Is it really impossible to pick a custom ringtone in 4.4? - General Questions and Answers

Hello
I have a new moto g and I can't find where/how to pick a custom ringtone from my mp3 files, it was possible easily on my previous Nokia c5 with symbian
Am I missing some setting somewhere to enable this?
Thanks.

Hello, most devices don't have an option for the said function. In this case, I don't have any option on my Nexus 5 either.
I have a music player installed called "NexMusic" its simple, fast, feature full. And the best thing is that you can set custom mp3 ringtones just by touching and holding down on the desired music file.
Hopefully this may be a way around the ringtone option.

Simply search "NexMusic" on the PlayStore, its free.

Thank you very much I'll try it out.

Yeah, actually most music player will allow you to do that. So just pick the one you like and the chances are high that it can place any soundfile as ringtone of your phone.

Thanks been using the stock music player from Google.
Does Poweramp has this option too?

You can, you just need a 3rd party file manager. You can change notification sounds and alarm ringtone as well.
Once you get a file manager, it will offer you Media Storage and File Manager when you click on change ringtone

Try wiping its data through the application settings and retry.
Maybe a silly question but is this worth installing outside the US? That is, is the player worth installing as a standalone bearing in mind I couldn't use the Google Music service?

Under Settings, have you selected a Google account to bind to Music?
The ugliest music player ever.
It's cool to try out, nothing compelling about it. No Equalizer, but playlist functions are nice. I'm sure it'll get better when it officially comes out.
Thanks for the info! But not working on my Phone!
Hm, i don't like this Player.
Meh. Still ugly. The original froyo aosp player was better and simpler. HTC Music player is also better.
what theme is that?
Thanx
Thanx my friend!!!! Works fine on my Sensation!!!
oh.. why can't used beats audio.........
Hmm weird. Phone says cannot open file. I downloaded via QR code over wifi, so I'm kinda boggled.
Ok after installing Music from my phone, I can install this. However, I get this message:
What is that "SJ" there for?

A buddy of mine just got the samsung galaxy nexus with ICS from verizon. I made him a custom ringtone and sent it to him. He long pressed it, saved it but can not set as a ringtone. He and i went to vzw and a rep stated it was a ICS issue and not a hardware issue. Has anyone ran into this issue and if so, is it software or hardware issues
Sent from my DROID4 using xda app-developers app
Software, there's no custom ringtones in ICS I think.

Sorry to contradict u but I am on a ics leak. I download "ring tone maker" from the market to make your own custom ring tones.

Yeah, well custom ringtones aren't supported on ICS anymore.

"You can overclock as much as you want, your phone will always seem too slow."
He hooked his phone to his PC and it installed the drivers, then reconized the phone as a "mass storage device" and had several folders one of which was "ringtones" he copied and pasted his MP3 tones there. Once undocked from the PC, the phone reconized the sounds as ringtones and he was able to set them as such.

I guess the version I have does support them otherwise I wouldn't have them

Can you not just put the file into a self created media folder? It should then display as an option?
In Froyo, While listening to music, you press menu and there will be a 'Set as Ringtone' option, Would be totally awkward if ICS dont have it.
There is "set as ringtone" option in ICS. Also you can create a media folder in the SD card and put ringtones there.
There is an app in the market ringtone maker that uses your media to make custom ringtones.

with ics is not possible
I'm running ICS 4.0.4 and it works fine for me. I can either long press the music track and "Use as Ringtone" or select it from the menu.
I did not realize of that long press method it works.

Before you say something....think.....
It is possible. You need to have the right folder location to add it to the list of ringtones. There's one for notifications and one for ringtones. That's how the music apps are able to add them.
/ringtones for ringtones
/notifications for notifications
/alarms for alarms

or you could do
media/ringtones for ringtones
media/notifications for notifications
media/alarms for alarms

Doesn't matter where they are as long as they're named correctly.

Play4Droid v.1.1

Small introduction:
From the begging I was thinking of making this player with my other project. It already has some music player but without any playlist & other stuff.
However the other project is more advanced, uses more RAM and launches longer (due bad graphics support) and I wanted to make a fast player so You could always have it "with You". Also I wanted it to be simple(for now).
Thanks Raykorn for creating an icon.

So what it does:
This program is meant to play music directly from Your android device.
Unfortunately it will never support international chars.
It uses WMP to play the music.

-Download and extract the Play4Droid v1.1.rar (skip the spam)
-Now launch Play4Droid.exe
-Set up the path to Your music folder like for example like on screenshot & save it.
- You can also use it via WIFI, just enter Your IP address (from adb) and set connection WIFI.

Changelog:
-v.1.0- basic functions via USB like: play, play next, stop, play selected
-v.1.1- the same functions also via WIFI

Waitng forever?
-While using adb via WIFI Your phone may go to sleep, so all the data transfer between PC and phone will stop.
To avoid that I would recommend to You set it to keep screen on or in any other way force it to activity.

I see You've been waiting for this.
So here it is.
v.1.1! You can now use it wirelessly

Ask for Default Application Each Use

Is there any way whatsoever to make it ask me what default app I want to choose each time. As in, the old Just Once/Alway complete action dialog?
I've tried Complete Action Plus. Doesn't seem to have any effect.

I'd love this too, but unfortunately I don't think there is. Sucks because I have to keep switching between Adobe and Write on PDF for my business. **** is annoying.

I just came across something last night that's a decent workaround for most things.
Better Open With (sorry, no link; new member) prompts you with it's own UI, which is still pretty intuitive. It works by having you set the default application for each intent it supports (which isn't a lot, but it's most) to itself. Then, when you open something, it will bring up it's own dialog box that's pretty similar to the old style.
It doesn't have as much customization as Complete Action Plus did, but it gets you 80% there.

I thought it was lollipop forced as well, but both my Note 4 and my Note 10.1 2014 are running 5.1.1 and give me the choice of running specific apps just once or always, could it be the Note 5?
