I'd like to make this particular thread about the current status of root, bootloader, and recovery. Feel free to post here or PM me so I can keep this thread as up to date as possible.
Keep in mind our devices will likely take longer to gain these mods due to Verizon locking us down more than other carriers usually. We likely won't have an unlocked bootloader ever.
This is for the Verizon Galaxy S5 ONLY! And now AT&T S5, please welcome our brothers!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Root: Geohot has rooted our phones and if you pledged a donation please think about finding a way to get it to him. It is the right thing to do, but also not mandatory.

Recovery: We have Safestrap at the time being
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2793891

DO NOT FOR ANY REASON USE THIS THREAD TO COMPARE THE GS5 TO THE M8 OR ANY OTHER PHONE
Thanks for starting this.
I know The T-Mo version has been rooted with CF-Auto-root by Chainfire. I think as of now that voids the warranty and trips the KNOX security so i do not think paypal fingerprint auth will work.
I am really just looking for root and hopefully on that doesnt throw Knox haywire.

Yes I think you're right. It trips Knox. I have no association with any of the developers, I just plan on updating the statuses of these areas and including links once there are finally informational threads.

Interesting. Who's going first?

You could claim to have done it and say it works fine, just to get some other poor soul to try it, and if they don't come back wanting to kill you, should be safe to try....unless they realize what you did, and tell you it's fine just to brick you S5 too. On that note, it worked fine.
Guys, something very weird just happened to my phone... I reinstalled all of my apps to my phone.. put my phone on charge and I noticed my phone rebooted and was stuck on the Verizon red boot logo.. What did you do? Try to see if Kingo works or something? Reboot to recovery, wipe the cache and reboot. Or factory reset if you have to. Is your Knox counter tripped?

I enabled ART through developer options and I did not get a padlock splashscreen. Just 35 minutes of 355 android apps updating. But it booted up just fine. What's the difference between dalvik and ART? Really never dove into that.
This method increases counter and trips Knox. Bummer.

Hi, I just wonder if we have pure stock LEAKED VRBLI5 so I can flash it to my pure stock G3 through Odin? My device is pure factory (no root, locked). Thanks.
I believe there is one actually posted in the General section.... I just read through it a few minutes ago... Here is what I think you are looking for... I tried to update sooner but had some HS about having to wait 5 minutes between posts.... This is NOT ROOTABLE and will LOCK bootloader... I know you are stock and this won't apply to you but want to say it for others.....

I'm interested too. I don't want to install a Custom ROM quite yet. I tried once and my device quit booting and got stuck on a message from Verizon telling me that the phone wasn't stock and I need to take it to a service store. I ended up just using Odin to flash back to stock.
I want to root this version from stock.

That message is because you didn't unlock the boot loader.
Ya thanks prdog, I saw in the threads of the JB roms they generally have the tethering opened up. Just what I needed

I think I relocked the bootloader and then got that Verizon message after the next reboot. Once you've unlocked and tweaked things, don't relock.
Hey Dog ...what do you mean by using a tether widget?
On stock roms you can use a toggle widget to activate the hot spot.

Actually I think attempting to flash a different kernel might have tripped his monotonic counter and with no way to fix it yet, when they receive and check his device for warranty they will see this and cancel the claim and most likely return the phone as is and make you return whatever device you swapped it for.
I saw a post from a very respected dev say the same thing about returning his phone and everyone was like "yeah you are the man, do it rah rah rah" and everyone is killing the guy here...hilarious really.

DO YOU WANT 4.3 WITHOUT LOCKING YOUR BOOTLOADER OR KNOX? DO I HAVE A LITTLE TREAT FOR YOU: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2591895
We now have a safestrap! Mind you its an ALPHA and should be used with caution there are currently NO Roms that support it but it does have TWRP. So backups are possible. Read up and download here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2605648
Now that the 4.3 update is out the old thread isn't very accurate.
So I'm making this so we can talk about it!
Rules:
-No spamming

DISCLAMER FOR TAKING THIS UPDATE: your bootloader will become perminantly locked after updating. So if you are fine with no more Roms or Kernels then update away. any rooting applications other then the one listed below will cause hard brick. any attempts to downgrade to MF! HARD BRICK

Which means VZW probably has some trickery in this to permalock the bootloader, so be careful.
Can anybody please check what languages does 4.3 have and if they're any different from 4.1.2? As we won't have root as of now, I'm afraid to lose support of one specific language enabled by Language Enabler. Thanks in advance!

ok so i updated ,via OTA ,to version 5.1.1
after this i decided to try to root it using a flashable file (odin) and now the touch screen doesnt work.
i dont know what else i could possible do, i tried factory reseting even though i knew it wouldnt work since i flashed a boot.img file
so my last guess would be to flash the stock firmware, i have the stock firmware for 5.0.2 but you cant downgrade so i really need the G925PVPU2B0F7 firmware

yeah, it recognizes my phone but i cant really do anything with it, according to smart switch, my phone is fully updated so i cant change anything and emergency recovery only works in a specific situation
the reason i needed the stock firmware for that version was because while attempting to get root i flashed (with odin) a boot.img and now the phones touch screen wont work
It took a month before the firmware was released. If you have Sprint insurance you can get a replacement for $0 dollars or $75 if you dont. You have to visit a repair store to start the paperwork. Jus claim, the phone touch screen didnt work after the update.

Download the stock kernel from this forum above.
I flashed it via Odin and now have my touchscreen back. Now it's not a total fix but I'm now writing you this on my edge with the touchscreen working. It's the only thing available right now for us. Two things that don't work are the back and recent apps buttons and when you lock your phone the screen won't come back on without restarting into download mode then hitting restart phone from there. So I've just been keeping phone plugged in for the most part because of this so screen won't go off.

Yup 5.1.1 rooted. Both work just each one has its problems. I'd rather have working data using the stock of7 kernel tho. The us cellular kernel has working buttons and screen comes back on after it goes off but no data so if you could talk to some people about this maybe we could get a working kernel with root where everything works, which would be awesome.

Yup 5.1.1 rooted. Both work just each one has its problems. I'd rather have working data using the stock of7 kernel tho. The us cellular kernel has working buttons and screen comes back on after it goes off but no data so if you could talk to some people about this maybe we could get a working kernel with root where everything works, which would be awesome.

this is th one with the working data?..i dont wanna mix them up..lol
I already have PK1 MM ROM on my sprint s5, but I can't flash lollipop ROMs and Odin keeps failing.
How should I do that? Thanks.
you cant. there is a physical "fuse" of sorts in the phone that once you are on PK1, you cant go back. All you can do is root, twrp and flash 6.0 ROMs

yeah, there are several of wifi hotspot apps out there that work on 6.0. Might want to poke around in the themes and apps section. Sometimes people get a little anxious about talking about hotspot apps because of the debate over it circumventing carriers money making abilities and that violates the TOS of XDA, but the last thing i saw the mods on here were ok with talking about it
I did, from PK1, and PL2 to OK4. So it is posible. Try redownloading/Odining OK4. Also there is a PK1 ROM with hotspot modded.

Also disable Reactivation Lock if enabled.

here is the list of sprint basebands just for reference in case youre interested
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G900P/SPR/
and youre in the 6.0.1 family and if you got it that way, youre likely not going to be able to downgrade (if thats what youre wanting to do), but you can root by flashing the PCA baseband then follow the 6.0.1 root instructions (im not sure, but i think theyre still just installing the appropriate TWRP, boot to twrp and flash supersu while in twrp)
