Evidently KitKat does not allow third party apps to move, copy or manipulate files anywhere on the microsd card unless those files are in a subdirectory path that matches the name of the application trying to manipulate the files. This means many file explorers and other such apps are completely broken. Please sign this petition to help encourage Google to change their ways with this decision:

The only way to totally get around it without rooting is to connect your phone to a PC with your phone as an MTP Media device. Then from your PC you can move stuff from internal to external memory etc. It's just a leeeetle slooooooow. (ARGH!÷÷/% €€£¥&^\○|□□>♤♡)

Or you could update your apps...
App developers just have to update the permissions of their apps and they work fine.
For instance, ES File Explorer can move, cut, paste, rename and delete things just fine. And no, I'm not rooted.

Aren't such apps using a rather flaky loophole to do this which Google will surely close in due course? I can't remember where I read it but if an app is doing anything more than creating its own app specific individual folder on the SD card and writing to that, it's using a workaround that wasn't intended.
Personally I'm ready for a change from Android now. The rot really started when Google forced people to sign up to G+ to leave reviews in the Play Store and it has gradually got worse from there. I seem to recall a certain company called Microsoft got into all sorts of trouble for bundling their own web browser on PCs, but now Google seems to be forcing all sorts of restrictions and conditions on people (wanna use the Play Store fully? You need a G+ account). Daft changes to the GUI that put frequently used items on large screened devices out of reach for single handed use, the demise of the menu button, changes to core apps that either remove functionality or put it further out of reach (e.g Maps) and now KitKat's war on SD cards really make me wish I had kept my old HD2. I would honestly rather go back to Windows Mobile 6.5 with HTC Sense, Co0kie's Home Tab, Task Façade, TomTom GB and a few other apps at the moment. Sorry, rant over, my blood sugar level must be low

Well you also have to remember that google wants to do away with SD cards for android devices all together. Then even removed the coding from the base OS so now OEM have to re-add it for devices with them.

Yes, from my point of view that is real a shame. Of course, if OEMs started releasing 128GB devices at a sensible price and using the cloud became reliable for people like me who like to venture outside of urban areas where network coverage is good, I wouldn't care about micro SD cards or USB OTG. I still like Android, but hopefully Ubuntu Touch will provide an alternative, or maybe Microsoft will keep adding features to Windows Phone (though after the way they dumped 6.5 for 7, then dumped 7 for 8 with a 'fresh' start each time I'm reluctant to give them another chance). If Apple launched a sensibly priced device with a 5" screen I would give that a go too now. Who knows, perhaps I'll go back to having an iPod Classic and a feature phone. Back when I had an HTC Elf my hopes for the future of owning an all in one device that had all my music stored locally, provided sat nav, gaming, web browsing and PC functinality when docked were high, but all these years later we're still not quite where i'd like to be. I accept that I'm in the minority here and most people are probably happy though

That is strange. Because of knox my galaxy note pro is not rooted and on an external sd card Es File Explorer can’t rename a file. "Cut and paste" is not really "cut and paste" (I mean it doesn’t work as it usually do when source and destination are on the same drive/sd card. Just rewriting the path of the file without moving the datas) but "Copy to destination then delete source" so it takes a very long time to move a big file from a directory to another.
What I understand is that even if developers update their apps with the last api problems will not be fixed. Files Explorer will use turn around where they can and edition apps will not be able to edit files out of their directories etc.

I've also noticed renaming doesn't work.
Not on a 3rd party app nor on stock.
And I also can't rename anything over MTP through my pc, either. It just crashes explorer.exe and disconnects. A different computer, cable and OS don't make any difference. But then MTP has been a nightmare from day 1.
Then that's some corruption

Connect to a computer is not confortable and Es File Explorer is a better tool than the samsung built in file explorer, less options and unable to rename a file extension (I don't think I missed an option).
android 4.4 kitkat is so restrictive that it looks like a trial version, lot of pain in many cases. The prize to pay to have the fully operational version and have the right to use the tools you need is to root, increment knox and void warranty. This is very bad from google and samsung.
Sorry for my poor English.

Its not that simple . Phones and computers actually fall under different categories for some laws. But the take away is that Google isn't forcing you to use the Play Store. Its their own software and they can require you to do whatever they legally want in order to preserve that eco system. They could easily prove in court that not having people sign in with "real" information lead to good and bad reviews being bought and sold. You also have the option of installing apps from unknown sources, so your not locked in. I don't necessarily agree with the ruling to fine Microsoft over the whole IE thing, sounds like people *****ing to me . Use IE to download Firefox or whatever and get over it. Companies aren't supposed to be fined for Anti-Trust over not helping their competition, just from intentionally locking their competitors out of markets, specially with dirty or illegal tricks. See: Intel.

Ohhh, all of the above said, I understand the need for limiting apps from modifying things on an SD card, as long as it prevents malicious code from doing malicious things and allows legitimate apps to function. I'll be following this as it develops :|
hmm, this sounds like something apple would do!

You can, because you have root. You cannot edit files on your SD Card only if:
1) You don't have root.
2) You're using a file explorer that does not has the workaround implemented in it.

*** THIS IS A BETA PROGRAM ***
(Though it is fully function)
SyncIt is a basically a Dropbox extention, it uses the Dropbox API and your Dropbox Account to keep any specified file updated in you Dropbox as well as on any other Android devices with SyncIt installed.
What this means is say you have to have a certain game always up to date on all of your android devices? Well simply select it in SyncIt and have it installed on both devices and SyncIt will monitor that file and keep it up to date on both devices.
*** How To Use ***
Device 1 - Simply use the built in file explorer to select any file or folder(Pro) you wish to sync. They will automatically be uploaded as the files are updated. If you wish to add another device first go and long-press the given file/folder and click "Backup" for all of our files/folders listed.
Device 2-Ect - Simply login to, the files will be downloaded. Then go long press each file/folder and click "Restore". Once done for each file/folder you are ready to go. This is a one time process.

This app supports both regular file system and root file system. For plants vs zombies it is /data/data/com.popcap.pvz/ but I personally have not gotten pvz to work. But I used the hd version n regular version. If u have the sane version it should work. In the pvz dir ure gonna wanna sync /files/userdata/user.dat n user1.dat(there will b more if u have more users)

I like the idea of this app, but can't completely test it out because my tablet is at home at the moment. I have some questions. I have tested sharing a file, but it hasn't been uploaded to dropbox. I just have the SyncIt folder and the xml file in my dropbox. Do I have to have it installed on another device before it will upload? Any ideas what files I need to sync Angry Birds Rio and Cut the Rope? I was thinking about just syncing titanium backup files, but the actual data files would be more convenient.

No it should upload with just one device, but the version up right now is quite outdated now. I will upload a new version hopefully tomorrow. With this release there will b a paid ($1) n free version. Both versions are fully functional with the free version being linked to syncing 5 files. The full is unlimited with the additional feature if syncing while folders (dynamically).
As for angry birds this app works great for it (i use it for this my self lol) u would want to sync.
/data/data/com.rivio.*.files/.flurryagent.*
/data/data/com.rivio.*.files/highscore.lua
/data/data/com.rivio.*.files/settings.lua
Syncing these work, idk if they are all required tho.

I would be happy to pay for an app that does this. I am actually surprised it hasn't got more attention. I imagine google eventually adding a native solution much like how apple has icloud to backup/sync application data. Anyway, I still haven't been able to get it to upload anything. The xml file in dropbox lists the file name I tested, but that file isn't in the SyncIt folder in my dropbox. I then deleted the first file I chose to sync in the app, and then chose the 3 files you mentioned for Angry Birds. However, the xml file has not been updated to reflect the new files, and nothing has been uploaded to dropbox. I'm running a version of CM7.1 (Android 2.3.4) on my Evo. I suppose I can just wait for the updated version. I do have some suggestions for future versions of the app. Using a file explorer to share with the app only lets you choose one file at a time (unless there is some other file explorer program that will let you). If you allowed file choosing within the app, you could probably allow for folders and multiple files. Also, what would be really cool is if you could just choose from a list of apps the data you would like to sync. I assume this is possible since Titanium Backup lets you backup and restore app data associated with an app. Also, a few more control settings would be nice like only sync while connected to wifi and/or while plugged in.
EDIT: also, every time I turn my screen on a get a Loading Finished bubble a few seconds later.

Yes SyncIt runs every time u turn your phone on or off(thats when it checks if there is anything new). While this sounds like a bad idea(battery wise) the way ive implemented it it uses very little. I will most likely remove the "Loading Finished" toast.
As i said in my prior post(but did not elaborate on, or maybe i didnt say it. im to lazy to look xD). The new version will support adding files from external file explorers as well it will have a internal file browser that supports root. With it you will be able to select files(not multiple tho, maybe in an update) and folders. When selecting a folder it will sync all files in all sub folders up to a certain cumulative size(dont wanna kill dropbox lol).
IDK why my ur version wouldn't work, tho to clear it out completely u would need to delete the syncit folder in dropbox online then clear the cache of SyncIt. Otherwise it will just download the version from dropbox. New version will have an option to clear all.
Will this work with every game bc I have to admit their are quite a few games that I hate having to start over again just bc I got another android device to play it on.

Honestly its trial & error. I have tried with two games Plants vs Zombies and Angry Birds, PvZ did not work(very sad about this) but Angry Birds did. These are the only two games ive tried.
Well, I eventually tried this on my asus transformer and got it to upload to Dropbox. It did start syncing to my phone and all my progress from angry birds on my tablet synced over to my phone. However, when I completed a level on my phone, that would not sync back to the tablet. I did get my phone to upload to Dropbox, though, after reinstalling the program. However, when I turn my tablet on, my tablet won't download the from Dropbox. When I open angry birds back up, none of the progress from the the phone is there. Then, I go to my phone and my old progress from the the tablet is synced back to the phone and I have to complete the level again. I will keep testing to see if I can get it to work correctly. There are definitely some bugs. Sometimes I get a force close on my phone. Also there is a big delay in asking for root permissions. I completely uninstalled/reinsalled it from my phone yesterday and it wasn't till today that it asked for root permissions.
will this remain free after the beta period ?
great idea. i've been thinking about this for a while. how about making it with an extensible architecture so that people can register plugins for certain games such as 'PvZ' or 'Angry Birds' with options such as HD, non-HD (tablet/phone) free/paid, etc... and with multiple (relative?) paths pointing to the directories with files that need to be sync'ed. this way, people won't have to manually add directories. this would probably drive more user adoption.
i used to do this on my ubuntu laptops to sync firefox pref's and such. it's great that you actually implemented it. thanks!

I thought i had discussed tho i guess not. After beta there will be a Paid and Free version. As of right now free version will be limited to selecting specific files and a total of 5(maybe more) to sync. The paid version will be able to sync whole folders(as long as the total size of its sub files are under a set limit, dont wanna kill ur phone/battery/dropbox lol) and an unlimited # of files.
As to the user below "Plugins" would be easy to do, hard part would be distributing them.

Look above , tho what do you mean such as "HD, non-HD) ect?
Also update on SyncIt it is damn near done, i should have finished the RC already actually. All functionality is done(minus plugin architectural mentioned above), i simply need to restructure it so that all the functions run in the background. Which in the scope of everything is fairly easy.
EDIT: Also i have no intention of charging more then $1 for this .
Ha, ya near me too it. I'd been thinking of this as a backup app for a while. Now that I have a tablet I started playing with the dropbox api to write it. Looking forward to testing it.
Can this handle file system files (ie use root)? Does it sync the ownership/permissions correctly?
Perfect timing for me - looking into a tablet and was wondering how to sync things. When this works (still in beta, so bound to be bugs), this will cover anything file based!
My initial thought that I was wondering how I would deal with - how to synch my location in eBooks. Now just need to see where that info is stored in iReader & Cool Reader & Kindle (for non-kindle books).
--
Edit: With only 1 device (for testing) is there a way to tell the phone - "Go look for new versions of the files in dropbox now!" So when/if I manually change something via my pc, it will copy to the right place on my phone?
Thanks

Hi folks,
I'm relatively new to XDA and similarly new to smartphones. My old dumbphone broke down and finally got an android device, samsung galaxy note, I really liked the huge screen.
I've been using linux for 2 decades now and chose an android device because everyone was telling me how it is linux-based which sounded like a good selling point. I'm quite pleased actually but have a few questions all of them related to my expectations that the OS will be linux-like:
1. I've been reading about rooting the phone and the like, but nobody explained the basics: why is it a special procedure to root the phone, why isn't it simply multi-user like any desktop linux? You could log in like a normal user or like root and that would be it. I guess there are serious reasons for the current design but it certainly doesn't seem natural at all.
2. In linux I can always figure out what the UI does in terms of the command line, so for instance if I use something on the UI (click an icon or bring up a menu) I can almost always do the same from the command line. This way I really know what's going on and if needed I can customize things. Case in point: right now I have to tap the phone a couple of times until I get to the broadband data transfer ON/OFF switch. It would be really neat to have an icon on the home screen that would do this. But I can't figure out what "command" needs to get executed to bring up the data transfer ON/OFF switch, so I really don't know how to create such an icon. This is just an example, I could come up with others easily, stuff I'd like to do, but can't figure out what happens under the hood. And it seems people create all sorts of simple trivial apps for these kinds of simple trivial tasks, when it should be possible to hack something up really fast. Any pointers on how to see what a UI interaction does and how to replicate it in a slightly different context? For example the broadband data transfer ON/OFF switch on the home screen?
3. I'm missing bash and top, ping, kill, cat, ls, etc, etc, Is there such a thing? (I already found connectbot but it would be nice to have scp and ssh inside a shell).
4. On my linux notebook I have a bunch of ad servers in /etc/hosts redirected somewhere else so they don't consume my bandwidth and don't clutter the webpage I'm trying to read. Can I have something similar on the phone? Is there something like an editor? I normally use vi, would be great to have that on the phone.
5. What controls the startup applications on boot? There are a bunch of stuff I bet I don't need but can't tell the phone to not start them. I guess I need to "root" the phone for this, but see question 1 Something related, I heard it's not possible to delete the factory installed bloatware without "rooting" the phone, is that true?
I guess that's it if anyone would make me feel as at home on the android phone as I feel at home on a linux desktop/notebook/etc I would be really grateful!
Cheers,
Daniel
1) Because the phone manufacturers lock Avg. Joe out of the system files to keep them from doing potential harm to the software. It saves your carrier millions per year in technical support costs.
2) Hold your finger down on an open section of the homescreen to open up a menu that will allow you to create shortcuts to important commands. You may also wish to install a custom Launcher that has more customizable features compared to whatever stock Launcher your carrier put on it.
Addendum: Root your phone, then install "Terminal Emulator" from the Play Store. Type in "su" and you'll then have superuser access to your phone's command line. From that point, it's pretty much exactly what you'd expect from Linux.
3) See Addendum to 2.
4) You could do it yourself, or let others do it for you. Root your phone, then install "AdFree" from the Play Store. Set up AdFree to automatically update and you're good to go.
5) 2 ways to get rid of bloatware, either root and use the Terminal to delete it yourself, or root and install a custom ROM that already has it removed. I highly, highly suggest rooting and switching to Cyanogenmod 9 as soon as possible. Go to your phone's specific forum on this site for instructions for practically everything you could ever want to do with your phone.
Note to 5: Your carrier sticks its bloatware into your system files, instead of in your user accessible app data. To change system files in any way, you'll need root access to your phone.
Here's a link to the development section for the Galaxy Note, please read all the rules and very thoroughly read all instructions before actually doing anything to change your device in any way:

I see, makes some sense for them, but I'm wondering if Microsoft can afford to have an Administrator account exist on Windows, why can't android be shipped that way (rhetorical question).
Addendum: Root your phone, then install "Terminal Emulator" from the Play Store. Type in "su" and you'll then have superuser access to your phone's command line. From that point, it's pretty much exactly what you'd expect from Linux.

Because Windows can't afford to alienate power users by locking down their system. If they did, they'd be Apple. Also, remember that it's not Google that's locking you out of root, it's the phone manufacturer/carrier; which aren't exactly known for being bastions of ethics...
Windows is actually starting to lock you out of functions with Windows 8, the ARM version of Win8 can't sideload applications.
Cyanogenmod might not be officially supported for the Note, but there's probably a few devs on the Note's forum that are unofficially making a port. Try this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552554
There is a way to close the final window if you go into the browser menu and close it, but it's really not necessary. Android will auto-close old background tasks if you start to run low on memory. You may also want to look into downloading a different browser from the Play Store. I've never bothered, but I've heard good words about Opera Mobile. Dolphin HD is absurdly popular, but at it's heart it's basically the stock browser reskined, which offends my sensibilities, lol.
Also, if you're on ATT, you may want to check out these instructions on how to get unlimited data on smartphones for $15 per month:

Thanks for all the useful info!
While looking further around on the phone I stumbled upon another thing which would be quite trivial on ordinary linux: how do I see the creation/acces/modification times for any file? I've installed Terminal Emulator from github, "ls" works, but not "ls -al".
Also, how do I check if there is any network access at all or if an application tries to access the network or not? On linux I would run the program though strace and that would show me all system calls so I would see what the application is up to. For instance the S Note application (it's a samsung note taking application for the Note) takes a long time when I save a note, which makes me think maybe it wants to sync the file to a samsung cloud service or something like that. How do I check what takes so long for this app, in particular if it wants to access the network or just plain slow?

With the terminal, I'm not sure, but you could download one of many file managers from the Play Store and view the files' properties through that.
Edit: I have Terminal Emulator from the Play Store, and "ls -al" works fine for me (see screenshot). I'm also using Bash for my shell, so that could be it. Also, see about Busybox below.

You can probably find an app in the Play Store with that functionality. Wireshark is in there, so I'm sure something like strace has been done.
Also, look into installing Busybox from the Play Store. It provides a lot of the normal Linux terminal commands you might be missing.

Sweet! So how did you get Bash? Is it something working together with Terminal Emulator or a separate application (whatever the appropriate android lingo is )? If I search the play store for "bash" I don't really get anything resembling a shell, but probably I'm just overlooking something obvious. Installing this would be a great start.

Going the Other way
Hi
Android and it UI's is not like any X11 based desktop, but buying an android devices is what got me into using linux as my main desktop and I tend to think as them as one and them same at a command line level at least.
If you comfortable with building from source you can cross compile any tools you are missing.
They numerous time saving widgets and the like on google play. i.e wifi toggling which sit right on your main screen.
You'll find that most utilities and useful stuff has been ported to android.
If you want to use vim I would download "terminal ide" which is an IDE which runs on android, if your familiar with java you can create application directly on the devices
it also contains bash, busybox and more.
Busybox is a multicall binary. Androids native one is called toolbox and can be found in /system/bin. If you want to port your favourite bash scripts over then there's script managers which will run scripts at startup etc.
Obviously with these optimized binary all the help and in the case of android toolbox, any command not need by the system is general left out. It's not meant for as a general purpose shell.
Trivia: splitting up you parameters when using toolbox can sometime help e.g "ls -l -a" works where as "ls -al" didn't
You can remount the root and /system as read writable, a man of twenty years linux doesn't need the dangers of that explaining.
There's a plethora of Root tools for removing system packages and general tweaking, google play is you friend in this case.
If the android UI really does not live up to your expectations than you always install Ubuntu.
When you rooted your device and unlocked you bootloader and basically voided any manufacturers warrenty (not something I care about, but I t seems important to some people ) that came with the device you just got a computer with a different cpu architecture, so the opportunities are limitless with what you can do with it
Have Fun!

Hello,
I currently own a LG E900 and just recently I noticed a little scratch on the display. I know this is gorilla glass and it worked really great for more than a year and I don't even know how the scratch got there, but I thought that it might be time to upgrade.
I know that most stuff is synced using Windows Live but there are still a couple of things where I am not sure:
1. What about contacts where I linked their Facebook, Twitter and Windows Live profiles? If they do not have the same name in Facebook and Windows Live, will their linking be preserved?
2. Is it possible to transfer stored data from apps and games? I mostly care about my saved progress from e.g. angry birds, can you transfer that without being banned or so from Xbox Live for cheating?
3. Zune creates full backups and I guess this would be the best you can get, but can you restore them onto another device (I am considering buying either another LG E900 or a HTC Titan 2, but this thread should not be about which phone to chose right now) or is this somehow tied to the IMIE?
All of your contacts are synced from their various accounts. None are currently stored on the phone. Your linked contacts will link if the names are the same. If names differ, you'll have to relink as necessary.
Game and application data cannot be transferred to the new phone unless said game/app offers a cloud backup option. XBoxLive games will remember scores, but I'm not sure about progress.
To my knowledge, a backup can only be restored to the phone it was made from. This means you can't even get the same model and restore from a different backup. Sucky, I know.
That is correct. Manually (using an app like Root Webserver or WPDM), you could back up your Angry Birds isolated storage folder and then restore it on the new phone (if you get another phone that you can achieve at least root-unlock with). I don't believe you're at risk of getting flagged for cheating unless you try to *edit* those game files.
That sound interesting.
Is root-unlock the same as interop-unlock?
No. Interop-unlock can allow apps to gain additional privileges, possibly including TCB privileges ("root" if it were a Unix-like OS; this is what's meant by "root unlock"). However, by default interop-unlock does not grant those permissions.
Root unlock is most commonly gained through either using interop-unlock on a supported device to then install WP7 Root Tools, or by using a full-unlocked custom ROM (full-unlock includes root-unlock).
Thanks, I guess I will be able to figure out the rest on my own since interop-unlock seems to be prettt easy on LG devices.
Just to be sure, if I copy the Isolated Storage from a game to my PC and back onto a different phone, that will still work?

Angry Birds does not seem to require phone or owner identity privileges, so I doubt it is.
Also, keep in mind that the Titan II has no unlock at all yet - you couldn't get your files back on it then.
So recently the GNote 3 got the Kitkat update. A lot of users cannot write/delete into the external, and many apps stopped working.
Does the Note Pro have this same issue?
Yes.
Google apparently has done this by design with KitKat. I hate it, but I can't blame Samsung.
It's a mixture of Google and Samsung that have stopped this.
Google changed the write permissions and Samsung didn't change them.
If you root it is as simple as changing one line in one file
Sent from my SM-P900 using XDA Premium HD app
Ok, I mean what is the use of having external memory if you can not write it ?
I can not use cloud storage may sound nice but my ISP gives me almost nothing for data and charges a fortune for what little they give me.
Easy to fix if you root.
It is easy to root too, but rooting trips Knox, are we to take a chance nothing goes wrong with our devices?
Rooting is great, use Titanium Backup to freeze and uninstall "bloat", but I keep reading about Knox.
Seen the solution, edit a file only thing the next people in the thread said the solution does not work.
You should still be able to attach the card to your PC copy files ?
Currently have a card in the microSD slot, rooted tab, edited build.prop. I'm able to see both internal and external SD Card locations when plugged in via USB to my PC. I'm also able to read files placed there from within the applications that I use. Things that I've tried include exporting files to the external microSD from one program and deleting them using another, dragging and dropping from my PC to external card and then accessing the files from within various applications on the tablet.

Hello All,
Since kitkat 4.4.2 was released on the Galaxy Note 3, many users were unable to write files to the External SD Card. Below is a simple fix for rooted users on the Galaxy Note 3 N9005 ( International Snapdragon Variant).
**Please be advised that I have only tested this on my personal N9005. However, you are free to test it on your own devices at your own risk!! **
1. Using a root-enabled file manager, navigate to /system/etc/permissions
2. Edit platform.xml and find the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission.
3. Add an additional group definition for this permission...
4. Save the changes to the file.
5. Restart.

Rooting means Knox = 1 why would I want to throw out my warranty on a device I paid $750 for? That is an awful big risk

I've rooted every device I've owned and I've never had any reason to file a warranty claim on any of them. Before I root I do spend a few days pushing my machine to the limit and attempting to crash it through abnormal use. If it functions as expected, I root. It took me about eight hours before I decided to go ahead and root the 12.2.

If you are so worried about your warranty why not go and buy a Square Trade warranty. Doesn't matter if you root or whatever, they'll still warranty it.
3. If you read use that little search button you be surprised what you can discover.
Your question about rooting has already been asked time and time again, and guess what, there's also a proper forum for that as well.
Seems to me you bought this device because it was new and shiny, lol. Maybe you might want to search a little harder before posting next time.

Well if one is afraid loosing warranty. Do not root or edit. Peronally i nver had to claim warranty so i dont know what will happen if i have to..
But if one does excactly what is described. Nothing will go wrong. If you edit the file with rootexplorer it will make a backup, so if something goes wrong you are always able to restore the original file.
In this post you find what to edit

I just popped in a 32gb Sony SD card, and successfully copied over some files without issue. I have root. I wonder why only some devices are having this issue?
On the decision to root - for me, personally, the device isn't worth the money it cost unless it's rooted. Maybe I'm spoiled, but after not having used a single phone or tablet without it since my OG Droid, I cant imagine not having it. I tend to baby my electronics, often to an excess. That usually only lasts for the first year, though. By that time, I'm already eyeing something new and a lot of warranties are no longer valid. With phones I've always gotten insurance, so I could drop it off a cliff onto a landmine and replace it for 50 bucks.
Having a Riff box is nice as well. I doubt it supports this tablet yet, but it has more than paid for itself by fixing a few bricked phones. I was able to reverse a Knox upgrade on one if my s3's. According to this, even with Jtag it is impossible to reverse the warranty bit. Bummer. I'd still recommend one to anyone who runs the risk of bricking something on a near daily basis.
I will add, though, that I encountered something new while trying to perform an adb backup today. When I tried to "adb root" it says "adb cannot run as root in production devices." I can use su inside an adb shell, though.

Depends on what you're using to write or delete.
For example, try with file managers.
Using the built in My Files, I can write and delete files on the SD card no problem- the app must have read/write permission.
Now install a file manager like X-plore. (personally, my favorite)
Trying to write or delete files on SD fails- it has no access. I've noticed other third party apps are the same.
I'm curious what apps you've using to write/delete with?
Heck, I've noticed even Hancom Office will only save files to its own designated area of the SD card, not just anywhere I want to save.
The other day I was infuriated when I was marking up a PDF using Repligo Reader (file off SD card) and the app failed when trying to save. (I'd forgotten about this when it happened.) Worse, there was no save as and choose a writable location- I just lost what I'd done.
Anyway, I know I can just root and fix this, I just haven't felt like rooting my brand new $750 Note 12.2 yet. I know some people root expensive devices more often than they change underwear, but not all of us do. I'll probably do it, but mainly it just annoys me that Google thinks this insanity is a good idea in the first place. They're getting more and more like Apple- our way or the highway, let's force the user into what we want' nonsense these days.
I'm aware, that only a few of my comrades in
XDA'a
R
M
Y may be aware of this issue, and change since the migration to android 11. To help illustrate to you I recently, thru google takeout, downloaded my 45+gb gp music library, all to which it's destiny was sd card storage (as chosen thru my Chrome Browser settings). After all files were unzipped and transferred , the available storage space on my sd card hadn't charged! So yes, my sd card is OK too, as affirmation to one of the replies I received earlier stating since gaining Android 11 rhey hadn't seen any changes. And by ok, you nust mean the sd card doesn't unmount itself at will, or randomly throw-up an error msg like, "sd file corruption detected," just for giggles!
As stated earlier, only a handful of folks I know over on discord's SamCentral are aware of this change, so there's been little discussion of file allocation tables & tweaks, i.e., formatting FAT 32(or that's the current default)idk...this isn't my field but imo, I think they're saying currently everything is being shifted to external stg. '0' which is the common ground for all or most of Android O/S's, thus "arming" their decision with the "no purchase necessary" routine. Fact is, most folks don't require more than half-a-gig or more of on-board mobile device storage. "The needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few, or the one."(RIP Mr. Spock, Leonard Nimoy). So,, if this smells like a patch of sorts to you, why haven't we heard anything, and when can some of us expect to get our money's worth for our sd card purchase(mine, 256gb = $100, in Spring of '19). Some of the "fake-news" spreaders over there(lol) are saying the most recent samsung shifts to Microsoft based apps/services & cross-syncing is the root of the cause, and they're probably getting closer to plotting a solution now that the big hill has been championed(ref. to And. 11 + One UI 3.0-no project completion)! I miss the functionality of not being able to use an interface I paid for!
(If any of this I've shared here fact-cks.out to be valid, and I become a hero of sorts, does this mean I may gain some of that XDA "street-cred" and snag a couple of likes)?!

What exactly is the issue here? Not formatted? Can't see specific data? I went through the whole beta and now on release and my SD card is "exactly" the same as before with the exception that some apps can't see other apps' directories which is a "feature" from Google.

The real obvious missing link to me was, for instance, when I'm signed in and surfin on my browser(Chrome, Samsung Internet, etc) and I save/download a file, it doesn't actually get saved on the physical sd card like it did before, rather, the o/s leaves the file in a limbo state of sorts, with whatever browser app!? I got my n20u1_5G back in 9/20, so while on Q if I saved, d/led a file i.e., using Chrome, I would go thru my Files then sd, then Android, then data, then find chrome(com.google.shrome), and there she is!
But, since beta school, whilst on 11, I do my Lil routine(as b-4), and when I goto Android then data, there's nothing, no app files(google or Samsung, as there were b-4)!? I hope I'm explaining the deal well enough here, as I couldn't be alone with this issue! Anyone using a stg card knows what I'm saying that isn't to be seen anymore! I'm using the same 250gb (high-end) Samsung card as b4, when I purchased my handset thru b-buy.com last fall(see jpg).
(Sorry 4 delay in my reply)☠
"Android, then data, then find chrome(com.google.shrome), and there she is!"
BINGO. Yeah, that's NOT happening any more. Those folders are now SECURED from any other apps viewing them. Only the owning app can view. The files are probably there, nice and safe.
Right now I know of 3 ways to view them. Total commander file manager in the app store filed the appropriate request to google for "total access" and you can view them if you hook your phone up to a computer. The 3rd way is quite a bit uglier requiring you to make an activity to a legacy file manager that google accidentally left in android 11 but hid. I'd have to dig around a lot to find those instructions again.
It's called "SCOPED STORAGE"... Go read about it and cry.... I know I did.
So, NO, you aren't going nutz based on this. However, that doesn't preclude other ways to go nutz!!!!

Thanks for the reply...I've heard bits/pieces in talks with geek friends, and I appreciate your expertise here on this topic! But, why aren't the bytes getting gobbled -up(like when viewing sd card stg. available from the pull--down menu or from device care app)? I downloaded nearly 45 gb of audio files to my sd card, with absolutely no change there, but you see the stg reduction to internal storage. For what benefit, to them , google? Or just more of the ongoing sparing the two of 'em are constantly a part of! lol/smh
