I'm having trouble copying files (primarily music) to my sdcard. Either entire folders that are copied will show as empty, or only some of the files will copy. I also routinely get the message "your device might not be able to play this file", which I'm assuming is due to the fact that most of my music is in flac (does HTC assume most players don't know what to do with flac?).
Anybody else experiencing these bugs?
That's because kit kat doesn't support it. You have to use the xposed app "handle external storage" to be able to move stuff to your SD card

Thanks for the info. I'm still learning my way around KitKat (and Xposed).
Ok... after doing some more research (and playing with xposed and other things), the issue is not resolved. I've already edited the platform.xml file to enable writing to the sdcard, but it doesn't help with transferring files from pc to the device via usb. Additionally, files that I did successfully write to the sdcard do not appear in Root Explorer, even though r/w is enabled, and various other apps (players) can identify the files. Either I'm missing something obvious, or KitKat is really screwy. I'm starting to miss Jelly Bean on my old Rezound.
Or just use this and reboot once you use it.

Thanks, but I've already tried that. It only implements the same changes as manually editing platform.xml. Once that's been done, NextApp will display this message:

It works perfect for me. I go into app settings and moved Google Music and everything else I could to the SD card.

I think you're misunderstanding what my problem is. I'm trying to move music files from my PC to my SDCARD. Not data from apps to the sdcard.

Stock player, Poweramp, Neutron player all will show something different for available files in the specified folders. Root Explorer won't show files that I put in a folder labeled "Audio Books", even though I drag-and-drop the files there using my PC, and the PC shows they're there. I put four audio books on my sdcard in the last coupled days (in mp3), and the files are all missing. Now, plugging it in to my PC, the files are nowhere to be found. They were there (at least some of them) a day ago. WTH?? The folder is there, but it's empty. So empty I can hear an echo in there...

So I downloaded the 4,2,1 blob from the Asus site. Before flashing I made my backup with TWRP recovery, and titanium backup to backup all my data.
I booted into fastboot, pushed the blob via flash system command. Rebooted, everything upgraded like normal. Rebooted into fastboot, flashed new TWRP for 4.2, and went through the process of re-rooting. All is fine and dandy except I lost my data. The card says 10GB is used, but I can only see the new file structure. It's like the data is there, but I just can't see it.
Here is a picture of what I am talking about.

Hi there, I have exactly the same problem you described, lost a years worth of lecture notes. Windows says there's gigs worth of stuff on there but the contents totals some tiny number of megabytes. Could you please fill me on in on what to do? I am desperate and spent a whole day doing all sorts of stupid things to try to get it back!

You need to be rooted but you will find all your data in /mnt/shell/emulated
From there you can move it back into the 0/ folder which enables it to be reseen by the OS.
This will be a noob question but its really starting to irritate me, where do apps install on kit kat? I cannot find any apps other than system and sys-priv I have checked data/apps and I have checked my internal storage card

Hi guys,

It's the same behaviour on several devices (Laptop, Desktop).
Some folders are listed as folders and browseable, but some folders are listed as files and not browseable.

SDK etc. is installed
Can you help me to solve this issue?
It's no general issue whith my N5.
For example: I'm able to browse the phone as expected when using the app "Web PC Suite".
Thank you for your advice!
It's very common. Not sure there is a permanent fix. Reboot of both computer and phone should be a workaround.

Thanks for your proposed workaround but a restart doesn't solve my issue.
I've restarted my laptop and nexus several times but nothing has changed.
It might be interessting that always the same folders are detected as files.
Does that help?

Even after switching on/off usb debugging the folders are still mixed up as files and folders :crying:
wtf is going on?
In the meantime i got that desperate i totally stocked my Nexus (even with tamper-flag reset etc.) and voila,
folders were displayed as foldern.
Then after restoring my ADB-Backup (which i did right before stocking, of course) files and folders are mixed up again :crying:
Could this be a software issue caused by my nexus?
I'm using yesterdays omnirom-nightly with fraco Kernel R47.
But had this issue with a lot of rom-kernel combinations.
Please help :crying::crying:

I also had the same problem before and dunno why this happens. But it got fixed own it own. LOL
Any ways as temporary solution I used pull function of adb.
Code:
adb pull /sdcard/DCIM /driveonpc

hey, pal.
Thanks a lot that worked for me.
Actualy i tried something easier for the most folders.
I plugged in the Nexus to my Laptop and then renamed every folder which was shown as file to foldername2.
Then the folder was displayed as a folder in windows file explorer.
After renaming the folder to it's actual name it still was a folder and everything worked properly.
So i guess it's just necessary to update the folder. :good:
Just got my Sony Xperia Z3. Still messing around to get a feel of the UI.
Was not able to uninstall File Commander as I find the UI badly design. So installed ASTRO File Manager, tried deleting a file from ext SD card. pops up a notice saying that due to KitKat design, 'write' to ext SD card is prohibited.
I uninstalled ASTRO File Manager and installed SOLID Explorer, deletion from ext SD card was not allowed as well.
Tried deleting same file using File Commander and it worked

Probably will try File Expert but expecting the same rejection.
It is a well known issue with KitKat and is brought in on purpose by google.
Basically in an effort to increase security protection to the user only system apps can write to the SDcard. There is a way around it but you need root. Just google "Write to SD card KitKat" for further information and how to revert it.

You believe in Santa Claus, too ?
Google tries to force you into using their cloud services, that's all magic.
But it's correct: You need root to edit the file platform.xml. After doing that, everything is ok again.
But DO NOT ROOT, yet ! You'll lose all DRM keys (making the horribly bad Z3 camera even worse) and X-Reality. And believe me: You really do not want to lose that.

Yes I know, its an old issue and well known how to get around it. And trust me, if I want to unlock my bootloader I will.
The only way around it is to save files in your File Explorer's App folder. With FX Explorer, for example, save your files into Android/data/nextapp.fx/files/
You'll be able to write and delete all you want.
File Commander works across all folders because it's a system apk.
Presumably with root you could just convert your file manager app of choice to a system app with the likes of Titanium and it would then work ok? Or just use one that uses root anyway (like Root Explorer).
Work root you just add one line to platform.xml and then it works just like it did before

Of course, with root you can get around any software restriction. However, in 2 - 3 years it'll be moot (hopefully sooner). It's like when Android dropped the menu key and everyone was pissed. After 2 years no one cares about the lack of a menu key anymore.
I'm cleaning up my phone, PHOTOS only shows photos stored on the phone, it doesn't include photos on the SD card.
So I downloaded the SD card photos via Airdroid FILES and now want to delete them
If I right click on EXTERNAL SD CARD, I'm given the delete option, but if I dive into any subdirectories, all delete options are greyed out whether it's right click on directory or file, or select and click the trash can.
Any ideas? This is a Note 3 running Android 4.3

If AirDroid doesn't have the permission to delete files on your external sd card, the delete option will be greyed out. Or would you please give it a try on the phone: AirDroid--->Tools--->Files. Try deleting one photo there just to check if AirDroid has the permission. Thank you in advance
I think you're on to something. Using AirDroid on the phone itself, I attempted to delete a file from the SD card. The delete option was there, it said the delete was successful, but nothing was actually deleted.
What might prevent this from working?
