Kernel gone wild - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What could possibly be causing the kernel to take up 44% of my battery and going crazy like that?!

[Q] battery overheating question

hey all, maybe its just my paranoid self, but i just want to be sure;
i was charging my phone, and at the same time, i was playing slice it. suddenly i realized that the back of the phone was getting really hot, and i checked the temperature. it was about 45c, and i was gettin freaked out, so i took the batttery and put in the fridge for like 10 seconds, before realizing that was a stupid mistake. after about 5 minutes, it cooled back down to 30.5c. i believe that perhaps the battery was around 45c for about a minute or so.
I was just wondering, do you think my battery life will suffer from my idiotic antics? Im a bit worried that itll have a significant impact, even if it was for a few minutes? Did i 'burn' out some of the lithium ion cells?
much help appreciated!
thanks alot!
Just curious, does only your battery get warm, or does the top half of the phone (above the battery) got hot too?
Phone only overheated when I had bluetooth and wifi running while charging

its just the back of the phone where the battery is located
Mine did the exact same thing last night with fruit ninja of all things. I also put my whole phone in the fridge for one minute and it dropped the battery temp from 45c to 38c. The battery condition also said "overheated" instead of "good" which it has said since then.

nice to know that im not the only one :]
Can anyone answer my question about if the short amount of overheating damaged my battery?

Mine got to 53c while doing absolutely nothing, any idea what causes this?

I don't think anyone really knows and begging for an answer is a quick way to get flamed.
I know that if you were to rapidly cool metal or another material in that same manner, it would crack. I don't know if that same issue would apply to batteries. I definitely wouldn't put anything overheated directly into a frozen environment like that.

+1 not a great idea, just take battery out and let it sit

Mine had the same problem. Whenever i put it on charge it would heat up within minutes and then upon unplugging it would cool down. I read somewhere in the forum to discharge completely and then recharge to full. I did that and its been 1 week since that and no problems with overheating and battery life is also improved. My battery`s health is still GOOD i checked using * # * # 4 6 3 6 # * # *
Hope this helps.
I undervolted the cpu. Overheating almoat stopped. I swapped battery and has been better since. Usually running two quadrants i would start feeling it get hotter and hotter. On new battery i run four an don't notice any major change.
G2x with CM7 and trinity kernel
out of the blue overheating
My phone was awesome...but now it overheats....??
I am going to try and undervolt and see if that helps my problems but my phone just goes crazy hot when it's asleep and idk what to do, even w/ a new warranty phone, and i could tell it's new cause it still had the green tap by the buttons and stuff...the old one got crazy hot, but only after cm7 build33....and this was also after i changed the recovery to 3101 ext4 supported one....can a recovery affect your roms (overheat it) i would't think so, it only loads on command idk how it would....hmmmmm my vibrant would be a dead cold 28-29c when on idle/sleep but w/ this phone it just gets hot and is about 37-43 when doing nothing.....i'm going to try the undervolt thing w/ cm7 latest build and faux123's kernel 0.1.1 and try to undervolt it, i'll search thru that thread for good undervolting starting points...and play w/ that......idk i'm just confused why it is just now happening and not before, i had it on launch day and no problems till last week....i'm lost..

Severe overheating?

Hey guys,
This last week has been absolutely brutal in the northeast us. We've had high 90s pretty much everyday. [Especially in the car] my g2x has been suffering from "random reboots" running fauxs 1.2.8 and kernel 0.3.2. It was a new phenomenon, I thought it was the DS kernel I had rather than CM7, but all that did was affect battery life.
I finally was using my device when it decided to "turn off" and the screen just kept turning off ( less and less time being on, fractions of seconds.) Then it just stays off and the battery temp reads 100+° at turn offs.
It requires a battery pull to turn back on ( and I guess turn off) but the heat doesn't seem to come from the battery, but behind the camera, im thinking processor.
Could it be from the OC/UV kernel. I had on? It's on standard now.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
OC'ing can easily overheat/fry the processor (hence why there's always large warnings around it), especially if the kernel hits a race condition or similar.
The phones are passively cooled. and the radios in the phone heat up the phone when used heavily. I have not had anyphone that didnt get extrememly hot while it is using the radio when its in above 80 degrees ambient temperature and overclocking would just add to this. luckily most have a feature ot turn off the phone at a certain temp to protect the hardware. But I dont think this is a specific g2x problme my old droid does the same thing.
I took mine to a pool in Vegas. It was probably about 90 degrees. I had it under my lounge chair shaded listening to music. It had a heat stroke after about an hour.
I understand why/how overheating can be caused by oc but honestly if its not running at stock (or benchmarking) I have it set to 800mhz by default- its still fast as hell. It hasn't overheated in the last few days, but the problem was that even if I don't use it, it'll overheat.
I use juice defender to keep my radio off when the screens off, so I can't even lay blame to that.
I haven't really dove into undervolting, but in theory wouldn't lower voltage equate to less residual heating?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
mine does this running stock. Mostly when I have the charger plugged in and am still doing something. It will be taking a charge but the batery level will still slowly fall, once it gets below a certain point it gets really hot behind the camera and the screen starts locking and unlocking. faster and faster until you finally have to pull the battery and let it cool down a while.
YES!!!! I have 2 G2x that do this, and a guy at work has one. All stock phones, and can be doing NOTHING - gets hot near the camera lens, and LOCKS!!!! Have to pull the battery. I pull the battery for 1 second, re-install, and G2x works fine. I know of 3 G2x, and all do this. I can't believe I don't see more of this on this forum. T-Mobile has a "discussion number" on this: 265747. LG claims ignorance. I'd love to know how to "fix" this. I'd also like to know if GB fixes this.
The occasional re-boots are live-able - this lock up is NOT.

I can verify this is an issue with my phone as well! It was happening all the damn time in both stock Froyo and EaglesBlood Froyo, but as soon as I went to CyanogenMod 7 RC1, I haven't had it happen once.
And to those of you who haven't had this happen, it's like the Sleep of Death + your phone gets REALLY hot by the camera lens and it keeps draining the battery and putting out TONS of heat until you do a battery pull. It brought my battery from 100% to 25% in like 30 minutes of doing this.
But CM7 seemed to solve the issue. No more SOD+heat!
This problem has been driving me absolutely insane. My wife and I both got g2x's at the dame time (new from tmobile), and hers rarely does this, while mine does it continually. I was wondering if it was related to the case we have - but we both have the same case - the speck one sold at tmobile.
My wife and I both have the little rubber buggy baby bumper condom case thing that does cover the back - that would reduce heat dissipation. I often carry mine in a belt case that came with the phone from CostCo - she almost never uses that case.

how is your battery life on CM10 and or jellybean TW?

what kind of battery life are you all seeing now on Jellybean TW and or CM10? I am interested in your screen on times. and if you are on 4g or not and what rom?
thanks so much
been squeezin 30+ hrs with 4-5 hrs of on screen time out of AOKP M1
been off stock so long cant evern remember what i used to pull on there
Im on J1 touchwiz and currently at 21hrs w/ 2hrs screen on, 48% battery left.
You guys get crazy battery life, I can't even get that on the 4400Mah Anker battery

How the hell you doing that? that's what I'm on and I get maybe 24+ with 2 3/4 - 3 hours of screen. What kernel are you using?

That's crazy... almost unbelievable lol. What ROM? Kernel?
I do run a governor on mine at a max of 1242(or whatever the 1200 one is) but like I said above I get maybe 2 days on medium usage. With 4G constantly. And when I was running leankernel I put the voltages down considerably, tho the stock AOSP seemed to get better life or at least the same without voltages touched.

dpends on usage and teh day for me. and whether im at work or not.
AOKP M1
KT747
min 144
max 1296
never messed with voltages. i only installed kt kernel to make my minimum lower than 384
i have some battery screenshots recently of
21hr on battery
2hr30min screen on time
still had 50% left
an older CM10 rom got 6hr on battery time, 4hr on screen time with 50% left. I think that was on an AOKP unofficail from rootz
Remember! Black themes help ALOT! Anywhere that is black, the screen isn't using pixels (some **** like that) for example. Get an allll black wallpaper. (Don't just take a pick of something black) turn screen off. Cover top and bottom of phone. Press button to turn on. You can't even tell if its on.

Currently have 7% left and have 31ish hours with 6+ hours screen on time. Pics coming soon.

Battery life problems.

Hello, I'm currently running cm 9, however the battery life is just awful
When the phone is on sleep it loses like 1 percent every 5-10 minutes
I am using an extended battery as well, please tell me what to do I was on GB before and the battery was outstanding, I could go on one charge the whole day with heavy usage, now i dont think I can make it through the day with light usage on this
thank you
EDIT: This could be a sleep problem, because when the device is on, the battery is normal
If you flashed the Feb 27 cm9 you should flash proton kernel so you can watch videos. Battery life isn't as good as gb no matter what you do. Also give it some time to settle in. It takes more than a couple hours.
alright thank you... I just flashed the newest version of cm9 a few hours ago, I was flashing a bunch of roms and this one seemed the best... do you know how to force a device into deep sleep cause that seems to be the problem i believe
OK I was just on 20 percent, then i rebooted my phone, and now im on 2 percent... im seriously considering going back to gb
Sounds more like a battery thing? With CM9.? + Proton I'm getting at least a day* with light use. Maybe a bad app or combo of apps? What does BBS say is eating the charge?
* - I say at least a day because I can't not use it for that long.

just the screen and the android system... very interesting thing though is happening
I'm running a bunch of quadrants to get the battery down to 0, and the battery is all the way down to 1%, however it's been on 1% for like 6 quadrant tests... maybe its just a problem with the indicator, however another indicator also says it's at 1%... very interesting
If you are on CM9, I suggest you flash Hefe or Proton.
I use Hefe because according to the posts being made it puts your phone into deep sleep, which means longer battery life.

Definitely a battery problem. This happens to me on one of my batteries but not on another. Time to buy a new one. I haven't tested it fully but it does appear to be just a display issue. Sometimes the bad battery will make the phone display 1% but it will still act as if it had way more than 1% charge left. I haven't done any testing on that regard but that's what it appears to do.

I don't believe it to be a battery problem, because I've been on GB with absolutely no problems and exceptional battery... I just upgraded to ics not long ago, and the battery life instantly screwed up
Have you set the cpu governor to anything silly like performance?
Have you let it charge up fully at least once?
Search xda for "better battery stats" app, use it to see if you're getting deep sleep.
Flash hefe over release 8 and youll have a little better battery. Proton doesnt deep sleep
Sent from my SGH-T959V using Tapatalk 2
Proton DOES deep sleep. That was one of its major features.
Certain scheduler/governor combinations work better on different kernels, though. If the specific one you like most sleeps better on Hefe, great. If the one you like does best on Proton, great. Just be aware that most issues are either physical or user-inflicted...
In this case, your battery is almost certainly dying. The variance in power over a reboot is a definite tell that your battery is probably swollen. If you can spin it on a table, the cells are starting to die. This does not mean you can't keep using it, but it does mean that your battery life will be irregular. It also means that you'll have significantly "higher" battery levels if you reboot the phone with external power connected, but the battery will discharge very quickly if it hasn't actually reached whatever level it believes it should be at.

One plus one terrible battery life

Hello all. I have had my one plus one for nearly one year and since the start it has been really bad with battery life. I can get around 4 to 5 hours of idle time with my brightness at the lowest capability and force quitting every app after using it and I can get maybe an extra 4 hours with battery saver. Something is clearly wrong and I would like to fix it since some of my other One Plus buddies have around 21-30 hours of battery life right out of the box.
My phone is rooted and I have changed the rom 4 times but this battery life problem has been a problem since I opened the phone and started using it. I am currently running the newest Cyanogen 13 snapshot. Could this be a defect? the phone occassionally lags a lot and the only fix is force restarting. Seriously need help thank you.
You might want to get it checked, the battery might be faulty. Try using an AOSP based build and see if the issue persists. If it does, then your battery might need to be replaced.
