[Q] Chase Bank mobile app issues? - Verizon HTC One (M8)

After rooting my device, unlocking the bootloader, and doing s-off, the Chase mobile app wouldn't let me use QuickDeposit. Whenever I clicked on "Take Picture," it'd send me back to the home screen of the app. I downloaded the RootCloak module thinking it was probably an issue with the Chase app not working properly on rooted devices, but that didn't do anything.
I decided to unroot my phone and lock my bootloader to see if that'd work, and well, now it works. If it works now, is there a reason the RootCloak module didn't do anything? Did the locked bootloader have anything to do with it possibly (something that maybe RootCloak can't hide to apps?).
Has anyone else had the same issue on their rooted device, and is there a solution to making QuickDeposit work on a rooted phone that I don't know about?

Hmmm...interesting....My Check/Mobile Deposit for PNC works on my M8 (S-Off, Unlocked and Rooted)....but I can certainly see a banking app running those checks to ensure the phone is secured as possible in order for it to be allowed to perform banking tasks.
Unfortunately I can't assist as I do not bank with Chase to verify the issue you are having.

I have Chase. It has to be something other than root/unlock/S-Off... or if it is because of that, it is specific to the M8.
I have had Chase with a rooted HTC Evo (S-off), Thunderbolt (S-Off), Razr Maxx (rooted only), Razr Maxx HD (and the HD got unlocked before I switched phones), Droid DNA (S-off I believe, definitely rooted), Galaxy S4 (rooted and unlocked, then just rooted when my original phone died and was stuck with a new phone with a locked boot loader), and currently using a Note 3 (rooted) and I have no issues doing a quick deposit (The Galaxy line had a bug but has since been fixed, unrelated to root). The M8 I had (and is now on the second line of my account) is rooted but I am unsure if a check deposit has been attempted on it.
So I am 100% sure it is not because of the root/unlock/S-Off, BUT, it might be something to do with a new check that HTC does. Sorry I cannot be more helpful.

Hmm interesting. Would there be any way you could try it on the M8 that's on the second line of your account? You don't even have to have a check to deposit, you just have to click the "Take Picture" button on the QuickDeposit screen and see what happens. I'm going to try re-rooting my phone in a little bit to see if maybe it'll work this time.

And when you re-root it stops working again??

On a side note, does anyone know how to unlock the bootloader again? I locked it to test all this out, when I go back to try to unlock the bootloader, the firewater script says "there isn't a helluva lot to do here" since I'm already S-Off. If I recall correctly, the firewater script was to do S-Off and to unlock the bootloader, correct?

I'm using the WeakSauce temporary root for now, and it's still working. However, I'm still on a locked bootloader (I'm trying to figure out how to unlock it again since firewater says there's nothing to do). Once I get the unlocked bootloader back, I'm going to do a permanent root and try the Chase app again. If only I could figure out how to unlock the bootloader...

Step 13 of this link (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708628) states this:
"When completely successfully, you now have S-OFF. Your phone's bootloader is also unlocked in the process; you do NOT need to perform any additional steps to unlock the bootloader. However, you do not have permanent root. The root that weaksuace provides goes away on reboot and must be reapplied again on startup."
Not sure if that helps or not.

The problem is that I've already used the firewater script in the past to unlock my bootloader and to get S-OFF. But, I had to relock my bootloader earlier today as part of my process to try to fix my Chase app issue. My phone is still S-OFF but has a locked bootloader now, so when I try to run the firewater script again, it sees that my phone is S-OFF already and says there's nothing more to do, leaving me with my bootloader still locked. I used a command prompt earlier to lock my bootloader, but can't find the command script that'll unlock it again.

I have an m7 and ever since updating the app I don't have quick deposit working either. So I think it's a problem with the app not the phone.

Thanks for all the help guys. I figured out what the issue was. The SwipeBack module was the culprit. I uninstalled it and now it's working.

[Q] 4.3 Root, out of ideas

Alright, I just started trying to root my galaxy s3 a little while ago. I searched how to root it, and I got a video where I needed to unlock the bootloader. I tried unlocking it using the video's method, not realizing it was horribly out of date. So, the bootloader has been patched for that, I decided to try saferoot, and the kernel is patched for that. It recommended I use another method of rooting, but I don't know of any.
What should I try?

A friend of mine is looking to me to root his Verizon S3 and I just wanted to double check that the towelroot method has worked for it and is actually just as easy as downloading the apk and then running it? I'm sorry if I appear stupid but it has never been that simple on my HTC's lol. Thanks for your time.

It worked for a day or so then said it didn't have root, he rebooted and ran towelroot again and appeared to root again. Problem I'm wondering about is the message I get when I open superuser: "Samsung Knox has been detected. This might limit root capabilities and cause pop ups. Try to disable Knox?"

I don't know if that has anything to do with it. The first time I rooted for the long term (with saferoot on ML1) I BELIEVE that I disabled it and it was all good. I have been temporarily rooted and not disabled it and still not run into problems though

[Q] Recently Locked Bootloader, S-ON & Unrooted TAMPERED FLAG

So, I needed to return my phone back to stock recently (yes, HTC ONE M8 VERIZON).
Followed the directions posted here and all went perfect. Did have to purchase the "Universal Unroot" app to get SuperSU to uninstall.
About 20 minutes later, I get a notification stating there was an update from Verizon for OTA. I follow the onscreen prompts (figured, what does it matter, phone is stock again) after the install, I get a prompt stating the phone has been tampered (or something to that affect), so I load the bootloader and I see the *** TAMPERED *** flag on the top.
Is there anyway to get that removed now that I am no longer rooted, on S-OFF and my bootloader is locked again... Before turning the phone back in to Verizon?
Did you take a nandroid backup after rooting? If so just flash that. As for the ota, they are more trouble than they are worth most of the time. You can just grab the radio and firmware from it, posted in the development area, then flash nusense6 custom Rom to get 4.4.3. It's mostly stock.

I believe the only option for you now would be to use Sunshine to achieve s-off again and then reset your flag. That will cost $25 unless someone has anything else I haven't been able to find.

thanks for the tip, there may be a light at the end of the tunnel, tomorrow I may be all good.
I can tell you 100% for sure that Sunshine does work with stock Verizon 4.4.3. They updated their thread with that information. You'll probably have to pay the 25$ (if you haven't already paid it before) but it is seriously the easiest S-OFF exploit there is. You just install the apk, open it, you get a prompt for payment either paypal or credit card, then it runs compatibility tests and then S-OFFs. You literally have to do nothing but install the apk. You don't even need root to use it. It does it all itself. After you run Sunshine, fastboot flash the latest TWRP, then flash SuperSU zip for root. (you can get that here: http://download.chainfire.eu/420/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99.zip ) and your are good to go. Resetting the tampered flag may be difficult though. I'm sure someone has done it somewhere though.

alright, so jcase just worked his magic on my phone...

i followed the instructions here once jcase got me all sorted out with the above...
what i see becoming an issue is, I am on verizon software version 2.21.605.2...
all I want to do is get my phone to a state where I can return it to verizon from here...
I have read the 2 major write ups I have found on returning a phone to stock but, they are all for previous versions of verizon software...
anyone have any ideas/links to give a brother a hand?

Well they will work. You could use the RUU and return to 1.55.605.2. Doesn't matter what version you are on now, it will work. It will put you at almost 100% stock. Just re-lock the bootloader with a command and you can send it back.

phone is no longer rooted

So i got the notif to update to the latest OTA today and when i tried to i got an error....
i checked superSU and it said that my phone was no longer rooted... and now when i try to do over the rooting process, i.e unlock the bootloader and root... its not working, im using the oneplus one toolbox version 3, i had originally used 2....
when i click unlock bootloader, all the phone does is reboot... which is strange seeing as i know it basicall factory resets the phone after unlocking... anyone have this problem? need help
If you were rooted before, you don't need to re-unlock your bootloader as its already unlocked.
Just go into recovery and flash SuperSU.
Stop using toolkits. Its pretty obvious that you aren't aware of what you're doing and you're just pressing buttons hoping stuff will work.

If you were already previously rooted, your phone doesn't magically relock its bootloader. The only way for that to happen is if you manually relocked the bootloader which is bad practice if you're relocking your bootloader when its already unlocked. It serves no purpose to relock your bootloader if you did relock it, just leave it unlocked.
You don't have to go through the whole rooting process if your bootloader was already unlocked. All you had to do was flash SuperSU in recovery to reobtain root.
And don't use toolkits, you honestly don't learn anything at all but to click a button and hope it works. Because there is a chance that it will not work and then consequences will be set in place and then you'll have to rely on users who manually input commands on their phone via fastboot because you're not sure how to do it.

Question about Sunshine

I just got an HTC One M8 today and I want to get it to s off and install CyanogenMod. I'm on the 4.4.4 build and I have root with Sunshine but when I grant it root and it does the compatibility check it says "At this time, SunShine cannot work on your phone"
Is there a fix for this or do I have to wait for Sunshine 3?

I would give it a couple more tries. When I did mine it took me like 3 tries as it kept failing. I had to reboot and run it again. Are you running sunshine while you have root access with weaksauce2 ? I think you need to be and open weaksauce2 to make sure it shows you have root access. And if it reboots then does nothing for a whiles try opening weaksauce2 and see if that lets it work. I would say give it a couple more tries it cant hurt but may help.

It worked for me, current Sunshine...
I have M8 that came with 4.4.4 ... After days of research I finally just tried WeakSauce2 (It worked, gained temp root) ... Make sure you are using WeakSauce2 and not the original.
Then reluctantly, I tried Sunshine and it said it wouldn't work, as you stated. But I tried anyway. ... And it worked FIRST TRY.
I hate the fact that they charge (and charge so much) for it, but it was one of those I'm determined type things... I really hope the that trend of charging so much doesn't catch on. I'm all for donate or a couple of bucks but dammnnn come on... It's supposed to be for fun and everything, not to make thousands of dollars...
Anyways, the current sunshine worked for me, on 4.4.4 , and yes I am sure It was 4.4.4 KitKat and not 4.4.3 ....
Good luck.
My M8 is coming Friday. Do I go straight to Sunshine or do I need to Weaksauce2 first. I thought Weaksauce was now part of sunshine.
Thanks.

Like I said, I first only used WeakSauce2. I rebooted the phone several times just playing with the phone and re-ran weaksauce2 several times also (just playing, testing root, etc... ) - Days later I finally decided to just try Sunshine one night. I left Weaksuace2 running, ran Sunshine, and it worked.
I don't know if it is 'baked in' or not, but this was my experience.

My M8 is coming Friday. Do I go straight to Sunshine or do I need to Weaksauce2 first. I thought Weaksauce was now part of sunshine.
Thanks.

Running weaksauce isn't needed. I'd try sunshine first as soon as you boot up your phone, if it doesn't work weaksauce may allow it to work after running it.
No Joy
Phone came with 4.4.4. Tried Sunshine. Failed. Weaksauce2 gives TempRoot. Weaksauce2 plus Sunshine fails. Manually installed SU. Kept screwing around and ran Flashify to TWRP. Phone booted to a scary red triangle. After awhile booted normally. Decided to start over and did a factory reset.
Did learn I didn't need a SIM Cutter or a trip to Verizon for a Nano SIM. It came with a VZW SIM and VZW has an online app to activate a replacement phone. Enter MEI, SIM ID, they text a code, you enter it, BAM, your done.
Not sure where to go from here. I'd pay way more than $25 for root. Really surprised this phone came from Amazon with 4.4.4. Always been able to get root before locked out. Missing my rooted S3 already other than it was old and slow..
All I really want is TiBu and Tether. Can I do that with just Weaksauce2 TempRoot? Does Freezing "Updater" block further updates so I can deny them until safe?
Thanks

I'm talking out of my @SS right now, but can you Unmount filesystem and then Remount as Read-Write while you have temp root, and then try Sunshine ? Im not sure that would make any difference at all, but If I was stuck I would try at least ...
Could you also use a Firewall and program like Autostarts to block and disable updater as well as disable it ? Again, I don't know, just saying...

Freezing updater would probably stop further updates, but you may want to take it if the next version of sunshine will work on it.
You just need to wait for the next version of sunshine to come out. Jcase and beaups want to wait for the lollipop release so the next version of sunshine will work on it. You did about all you could do for now, so you just have to wait for the update.

No. With s-on write protection is enabled on /system. Any changes you make will revert on reboot.

[Q] Can't take off supersu and re-lock.

Yup, I know total newb question. I decided to unroot my phone a while back because honestly I knew I wasn't going to have time to mess around with the phone like I have in the past. I unrooted it and thought I did everthing right. Root checker says it's not rooted. However my phone has since messed up and broken and HTC is going to help me out under warranty and send me a refurbished one.
The phone is urooted but says it's unlocked and Supersu will not uninstall. When I turn it on using Power and volume down it says it's MODIFIED. I've since deleted everthing that helped me root the phone through the mack, all the files, etc.
Any help on how to get this back to normal? I've heard in a few places that they don't particularly care but I didn't want them to charge me once they receive the item.
Thanks for the help.

Are you s-on?
I am, I remember I used this video but it did not lock and the supersu never uninstalled.
I'm trying to use these steps but it doesn't work, even though it finds my device:

The best you can do then for now is to fastboot oem lock
And then run an s-on ruu that is the same or higher than what you have.
Will I be able to take off the supersu app at some point during this process? It will not uninstall

Just do the zip method. I have them all posted in one thread.
Here:

Nice, thanks! I'm running the fast boot oem right now, I'll let you know how it goes.
Hmm, I put the zip file and it says it can't open it...
Success, I wish it didn't say relocked but it no longer says modified, it states official on the banner.

If the ruu wasn't lollipop and you paid for sunshine in the past you could do sunshine again and fix it
It was on lollipop and I didn't have the sunshine app.
is there any other way to fix that? What's the general consensus, will HTC void the warranty?

Locked is locked. Whether relocked or locked. You cannot fix that without being s-off. If you are still on kitkat you could pay $25 via sunshine to s-off and fix it to say locked and then turn s back on.
Well I'm going to send the phone out and see what happens. Thanks for your help in this thread.
