Kitkat and SD Card issues - Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So recently the GNote 3 got the Kitkat update. A lot of users cannot write/delete into the external, and many apps stopped working.
Does the Note Pro have this same issue?

Yes.
Google apparently has done this by design with KitKat. I hate it, but I can't blame Samsung.

It's a mixture of Google and Samsung that have stopped this.
Google changed the write permissions and Samsung didn't change them.
If you root it is as simple as changing one line in one file
Sent from my SM-P900 using XDA Premium HD app

Ok, I mean what is the use of having external memory if you can not write it ?
I can not use cloud storage may sound nice but my ISP gives me almost nothing for data and charges a fortune for what little they give me.
Easy to fix if you root.
It is easy to root too, but rooting trips Knox, are we to take a chance nothing goes wrong with our devices?
Rooting is great, use Titanium Backup to freeze and uninstall "bloat", but I keep reading about Knox.
Seen the solution, edit a file only thing the next people in the thread said the solution does not work.
You should still be able to attach the card to your PC copy files ?

Currently have a card in the microSD slot, rooted tab, edited build.prop. I'm able to see both internal and external SD Card locations when plugged in via USB to my PC. I'm also able to read files placed there from within the applications that I use. Things that I've tried include exporting files to the external microSD from one program and deleting them using another, dragging and dropping from my PC to external card and then accessing the files from within various applications on the tablet.

Hello All,
Since kitkat 4.4.2 was released on the Galaxy Note 3, many users were unable to write files to the External SD Card. Below is a simple fix for rooted users on the Galaxy Note 3 N9005 ( International Snapdragon Variant).
**Please be advised that I have only tested this on my personal N9005. However, you are free to test it on your own devices at your own risk!! **
1. Using a root-enabled file manager, navigate to /system/etc/permissions
2. Edit platform.xml and find the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission.
3. Add an additional group definition for this permission...
4. Save the changes to the file.
5. Restart.
Attached is a copy of my platform.xml.

☆☆☆I have tested and can confirm following these directions to the letter on a rooted device, does solve the problem on the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 - SM-P900. I'm now able to write & save to my Sandisk 64gb HS SD card without any problems at all!☆☆☆
Instructions are below in red text. You must be rooted & follow them exactly!
1. Using a root-enabled file manager, navigate to /system/etc/permissions
2. Edit platform.xml and find the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission.
3. Add an additional group definition for this permission...
4. Save the changes to the file.
5. Restart.

Rooting means Knox = 1 why would I want to throw out my warranty on a device I paid $750 for? That is an awful big risk
3. means nothing to people that never done this "Add an additional group definition for this permission", really and how do you do that?
My question is this ( I know what board this is ) but nobody has an issue rooting even if it means no warranty?

I guess with all the Smartphones and Tablets I owned, ask myself how many times did I actually claim Warranty?
Maybe I should just man up, use chainfire and call it a day, but step 3 still seem vague to me, I think the original thread for this fix is on the Note 2 forum and I they have a picture what the file should look like after it has been edited.

I've rooted every device I've owned and I've never had any reason to file a warranty claim on any of them. Before I root I do spend a few days pushing my machine to the limit and attempting to crash it through abnormal use. If it functions as expected, I root. It took me about eight hours before I decided to go ahead and root the 12.2.

If you are so worried about your warranty why not go and buy a Square Trade warranty. Doesn't matter if you root or whatever, they'll still warranty it.
3. If you read use that little search button you be surprised what you can discover.
Your question about rooting has already been asked time and time again, and guess what, there's also a proper forum for that as well.
Seems to me you bought this device because it was new and shiny, lol. Maybe you might want to search a little harder before posting next time.

Well if one is afraid loosing warranty. Do not root or edit. Peronally i nver had to claim warranty so i dont know what will happen if i have to..
But if one does excactly what is described. Nothing will go wrong. If you edit the file with rootexplorer it will make a backup, so if something goes wrong you are always able to restore the original file.
In this post you find what to edit

I just popped in a 32gb Sony SD card, and successfully copied over some files without issue. I have root. I wonder why only some devices are having this issue?
On the decision to root - for me, personally, the device isn't worth the money it cost unless it's rooted. Maybe I'm spoiled, but after not having used a single phone or tablet without it since my OG Droid, I cant imagine not having it. I tend to baby my electronics, often to an excess. That usually only lasts for the first year, though. By that time, I'm already eyeing something new and a lot of warranties are no longer valid. With phones I've always gotten insurance, so I could drop it off a cliff onto a landmine and replace it for 50 bucks.
Having a Riff box is nice as well. I doubt it supports this tablet yet, but it has more than paid for itself by fixing a few bricked phones. I was able to reverse a Knox upgrade on one if my s3's. According to this, even with Jtag it is impossible to reverse the warranty bit. Bummer. I'd still recommend one to anyone who runs the risk of bricking something on a near daily basis.
I will add, though, that I encountered something new while trying to perform an adb backup today. When I tried to "adb root" it says "adb cannot run as root in production devices." I can use su inside an adb shell, though.

new apk
There's a new apk from tliebeck fixing the sd card issue.
I tried it on my S4 I337M and will try it on my N900 tonigh. You can take a look to this apk here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51178053
You need a rooted device and don't forget to reboot after.

I have not rooted and have a note pro 12.2 Wi-Fi-only 64gb model and do NOT have any issues with writing to or deleting from an external sd card (fat32 64gb U1 official Samsung card)
I'm curious as to why I am not having this problem while others are...
my firmware is NAE

Depends on what you're using to write or delete.
For example, try with file managers.
Using the built in My Files, I can write and delete files on the SD card no problem- the app must have read/write permission.
Now install a file manager like X-plore. (personally, my favorite)
Trying to write or delete files on SD fails- it has no access. I've noticed other third party apps are the same.
I'm curious what apps you've using to write/delete with?
Heck, I've noticed even Hancom Office will only save files to its own designated area of the SD card, not just anywhere I want to save.
The other day I was infuriated when I was marking up a PDF using Repligo Reader (file off SD card) and the app failed when trying to save. (I'd forgotten about this when it happened.) Worse, there was no save as and choose a writable location- I just lost what I'd done.
Anyway, I know I can just root and fix this, I just haven't felt like rooting my brand new $750 Note 12.2 yet. I know some people root expensive devices more often than they change underwear, but not all of us do. I'll probably do it, but mainly it just annoys me that Google thinks this insanity is a good idea in the first place. They're getting more and more like Apple- our way or the highway, let's force the user into what we want' nonsense these days.

[GUIDE] Installing Dexter's Froyo - Video Tutorial

Okay folks,
As promised, I have taken the time to create a video outlining the steps to installing Dexter's froyo on the Milestone XT720.
Obviously, I can only post 15 minutes max onto youtube, so there are a few cuts in the video that might make certain steps seem quicker than they actually are.
BE PATIENT!!! Things take time to load. Don't rush things, and when in doubt... reboot the phone.
I'm sure that there will be questions, comments, complaints, and criticisms. Post them here, and I will address them if I can.
Link to the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvU1CptOe14
Just an FYI: If you are not comfortable doing this...then DON'T. I am not responsible if you brick your phone or lose any of your data. Please pay attention to the fact that wiping/clearing/resetting data literally means that it will ALL BE GONE and not able to be retrieved.
awesome video...keep up the good work!

A few people have pointed that out now. Thanks!
thanks for a great tutorial!
Many thanks for taking the time to make this video. I have done the ROM installing process before (on my previous phone) but I always feel worried that I'm going to do something wrong and mess up things. I'm not putting Dexter's ROM on just yet (I just got my XT720 and want to make sure everything is working before voiding warranty) but this makes me feel safer about putting it on when I do.
Thanks for your work.
Very precise .. to the point .. tutorial.. good work reverend...!
Thanks....
Great Work
Superb video Rev,
it puts alot of us at ease, esp us that know sweet f.a. about this but follow these sites with interest in doing this kinda stuff.
I would like to ask you if there is anything else planned in the pipeline because I feel safer being able to visualise it as apposed to following instruction in text.
Your voice, details and mannerisms are perfect. MANY MANY THANKS
Issues I have is this (as newb):
I have a motoroi xt720. i wish to add the latest dexters 2.2 to it and all the bug updates, (confused about this sdtoapp, partitions etc stuff and what to do with my sd card)
also the overclocking , can it be left alone or does the latest dexters allow you to set/change it.
or shall i wait for v1,4 that will include all the latest bugfixes
life is never easy but this has to be easier than being married to a woman

Thanks, I appreciate the comments.
As far as what is coming down the pipeline, I may have to make a revised video that includes the common questions that I have been asked over the last few months. Most people are still a bit confused as to how to run patches, how to apply themes, how to move the cache and many little nitpicky things. I can appreciate the apprehensiveness people have about doing this. You spend a bit of money on a "nice" phone, and the last thing you want to do it trash it with your own ignorance! I have "bricked" this phone several times, and have had to flash it back to stock, which is why I have done a video on how to get back to a fresh stock rom and start over. The ability to try it again should give people a bit more freedom to experiment and attempt some of the steps outlined in this forum. My own personal record, so far, is 14 flashes in one day. FACEPALM.
If the developers pump out another significant release, you will see me make another video explaining how to apply it and I'll take that opportunity to address some other questions as well. In the meantime, I encourage you to watch ALL of the videos that I have uploaded on my Youtube channel to see if they might shed some additional light on how to proceed with modifying your phone.
Happy Flashing!
My own personal record, so far, is 14 flashes in one day. FACEPALM.

When I made my videos, I filmed them all on the same day, so I had to keep going through the process over and over again. I would get half way through a video and something would interrupt me and I would have to start over. During one take of a video, right after a flash, my phone rang, and it was a wrong number!
I keep waiting for the phone to prompt me that I have hit my maximum number of flashes.

Okies let try to put this down covering all my worries and concerns
Lets take my motoroi xt720 flashed with 2.1 UK stock
SD card 8gb just in phone as bundled with when it came and ready to go
Follow the Rev's video tutorial on how to partition with Linux, all software loaded and ready to go
Q1 ? what would be a good size partition to make on the fat and ext3 for an 8gb?
Q2 ? Do we need to partition the SD card or can it be left as a 8gb card. I wish to put the update file on after , so I'm reading I need the partitions ?
Once this is done I take it we unzip v1.3 and load on Dexters 2.2 FROYO on the SD card. ? If so in which partition ?
Follow the superb video by the Rev to put on 1.3
Then check phone and hey presto its 2.2
Then we come to the upgrade bug zip file,
Where is it loaded on too, how do we safely add it ?
Overclocking can we leave as stock or do we adjust it with OC app.
apps to sd, link2sd , which one is easiest, do we only need to use one. ??
as a newb with limited tech knowledge, thats where I am with this.
so desperate to go to the races

OKay.
First of all, your partitions should be:
-1 gb or less for ext2/ext3
-The rest as FAT32.
I personally always do just under 1gb as ext3, and the rest FAT32. Then, I create the directories "app" and "dalvik-cache" on the ext3 partition. Unzip all your files to the FAT32 partition. Do NOT put anything on the ext3 other than those two empty partitions.
Once you've rooted and loaded 2.2, go back to your card and stick the file "whatever update you're loading.zip" into the openrecovery/updates directory of your FAT32, and then run OpenRecovery and choose that file to load. Be sure to clear out the cache and wipe dalvik while you're in there too.
After rebooting, this will make the dalvik-cache active on your ext3 partition, and your apps should be in there too. Link2sd is totally different and I havent found any personal value to it myself, but feel free to experiment. You would have to learn how that works and how to adjust your partition to accomodate it. I'm content with using the app2sd that is done by default just by creating the "app" directory on my ext3.
Overclock? That's up to you. I do. I keep mine at 1000mhz all of the time. I also use SetCPU and SD Speed Boost. This seems to give my phone the "zippiness" I desire without killing my battery too quickly. I have a charger next to my bed and I plug it in every night and unplug it every morning. This works for me.
Gparted not working as I think it should
Stuck with GParted Rev,
I have a 8GB card that shows as vfat7.4 in Puppy
It shows mnt/sdc1 and all my folders from my exsisting software is on there.
When I open up Gparted
dev/sda it shows as 1021.mb but i cannot get it to show sdab as in your tutorial.
the size of dev/sda shows 1021.Mib ?
anyone throw some light on this ?
i was thinking it would show near on 8gb ?
or am i being like the mrs (blonde)
thanks
Whatever gparted shows as currently on the card, delete that. Then you can create new partitions. Also, make sure you are looking at the card and not the harddrive!
Got the card now gparted. semed to have an issue using the built in card reader on my laptop. When using a seperatre plug in card reader, it found it .
Thanks for your time so far Rev...

2. SUT LR 1.8.2 (Doesn't seem to be working on 64-bit systems)
3. FXX_PR3_NV.xml and NvDefinition.xml [ATTACHED]
Before Rooting:
Prepare your phone by doing the following:
- Go to Settings > Applications > CHECK "Unknown Sources"

- Connect your phone via USB, when prompted DO NOT select USB Mass Storage.
- Extract FXX_PR3_NV.xml and NvDefinition.xml from the attached zip file in to a folder
- Now, install SUT LR, run the app
- Select the FXX_PR3_NV.xml [ensure NvDefinition.xml is also in the same folder as FXX_PR3_NV.xml]

This is a major issue. No one seems to know much about this phone and there are no posts about it as well.
Folks who has this phone, I am curious is Google Talk Audio & Video Chat works on it or is it possible to install it. Please let me know. Also, does the Video Call work properly? & Does it come with a microSD Card?
It comes with Google Talk, but I don't think its for audio/video. For audio/video it comes with Qik Video Software. Also it comes with 2 GB of Micro SD card. But its internal storage is very less, just mere 150 MB, I just installed few software, and its full. Even moving Apps2SD card won't help, as the software setup are backed on internal storage.

Well, I think for the features this phone is offering there would be limitations somewhere. I am going to buy this phone for my mom so that we can Video Chat. I could not find any other Android based phone at this range that offers these features. So I think we might aswell just compensate for the storage. However, I was really looking forward to having the Voice & Video chat on GTalk itself...
How is the phone otherwise? How much did you get it for? Is the battery life as good as it is promised? & let me dig around and find a way to root it... I do not like the default junk that comes along with it. Unfortunately, the devs are more busy with highend phones :-D
A fully charged battery went completely discharged overnight. I don't know what happened. Only Wifi was on, but there was no Wifi available.
Also the charger is complete junk, charging by plugging it in a computer charges much faster.

Oooo.. that's bad.. Check what has been using the battery... Or change the WiFi sleep property.. That should help.

Yes, the internal memory is way too less. I am trying on ways to use SD Cards for storing apps by making it an EXT4 and other modification but no luck so far.

Poistive - Looks
Negative - Low memory. Slow UI. I upgraded from Galaxy 5 but seems like should have gone to a much higher end phone.
Anyways if I can get that extra memory, I may be content.

Yups, if Wifi would be ON and there would be no Wifi available, it will consume more battery as it will keep on searching for networks to connect.
Someone needs to root this and port the gmail with voice & video on to it.. I am sure this device is perfectly capable of supporting it.
If it could work on my Xperia X10 which does not have a front cam.. I am sure it would on this.
Lets see. I have started digging into things with 2 priorities.
First and foremost being rooting it.

Moto Fire XT530 Rooting
Hello folks,
There's a One click root for Motorola 2.3.4 Gingerbread devices, if that doesn't work you might have to wait to for a developer to start working on the phone as it was just released like a month ago.
Give this method a try and post updates.
More info HERE

Sign Petition: KitKat BREAKS MICROSD FUNCTIONALITY

Evidently KitKat does not allow third party apps to move, copy or manipulate files anywhere on the microsd card unless those files are in a subdirectory path that matches the name of the application trying to manipulate the files. This means many file explorers and other such apps are completely broken. Please sign this petition to help encourage Google to change their ways with this decision:

The only way to totally get around it without rooting is to connect your phone to a PC with your phone as an MTP Media device. Then from your PC you can move stuff from internal to external memory etc. It's just a leeeetle slooooooow. (ARGH!÷÷/% €€£¥&^\○|□□>♤♡)

Or you could update your apps...
App developers just have to update the permissions of their apps and they work fine.
For instance, ES File Explorer can move, cut, paste, rename and delete things just fine. And no, I'm not rooted.

Aren't such apps using a rather flaky loophole to do this which Google will surely close in due course? I can't remember where I read it but if an app is doing anything more than creating its own app specific individual folder on the SD card and writing to that, it's using a workaround that wasn't intended.
Personally I'm ready for a change from Android now. The rot really started when Google forced people to sign up to G+ to leave reviews in the Play Store and it has gradually got worse from there. I seem to recall a certain company called Microsoft got into all sorts of trouble for bundling their own web browser on PCs, but now Google seems to be forcing all sorts of restrictions and conditions on people (wanna use the Play Store fully? You need a G+ account). Daft changes to the GUI that put frequently used items on large screened devices out of reach for single handed use, the demise of the menu button, changes to core apps that either remove functionality or put it further out of reach (e.g Maps) and now KitKat's war on SD cards really make me wish I had kept my old HD2. I would honestly rather go back to Windows Mobile 6.5 with HTC Sense, Co0kie's Home Tab, Task Façade, TomTom GB and a few other apps at the moment. Sorry, rant over, my blood sugar level must be low

Well you also have to remember that google wants to do away with SD cards for android devices all together. Then even removed the coding from the base OS so now OEM have to re-add it for devices with them.

Yes, from my point of view that is real a shame. Of course, if OEMs started releasing 128GB devices at a sensible price and using the cloud became reliable for people like me who like to venture outside of urban areas where network coverage is good, I wouldn't care about micro SD cards or USB OTG. I still like Android, but hopefully Ubuntu Touch will provide an alternative, or maybe Microsoft will keep adding features to Windows Phone (though after the way they dumped 6.5 for 7, then dumped 7 for 8 with a 'fresh' start each time I'm reluctant to give them another chance). If Apple launched a sensibly priced device with a 5" screen I would give that a go too now. Who knows, perhaps I'll go back to having an iPod Classic and a feature phone. Back when I had an HTC Elf my hopes for the future of owning an all in one device that had all my music stored locally, provided sat nav, gaming, web browsing and PC functinality when docked were high, but all these years later we're still not quite where i'd like to be. I accept that I'm in the minority here and most people are probably happy though

That is strange. Because of knox my galaxy note pro is not rooted and on an external sd card Es File Explorer can’t rename a file. "Cut and paste" is not really "cut and paste" (I mean it doesn’t work as it usually do when source and destination are on the same drive/sd card. Just rewriting the path of the file without moving the datas) but "Copy to destination then delete source" so it takes a very long time to move a big file from a directory to another.
What I understand is that even if developers update their apps with the last api problems will not be fixed. Files Explorer will use turn around where they can and edition apps will not be able to edit files out of their directories etc.

I've also noticed renaming doesn't work.
Not on a 3rd party app nor on stock.
And I also can't rename anything over MTP through my pc, either. It just crashes explorer.exe and disconnects. A different computer, cable and OS don't make any difference. But then MTP has been a nightmare from day 1.
Then that's some corruption

Connect to a computer is not confortable and Es File Explorer is a better tool than the samsung built in file explorer, less options and unable to rename a file extension (I don't think I missed an option).
android 4.4 kitkat is so restrictive that it looks like a trial version, lot of pain in many cases. The prize to pay to have the fully operational version and have the right to use the tools you need is to root, increment knox and void warranty. This is very bad from google and samsung.
Sorry for my poor English.

Its not that simple . Phones and computers actually fall under different categories for some laws. But the take away is that Google isn't forcing you to use the Play Store. Its their own software and they can require you to do whatever they legally want in order to preserve that eco system. They could easily prove in court that not having people sign in with "real" information lead to good and bad reviews being bought and sold. You also have the option of installing apps from unknown sources, so your not locked in. I don't necessarily agree with the ruling to fine Microsoft over the whole IE thing, sounds like people *****ing to me . Use IE to download Firefox or whatever and get over it. Companies aren't supposed to be fined for Anti-Trust over not helping their competition, just from intentionally locking their competitors out of markets, specially with dirty or illegal tricks. See: Intel.

Ohhh, all of the above said, I understand the need for limiting apps from modifying things on an SD card, as long as it prevents malicious code from doing malicious things and allows legitimate apps to function. I'll be following this as it develops :|
hmm, this sounds like something apple would do!

You can, because you have root. You cannot edit files on your SD Card only if:
1) You don't have root.
2) You're using a file explorer that does not has the workaround implemented in it.

I find the "feature" very annoying, especially for local backups of contacts, messages. Holding fingers crossed that CM1x fixes this obstruction from Google.

Saving to external SD card

When I first got my NotePro 12.2 I was able to use EXFile Explorer to move files from the internal SD to the external SD card. Now when I attempt to copy files I get an error telling me ExFile Explorer does not have permission to save to the external SD card. The Native "My Files" program copies files just fine. So I know it is possible. I have the same problem with Aqua-mail. I would like to set up a directory on my external SD card to download email attachments. This works fine on my other devices but not on the NotePro. I get the error saying it does not have permission.
Is there a way to change permissions to allow writing to the SD Card?
Sent from my SM-P900 using Tapatalk
Sorry, a recent system update killed that feature. Google thinks it is a security problem to have apps write to the external card. However, many posts here say it can be done if rooted but I'm not confident enough to try that. (yet)

Unfortunately I have not yet rooted my NotePro. I use it a lot for work and travel and was trying to keep it stock. When I rooted my previous tablet (Xoom) it left me unable to use some of the movie apps. Not sure if that is a problem with the NotePro but entertainment while traveling is one of my big uses for the tablet.

So basically they made having an external SD card useless? I hate it when companies cripple a device because they think they have to "protect" me. I would think being able to encrypt the SD card would provide me a means to protect myself and that should be good enough. Just this sort of thing is why I moved away from Apple products.

Have you updated the app?
I'm assuming you mean ES File Explorer. It received an update to allow access to the MicroSD months ago. It works fine on mine.
And no, they haven't made it useless. The MicroSD was always meant to store media. In other words, store your films, music, books and other such heavy files. Not to store system data. You don't need to write a film to the MicroSD to watch it. And viewing the file wasn't restricted in the update.
Also, remember that Google never build MicroSD support into Android.

While you can save stuff to the external card with ES Explorer, you can't rename any file there. You will have to use the stock file explorer to do that.

Yes, I have the latest ES File Explorer app. The way I use my tablet I get a lot of emails with files attached. Some can be large. I like to keep them on the microSD card so that I can manage things better. Not being able to save email attachments or even move them to the microSD makes it pretty useless. Yes, I can use the native app "MyFiles" but I prefer ESFile Explorer. It just irritates me that they pick and choose which apps they will allow me to use. The microSD slot is one of the reasons I bought this device.

You could make a tasker profile to automatically move files from the download directory to a directory on the MicroSD.
I'm a bit confused as to why ES doesn't allow you to copy or move to the MicroSD. I just tried ES on mine and it works... The only thing that doesn't work is renaming them.

It's certainly possible.
It might also be related to the fact that we're using different hardware. (Mine's the LTE edition).

I've been holding off rooting it as well. My concern is the affect that it may have on screen mirroring (someone said that they can't get it to work while others have said that they don't have problems with it) Sorry I can't answer your questions in regards to playing movies. If and when I do I will use Civz P900 rom. I've used his roms on my note 8.0 and my daughter's acer iconia 500. His roms are excellent with excellent support.

I don't really want to install a custom rom, I just want to root it to gain some functionality. I just want to be sure I don't lose functionality as well.

I don't use screen mirroring so I can't speak to that but rooting will not affect movie playing.
From the looks of it, it affects mostly the P900. Interestingly I've been reading identical issues with the Note 3 that also mainly affects the N900 with the same hardware as the P900. The N9005 has the same hardware as the P905 and has no issues.
Seems like it's indeed hardware-related.

Makes since, but seems rathater silly of Samsung. I actually have a 8 inch note with 4g (Note 3 I think?) And saving to the microSD card works fine on it. That's why I thought maybe there was something wrong with my NotePro.
I guess I could try rooting and if anything is adversely affected I can unroot back to stock.

Anybody using Dropsync with 5.0.x?

The app developer hasn't updated it for Lollipop's new folder hierarchy permission, and he seems to be pointing everyone who asks about it to his Kitkat workaround (https://metactrl.com/docs/sdcard-on-kitkat/). I tried to create the necessary directory via ES File Explorer, but it couldn't create it. Consequently, Dropsync has become completely useless for me. Does anybody use it and have advice? I might be willing to root it if it solves the problem entirely... I hadn't had a reason to root prior. Lollipop penetration is so low that I can't find information on it anywhere else, hence why I'm hoping someone with a Shield has figured it out.
Unfortunately the only apps I've seen accessing the file system properly are the ones that have the special lollipop hack that it looks like was begrudgingly added at the last second.
That much being said, it is ENTIRELY possible that if you are not able to write to your SD card, it is because the SD card is not properly formatted. I recently posted an article somewhere in this forum about how I reformatted my SD card and got apps to write to it and everything was peachy keen.

Disclaimer: I really hope this works for you but given my Thanks it's only been called functional by one other person besides me.
I actually did try formatting as NTFS (after seeing your post) and it was unsuccessful. However, I did quick format and I see now that your post says to format it twice. Perhaps I'll try it again this evening.
Thanks for your input, either way!
Any reason why not to root? DS works fine for me on 2.1 and starkissed kernel

I'm sorry to hear that. I probably formatted my SD card a couple times too.

Because warranty. Because good old days of not needing root.
Regarding root, I simply haven't had a need to with the Shield. With my phones and older tablets, there is functionality that I could only gain through root. But with the Shield, it's not like I'm removing carrier bloat, tethering behind the carrier's back, etc. I'm not necessarily worried about the warranty aspect... I do have microscopic hairline fractures on the corners, but I'm not petty enough to submit for a warranty exchange for cosmetic blemishes that don't affect performance, and I don't foresee other warranty-worthy issues.
Would root allow me to completely resolve the issue, though? As I mentioned, the developer's write-up specifically covers fixing the issue on KitKat, not Lollipop.

OFF TOPIC but, what is the starkissed kernel? I searched the shield tablet forum for that keyword and this was the only mention it found....
PSA: If you encounter a problem where an app asks for write permissions for the sd card, but selecting it in the documents menu that pops up causes it to crash, format the drive as NTFS and assign a volume label. I had formatted as NTFS but not assigned a volume label and had this issue... once I assigned a label, it was remedied.
And the dropsync developer is updating the app to support these permissions very soon.
