[Q] GS4 Randomly Shuts Off ; Apps and Screen Glitch Out - General Questions and Answers

INFO:
Model: SGH-M919
Kernel: 3.4.0-cyanogenmod-g93df44d [email protected] #1 Fri Jan 31 22:47:46 2014
ROM: CM 10.2.1-jfltetmo
Build #: cm_jfltetmo-userdebug 4.3.1 JLS36I 5ce70171d1 test-keys
Recovery: ClockworkMod 6.0.4.7
Basically, ever since I flashed AOKP a while back, my phone has been acting weird. Every once in a while the phone will freeze and black lines will appear, immediately followed by the phone re-booting. It happens completely at random. Afterwards, I flashed various ROM's and Android versions thinking that maybe the ROM was the issue, to no prevail.
Also, apps such as GoSMS, Instagram, PowerAmp, and my Camera, to name a few, bug out and either crash or freeze the phone and again it re-boots. The phone doesn't produce sound (from internal speakers or headphones, when plugged in). The Camera app will not record videos, or lag when record button is pressed, overall most of applications bug out and dont work the way they're suppose to.
My main concern is the random re-booting and what might be causing it, and what can do to fix it?
Thank You for the Help!

I flashed the latest stock firmware, 4.4.2, via odin 3.09. The problems still stand, everything seems fine at first and then things start crashing and phone reboots. Any other thoughts on what might be causing it?

Don't worry about the rebooting my main concern are those black lines appearing I would flash to stock and claim warranty

Nexus 5 random reboot

My nexus 5 reboots on average every 15 minutes during use.
It runs android 4.4.2 stock not rooted. It freeze for 5 seconds and then it reboot.
I tried do the factory data reset, but it still randomly reboots.
I got some last_kmsg files and there are 3 different "last boot reason":
- kernel_panic View attachment kmsg.txt
- wdog_reset View attachment kmsg2.txt
- wdog_bite View attachment kmsg5.txt
Please help me, what should I do?
Thanks

so your device is completely stock and locked with no custom rom or kernel ever or currently applied?
your kmsg's all point to issues i've seen with users on a custom kernel. specifically a user on one version of android and a kernel on a different decimal version (i.e. 4.4.2 firmware and 4.4 kernel, etc).

Yes, I didn't installed any custom rom or anything.
Maybe it's an outdated kernel (Nov 20 1013)? View attachment 2516120
If it is outdated, please tell me how I can update it (I just recived my first Android phone, I'm quite a noob (now))
Thanks
Edit:
I just got a new reboot reason: Last boot reason: hw_reset View attachment kmsg8.txt
Should I root it and install Franco kernel? Will this stop the rebooting?
I have somewhat the same problem although my device doesn't reboot every 15 minutes but rather 2 times every day.
I have the same android and kernel version so I thought I'd bump this post.
I also am experiencing similar behavior. It reboots maybe twice a day. I was on CM11 and was getting frequent reboots suddenly one day. Tried the Franco kernel with no better results. I switched back to stock everything except TWRP, now they are fewer, but still annoying. Could it maybe be an app that we have in common? I did not experience these reboots when I first got the phone, nor for months with CM11, so it stands to reason that it is something that changed recently.
kernel_panic
My phone has never been rooted and it's running stock 4.4.2 with various apps installed.
I've had occasional random reboots and some were before the 4.4.2 update. I've been unable to work out why but if I had to guess, it would be that it's Wifi related. Previously, it's happened when the phone was on the table, apparently doing "nothing". Today it happened when I was clearing a notification.
The last reboot before today was twelve days ago and the "bugreport" contained no "boot_reason". The bugreport I generated after the reboot today, shows "bootreason=kernel_panic". Not really sure what that means so maybe someone can tell me? I'd really like to know whether this is a hardware or software issue.
I did ring Google support after the reboot twelve days ago. The support person suggested I run the phone is "safe mode" or reset it and run it for a few days without installing any apps to confirm that the cause is not an app that I've installed. I haven't done that because the phone isn't very useful without any apps installed. I told the Google support person that I'd generated a bugreport but he didn't know what I was talking about and had no idea where he could forward it to if I was to send it to him.
In contrast, I also have a Samsung Galaxy S3 that has rebooted itself once in 18 months so I'm not impressed with the Nexus. Not sure what to do, next.

[Q] GT-i9105P android 4.2.2 constantly rebooting

Hi all, I'm new to the forums. So I am very sorry if I post in the wrong section or something...
I have this problem, with android 4.2.2 for my samsung galaxy s2 plus device, after I updated the old 4.1.2 with samsung kies.. I was using the 4.2.2 fine with no problems... untill my device rebooted out of the blue. And so it started rebooting constantly every 1-2 hours or so... And I was wondering if anyone could tell me where the problem is... I tried various firmwares from samfirmware.com flashed with odin did factory reset. nothing helped. but the funny thing is once I flashed back to 4.1.2 android device worked perfectly fine, no reboots. I really want to use the new 4.2.2 but it irritates me that it constantly reboots the device. Maybe some of you have encountered the same problems? anyone could help?

Constant reboot does not happen on me but deep sleep.
You might want to flash the firmware again, perhaps a newer one like Switzerland's.
try flashing I9105pPXXUBMI1 firmware..dont have any problem with it..
Maybe you should first backup your data, then do a full wipe of /cache /data, dalvik cache (also with the stock recovery)
Try also to format internal memory and your sd if you have any, so try to flash again with odin
Could the reboots happen because of my sim card? I've read somewhere that the problem might be caused by the sim card inserted...
reboot constantly

if you flash again:
1) backup your data - sms,contacs,media,apps .....

7) plug the phone to pc with usb
8) flash the stock rom you can download from samsung you need to know what version i9105p - with nfc 9105 without nfc
wait until odin give the message at top left pass in green color unplug your phone ,

For me this is the worst 4.2.2 firmware for S2+.....A lot of lag and bugs.....The first german 4.2.2 update is the best for me (best performance and amazing battery life)-That's my personal opinion

Maybe you're right. But still I find this firmware better than old 4.1.2.. and I reccommend it only to those who experience the same rebooting problem as me. Its the only 4.2.2 firmware that doesnt make my galaxy s2 plus reboot by itself so I dont have much of a choice

Random reboots, haelp plz?!?

Heya guys, my brother's Nexus 5, bought alongside mine almost 1 year ago now, has suddenly started rebooting, seemingly at random. I would like some help diagnosing and hopefully solving the issue.
Here is a timeline of the steps I have done so far:
Uninstalled Facebook Messenger app, as ppl online mentioned it was a causing reboots after an update. Reboots continued.
Then tried to clear cache on recovery mode, only to get the msg that "E:/Cache could not be mounted. From that moment on the phone started behaving erratically, showing wrong date/time, not connecting to data signal or wifi, among other issues.
I proceeded to unlock bootloader and flash the latest 4.4.4 img, phone booted ok and started going through the backup restore process. After about 8 or 9 apps installed, phone rebooted on its own again
Asked my brother to run the phone in safe mode for a while and try to observe whether it reboots or not while running only Google apps. We are currently at this step, as I want him to run the phone for at least 12 hours in safe mode
What else would you do? Any apps you would install? I was thinking of rooting the phone and having it run a custom kernel to see if it magically solves the issue. Sometimes when the phone reboots it becomes stuck on a loop, not getting past the Google screen but eventually it boots.
I would like to stress that sending it back to Google or to the store is out of the question since we moved to South America and there's no way to send the phone to the US, where it was bought. In light of this, I want to try everything I can before giving up on the phone.

Will get back to you with the exact info in a few hours but since I did a factory reset when unlocking the bootloader I would expect the phone to have most of the storage available.
Will update with the % left once I get a hold of the phone again.

ok, i was actually more curious if the phone actually saw the storage or not. its fairly common for the nexus 5 storage to get corrupted. and one of the symptoms is rebooting. but, good thing that its not your issue. it can very much be an app that causing reboots.. to test, id wipe(factoiry reset) then not install any apps for a day. id no reboots, then id install 1 app at a time to check which app it is.

Thanks for the response, I will certainly try that.
In the case of memory corruption, is there anything to be done?

OK, phone became stuck on boot loop now. It will try to start and go back to Google logo. I think it all points to memory corruption as you said.
Can it be fixed? We don't mind data loss as long as we get the phone back to normal. Thanks in advance
Okay, when you unlock the bootloader and reboot back into fastboot, does the bootloader lock itself? If it does, then that is most likely hardware corruption on the emmc chip. If it stays unlocked, you can try heading into your recovery, getting adb shell privileges, and running e2fsck -fyc on your /system, /cache, and /data partitions (after making sure each one is unmounted). Not sure if this will work, but it's worth a shot. Best of luck.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner. Tried your theory by just pressing the volume down button when it restarts and it takes me to the recovery menu (and keeps restarting) so the power button is indeed pressed on its own.
Do you have any suggestions for fixing it? Any tutorial you'd recommend?
It would be nice if we could just send the phone back and get a new one but it's not an option so we have to tackle the issue head on

As soon as I hear reboots... I think power button. Guess cause I had 2 Samsungs and it happened to both. Lol
Glad you figured it out. ?
Personally, I'd take the sound advice above. But if your brave, just google it... I'm sure you'll find a walk through or video.

Ok guys, quick question. I have to buy the repair parts online since no one in my country stocks them, and I found that there are two parts to the power button: the actual button and a piece that goes underneath with a small switch that the power button squeezes when pressed. Which one should I buy? No repairman will open my phone until I provide the parts and I only have a week or so until the family members that are in the US will travel back to my country.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks
I think you should purchase both just to be on the safe side.

Might anyone know the name of the part which is circled in the attached picture? Or it's part number?
According to my research, the power button itself is not the problem, but what's underneath it, which is a piece that comes soldered to the mobo, though I have seen it being sold separately from Hong Kong sellers (which I'm trying to avoid due to delays and price increase with shipping). I want to procure one of these parts but so far I haven't found anything. Sometimes they would call the piece "power button", the same as the actual button, but it is a different piece altogether.

Random Reboot on Lollipop 5.1

Hi, I've got some random reboots after upgrading on stock Lollipop 5.1 on my Nexus 5.
I've used Android 5.0.1 without any reboots or problem, but after upgrading on 5.1 I'm facing many random reboots when I switch from an app (like a game or Hangouts) using Recents or Home button from NavBar (it also happens randomly when I'm using my phone, like writing a message on Hangouts).
The reboots I'm talking about are not "soft" but "hard", because bootloader's logo (Google) appears and restarts my phone, so it is caused by Kernel Panic (as you'll see in my last_kmsg) and they occured on both stock and custom rom.
Here is a "last_kmsg" when it occured on stock Lollipop 5.1: http://pastebin.com/80dDgzae (attached too).

Here is a "last_kmsg" when it occured on stock Lollipop 5.1: http://pastebin.com/80dDgzae (attached too).

Flashed Android 5.0.1 and no random reboots (as I also said when i wrote my first post).
I don't know if the "question" is clear, but can you help me reading the "last_kmsg" which I attached in first post? Thanks
Same exact thing happening to me also.

The same is happening to me. And it looks like a hardware problem cuz when the phone reboots it keeping reboot until I keep pressing the power button while boots.
I have a bad experience about it. In my Nexus S when updates to Jelly Bean the same occurs until phone suddenly die. (I live in Brazil so, guess what? I have now a wonderful paper weight)
No luck with 5.1.1
You guys found any fix?
I was waiting for 5.1.1 update from Google (5.1.1 code is already available on AOSP and I tested it on Chroma), but unfortunately it didn't solve this problem: it keeps rebooting after a long daytime doing the same things I already wrote in first post. I'll wait for factory Google factory images, but I'm pretty sure it won't fix this.
P.S.: I tested Chroma on 5.0.2 bootloader and modem.
Anyone can read "last_kmg" I posted in first post? Any other has the same trouble?

I just flashed ElementalX kernel but no luck, random reboot happened on 5.1.1 too. By the way it was quite obvious because it happened already on 5.1 Google's factory image (stock kernel so)..
I have exactly the same issue with nexus 5 since upgrading to 5.1.0.
I went back to 5.0.1, which solved it for a few days, but now this happens with 5.0.1 as well.
also, before random reboots happen, the power button becomes extra sensitive, so one keypress causes the screen to turn on and off again, or to display the shutdown menu.
this does not happen when the phone is stable.
Hey guys i have the exactly same problem since i upgraded to 5.1.1 i am non-rooted please need help

Same here.
LG Nexus 5 - Lollipop 5.1.1 LMY48B
Unlocked bootloader;
Rooted;
ClockWorkmod 6.0.4.5 (not flashed - just boot on image when used);
Wipe factory reset (in cwm). Flashed 5.1.1 image files (boot, radio, bootloader, system and cache).
Random reboots, and sometimes with apps optimizing.
I have the same problem with N5 since upgrading to 5.1.1 - never had any problems before. Doing it several times an hour now. Trying a cache clean next, after I wait for the optimising apps to finish yet again!
Hi all,
I had the same problem. Everything stock, up to datę, no root. Phone was rebooting itself several times in a row.
Right now it seems that problem dissapeared. Reboots in my case was caused probably by application Autoguard Dash Cam Blackbox. After removal no reboots for 2 months and no memory leak.
cleared cache and it happened again within a minute...
Does seem to be linked to the power button
There's a long thread about this issue over at Google Groups. It's affecting a lot of users and not just Nexus 5 users. Some in the thread are 4 and 7 users having the same issue. Some have replaced the battery and it has resolved the issue, at least temporarily. Others, like myself, saw success in rooting and replacing the kernel or using a new ROM. Users who have downgraded to Kit Kat report the issue goes away, so despite the power button triggers, it seems to be a software issue. Anyone have any insight? It's getting feisty in Groups thread.

I have N5 kit kat 4.4.2 in Chrome watching videos randoms reboot its happens
This is happening to my fiance's N5. It happens when she's using it and also when it's not being used. When it reboots, it optimizes the apps and says the battery is at 0 when it was a full charge. Only way to turn it back on is to connect it to a charger. Frustrating.
FYI the update to 6.0 did not solve the restart problem. It's either hardware related, app related or a bug that's still in the OS.
I'm selling my Nexus because of this, has been happening for a few months now.
It's not software related, it has to do with the actual power button. Some people had success changing it out, soldering it etc., but I don't have that time or knowledge.
Google wouldn't help, as I'm out of warranty. So I guess it's goodbye Nexus. Really unfortunate given that the phone works fine, it's just a quality issue.. will have to re-evaluate buying another Nexus in the future.

Confirmed the update will NOT fix this issue.

Strange Behaviour with Home button and Power Button. Software or hardware?

Hey guys,
Let me start by saying I'm really enjoying the forums, I've been lurking here for a while and decided it's finally time to make an account.
Let's get into it, picked up a Rogers Samsung Galaxy S6 (Canadian) Home button works occasionally, power button didn't work, but after a quick boot into recovery it started working. Now, I thought the home button problem is software related due to the fact that it only works sometimes, and then when it works amazing for a couple of times, the power button and the home button both stop responding (even after a firmware re-install)
Here's where things get fun.
So I attempt to root the phone and flash the kernel, except I flash the wrong build (noobish, i know) I flashed a g920f xspace kernel found on here, not paying attention to the model number. After getting the "Seandroid error on boot" i figured I did something wrong, but the device boots normally into the lock screen and the phone functions fine, aside from the that buttons repeat their usually sequence of working and not working. I can also install and root with supersu.
I found the right kernel for my device, g920w8 and i attempted to flash again. Which was successful according to Odin, however once I check the kernel build, it still has the old build. I would like to flash a new rom on it and hope that the rom fixes the problem with the home button and power button (I don't really care for the messages coming during boot, just want the darn buttons to work!)
Has anyone experienced this problem before? Warranty is out so I don't really care, as long as I don't brick it.
Should I "dirty flash"? (not sure how)
I'm going to try another firmware install to see if it removes wrong kernel
Update: Firmware reinstalled removed old kernel
Here are the specs for the phone (now stock after the firmware update):
Android Version 6.0.1
Baseband: G920W8VLU5CPI4
Kernel: 3.10.61-9232017 [email protected]#1 Sept 12th 2016
Build Number: MMB29K.G920W8VLU5CPI4
