[Q] WiFi Calling? - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know when or if we will be receiving the ability to call and send sms over WiFi? I had this feature on my Note 3 and used it all the time while on campus. Kind of sad that it is not a standard feature on our S5.

In due time. Sprint is sending update to more and more (recent) phones to enable this feature. Just be patient.

Google voice lets you do it.

Yes, you can... but to do that you have to allow GV to become the "middle man" of your SMS activity. This has (in my case), caused text messages to get delayed and sometimes lost on my phone. I would just use hangouts and start communicating more and more through hangouts directly (vs SMS). In time, it will be the messaging and VOIP app of choice for android users. GV is going away (once they fully integrate its features in hangouts).

I'm definitely going to have to try out GV and see how well it works until we get an update to integrate WiFi into the GS5 natively. Now with GV do you have to do any type of switching on and off the WiFi over sms like you do on the Note 3?

no switching required. it uses data via wifi or mobile data. this is in opposition to SMS using 1X channel.

They supposedly added it. Not sure how to enable it

Google Voice doesn't make VOIP calls, it requires an actual number to connect to. However, you could get a plan that allows you to make calls to specified numbers without using minutes, then set your GV # as one of them, and make all the calls you want without using minutes.
GVoice makes VOIP calls. I measured the bandwidth at the router when I was on WIFI. I also set up a phone with no service with a different phone number. I also tested GVoice on WIFI by changing throughput and testing jitter and the effect on the VOIP calls.
I used Groove, I didn't try the calls with another method, although a Gchat session should work the same.

Thanks for the post, I didn't actually catch that. I was just stating that GVoice does indeed use VOIP if it is set up to do so. I believe GVoice allows for free calls to US and Canada, as well as free calls from another country into the US and Canada.
Your solution is pretty awesome if you need that service. I would like to see an analysis of codec quality, delay, bandwidth usage, jitter, etc to see how it compares to GVoice. Google keeps saying that free GVoice calls will expire, but so far its been renewed. It will be nice to have an alternative, particularly a good, free alternative.
Have you tried your method with success? How is the subjective call quality and call drop rate, etc?
Thanks for the info

U need high speed connection/WIFI to get better call quality.
I have used these apps and prove it work succesfully. The only issue is the call have a delay about 1 sec, so u need to be patient to wait the answere after u speak coz ur voice will be heard after the delay.
Viber will only allow free calls to other Viber users, unless they changed that at some point. And GV must have changed then if you can make calls with it VOIP style with no cell service and only wifi, as it was only a call forwarding service before, meaning you still needed to have the ability to make calls through the phone.

I know you can use the web version of Google Talk as an endpoint for outgoing calls now. I haven't messed with any versions on device though (and if it works, we'd still probably have the audio issue on the Charge).
I used Google voice in Puerto Rico to place free calls over wifi. You can't be in airplane mode because it uses the normal dialer, but it does not use any cellular airtime to place the call.
Google voice integrates well with the android OS. My gf uses it to stay under her 450min plan.

Yeah, I can only speak regarding usage of GVoice with GrooveIP. Otherwise a phone call would have to be initiated in Google Chat. Without Groove, you probably won't know you have an incoming call, at least not in time to answer it.
My buddy uses Groove all the time on his WiFi with excellent results- it works okay on 3G in good coverage and it works excellently on 4G. I have enough minutes and crappy coverage so I generally don't use Groove a whole lot, but it sure is cool to be able to send/receive calls anytime to your GVoice number. I also set up the Google Voice app on the phone alongside Groove (I configured Google Voice app somehow not to notify/bother me). Groove does the phone calls and Google Voice app does the text. This way you can send/receive calls and texts for free without delays. It works brilliantly, and its nice to forward Verizon's voice mail to GVoice, then configure GVoice to forward an email for each text, voicemail, and missed call you get.
If I had better coverage, I would only use GVoice. There is a bit more delay with GVoice than a 1X call, I would say, but not bad.
Is it verified that Viber only works to other Viber callers?
I'm a little cynical that somehow the carriers will try to crack down on Google Voice users or that Google will at some point stop free calling.

It works to call anyone, but it is only free calling if the other user is also a Viber user. They may have changed it since I last looked though, but probably not.

MMS over WI-FI?

Would like to start off by saying thanks to all the developers that take their time to make us all happy. Now on to my question.....Is there or will there ever be a option on this stellar device that will allow MMS over WI-FI or even the opportunity to have simple WIFI calling? I did a search for this, but couldn't come up with a definitive answer. Any input would be better than none.
Thanks in advance

[Disregard all of this, thought we were talking about SMS]
I searched all over recently for the exact same thing, except I wanted on where I could keep my current number. I didn't have any luck. There are options like mighty text and desksms that let you send texts through your browser but its still using your carriers service. You could use text+ or other similar options to text over wifi for free but you won't have the same number.
Basically, unless you have imessage (obviously not) or you setup a google voice account and change your main number over to that, or if you're lucky enough to be on verizon which has google talk capabilities, you're lost. And just do a search for voice calls over wifi, there are tons of ways.

That is great and all but my main concern is that NONE of my MMS go out nor come in, so I am fishing here for a solution as there was on the SGS2 where you could flash a fix that would use the WIFI connection in order to send out the MMS instead of the NON existent Edge data connection. I am hoping this is making sense. I will look for the post for the SGS2 and update with what I am talking about.
Sorry for any confusion

I am able to send text messages because they use the simple GSM technology, but when it comes down to sending those pesky MMS (photo) messages, they WILL NOT go through. I have reset the APN a ton of different ways but nothing seems to work. That is why I am asking for some sort of development on MMS over wifi.

[Q] Google Voice on Kit Kat 4.4

Hi everyone. I am planning on getting the Nexus 5 and I am planning to get the $30 a month plan from T-Mobile which allows for 100 minutes of talk, unlimited texts, and 5 GB of 4G Data. I was planning on using the Google Talk app with Groove IP or talkatone to call because I already have my Google Voice number and I just want to use my data to call people (In other words, I want to use VOIP so I can call with Google Voice over my data). With the integration of Google voice and hangouts will I still be able to do that? Please someone reply because I am ordering the Nexus 5 in a few days (I am waiting for reviews first).

On the same boat, I'm sure you will for now, keep in mind Google has announced they are killing 3rd party access to GV next year so u will have that VoIP capability for so long. I'm on ST now but do plan on porting over to TMO next month and do plan on milking VoIP Talkatone for as long as I can till they completely kill it. Google I believe may fully offer a full VoIP solution which would in fact be great to have.
I don't know about Groove but Talkatone has announced they r working on a new product that mirrors it's current capabilities (sans GV), looking forward to what they r cooking up.

So if Google offers full VOIP, then there is no need for third party apps right? And you are saying that Talkatone is working on something just like Google Voice?? But the only thing is, with talkatone, you will most likely get another number, and then you have to go through the process of switching numbers like telling everybody about your new number and making sure htye change it and........its just a big hassle. I hope Google extends the deadline or I might have to switch to the $45 plan from straight talk. How is the HSPA+ on their network? Is it close to 4G. I am fine if it is not as fast as 4G but I want it more faster than 3G for sure and I know it is that. I am still debating on using Google Voice still or just switching to Straight Talk.
The Walmart plan does not allow for call forwarding or conditional forwarding so you will never be able to setup Google voice to be your voice mail system... Just a heads up..

Correct, no more 3rd party apps needed. No idea on how/what Talkatone would offer but my guess is yes a new # would be needed. Gotta wait and see.
On ST I actually have LTE, pre LTE days my internet was horrible, since they launched LTE everything has been really smooth, haven't experienced any throttling yet *knock on wood*. Honestly I'm happy with ST but wouldn't mind saving the extra 15 bucks a month and getting 2x the limit. My only worry is service, here in Miami I have heard a lot of dead spots for TMO, whereas ATT I was with them for like 15 yrs and never have a problem. I'm still gonna try TMO, benefits of having my main number on GV I could cancel and just get any new carrier # whenever I want.

Oh ok I didn't know ST ever switched. I heard that ST throttles after 2.5 GB of data which really, isn't all that bad. I think I am going to stick with TMO for right now or atleast until Google stops their third-party app service.

But when you setup the google voice app it tries to set that option (conditional call forwarding to google voice's voicemail).. Which it cant as the Walmart plan does not support this feature, But yes you can do it through the app thats correct, but i rather full integration.. But if you don't have the finances or the credit to get a post paid account (THE ONLY PLANS THAT SUPPORTS THE FORWARDING FEATURE) and you need to opt for the Walmart plan i guess you have to do what you have to do.
Either way gets it done...
Yea it's all good to me either way. You will still get a GV Voicemail notification. There are some downsides to pre paid. I had straight talk for a year and then went to att. But kind of regret having a contract now. I am going to try aio wireless before too long here.

You don't transfer your Google Voice number to Straight Talk. Straight Talk will give you a Straight Talk number. Then you download the Google Voice app. When you first open the Google Voice app on your android device it will take you through configuration. I set mine to " use Google voice to make all calls" and I don't even use my carriers number at all.
So you will have 2 phone numbers. You give out which ever one you want to. The GV number will work only if you have the Google Voice app installed. You can also send/receive text only texts and receive voicemail via the Google Voice app. Google Voice also works on a desktop computer through its web interface. You can also block numbers via Google Voice.

It gets kind of tricky when you want to use a VoIP like GrooveIP to make and receive calls over data/wifi instead of your carriers phone service. You can set your phone to natively use your Google Voice number to make/receive all calls, but it will use your plans minutes instead of data if you do not have GrooveIp or Talkatone setup correctly (it will come through your native android dialer and use your tmobile minutes by default).
I have attached a link for a guide that was originally written in the Galaxy Nexus forum. It has a guide to Google Voice + VoIP calling. I have used GrooveIP on my wifi only tablet to make calls over wifi, but have never tried bypassing carrier phone service on my cellphone using GrooveIP. It can be done though.
*Also be aware Google has said they will eventually disable access to Google Voice from third party apps so this may mess things up in the future. Have a backup plan ready just incase they do this. We may be only abel to ue the Hangouts app in the future. Also you cannot send or receive pic and vid messages via Google Voice, just text only messages.

ok so I cannot send and recieve pic or vid messages but I can just use another app like GoSMS or some other apps that use your regular phone number(in my case, my google voice number) to send and recieve text messages right? I am thinking that i should not get a plan first when I get my nexus. Like set it up and everything by using wifi to send and receive calls and texts and then later on I will get a plan and just forward my number that i get once i get my plan to my google voice number.

You will have to use a carriers phone number to send pic and vid messages. Google Voice's servers cannot handle that type of data, so you cannot send/receive pic/vid messages with your GV number at all. A Google Voice number is only good for makings calls and TXT, not SMS or MMS.
If you are going to use your Nexus on wifi only with no plan, you can use GrooveIP to make/receive calls over wifi. You will need a strong data connection though. Its best to stand near the router. You will need a Google Voice number to use with GrooveIP over wifi. In summary you will need: Google Voice number + Google Voice app + GrooveIP or Talkatone + strong wifi signal
You can also use the Hangouts App to text and video call people over wifi. The people you are contacting will need a gmail account and have the hangouts app open and running on their phone or computer.

Ok thank you, that really helped. I will probably end up using talkatone just because it has good call quality even on 3G. At least that was was it said on that article you linked. Now on the talkatone website( http://www.talkatone.com/ ), It shows an iPhone that has talkatone and he sent a picture message to someone else and he also received a video message from someone else. Does this mean that you can send mms through talkatone only.

I don't know much about talkatone I have never used it. As far as I know the only carrier or data provider that has had success with pic messages via a Google Voice number is Sprint. Doesn't work anywhere else.
Other people using the talkatone app may be able to receive pic/vid messages through talkatone but not if you send via a GV number. Possibly if you are sending via some other type of method or account. Not totally sure.

Hangouts Google Voice Integration! Nexus 5 WiFi calls [INFO]]

Hello Everyone,
Since everyone is so hyped about the new Voice integration with hangouts and more specifically, we finally have the ability to make outgoing call without using 3rd party programs, still no MMS with the google voice number but the outgoing calling alone is awesome.
Anyway, since this is XDA and the new functionality gives XDA's plenty of money saving ideas I'm certain of that, here goes.
HANGOUTS & GOOGLE VOICE = 1.6 MB PER HOUR OF CALLING
DISCLAIMER
That is an amazingly low amount of data! I ran this test making a 3 minutes phone using my nexus 5 on LTE. It's by far not a scientific test but a very good estimate of how much data you can save making calls with GOOGLE VOICE THRU HANGOUTS. I'm sure you 30$ a month 5GB t-mobile people can put this to good use, I know I will! (Goodbye stupid deadzones in Brooklyn College ) Finally us Nexus 5 owners have a more legitimate way of making WiFi calls since T-mobile ditched us on that one. I'm plenty excited about all of this! What do you guys think? How will you be using the new outgoing calls feature?

The updated hangouts apk is below in case you didn't get the update yet like me. enjoy!
I am so anxious for this integration. I've already got the new apk and dialer installed, now I keep checking Hangouts for the popup to integrate SMS and voicemail from GV into hangouts. Wish there was a way to force it like the search for OK Google Everywhere.

Same, although my rom still has CM Voice+ and it's still handling the integration quite well. I currently use Groove Forwarder from the play store to switch my GV forwarding based on location. I'm very curious if it will still be functional once I'm integrated, as currently, I don't see any options in the new Hangouts app to determine what number rings. If it stays this way, I'll end up getting double rings (dialer & Hangouts) when someone calls my GV number.

I have the same double ring problem. I'd like to see an option to only accept/make Hangouts calls over wifi because I use Llama to disable the cell radio when on wifi at home (because the cell signal is very poor and it drains my battery very fast and also because I have a Ting "metered" plan and trying to keep usage as low as possible -- basically on cell only when away from home, wifi otherwise). I currently use the older version of GrooveIP, but was hoping to be able to move to Hangouts.

Me too, I keep thinking that maybe I did something wrong and I'm being left out, but Google's just rolling the server-side changes out slowly, I've read. Such anxiety
This actually works for every Android device that can use hangouts/google voice too. Right now I have it on my Galaxy Player, and it works great. I'm glad that Google finally integrated google voice, because it makes things a lot easier lol. I'm surprised that this isn't getting a lot of news.
We still need the GV app to send texts, right? Or am I missing something and it's possible to text using your GV number from the Hangouts app?

I'm checking on it right now, but it seems that you don't need the GV app anymore. You should be able to text using your GV number in hangouts. I'm setting mine up right now.
Here's the topic that google created to set up GV with Hangouts. I ran into a problem where I had to disconnect hangouts in gmail, and then reconnect it to see the Google Voice option in the settings.

Ah, thanks. They don't make it easy to find. Same deal with the Hangouts Dialer, jumping through many hoops to set it all up. I guess they don't want to piss off the carriers just yet.

By disconnect do you mean sign or and then sign back in?
OK, more help needed: how do I switch the number and SMS is sent from when starting a new conversation? I like the "smart reply" option, but sometimes I want to send from the GV number, other times from my cell number (in particular for MMS).

By disconnect I mean reverting back to the original chat in gmail, then going back to hangouts.

Nope also to answer your Google voice question further when trying to access or send message you get this screen. However, I had to unchecked merge messages to even get it to send with hangouts lol.

hangout issue
Hey has anyone had the issue where hangout calls connects, but you get can't hear anything. Basically only one end of the line gets sound for some reason. each time i had to hang up and try again.
I haven't on the 2 test calls I made. Any suspicions as to why its happening?
Whats your OS or ROM, Phone, Network, what was your coverage like. Wifi or mobile network.
The more info the better

Not working for me, still using cell minutes when making calls
?
Edit: I think I figured it out, if I use the phone dialer it asks if I want to use Google voice, it uses minutes, if I skip it and use the hangouts dialer no minutes. So do I need GV installed at all?
Don't need Voicemail on GV, I can use T-Mobile Visual Voicemail.
in order to receive wifi calls there is box to check in settings plus
in google voice settings [web page] I had to stop google from forwarding my google # to my phone [uncheck nexus 5]
this keeps google from forwarding the call twice and keeps the native dialer blocking the hangouts dialer
I'm on wifi 95% of the time so this should lower my $12 Ting bill to $9 on a normal month.

Solution for S5 simultaneous talk and surf issue

This is for the S5, but I assume it would work on the galaxy note 4 and all other devices with this issue.
Hi all, I wanted to let you know that there is a very easy work around for this limitation. It is supplied by Google Inc through the Hangouts Dialer app. I'm not sure whether or not you need Hangouts installed to use it, but it allows you to make calls via the data network and still use the network to browse the web, etc. I have tried it several times at home with WiFi off and it works flawlessly so far.
It's sad that Sprint didn't find a way to bypass this limitation on their own, or at least inform customers, but this is an easy and seamless solution by Google.
I put the icon right next to my default phone icon for future use.
Additionally, I can not believe that Sprint is not aware of this work around. I spoke to a few different representatives today, and none were able to offer a solution.
I found this on my own searching the play store. Hope this helps!!
I posted this in the community forum on sprint.com. Hopefully they will figure out a way to make it work......
Sprint:
As I have stated in other posts, the "Hangouts Dialer" app allows you to make calls over the data connection without WiFi and still be able to surf the web. (Please note, this app is different from "Hangouts", it is "Hangouts Dialer" by Google Inc.)
This works on my S5, and it should work on any device that can install the app.
This has not been suggested by any of the Sprint Agents in any of the posts I have seen. I have seen suggestions to use Skype and other VOIPs, but there are some charges and they require a WiFi signal.
This is very confusing because if the app is able to make calls using the data network, then why doesn't Sprint set up the default dialer to do the same thing if there is no WiFi connection? I do understand that this would increase the load on the data network, but you are losing customers at a significant rate due to this issue. Anybody who needs to be on the phone and confirm appts, emails, etc with the person/client/coworker they are on the phone with is not able to do so. This is a monumental step backwards that is inexcusable with todays technology. Waiting for VOLTE is not a solution, as the time frame on this is not guaranteed.
Please consider my suggestion for the default dialer app. Google already has it functional in the Hangouts Dialer app, so there is no reason it can't be done.
Thanks!

I decided to try this out, since you've been posting the same info in multiple threads. It works, but it's flawed. This ONLY works if you're calling someone who is also using Google Hangouts. (If they aren't, you're prompted to send them an SMS. The reason that we can't make simultaneous voice and data is a limitation of CDMA. Until Sprint updates to VoLTE, it's something Sprint users have dealt with since the first smart phone.

Ramer,
Thank you for responding to my post. I need to point out that you have two apps confused. As above, the app is not "Hangouts". It is "Hangouts Dialer". This is a dialer app. It can call landlines, cell phones, etc. No need for call to go to somebody who is also using Hangouts.
Please install the "Hangouts Dialer" app, turn off your WiFi, call a landline with the app, and then see if you can surf. I have had no issues with it so far.
Please let me know!

I did download and install Hangouts Dialer. Turned off Wifi. When I called my other phone, it worked as you stated. When I called a contact that was not on Hangouts, I get a pop-up that that person is not on Hangouts, do you want to send them an SMS?. Try calling a number (like a business) and see what you get.

If you link up your phone number to Google Voice and than use make a call from Hangout Dialer than you can make phone calls regardless if they have hangouts app or not!

Ramer,
I have called several businesses this way and have had no issues. The post above by zune70 does suggest linking your number to google voice. I don't recall doing that, but maybe I did. Maybe you can try that and see if it works?

Having a google voice number probably is the key, I let my number get cancelled after years of non-use. No biggie, was just testing this out.

Go and type google voice on google and log on to the website with your Google account. There should be an option to add a Google voice number. Click on the one that says use your existing number and type in your number. It should detect that it's a sprint number and continue to the next step to enable google voice on your phone. If you don't want google voice on your phone anymore just go back to he website and disable your number from Google voice. You can always reactivate it at any time you want

Thx for the info this seems to work if your placing the call, question, is there away to talk and surf if your not the one placing the call?
I didn't read the entire thread.. My vzw S3 could have LTE and voice simultaneously. The S5 has a modified modem to disconnect 3G/LTE when sms/voice radio activates for battery saving. Annoying when downloading GB files!
