Headphone jack icon but no head phones - Verizon HTC One (M8)

I've had this phone since release day and have had no issues. Till today. Wtf is this?! My headphone icon is in the status bar but I don't have anything connected. When I plug in headphones there is sound...but when I pull it out the icon stays. Boom sound is gone. Only notifications work. No music or YouTube from the speaker.
Any ideas?

Here a screenshot....probably doesn't matter though. I don't have anything plugged in.

this on stock or custom rom? I'm running stock and see nothing unless headphones in. If persists after factory reset, definitely hardware flaw.

Its stock. I tried restarting a few times...randomly it went away.not sure what that was.

Possibly dust/debris in the jack

I had a pair of wireless ear buds hooked up to about 4 hours ago. The ear buds were turned off and I only noticed the problem after wiping down my phone an hour ago.

Wiping down? Did it get a bit wet or moisture could trigger a false connection

Yeah I used a clorox wipe. I've been doing it once a week since my Droid X. Its damp. Not super wet.

Headphone icon problem.
Same problem here, no headphone is connected but icon is still standing...tired of this...:crying:

I have the same problem but with a HTC One M7. A bit of forum searching showed that i'm not the only one. It's probably just a bit of dirt or grease or something.
I followed the solution by homer285 at the end of this thread and it worked for me.

I had this issue in other devices and was able to cure it by inserting and removing the jack very quickly about 10x in succession.

I had the same problem. Tried cleaning the phone jack and all but to no avail. The way I fixed it was to completely drain the battery, recharge it and switch it on. And voila, the icon was gone.

Hi all I am having the same problem I was using wired headset but when I unplugged them the icon was still there i have tried draining the battery and it didn't work does any one else know how to fix this problem

I like the 10x solution super techy lol

Mine did this for about a day when it got a little rain on it, went away no problems since.

I also had this issue with my M8. After trying your suggestions, and failing to succeed, i went into the bootloader and restarted it from there, worked like a charm. Hope it helps you guys.

Faced this issue with some ROMs. Am on Android Revolution now, and don't face this issue now *touch wood*.
I had this same issue a couple weeks ago, ended up having to get a warranty replacement... You can try cleaning out the usb port with compressed air... somehow a couple of the pins get dirty and connect causing the phone to think it is in car mode.. you might also have the same issue when you factory reset or install a new rom it thinks it is in car mode from the get go... good luck
Fixed the issue by Removing the Sim Card and restarting the phone. i Did not Reset the phone as suggested by the HTC Rep. I hopes this helps someone else....

Headphone icon in notification bar. I didn't put on.

OK I dropped my Nexus-S in the sink doing dishes this morning I grabbed it lightning quick out of the sunk which was not filled up. It did get the phone wet but inky fir one second. I took it apart to sit dry for an hour.
So I turn it on and it actually worked. But the headphone icon is in the notification bar. I never used headphones on this phone.
And watched a uTube video and there was no sound probably because headphone icon on ?
Any tips for phones that fell in the drink ?

I would dismantle the device, put it in rice, let it rest there for like 3 days to a week w/o powering it on.
If your unlucky contacts on the headphone jack (or worse parts) are corroded, have to exchange them then or try plugging in/out a headphone several times.

I ran GPS and a youtube video for an hour straight to help warm it up and dry off the phone, and strangely it works 99% perfectly, only thing that is ****ed up is the speaker for media is low and garbled and bluetooth doesn't seem to work now, other than that it works normally.
I have heard of that before, put inside rice. But I need my phone for business all day, can't be out of a phone for a day, let alone three, would kill me.
Worse case I look on Craigslist for a cheap Nexus-S 4G, or find a deal on some other new phone ?

Car Mode turn on

hi people.. A few days ago my inspire switched to car mode all by it self, and since then it happens every day, even though i have tried to turn it of when the notification apears, also this problem has made it that way that every time i make ar recive a call it switches to speaker imidietly all by it self,,what should i do?
Please help somebody
Just freeze it in titanium backup and unfreeze when you need it. When you have time, reinstall the rom.
Same happens with me.. so i removed dock mode from system/app/ & locations from root uninstaller..
now i have speakerphone always on whenever i get call.... what to do for that??
My fiancee's inspire was having the same problems as this and all that it was was a faulty micro usb connection...also try to clean the contacts inside the charging port with a small brush, if you still don't have any luck after that just let me know!

Speaker always on even after I froze Car Panel
Hi, same problem here, car panel started popping up randomly + speaker always on when I receive or make a call after I flashed the New ATT stock rooted (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1810461), froze the app which resolved the car panel problem, but my speaker is still on, anyone would know of any patch that could fix this please?
Thanks

I had this issue as well. I cleaned out the Micro USB port the best I could and couldn't seem to stop it from happening unless I unrooted and switched back to the stock ROM (I'm guessing this was only because the stock ROM doesn't have the option for a dock and thus the event is ignored) via the AAHK. My solution was to pay the five dollars for NoDock (link to the trial version) which stops Car Dock from launching and stops the speaker from turning on the calls. You could try looking at other options as well, I just wanted a fix so I paid for it.

Mic Problem

Hello!
Last night my Nexus S fell into a cup of water. It was only the bottom part where the USB port and Mic is. It was for a quick second.
Later that night I made a phone call just fine no problems. Later I played around installing ROMs here and there. I went back to stock using the google images (att version).
This morning when I tried calling, the other person could not hear me. I tested this using using my moms phone and it is nothing no sound whatsover. I tried reinstalling the stock image but nothing.
Is my Mic broken??
Yeah, probably. You shouldnt use your phone if something like this happes. You should turn off the phone and remove battery, let the phone dry few days.

Keeps going into car mode...

My M8 for the past week has been entering car mode for no apparent reason. Could it be there is something wrong with the USB port on the phone or something else?
It's the charger/cable you're using. My M8 does it as well with a cable (that's a power-only cable, no data pins) I use to charge my phone from my PC with. I've had 4 replacement M8s (all for separate hardware issues) and they all did the same thing on the same cable. It hasn't done it with any of the other several chargers I use at home. But when it does to it on that one cable, it only seems to do it when I try to use any demanding apps/games while plugged in. It won't do it if I'm just poking around the launcher or browser.
Mine is happening when not plugged in also.

Ahh, well then yeah, I would have to say there's definitely some hardware issue with your USB port then.
Yup, my phone is screwed its stuck in car mode, tried everything. Is there a way to edit a system file to completely disable it? Replacing phone is not an option for me.

I've tried disabling/freezing anything with the word "car" in it in Titanium Backup to no avail on my M8, it still does it with that same cable. When it does it and the "Car Mode Enabled" notification shows up in the notification shade, I can long-press it and go to app info, where it takes me to "Android System", so it appears to have hooks deep into the Android OS and something you can't really disable. This Xposed module may have some options to disable it or at least keep it from being so invasive if you're rooted.
But I guarantee you that you can get the phone replaced under warranty, even if you have it S-Off'd/unlocked, because I have done it. Unless your phone is physically damaged..? But even then, they may not charge to repair the USB port or motherboard if that's the only issue. Can't hurt to ask HTC.
I seem to have "fixed" it by plugging it in about 20-30 times and violently yanking out the cable... Not sure how long this fix will last since looking into the port I seen nothing wrong with any of the pins or any contaminants in there, also high pressure air didn't work.

I had exact same issue. It is debris stuck in the port. Get some computer duster or air compressor and it will clear it up
Nice
Hey you guys need to go to app manager then swipe to (all) under that you should disable dock mode and car mode then reboot. Should fix problem for live. Some magnets and other objects will toy with the sensors in your phone expecially the ones by the USB connector
I've been having this problem too. The Car app and Daydream would randomly open and close. I've just performed a hard reset and it appears to have fixed the problem.
----------UPDATE 3 DAYS LATER.....
So a hard reset has not fixed this. The car app did not open for a couple of days but I have had the loud speaker turning on every time I answer a call. I've just used my earphones with the phone for the first time since I performed the hard reset and now the car app is opening again. I've tried to clean out the 3.5mm socket but its not making a difference. It seems strange that the hard reset did kind of fix it until the earphone socket was used. Now I really don't know if it's a hardware or software issue!
I had the same issue with my M8 unlocked version. Also had the problem where the speakerphone would go on and off during calls and some other issues but now since updating to the newest HTC build with Android 5.0 I haven't noticed anything.
Could it be that HTC were aware of these issues and have now fixed them?
Have any of you had progress with the new update or are the issues still apparent?
Will update later when I have had more time to test the new software out but as of now it looks like its fixed.
Mine just started doing this tonight too.. no matter what kind of cable gets plugged in to it, it goes into car/ docked mode and turns my wifi on, and rotates all around when I don't want it to. It's VERY annoying. I tried doing a factory reset on it and it's still doing it when I plug a charger in. It also is doing it just randomly when no cable is plugged in.
I'm wondering if a lot of people are having this issue recently, if it was something in one of the recent updates to the HTC service pack sent out by HTC via the Play Store. Anyone know???
Well, so much for that update...
After almost exactly a week without any problems it started acting up again this morning. In and out of carnode. Guess I'll just make use of my warranty and send it in for service.
yep.. me too. Did a reset and was working fine for about a week and just started doing it again today. WTF.
This was happening to me back in the fall. IIRC, my fix was to clean out the charging port. Look for how-to on web. I think the problem is some crossed pins with dirt making the phone think it's plugged in to dock.

My phone just started doing this on the 5th.
It also rotates when it's not supposed to? It is so annoying and idk what to do. Is this a. HTC issue or what?

I had my phone sent in for service and it turned out to be a faulty speaker. They swapped it and I haven't encountered any of the problems I had prior to sending it in.
How the speaker was interfering with the operating system I have no idea, my best guess it was shorting out something but it's just a theory.
phone keeps entering car mode
I have had this issue and completely fixed it, on your phone find car mode, scroll down to a hidden settings menu, in settings disable auto dock mode, auto connect, in fact disable everything, then exit car mode using the exit button. Restart your phone and hopefully it never enters car mode again and charges normally.
I had this issue for months and bought a new phone that I didn't like so came back to the HTC and eventually fixed it.
This is the flex USB cable. They go bad and cause car mode / dock mode like this. The cable itself is $14 and you likely will be replacing the sticker speaker grills which are $11. I have personally repaired this and it is the only permanent fix. Not disabling an app. Not removing an app. This failure is due to hardware and hardware only.
BTW.... way to dig up an old thread lol.

I have this issue since three days and it's driving me mad.
Tried all the suggested solutions and nothing worked so far.
I've ordered a new USB flex cable with charge dock pcb. I'll be sure to post my experiences with that, hope it fixes this annoying issue as Dottar suggested
