[Q] Republic Wireless Moto G Rooting - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone has success in rooting RW's Moto G?
Mine is going to get here tomorrow and there are some apps that I can't live without; of course, they all require root.
I see that the Moto X (for RW) has been successfully rooted, but no news on the G.
If anyone is able to root this Moto G, I'd love to hear about it, as would tons of other customers of Republic Wireless.
Note: If the rooting was successful and the phone seems stable, please share the details as to the process you used.

Update: After looking further into the situation, it seems that safestrap does not work on android 4.4.
The method for rooting the Moto X under RW requires safestrap, so maybe the Moto G does too?
Just my thoughts, it would be nice if someone responded with their own ideas.

You're the first I have heard of someone having the Republic Wireless version. I see they just became available last month. Do you know what the model # is? Is it a XT1031 like the Boost (Sprint) version? Did u get the 8 or 16 gig version? Could you post what your firmware version is? Have you tried unlocking the boot loader through the Motorola website? I'm really curious about the RW version of these phones. Verizon and Boost don't have 16 gig versions. So, these are the first CDMA versions available with 16 gig of storage.

Me too!
I just got this phone as well.
Not sure how to tell my model number. 16 G version. Firmware, is that baseband, kernal, or system version?
I tried unlocking the bootloader through Moto, the website said my phone was lot eligible.
Will post my info if you tell me where to look on the phone.
Tks,
E

The firmware is the system version. I just curious. I'm not really sure where to look up the model #. Mine just says "Moto G" on that screen. That's cool that you got a 16 gig version. I wish Verizon had those!

Right ON. Just switched from 7 years with Verizon....
My Model # is Moto G as well.

Unfortunately, no. So far, no one has found a way to get around these "not eligible" locked boot loaders.

Sorry for the super late response. Airdroid refers to it as the XT1031, so same as the Boost (and possibly all Sprint network) versions.

haven't got 4.4.4 yet

hey there, as u can see in title I haven't got 4.4.4 yet i have the 210.12.32.falcon_umts.Retail.en.US version. I live in Ireland, have they stop releasing 4.4.4 now ?
Some guys say that making root the update fails, and your version 4.4.4 was the first to be released

i got the same problem... it say my phone its already updated.
I am rooted on 4.4.3, i have a few motorola stock apps disabled (contextual services, assist, migrate) do i have to unroot to get update ?

It looks like you have the Global American GSM version of the phone. From what I can tell, they haven't been updated as of today. USA AWS and USA Global GSM Moto G are still running 4.4.3. Only the CDMA versions are running 4.4.4 in the US. Maybe if you flash the European ROM you'll get the 4.4.4 update.
- Bad news American Moto G owners. Motorola is pulling back from the US market and focusing on India, at this point don't be surprised if you never see Android L on your device. I'm still running 4.4.3. I've heard from other Moto G users running 4.4.4 did not fix any of issues previously reported.
What are the issues specifically? XT1034 Retail Canada has had 4.4.4 - I expect US to follow.
I had to shut off my OTA because I really am not ready for 4.4.4. I have the XT1045 and US version, and it is rooted. So I am not sure why some of you who are rooted are not getting the updates. That is very interesting indeed. Does Motorola have a bigger market in India vs anywhere else for them to concentrate on the India upgrades to 4.4.4?

- Motorola said recently that they are releasing Android L for Moto G (Gen2) devices in India, nothing about first Gen Moto G or Android L outside of India.
Umm weird. I got a notification saying system update so I go to settings>about phone > system updates and it closes straight away. What's going on ?

Finally, we get 4.4.4 after being stuck on 4.4.3 since June, July. I guess they forget about the Global version for a while or they are preparing us for lollipop.

Is there anyway i can get lollipop on this phone? a Cricket worker told me it will get lollipop very soon but it still hasn't since 2014..... Is their a way i can unlock the bootloader on kitkat 4.4.4 and install cm12? or do i need to just get another phone for lollipop? my variant is the xt1045.

For now the only way we can is to wait for them to release the update, which judging by how long Motorola is taking, will take like 10 years :/
You think hard resetting the phone, wiping the cached data, and updating the Motorola update service from Google play will do the trick for our variants. I know one guy who did it on G+ but his is an unlocked variant that he bought from Motorola and he has at&t

I got an email notification of your message, but I don't see it as PM. Apparently it was a "chat" message which for some reason I don't have Tapatalk access to. Anyway, I copied and pasted it here from my email. I PM'ed you and am aslo posting it here in the thread you started. Hope you get this reply.
1) if you have unlocked the bootloader, rooted and installed TWRP you may not see an OTA update. (If anyone has a different experience or more detailed information, please post.)
2) if your phone was locked to a specific carrier, you may not see an OTA update if you are not with that carrier and your phone is now unlocked.
If you have a "factory" XT1225 and are still on stock -- you should see OTA. Since you have a Moto Turbo XT1225 (India), that phone is not tied to any specific carrier (as far as I know), and is a "factory" XT1225. I own three XT1225 now -- two from Puerto Rico which were sold by Claro carrier and one from Mexico which actually came straight from Motorola factory in China to Mexico, then re-shipped to my U.S. address. The Mexico one was "factory", but the two Puerto Rico were initially locked to Claro. They were unlocked by the seller, but still any OTA updates only went to actual Claro customers (as far as I know). Whereas the Mexico XT1225 got an OTA update notice (while I was on stock and not rooted) -- even though I am in the U.S.
But if you are still on stock Android, have a "factory" XT1225 from any region, and you have not unlocked the bootloader and flashed TWRP custom recovery, then I do not know why you are not seeing an OTA update available.
However, you can download the update from any of the links provided in the forum and manually flash it. Note that you will still be on 5.0.2, just an updated version. Whereas all the custom ROMs we have (CM12.1 and Resurrection Remix, as well as Mokee) are all 5.1.1 Lollipop.
Even though I am on CM12.1, I was on "11" Moto Turbo radio for a long time. I recently flashed "16" Puerto Rico to two of my XT1225. The 3rd is still unrooted and on stock for now. It's a backup.

Interesting. Looks like you have an engineering sample or a phone submitted for government testing?
The Moto Turbo XT1225 launched in India with 5.0.2, software version "11". Soon after, the other XT1225 models (Moto Maxx) in Latin America countries started receiving 5.0.2, upgrading from 4.4.4. Factory versions were first, with carrier versions following. Brazil and Mexico factory versions got "13" and later "16". India finally got "16", after having "11" for a long, long time.
Don't know why you didn't get "16" via OTA, but you can download and flash it manually. However, I found Lollipop 5.02. to be laggy. 5.1.1 is much smoother, so that's why I'm running custom ROM.
Ok my device is engineering as it says in picture.
Is it good thing or bad ?
Custom Roms are satble than stock ?
5.1.1 which you are using is stable than 5.0.2 stock ?
I have never updated phone manually as I do not know how to flash.
This is my only phone so I am concerned about flashing...
I'm not sure I'd argue it's smoother than stock. Just a lot more control. With that control and a few kernel tweaks it may very well be though.
Has anyone ever verified the engineering phone is bootloader unlocked?

On stock 5.0.2 "11", I had lots of lag. Initial stock 5.0.2 was horrible, compared to the smoothness of stock 4.4.4. Maybe 5.0.2 "16" is better, I don't know. I went to custom ROM 5.1.1 long before then and never went back.

I don't think it's already unlocked, but of course it's easily unlock-able. Just need to go to the Motorola website and they'll give you the code.
If it is already unlocked, then yeah that's one less step to flashing TWRP and rooting.
I'd never expect a stolen Motorola engineering phone to behave like a normal phone.

You're right that phone may not act like normal. If I'm looking at the screenshot right, it only has 32GB internal storage -- instead of the retail 64GB? All the retail XT1225 (Moto Turbo XT1225/Moto Maxx XT1225 ) sold to consumers have 64GB internal storage... so even though it says "Moto Turbo" in your settings, your phone is definitely a development prototype never meant to be released to the public.
The product/variant also doesn't match an XT1225. This is probably why auto updates don't occur. Manually flashing likely works fine though and is the proper solution to updates.
Sorry for posting in this thread. I have XT1254. Cannot understand what does "Device is ENGINEERING" mean for me. Do I need to pay for sunshine unlocking?

Device is Engineering usually means it's a prototype device not meant to be sold to the public. There are exceptions and I'll get to that...

That one just above is obviously a test phone from Motorola Engineering dept not meant for retail sale.
The exceptions are the Motorola phones are made in China, and on the black market in China you could get some Droid Turbo XT1254 phones with bootloaders "unlocked from the factory". A few months after the XT1254 was released here in the U.S., one guy went to China on a business trip from the U.S. and bought one. He bought an bootloader unlocked premium Verizon XT1254 on the street. How would such a phone be available for sale? Well, nothing legal... Either the phone was stolen from the factory production line before bootloader was locked down, to be shipped to Verizon in the U.S. or it was stolen from the department that tests software and they don't want their bootloaders locked down. Or some hybrid of the two -- a production line device stolen and the thief has proprietary Motorola development software that can unlock the bootloader. In those cases, it would not be a prototype device but an actual retail device. Again, I'm talking about the XT1254 phone sold in China on the black market, not your phone.
You did nothing wrong. You are just lucky.
In the other case discussed in this thread, it was obviously a prototype not meant for sale as it was an XT1225 with only 32GB internal memory. All retail XT1225 have 64GB internal memory, with ballistic nylon (which is really ballistic nylon + kevlar underneath). The XT1225 was the most premium of the Quarks (XT1225/XT1250/XT1225), as they also had more HSPA and LTE bands (but no CDMA, which most people outside the U.S. don't need anyway) and had bootloader unlockable from Motorola website (since they were not Verizon phones). But his phone was a 32GB XT1225 -- which doesn't exist, except perhaps inside Motorola test labs. So, no way to predict if Quark custom ROMs would work correctly on it, as they are developed for retail phones..
But yours is a 64GB XT1254 also with ballistic nylon and your bootloader is already unlocked. So, congratulations.
ChazzMatt, it's interesting that it has Verizon logo and still is "engineering".
P. S. SunShine app told that it can unlock bootloader for $25 Hopefully i checked fastboot before that

XT1225, XT1250 have free bootloader unlock code from Motorola, but XT1254 requires a paid exploit.

Unfortunately, no it doesn't. Virgin Canada is not associated with Virgin Mobile USA in any way. Virgin Canada is a completely different company and actually uses gsm phones, not the cdma phones used on VM USA. For what it's worth, VM USA is not known for rolling out updates, timely or otherwise.
It seems the only way to update the software to Marshmallow is to buy an unlocked version of the device (as I have seen 6.0 on the unlocked device at a Best Buy demo) , or unlock the Virgin Mobile one you already have. Otherwise, I think Virgin is never going to release an OTA for the update.

I thought the Virgin Mobile version was not eligible for bootloader unlocking on Moto's site? There is no other known way to bootloader unlock the device. And an unlocked version (ie. full retail version) would not be CDMA since Moto did not sell those directly or through a 3rd party like Amazon, only carriers, so it wouldn't work on VM anyway. Not to call you a liar but I don't think you were looking at a Virgin Mobile device...

No you're right - What I meant to say is that the version of the phone I saw with 6.0 was an unlocked one - not one from VM. I do not think (as hopeful as I am, still) that VM is ever going to release an update to 6.0 - They usually just release phones with the OS it comes with and that's all you get.
So is there anyway to get Marshmallow or not?9

I'm on virgin mobile, with my moto g3.
I got my boot loader unlocked and TWRP along with xposed. All that works great. But everytime I go and try a custom rom I have to revert to the TWRP backup. And that works fantastic. Just takes it time.
I'd really like a mm rom for this guy. This stock rom sucks the big one.

It is here and it is NOT working for me. After re-flashing original recovery and riding of TWRP it loads maybe 15% and hits me with an error. No error code just the animation for a split second and it reboots.
