[Completed] Android Contacts - XDA Assist

Hi All,
Very new to XDA, first of all a grant thanks and appreciation for all the developers and management team of XDA, for creating such platform to share thoughts and each and everyone's questions.
My issue here is the contacts management in Android. I think Google hasn't given that much importance in that section while upgrading to Lollipop. And even in Marshmallow too, the same story. If you are using a stock android or a GPE version in any of your handset, you might have end up with your phone showing all the contacts from your gmail account, including the email account that you only use in gmail for your mails. Yes its ok in a regular basis for those who want to show all their contacts contents in one place, but will be too confusing rather annoying if one wants to have only their phone contacts to show up there.
I hope it was there in KitKat but somehow missed when we upgraded to Lollipop. I seriously would like to know from all of you is it there for all of you or just i am one of the few ended up with not knowing the correct settings somewhere hidden inside.
If anyone there can help or else need to wait fingers crossed to wait for any of the forthcoming updates from Google to have this option enabled.
Thanks & Regards

Hey,
There is an option to customize which contacts you want to show up.
Open the contacts app, click on the overflow menu button (3 dots) and select "Contacts to display".
From there you can choose which contacts you want to show up.
Hope it helps.
Cheers.

Yes, but it just gives you the option to select the account, like Gmail accounts, whatsapp, skype....etc. And don't dont have an option to select to show the contacts in SIM, or even cant create a new list in phone memory too...

Well, there is an option to display only SIM contacts there.
Also there is an option to customize the contacts to display there, try it out.
Cheers.

[Q] Contacts keep adding everybody I've ever emailed. Any fix?

Hi all. I just migrated from my "old" HTC fuze and got on board the Android train with a Samsung Vibrant. It's fantasic out of the box, but I'm sure after a few more minutes on the forum I'll find something that needs fixing.
One thing that does need fixing is that when it syncs the contacts, it adds anybody I've emailed or responded to, outside of my contact list.
GMail doesn't add these people as contacts, but the droid does. Any fix for this short of going through my contacts every couple days and purging???
I hope this works for you, this is with my Droid Contacts.
Open Contacts -> Settings/More/Options button -> Display Options
There should be a "Choose contacts to display". Select your GMAIL account. Mine is currently set to "My Contacts" and everything else is unchecked. Also check the others listed. Gmail will store random outgoing/incoming emails, as All Contacts, where your contacts are "My Contacts"
Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately, all my contacts are google contacts, and nothing on the phone.
Is there any way to get gmail to not store all the various random emails and people I have contact with? I've dug through the settings and even tried to find something in the labs tab that might stop storage of ALL contacts, but couldn't find anything.

Double check my attacked image, else only other thing i can think of is to remove and readd your google account to your phone.
Ahhh, there's the problem. When I chose Contacts > Display Options, I get a checkbox for my google accounts - there is no drill down for which accounts I can select. I'm on the Samsung Galaxy.
BTW, what screen cap app are you using?
Ok if you can't stop the phone from, getting them then you need to delete them in gmail.
Cause gmail does save everyone you have every replied, or sent email to. It's under other contacts.
just go in there and delete all the ones you don't wont

[Q] Can't save contacts to Google now

It seems you only have the option to save to T-mobile contacts now. Is there a way to make Google Contacts default? I accidentally deleted a contact too because of this linked contacts bs. I don't want to use T-mobile contacts since I have saved to google for years and it auto-syncs with my next Android phone. Starting to find some things I don't like about this UI

Seriously? Doesn't sync to Google anymore? If that's true I'm definitely returning this thing...
Mine syncs to Google. When I create a new contact, the first option is "Contact Type". It defaults to T-Mobile, but if you hit the drop down arrow, Google and Phone are other options. Just select Google and fill in the contact info. I don't like that it defaults to TMo, but it's easy to change.

That is a life saver, thank you! Still wish you could change the default to GOOGLE instead of having to change it every time. Oh well, at least it is still and option.
I would say 1 negative to the UI vs stock android in case anyone cares.....something to consider.
No problem.
I agree with the negative, but it's a minor thing.
I haven't tried this yet, but under settings > accounts and sync there's a tmobile sync adapter. perhaps removing it will change the default? If anyone decides to try this EXPORT YOUR CONTACTS IN GMAIL. As it's quite possible it will delete sync'd data possibly removing your google contacts along the way.
EDIT: N/M won't let me delete the Tmobile account.
I don't have this phone yet but has anyone tried clearing defaults for the tmo sync app yet? (In settings/applications/manage apps) That or something similar might allow you to set Google as the default contact entry.

Facebook for myTouch contact issue

I have the facebook app installed on my phone. When i went to upload a photo onto facebook it gave me the option to use the facebook app or facebook for mytouch. i went ahead and tried it through the mytouch option and i signed into my account which seemed to add my facebook account onto my phone as something it automatically syncs. it synced my facebook contacts to my normally contact...a cool feature and all BUT i dont want it...
i deleted the facebook account off my phone but my facebook contacts are still mixed with my normal ones. i cant delete them either, i tried long pressing and also tried going INTO the contact to maybe edit it and it wont let you do a thing.
any advice?
Were the contacts linked with facebook accounts?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
You may want to sort you contacts, from the contacts > Menu> View and uncheck facebook. It won't delete them but you won't have to deal with them.
Also try clearing the data in the Facebook for MT app, not sure if it will do it but it should't hurt.

They were these were contacts that i've never had in my phone before then they appeared on my actual contacts. Some did/didn't have contact numbers depending if they had them in their actual facebook and what i'm noticing is they all have the little circle by their name greyed out meaning i can video chat with them. I deleted all my video chat programs and cleared all my data for contacts/facebook/video chat and they wont go away.
These people have never been on my phone before it happened right when i tried out the facebook for mytouch.
*i wouldnt mind this but i play a lot of farmville and "those" games and half the people on my friends list are "neighbors" only*

Sadly i'm not rooted and therefore can't post a screen shot...unless theres another route you can advice me on then definitely. Maybe ill just take a photo of it with my camera if there is no other way lol.
After clearing all my info again and uninstalling any qik updates it shows qik in the corner of all these contacts, none of them are linked, and about half have actual content info.
From the contact list - long press - call mobile, send contact as vcard, add a fave now!
From within the contact - clicked on the menu button - all, link, send contact, save to sim, set speed dial
From within the contact - tried pressing every item i could and i can only "Edit" the number to something else...i cant do much else with it.
thanks for the help =)

Sorry man, I tried everything I could to recreate this on my phone with no go.....
Make sure to check your contacts on the gmail site, make sure they are not listed there.
If that does not work it looks like you will need to do a factory reset. Sorry

I was afraid of that...
I went ahead and rooted my phone, deleted qik completely off my system. That took care of it. Hope this doesnt happen to anyone else =/
Thanks for your advice though, i'm surprised it didnt work. It was extremely "stuck" and quite stubborn.

View only contacts WITH phone Numbers (When not using Sense) in JB

Anyone know of any way to make all my contacts from my g-mail that are e-mail only not show up in my contact list.
I only want a list of contacts with phone numbers and I dont want to have to go through the phone app every time to get it.

in your contacts there is an option in the top of the screen that you can tick and untick whatever you want.see if you can do it from there
Not seeing the option at all - I'm not using Sense.

Hmm. You can make a group of contacts with phone numbers in Gmail. Then in the contacts app (in AOSP /CM) press the menu and select customize contacts to view then select the Gmail account then select the group of contacts with phone. It is a hassle, I know.
Sent from my Sensation using AOSP 4.1.2
Or use the dialer and swipe to contacts
Sent from my locked, tampered ville
Was thinking about the option to make a group with people with no number.
I have over 1000 contacts in my gmail account so this would take forever.
Was thinking possibly to try make an app that would automatically put everyone without a number into a specific group.
Really surprised there was none already to do this.
Never done any android coding before so guess I'm going to have to see how this idea goes (if it goes even)

Duplicate numbers in dialer

Hello everyone,
I am running a stock rom on my GS6 and since yesterday, when I had to call someone I noticed that I have duplicate phone numbers for each contact, but only when I type a contact's name using the T9 function of dialer. If I go to contacts, everything is fine.
I noticed that the issue is solved after uninstalling whatsapp. When I reinstalled whatsapp from the play store, it installed version 2.12.176, but I instantly got the update for 2.12.242 which was the version I had before. The issue came back after 30 minutes of use...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had that problem also but because of another app, you need to not sync the app with your contacts. I was able to unsync the contacts from my app. Try going into settings, accounts and see if you can set it to not sync or maybe in the app unsync your contacts.
I don't have this whatsapp contact sync problem, but i had duplicate contacts. Did you try to "merge contacts" from the menu in the contacts app? For me this worked

the problem is that contacts don't show the duplicate numbers, it's just from whatsapp/other app that is giving this problem.
I have the same problem on my Galaxy s6... Any fix?
Yes i have this problem. Any Fix??
Hello I have the exact same problem. But a lot of people that have the S6 (95%) doesn't have this issue.
Maybe we have a contact problem in our Google account?
I'm thinking of deleting and retyping all of them bit it's annoying...
Should I give a try? I need WhatsApp so much but this double number issue is very frustrating at the same time....
Okey, so I had the exact same problem and I think I might have found a way to fix this. The problem is it's contact by contact and not bulk.
1. Go to your contacts in your S6. Search for a contact that you know have duplicate numbers in the dialer.
2. You will now see that there is just one number added to the contact.
3. Click the "show more" link in the bottom of the contact card (above your recent activity)
4. This expanded view now shows you more contact info. Look for the "Connected by" field with a link symbol on the right.
5. This field will show you what services link contact info to this contact. Click it and press the "-" by the connected app to split it from this contact.
6. Now if you search for this contact again you will find two contacts. The original one and the one you just broke free.
7. Click the unwanted one and press "more" in the top right and select "delete". It will warn you that you cant delete read only stuff but proceed anyway.
8. Voila! Now you don't have duplicate numbers in your dialer.
As I said this is a bit tedious, but it works. I have done it to my most frequent contacts and thats good enough for now. There is an option in the contact app where you can choose what sources to show in your contacts but that doesn't seem to work or doesn't apply to the dialer.
Hope this helps
.- Alex
Thanks for the help Bathyon I'll try this when I get back from work!!! I'll let you know.
This problem is not restricted to only the S6. I have the exact same problem on my Galaxy S4 mini Duos
I'm having the same problem with my Moto X (1st Gen). :/

Working ! ! ! ! Thank you very much ! You're a hero ! WhatsApp settings doesn't ask you if you want or not the app to mix up with your Google contacts. You found the solution to "separate" them without having twice the same contact anymore !
Thanks again !

Glad I could help. It was driving me mad so I'm as happy as you are
I don't think it's the proper solution. The apps need to fix the problem. I'm having the same problem on S5 too
Also having this problem. With the latest Whatsapp Beta. I will try seperating them.
For those who are still annoyed by this problem, I've found a more elegant solution - yet still somewhat of a hack. Unfortunately, root is required until marshmallow hits our devices:
1) Uninstall Whatsapp from your device
2) Install "App Ops" by nowsky from the Play Store
3) Reinstall Whatsapp (but do not yet open it)
4) Open up App Ops
5) Scroll down to Whatsapp in any of the categories (e.g. location)
6) Press on Whatsapp and untick its ability to "modify contacts"
7) Open and configure Whatsapp normally
Henceforth, Whatsapp won't be able to create duplicate numbers or entries. This solution does not seem to have any detrimental effect on Whatsapp itself. All Whatsapp capable contacts are properly displayed, there are no error messages and what have you.
