USB OTG without root and free ? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an external hard drive that supports FAT32 and would like to get it to work without rooting and without buying an app.
I would like the best possible solution for reading and downloading files from the hard drive to the nexus 5.
Thanks.

Install Total Commander: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ghisler.android.TotalCommander and then
Install USB Stick Plugin: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.hechler.tcplugins.usbstick
Open Total Commander and click on usb stick and do what you want

But its only a free trial I need something more permanent. Can I use the commander as a standalone app or do I need a plug in ?

The free trial gets extended as and when the app gets updated... I have used it for ages!
Total Commander is a file manager and it needs USB Stick Plugin to enable USB OTG!
If you don't want to pay that's the only option if you're fully stock.
If are rooted, then you can try out different roms/kernels which have native support for USB OTG.. I can confirm that AICP with ElementalX works great! I just use ES File Explorer to browse my flash drive!

Try nexus media importer v4 4m outside play store..

It's a paid app and OP has clearly stated that he doesn't want to pay. If you're telling him to use cracked apps, it's against the forum rules m8!

File Transfer via WiFi

Since our Galaxy Note is, when connected to PC recognized as a media storage device, transferring files is annoyingly slow.
In some HTC HOX thread somebody had an app to transfer files over WiFi.
I have tested it and think it's worth a try:
"WiFi File Transfer"
Push Thanks if this was helpful.

I didnt install your option but I think since there is free application with the same performance what is the point to buy.

Follow this guide Here.
If your device isn't supported by Adobe it's recommended you stay away from Flash since it's a RAM hog and slows down your browsing
I use to have it. It was downloaded from Google play and then one day it was gone.

Meenova card reader questions

Do I need to be rooted to use it ? And I know I have to download an app to use it but which app free preferably? If I have to root it can I stay on my stock ROM ? Because I love my nexus the way it is.

No. You can use Nexus Media Importer, and it should work. There should be a couple discussions in the Accessories forum that you can search out for people with actual experience using that app. Personally, I'm stock rooted, and I use Stickmount with my Meenova card reader. It works flawlessly for me using my SanDisk 64GB Ultra Micro SD Card. Also, for full read/write compatibility, your SD Card needs to be formatted to FAT32. I believe exFAT and NTFS are supported, but only for read and not write compatibility.
Nexus Media Importer will work if you are not rooted. However It's not free. I'm rooted and I use this soft anyway because I love it

If you use CyanogenMod, CyanogenMod has built in USB-OTG support so you can just browse the files on the MicroSD using any regular File management utility, just like the built in File Manager in CyanogenMod.

[Q] Does the Note 12.2 generate enough power to run mass storage devices

Does the Note 12.2 generate enough power to run self powered mass storage devices? or we have to use powered USB Hub ?
My note pro doesn't run any kind of mass storage devices ( I'm not rooted )
One says external power needed and the other one keep ticking .
my Note 3 run them with no problems.
any one with note pro pls test and advice back.

I tried one on my NotePro but no joy: but, then I can't even get a flash drive to mount. The drive works fine with my older Xoom. With the NotePro it doesn't even power up.

Which USB ptg cable do you have? I have a couple of different ones. I managed to get one of them to let me connect my dive computer and download, but not any of the drives.
I have one that converts the USB 3.0 micro B to a standard USB. It seems to be pretty good. It is a solid piece instead of a cable, but it doesn't work with anything, including my dive computer.

I have a cheap one that came with a keyboard case and it works fine. Have you disabled the built in file manager or something

It is rooted. But I don't believe that is relevant. I have done nothing extra aside from adding a theme and adding apps for multi window

Did you try to use Mass storage before rooting? as one of the posters mentioned that root will give extra permission to fire mass storage with out external power? he said root and instal stick mount / folder mount and enjoy.
I'm afraid to root before making sure that it is not a hardware problem as service center in our area don't know Even that we can mount mass storage device.

I did not try before root as it is the very first thing I did right after peeling off the plastic and powering it up. What is your reservation about rooting?

I dont have any?? I rooted mine as soon as it was available. I was just making sure the answer provided before hand had taken into account that the original posters hard drive was not powered by its own power source. It wasn't clear from the answer I quoted beforehand. I dont see the point in any android device without root.

I agree root is a must but once root warranty will void so i need to make sure that device is free off hardware problems (which I'm not sure).
