Sorry if this was mentioned before.
I'd like to have saved contacts to phone call, but not to store it on
google or any other account. To be in my phone and nowhere else.
Not to synchronize in any way. Possible?
Best regards.
Manually add them to Sim card / Phone and disable any syncing.

Contacts > add contact and choose contact storage that you wanna use (in your case local/sim/phone rather than Google Account)
OR
Contacts > settings > export > SIM/Phone and then unsync your Google account. --- This will copy them from your Google account to your device/sim

Well, no local/sim/phone option in my case. That is the very problem.
Nexus 5, 4.4.2.
Best regards.
If you take them off Google and store them on the phone....not sure you can save to sim these days, only phone....they will be gone every time you flash a ROM.
Storing them to Google means they will always be there as soon as you sign in to Google.
You probably know this....just not sure why anyone wouldn't like it. ?

Why would they know my data? It is the part of the game, but I do not care
about that option. My problem is that you all have a mode to choose local/phone,
but I have it not. That, in fact, bothers me.
Best regards.

It seems you only have the option to save to T-mobile contacts now. Is there a way to make Google Contacts default? I accidentally deleted a contact too because of this linked contacts bs. I don't want to use T-mobile contacts since I have saved to google for years and it auto-syncs with my next Android phone. Starting to find some things I don't like about this UI

Seriously? Doesn't sync to Google anymore? If that's true I'm definitely returning this thing...
Mine syncs to Google. When I create a new contact, the first option is "Contact Type". It defaults to T-Mobile, but if you hit the drop down arrow, Google and Phone are other options. Just select Google and fill in the contact info. I don't like that it defaults to TMo, but it's easy to change.

That is a life saver, thank you! Still wish you could change the default to GOOGLE instead of having to change it every time. Oh well, at least it is still and option.
I would say 1 negative to the UI vs stock android in case anyone cares.....something to consider.
No problem.
I agree with the negative, but it's a minor thing.
I haven't tried this yet, but under settings > accounts and sync there's a tmobile sync adapter. perhaps removing it will change the default? If anyone decides to try this EXPORT YOUR CONTACTS IN GMAIL. As it's quite possible it will delete sync'd data possibly removing your google contacts along the way.
EDIT: N/M won't let me delete the Tmobile account.
I don't have this phone yet but has anyone tried clearing defaults for the tmo sync app yet? (In settings/applications/manage apps) That or something similar might allow you to set Google as the default contact entry.
ATT sync is OFF.
Google Sync is ON.
I sign into Google, go to Google Contacts... nothing.
I flash a new rom, I sign into my account on my phone - all my contacts are there. With their painstakingly-manually assigned photos.
Are my contacts being saved in some dark sector of my phone? Are they hidden on some Google Sever? Where can I find them?!

I type "Google Contacts" into Google, and click on the first link. Where should I be looking?
go to Gmail, and on left check Contacts...
Maybe your error is that you search for something not being logged in into gmail, or another account?
If you are using any 2.1 rom then any contact appears on your phone when you sign into google... not Just 'my contacts' or any other group, so check the all contacts tab or whatever it's called. Every contact in your gmail account will appear, even your Craigslist adult services email addresses that you love to send to (the local police know about you). I would venture to say that 99% this is a Google issue and not a phone issue as there is no way your phone pulls these out of the blue. Also if its that much of a problem, hit the menu button in the contacts list and then go to display or settings (can't remember what) and unselect Google contacts.

Well my phone's OS is totally busted, so I guess we'll find out the hard way
Use titanium backup and backup something called "contacts storage" (not the contacts app) and take a backup of it. This is the place where phone contacts are copied to, no matter where else they might be backed up the system. This has been a life saver for me many times, even today.

When you add a new contact does it ask you where you want to save the contact to? choices would be phone, SIM or google.

turn google sync on
yes, that one, the one under sync thingy setting somewhere on your phone, that you have turned off I bet. Let it sync like a crazy wild ass Then check in Gmail contacts on the left and voila. Wizard Magic of the totally not evil google.
Basically, never turn the google sync off, or your'e f-d on contacts and it seems a few other things too.

I had Google Sync on since day one and it never did anything. I even turned it on and off to force the issue.
I have my new flash, and all my contact photos deleted. I have reupped a few of them, and nothing in my Google Contacts yet either. Do I need to "star" them in Android?
Going forward, when you create a new contact and it asks where you want it saved, choose Google. This will automatically save the contact to your Gmail account. When you flash your again and sign in after flashing, your contacts will be there

I like my accounts saved to my SIM card in case anything happens. I would also like them saved to Google as a redundant backup. Why is this not possible?
Hey all.
I love myself so much that I would love to see my face near the "Me" mention within SMS threads.
However, while all my contacts have their own contact icon showing up near their names, I only get to have a grey square near the "Me" mention when I send SMSs (check screenshot above).
Anyone knows how to fix this ?
Thanks !

I'd like to know this too. I have my google profile set up with some info including a pic. The google calendar does seem to pick up my bday from there, but the Messaging app don't appear to be using my picture on my nexus s.
I've tried to do this too on my Hero to no avail.
WTF? for real?
Go in your Contacts and find the first contact card named Me. Then just insert your own photo by clicking the box and selecting it, you are done.

WTF? Thats more retarded idk what google doing these days.
Do it manually then by going to your SMS thread and clicking "Me" and by adding yourself via New Contact. Then put whatever you want in data input and click on the User Avatar and pick your photo.
You need to ensure your mobile number is attached to the contact.
If you're using handcent you can

You just need to sign in to your google profile and add a picture there. Then it will change.

Click settings > account settings. Click Edit Profile.
If you change it with handcent it will work for all SMS apps even after uninstall of handcent. Works for me on the stock message app.

Do you have a contact created with YOUR mobile phone number attached to it?
You may also need to ensure that "My Phone Number" in about -> phone shows your number (search for a guide if you need it).

Yes, I do have a contact with my phone number attached to it.
However, I'm not able to change the "My phone number" setting in the "About" menu.
See screenshot above :
Guys - this is in other threads - you need to assign your phone number on your SIM. You CANNOT do this form the NS. So - find some old phone, plug your SIM in and write the phone number to it - then when you use it back in the NS you'll get your picture...

How do I do this ?
Just inserted my SIM card in an iPhone, and I cannot edit the "My number" entry.
As the chap above said this is discussed elsewhere. Sony erricson phones will let you do it.
OK I worked around the issue in this way:
From my gmail (on a computer), I created a contact for myself. I added my phone number, and my gmail account as the email. Then for the picture, the contact manager let me use "their picture". In this case, "their picture" is the picture I assigned to myself in my google account profile.
This really isn't a "solution", just a workaround. You also really shouldn't have to use 2 phones to sync your own google account profile to your own "pure google experience" phone. Android should automatically have a contact that syncs your google profile info, so you don't have to type it in twice. Right now only the profile pic is auto-sync'd.

Hi All,
Very new to XDA, first of all a grant thanks and appreciation for all the developers and management team of XDA, for creating such platform to share thoughts and each and everyone's questions.
My issue here is the contacts management in Android. I think Google hasn't given that much importance in that section while upgrading to Lollipop. And even in Marshmallow too, the same story. If you are using a stock android or a GPE version in any of your handset, you might have end up with your phone showing all the contacts from your gmail account, including the email account that you only use in gmail for your mails. Yes its ok in a regular basis for those who want to show all their contacts contents in one place, but will be too confusing rather annoying if one wants to have only their phone contacts to show up there.
I hope it was there in KitKat but somehow missed when we upgraded to Lollipop. I seriously would like to know from all of you is it there for all of you or just i am one of the few ended up with not knowing the correct settings somewhere hidden inside.
If anyone there can help or else need to wait fingers crossed to wait for any of the forthcoming updates from Google to have this option enabled.
Thanks & Regards

Hey,
There is an option to customize which contacts you want to show up.
Open the contacts app, click on the overflow menu button (3 dots) and select "Contacts to display".
From there you can choose which contacts you want to show up.
Hope it helps.
Cheers.

May I know which android version you are using...?? I am Currently on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
Hey guys.
I got decent knowledge about Android.
I got some knowledge about rooting, flashing, and troubleshooting. But I have a problem.
And ofcourse I did Google it before creating a thread here
So I was using my phone but what I noticed is out of nowere my contacts were gone.
My contacts are stored in Google.
I did go to settings > Accounts > (the acc) > and it is bussy with syncing contacts. (Feels like it is stuck on synching)
Drive, gmail, etc all off them did synch except for Google Contacts.
When I open the Google Contacts in my webrowser all off the contacts are there.
But inside Google Contacts App, it doesn't synch.
Things I tryed :
1. Removed all off my google accounts from my phone settings. cleared cache in TWRP. rebooted added back again.
2. Auto-Synch is on.
3. Tryed few times "synch now" (manual synch)
4. Rebooted few times.
5 Cleared app data from Google Contacts and Play services.
Any sugestions?
I did upload a screenshot here below. So you can see how it looks like.
And sorry for my bad english.
On your PC/MAC go to Gmail/Contacts and refresh your browser. Sign out.
On your 1+6 sign out and sign back in, that should do the trick.
