hey all, maybe its just my paranoid self, but i just want to be sure;
i was charging my phone, and at the same time, i was playing slice it. suddenly i realized that the back of the phone was getting really hot, and i checked the temperature. it was about 45c, and i was gettin freaked out, so i took the batttery and put in the fridge for like 10 seconds, before realizing that was a stupid mistake. after about 5 minutes, it cooled back down to 30.5c. i believe that perhaps the battery was around 45c for about a minute or so.
I was just wondering, do you think my battery life will suffer from my idiotic antics? Im a bit worried that itll have a significant impact, even if it was for a few minutes? Did i 'burn' out some of the lithium ion cells?
much help appreciated!
thanks alot!
Just curious, does only your battery get warm, or does the top half of the phone (above the battery) got hot too?

its just the back of the phone where the battery is located
Mine did the exact same thing last night with fruit ninja of all things. I also put my whole phone in the fridge for one minute and it dropped the battery temp from 45c to 38c. The battery condition also said "overheated" instead of "good" which it has said since then.

I don't think anyone really knows and begging for an answer is a quick way to get flamed.
I know that if you were to rapidly cool metal or another material in that same manner, it would crack. I don't know if that same issue would apply to batteries. I definitely wouldn't put anything overheated directly into a frozen environment like that.

Mine had the same problem. Whenever i put it on charge it would heat up within minutes and then upon unplugging it would cool down. I read somewhere in the forum to discharge completely and then recharge to full. I did that and its been 1 week since that and no problems with overheating and battery life is also improved. My battery`s health is still GOOD i checked using * # * # 4 6 3 6 # * # *
Hope this helps.
I undervolted the cpu. Overheating almoat stopped. I swapped battery and has been better since. Usually running two quadrants i would start feeling it get hotter and hotter. On new battery i run four an don't notice any major change.
G2x with CM7 and trinity kernel
out of the blue overheating
My phone was awesome...but now it overheats....??
I am going to try and undervolt and see if that helps my problems but my phone just goes crazy hot when it's asleep and idk what to do, even w/ a new warranty phone, and i could tell it's new cause it still had the green tap by the buttons and stuff...the old one got crazy hot, but only after cm7 build33....and this was also after i changed the recovery to 3101 ext4 supported one....can a recovery affect your roms (overheat it) i would't think so, it only loads on command idk how it would....hmmmmm my vibrant would be a dead cold 28-29c when on idle/sleep but w/ this phone it just gets hot and is about 37-43 when doing nothing.....i'm going to try the undervolt thing w/ cm7 latest build and faux123's kernel 0.1.1 and try to undervolt it, i'll search thru that thread for good undervolting starting points...and play w/ that......idk i'm just confused why it is just now happening and not before, i had it on launch day and no problems till last week....i'm lost..

I got a replacement battery from T-Mobile about a week ago for the G2X and since I've been using it I have had ZERO sleep of deaths or charging related issues. The phone runs much much cooler as well.
I remember with my old battery a few times when I had the sleep of death and had to pull the battery the battery was rather warm and there was an odor like it was overheating. Also there were times when the phone just felt hot while charging or in use. This no longer also happens.
I still get reboots but I believe strongly that to be a software issue since my reboots used to be every 18-20 hours and now after some app changes the phone usually lasts 30-40 hours before it reboots.
So if you are having sleep of death issues or charging related problems, get your battery swapped out!
My old battery had a 3/28/11 date and my new one has a 4/28/11 date so anything after 4/28/11 should be safe.
good to hear.. my new battery should be here today.
got my replacement yesterday. 14 hours uptime but I'm not holding my breath for any difference. I only got sod like 3 times the entire time I've had the phone.
I'm getting my replacement battery Monday so lets hope that's the issue.
I really think it's a temperature problem with the battery. When I lay the phone battery down, and charge it, sleep of death. When I have the protective case on and charge it, SoD. When I have the phone sitting on it's side, kind of standing up while charging, no SoD. Also, when driving and it's in sunlight with the case on, I get the SoD. Without the case, no SoD.
I can only gather that the battery is bad and gets too hot, forcing a shutdown.
49 hours 15 minutes uptime and not a single SOD or reboot. Phone runs noticeably cooler while charging also. SOD may be due to the battery afterall.
old battery dated 4/16, new one 4/23 so I dont think date has anything to do with it.
Please answer me....
I have the same problem and i ask you that battery replace solve the problem indeed...

Seriously this overheating problem is getting pretty annoying. Phone overheats when I'm watching a movie, playing a game and charging. Phone actually went into safe mode a couple of times because of the overheating.
This has never happened to Mr and I watched 2 movies on the way to Paris today on auto brightness. Probably a hardware issue.

Do a factory reset, or check and see if you have a runaway app that is constantly making the processor run on Max. I had the same problem the first week and couldnt sstand it. Turns out widgetsoid and widgetlocker (or so I've heard) have this problem. Do a nandroid backup and factory reset. Worked well for me. Just for clarification my battery wasn't the issue, the phone would get hot right around the sim area underneath the camera. Hope this helps

Mine gets super hot only when I am using my gps with the screen on for over 30 minutes. And when I say super hot, I mean SUPER HOT! Like to a point where if I had it in my pocket it would irritate my skin. Do I hear a lawsuit? lol. j/k.
i have not experienced any of the above.
but today around 8ish am i will be taking off in a trip and the infuse will be my main GPS just for the fun of it.
i will check out these so called overheating issues.
Are you using a case?

Yes it gets hot the 1st week, when you buy a new phone you have to charge it for 12-15hrs even it indicate it is full and not charging.

No I am not using a case. And I'm not talking about only when I charge the phone. Its when I play a game for a few minutes or watch a movie for 10-20 minutes. And its the top portion of the phone. Its not coming from the battery.

I haven't seen any heat issues on this phone.
Trust me when I tell you that my Infuse has never noticeably changed temperature. I can say this with confidence because I switched from a Nexus One. The N1 has an aluminum body and any time you do absolutely anything with the charger plugged in or with the GPS on, the phone gets hot enough to make your hand feel sweaty. So this phone is a world of difference from that.
If your phone is over heating to the point of safe mode, you NEED to return it, it's a problem with the processor and it will only get worse....the heat comes directly from underneath the camera and led and has nothing to do with the battery

Your phone must be defective. I can play hours of hd games and never have any overheating issues. The back cover is cold for most of the time and even when charging and playing games it is barely warm.
So i went on my trip and im back. I am delighted with the way it performed.
didnt notice and heat issues tho..

Yes, although it doesn't seem as bad today as it was yesterday.

yeah, i was about to post.
Mine is very warm, as soon as i use it, it begins to heat, up to 109°f (43°C) when i use internet.
Using only mobo player, it's a stable 103°F (39.5 C)
it's very hot, i do not understand.
I stopped a lot of background sync, no difference...
any idea?
edit: btw, big battery consomption...

My Sensation has been running very hot right out of the box. I have had it for a little more than 26 hours and it concerns me how hot it actuallly runs. Also just a few minutes ago I started getting a notice that the device had reset in an improper manner and asked if I wanted to report it to HTC. This has come up twice in the last 2 hours. I had the device setting on a table in a restaurant and thought i heard it do something now I know it was rebooting itself. The very high temps continue. I have a G2x and have not had all the issues other are reporting although it does get a little warm 96 degrees at times. I am at the point where I am going to take the Sensation back and wait for a short time and see if more kinks are worked out. The Sensation is a marvelous phone and will be almost untouchable if there are a few software updates to fix issues. Just do not want to wait like I have and did with the G2x and try to put up with overheating etc. I do really like the Sensation though.
Wow this is a new high. I was talking on the phone with headphones in, set it down on the table, started playing words with friends and hanging with friends simultaneously over 4g, and I noticed that the SCREEN felt hot. At this point I started to download a thermometer app. After playing another round of hanging, my headphones made beeping noises and the phone went from 5 bars 4g to no service. So I checked my thermometer app and it said 55 Celsius, which I then googled to be 132 Fahrenheit!!
Is this dangerous for the internals? I think the software killed the radio because of this. I put the phone in the freezer for 30 seconds and it came out at 50 degrees and the radio worked fine again.
Yes. While the system internals may be able to handle this temperature (although it's probably close to max), it's pretty dangerous to the battery and can ruin it.

if it does this frequently its usually the sign of a defective or dying battery or possibly bad phone... they should be able to give you a new battery or set you up with a replacement no problem, I think its a common issue from what I've heard in the VZ stores near me
blazing through on my 4G Droid Charge
I ordered this from tiger direct and i can't really go two Weeks without my phone so no giving it back. Also this phone works perfectly besides this one incident and the GPS, so i would rather not get a replacement that has data dropping, for example

I received a samsung charge yesterday from Asurion (Insurance through vzw) and after installing the latest 12-11 release post ee4>ep4 ota and odin, while phone screen was turned off in my pocket, I noticed the phone starting to get a bit warm. Next i noticed it starting to get hot as hell.. pulled it out, and yes it was excessively hot. Pulled battery, allowed it all to cool down, water marks were clean, no bulging to the battery or burns to the device. I then put battery back in, and turned it on. Noticed battery went from the 38% it was at, down to 7%. Has this happened to anyone else or just me?
Thanks guys,

That's definitely not normal. I'd flash back to stock, see if it happens again, and if it does, exchange both battery and phone.
It could be a phone problem, but it sounds to me like there is (or was) something running in the background that was causing drain. Any app that grabs the GPS and doesn't let it go could potentially cause this. Facebook is an occasional offender for me.

I am using the official app, though I haven't had the new one long enough to really make any observations of it. It was hit and miss. But, no, I can't say that I've seen temps like that, ever, except maybe once or twice when running in a car dock, in the windshield on a hot day.
