's not the high end zenfone, it's the dual core version with only 2gb of ram
Sent from my SM-G920I using Tapatalk
Try to enable Developer options and raise to 1.5x or 2x each of the three animation settings.
The length of the animation doesn't help anything. I'll post a slow mo video later. The S6 just drops frames so often.

https://youtu.be/N7hhB2CYheI
As you can see, the S6 drops so many frames compared to an entry level phone.
Installing the latest 'Android system web view' made chrome smooth on my phone.
I did. Version 45+ for arm and arm64. Didn't help at all
Sent from my SM-G920I using Tapatalk
Ok, today I made a quick browsing session with Chrome, paying attention to smoothness, and can't really say to see something wrong.
I mean, I come from a OnePlus One that was very smooth (custom ROM and kernel) and my S6 is around 99% of that performance.
The heavy debloating I made might help, though.
I also have this lagg in chrome, but i must say its only on resource heavy pages (lots of pictures, adds, banners etc.).
I will reset my device in a few days. Went to the Samsung store and checked out their display units. Some seem to suffer from it while others don't. My phone is also pretty bloat free, only about 3 pages of apps.

If you have couple of web pages that need Javascript you can add them to exceptions in settings. But if you visit mainly those pages that necessarily need javascript then this solution is not good.
